This book simply does not explain;and not for student. If you really want to buy, try
Modern Advanced Accounting By E. John Larsen.

1 out of 5 stars Save trees and retire this dog.......2003-11-25

This book was required for my college class. It is clearly designed for the student who enjoys reading textbooks over and over again, just to find the smallest bit of information; versus those who need information fast and reliable.

Not designed for modern day accelerated learning. There are barely any examples and no callouts.

The authors must be simply trying to get their 35 pages per chapter quota. It would be interesting to see what this book would be like if they were compensated based upon student comprehension instead.

4 out of 5 stars With Excel, Hoyle's Book Excels.......2002-06-12

I had to use this book for my Advanced Accounting class at the U of I at Chicago, and I followed it along with Bill Gates' Excel. Even without an available student's solutions manual, I recommend this book.

The learning approach I employed was different. I used the exhibits, figures, and other tables, and duplicated them in Excel. Within the cells, I created formulas to derive the numbers shown in each debit (credit) line item in the worksheet. When it came time to try a different problem, I just changed the inputs, and in most cases, the numbers fell into place. If something didn't, it usually meant that I had to modify or add to a formula or input until the entire worksheet balanced.

After each chapter, the instructor provided the solutions so that we were able to check our answers, but in most cases, I really didn't need them because the answers would just reinforce the solutions that I derived.

With this book and Excel, learning advanced accounting (consolidations) was fun and intellectualy stimulating, and I learned a lot. Moreover, I refined my Excel skills. I just hope I don't become too overconfident and not sufficiently study for the consolidations portion of the CPA exam! :-)

4 out of 5 stars A good book for researchers........1998-05-04

This is a good book, but potential buyers should realize that it is aimed at researchers, not traders. It would take considerable work to rediscover the successful neural net discussed in the book, and there is no guarantee that the net would do well in real trading because the author does not seem to have taken slippage and commissions into account.

5 out of 5 stars Good exposition of AI and a financial application.......1997-10-04

This book contains a number of new and interesting insights into the application of neural networks and genetic algorithms for finance. The idea of using "network regression pruning" looks extremely powerful and it would be very interesting to see this compared with other network pruning techniques. An aspect also worth highlighting is the detailed treatment of the financial experiments which appear to have been conducted in a rigorous and careful manner. I have attended many seminars and talks in which the experimentation for financial applications has been extremely poor. In many instances there is a failure to establish objective test criteria. In this work a single test run on ten years' worth of data is conducted and the algorithm performs well, contradicting all forms of the efficient market hypothesis. The level of detail also allows the reader to reconstruct the algorithm and methods for their own use. Other books on this subject should be as clear and as open.

            Book Description

This new edition of the critically acclaimed Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety was designed to help safety officers, laboratory managers, principal investigators, and laboratory workers bring lab health and safety into the twenty-first century. It does this by presenting a timely, complete, and easy-to-implement approach to ensuring a workplace that is safe for its workers as well as the surrounding community. Further, the handbook lays out guidelines to help laboratories comply with the requirements set by OSHA, the EPA, FDA, DOT, DEA, and other relevant regulatory agencies.

While the overall philosophy that made the first edition so successful has remained the same, the book has been extensively revised and updated to reflect all new regulations and technical advances that have occurred in the field over the past five years. In addition, this Second Edition now features a multitude of sample forms, checklists, protocols, and other valuable documents that will become an indispensable part of any laboratory health and safety management program.

A valuable reference tool for those seeking detailed information and guidance on specific safety and health issues, Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety, Second Edition is also much more. By providing a set of clear, easy-to-follow guidelines that serve as a rational framework for creating site-specific health and safety requirements, it, in effect, arms laboratory managers with a solid foundation upon which to build—or reengineer—a comprehensive program for identifying, managing, and controlling health and safety hazards in the laboratory. All of the authors' recommended guidelines are clearly presented in the section entitled "Suggested Laboratory Health and Safety Guidelines." Each chapter of the handbook refers to the relevant sections of the Suggested Guidelines, explains the basis for the recommendations, and provides guidance on how to comply. Offering a feasible, easily implemented approach to designing and maintaining a safe workplace, Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety is an indispensable tool for all those responsible for safeguarding the health and safety of lab workers and the residents of the ambient community.

"R. Scott Stricoff...and Douglas B. Walters...have assembled information from a variety of sources that is not easily available elsewhere....This is a useful book." — Chemical & Engineering News

"...provides a useful contribution and will be a welcome addition to the laboratory safety adviser's library....the authors' breadth of knowledge and expertise gives a genuine sense of authority to the information given." — Chemistry and Industry

"...useful for laboratory managers and safety officers who are in charge of the safety of workplaces, but it is also useful for laboratory architects and designers, supervisors, and others in charge of planning safe laboratories. Employees will also find information on the handling of toxic samples and chemicals....Although the book follows American standards and regulations, its interest may be considered worldwide. The book is especially useful in practical safety work because it explains thoroughly how to build a safe and pleasant laboratory and how to maintain its safety." — Scandinavian Journal of Work Environment and Health

                  Book Description

In this expanded edition of Quanta, Logic and Spacetime, the logical base is greatly broadened and quantum-computational aspects of the approach are brought to the fore. The first two parts of this edition may indeed be regarded as providing a self-contained and logic-based foundation for — and an introduction to — the enterprise known as quantum computing.

The rest of the work takes on the task (as in the first edition) of computing from first principles certain dynamical expressions which turn out to compare favorably with the Lagrangian densities of the (massless) Standard Model, including gravity. The logic of this process is now subject to greater formal rigor than was possible in the first edition, and the central thesis — that quantum physics at a fundamental level may itself be realized as a species of quantum computation — is strongly underscored.

In the past five years Mark O'Donnell has garnered a fine reputation for comic invention. His humorous fiction and drawings have appeared in The New Yorker and his collections, Vertigo Park and Elementary Education, are now considered classics. In his new novel, Getting Over Homer, O'Donnell's comic genius is at full tilt. Getting Over Homer tells the story of Blue Monahan, a gay man and songwriter in search of love and security in a world more interested in lust and scarcity. +O'Donnell makes us laugh. His ability to crack wise and bring tears to our eyes while doing so is evident on every page. Getting Over Homer is wildly funny but manages to move us as well; it is a great comic novel.

                  Book Description

"Wise and forgiving . . . tough-minded and tender-hearted" (The New York Times), this delicious "coming of middle age" novel takes a lyrical, winsome, and genuinely side-splitting look at the heartbreak, aging, the search for home, and the madness of love between two mismatched men. "A stylish mix of humorous irony and realistic detail."--San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book by Overlooked Writer.......2000-05-02

After I first read this book, I couldn't believe Mark O'Donnell wasn't a more famous writer. He is truly gifted. The characters are hilariously real and the writing is just amazing--the similes and metaphors are to die for. This book was a laugh riot from beginning to end. It's theme is universal--LOVE hurts but you survive it, even though you're dead sure you won't.

                  3 out of 5 stars inspiring first 100 pages.......2000-02-21

I was captivated by this book for the first 100 pages -- until it began to fizzle. O'Donnell certainly has a scintillating sense of humor and writes trenchantly about gay life in New York. The book's one set piece on Fire Island is hilarious, and I found myself reading bits of it to friends. Alas, the narrative seems to wane and lag after Homer exits, and what follows feels all too familiar and predictable. Don't get me wrong. There are original insights all the way through, particularly about being a twin. Indeed, that subject matter in and of itself might make for fascinating next-novel material. The other comment I want to make is that although much of the dialogue is delicious and bitchy and pointed, you have to suspend disbelief a bit because you know that people can't really be that witty en passant. Obviously in writing one has to tred the dangerous ground between banal and clever, but when characters are two clever they run the risk of sounding too much like the author.

3 out of 5 stars C'mon Mark...let's get to know some of these characters..........1999-09-14

Getting Over Homer is a sparsely written novel about Blue Monohan, yet ANOTHER character from Cleveland (I've been to Cleveland and it isn't nearly this interesting in real life, Mark). Blue has one foot in the Buckeye state and one in the big city life of New York. Unlike another Cleveland-born character, Mary Ann Singleton, of Tales of the City fame, Blue's life remains somewhat centered in his Catholic white bread family life in Cleveland and embraces his move to the city only half-heartedly. This is unfortunate. Ninety-percent of the interesting characters in the book are Blue's family members! Oh, Mark...how I wish you'd let us get to know some of them better. This book could have been twice as long and still have held my interest. Even the main characters are underdeveloped. I found over and over again that I wanted to know some of the characters more. Mark writes hauntingly, however, and on more than one occassion provides beautiful insight into the "normal" everyday life of a gay man. That is why I chose to read this book, as I am also a middle aged man grappling with the fact that love sometimes leaves inexplicably. Finishing the book has made me want to read more of O'Donnell's offerings. I would recommend this book as light hearted reading, perfect for the train or bus as the chapters are small. Maybe we should all date someone like Mark O'Donnell...

5 out of 5 stars Slight but tremendously funny.......1998-05-28

Just what we need: yet another novel in which a youngish gay man searches wryly for true love in the Northeast. The streets that first-time novelist Mark O'Donnell treads are pretty well-worn, walked by Armistead Maupin, Stephen McCauley and a number of others. But O'Donnell brings remarkable freshness to his chronicle. He delivers a breathlessly funny novel that rewards the more careful reader, piling quip upon quip, precariously stacking clever puns and turns of phrase until they seem about to topple.

"I might as well tell you the whole arguably beautiful ordeal," his narrator sighs. "It's one of those coming-of-middle-age stories. A *bull-dung*-whatever. 'Lost Labors Loved.'" The narrator, Hans Christian Monahan (nicknamed Blue), was a child prodigy of sorts, writing a popular song (the sappy "Love Is the Answer") at age 11; since then he's slowly declined to become, in his 30s, a pianist and songwriter of less than great reknown, "a drowning, unaccompanied, pasty guy."

Still believing that love is indeed the answer ("I'm a beauty fool. A hope dope."), Blue searches New York for the perfect guy. What he finds is Homer, a dazzling party consultant of uncertain past and future, a man who turns out to be "ultimately more mirage than marriage." Blue describes his love life: "A few painful misfires, a few wonderful misfires, and then Homer. Homer, who cried with happiness when I carried him up to the roof of his own building he'd never even been on. Homer, who then left me alone with the ocean." He unsuccessfully seeks comfort from his 11 eccentric siblings, from friends, from television, from the Unhappy Hunting Grounds of gay bars. Listless and dispirited, "I was living in the world's dullest nightmare," he says.

And then he puts his plight into perspective: "One day I was watching this science-fiction movie on TV, waiting for the seasons to change, and the space victim was being lowered into boiling lava, and I said to myself, `Well, I'm heartbroken, but I'm not being lowered into boiling lav! a.' That's when I knew I was going to make it." Things begin looking up-"Love Is the Answer" is resurrected as a detergent jingle, and Blue turns his despondency into a new song ("Thank You from the Bottom of My Hurt") that's recorded and made a hit by a country singer. "I'd sued life for heartbreak and it settled out of court," Blue says.

Finally over Homer, Blue finds Teddy, an uncomplicated twentysomething who seems devoted to him, and things seem on the right track. But "any man in Eden is trespassing," Blue says, and sure enough, Teddy too proves fickle and unpredictable, rejecting him cruelly and capriciously. "I can see," Blue laments, "why gay partnerships are so unstable-with no children or family support to bind them in others' eyes, they're like trying to produce a long-running TV series without sponsors or an audience."

The scenes of conflict and breakup should be far more moving than they are-sometimes O'Donnell's one-liners turn frantic, short-circuiting the story's pathos. When Teddy calmly tells a desperate Blue, "At this moment, I hate you," he blurts out, "You can't mean that! It's puppy hate! You'll outgrow it!" This is very funny, and clever, but it shortchanges the reader's need for catharsis. This complaint is a small one, though. Against odds, the language and one-liners keep up their furious pace all the way to the end, maintaining its bittersweet tone while delivering a steady stream of laughs born of desperation and frustration. At 193 pages, "Getting Over Homer" seems, if anything, too short. Blue sums up his story: "Boy finds love, Boy loses love, Boy finds seemingly far truer love, Boy loses that, too. At this point, Boy isn't a boy anymore.... You want life to be a fable, or a legend, but it's an epic shaggy dog story. And I'm just one more grizzling spear carrier in that overproduced and unfocused Grand Opera Earth.

Completely uninteresting story of "Blue"'s heartbreak over Homer, someone the reader barely gets to know and has no reason to like. Eventually Blue forgets about Homer when he meets Teddy, another uninteresting and undeveloped character. You can tell that it's true love because they say, "I love you." Occasionally funny but never witty.

The U.S. Marine Corps knows how to prepare its men for the physical rigors of combat. Here is the entire classic USMC combat conditioning course as taught at the Officer Candidate School. 3 out of 5 stars a nice piece of history.......2005-12-04

A good resource for those interested in marine corp. history, or who are planning on training a company, but for the individual athlete, there are much better resources.

                    4 out of 5 stars Old-School Self-Defense.......2005-06-16

This book covers the hand-to-hand combat curriculum as taught to the USMC during WWII. As such, it covers material which probably won't be of use to most people nowadays like bayonet fighting. The empty-hand portion is pure Fairbairn & Sykes although it isn't as stripped down as the curriculum in Get Tough and the SOE curriculum. Much of the material probably came from Marines who served as part of the international police force in China prior to WWII which may explain some of the come-along type holds which would later be eliminated during the course of the war. As such, the book probably gives a pretty good look at what the Shanghai Municipal Police were taught.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Classic Fighting Manual!.......2003-10-15

As opposed to the other reviewers, I believe that this is a manual worth having, if you have an interest in "real" self-defense. This manual is a classic, and it provides the reader with some insight into the tactics actually used during WWII to neutralize enemy soldiers during close combat. You won't find any fancy katas, or other martial arts routines but you will get solid tactics that worked in the past and are still relevant in the present.

The title includes the complete hardcore calisthentic exercise routine, commonly refered to as "combat conditioning" as well as the basics of "combat judo", stick / baton tactics, knife tactics, and bayonet tactics. Hardcore students of CQC won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Standard Military CQC.......2002-08-01

This book is standard military CQC based largely on judo. It is a "basic training" type program. Good, if somewhat over simplified system of upperbody throws with some open hand blows included.

This history of the experience of black women opens with an account of the life of Lucy Terry, who was brought as a slave to Deerfield, Massachusetts, when she was a child in about 1735. At 16, Terry wrote a poem, "Bars Fight," the first work of literature by a black American. Years later, married and free, Terry argued for the admission of her son to Williams College and, when a white man tried to take her family's land, she took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. Terry's story is typical of those in A Shining Thread of Hope, which brings together centuries of achievement by black women. As coauthors Darlene Clark Hine and Kathleen Thompson put it, "The extraordinary achievements of black women in the 19th and 20th centuries did not grow out of degradation but out of a legacy of courage, resourcefulness, initiative, and dignity that goes back to 1619."

                    Book Description

At the greatest moments and in the cruelest times, black women have been a crucial part of America's history.  Now, the inspiring history of black women in America is explored in vivid detail by two leaders in the fields of African American and women's history.

A Shining Thread of Hope chronicles the lives of black women from indentured servitude in the early American colonies to the cruelty of antebellum plantations, from the reign of lynch law in the Jim Crow South to the triumphs of the Civil Rights era, and it illustrates how the story of black women in America is as much a tale of courage and hope as it is a history of struggle.  On both an individual and a collective level, A Shining Thread of Hope reveals the strength and spirit of black women and brings their stories from the fringes of American history to a central position in our understanding of the forces and events that have shaped this country.

5 out of 5 stars This riveting narrative gives voice to American black women........1998-07-12

This riveting narrative, a kind of polyphonic chorus giving voice to American black women, adds an important chapter in the ongoing project of understanding our nation's history. Covering a span of almost 400 years, the work moves beyond stereotypes, beyond idealization, to recognize the richness of the stories they tell. With superbly crafted prose, the authors document difficulties and challenges along with achievements and triumphs as they interpret the profound complexities of gender, race and class in the lives of African American women.

3 out of 5 stars An important work--doesn't fulfill the promise of its title........1998-06-09

It is close to impossible to reconstruct a history of African Americans. Indeed, part of our common American heritage is the destruction and unrecorded depiction of non-European and non-male histories. The authors have dilligently researched their stories and they are to be congratulated for their tenacity. However, the book fails to elicit "hope" from the reader. The writing is dry and unimaginative. With such a lively history, it is a shame that it reads like a dead history. The most egregious flaw in the book, however, is not found in its writing style but rather in how the authors attempt to boost the qualities of the women portrayed in the book by drawing comparisons between the accomplishment of these women and the accomplishments of men and white women. This is a completely unnecessary element. The accomplishments of these African American women stand on their own. The purpose of the book is largely diminished because the authors have touted "whiteness" or "maleness" as standards. "Whiteness" and "maleness" are not standards by my measure and should not be used as one, particularly in a book about black women. I would hope that the authors eliminate their references and comparisons to men and white women in future editions so that the history of these women can be properly relayed to future generations.

A Shining Thread of Hope: The History of Black Women in America is a book for the country. This book is not just a history written on a specific race and gender, but it offers invaluable insights on the lives of a group of people who simply did not give up hope. A Shining Thread of Hope is a book seems to be in a class by itself. It's both academic and non-academic. It proves to be a wonderfully written narrative that any age, class, gender or race can learn from and enjoy. I applaud the authors for their collaborating efforts to bring to life the stories of Black women, who seem to be forgotten. I would encourage all people to read this book, for it will provide them with food for the mind and soul. A Shining Thread of Hope leaves one's heart full of warmth and love for all humanity. It encourages us to fight for what is right and demand respect of each other as human beings. (Marshanda Smith)

5 out of 5 stars This is an extremely important book........1998-03-13

I have read a number of books about Black Women and this one is in a different league from the others. It if, as far as I know, the FIRST book to tell the narrative history of African American women in the United States and it tells it in a riviting fashing "warts and all." I had planned on spending several days working my way through a "history" book and stayed up till 4:00 in the morning to finish it in a single sitting. I can without qualification say that I think anyone who cares about American history should read this volume.

                        Book Description

As the twenty-first century dawns, public land policy is entering a new era. This timely book examines the historical, scientific, political, legal, and institutional developments that are changing management priorities and policies-developments that compel us to view the public lands as an integrated ecological entity and a key biodiversity stronghold. Once the background is set, each chapter opens with a specific natural resource controversy, ranging from the Pacific Northwest's spotted owl imbroglio to the struggle over southern Utah's Colorado Plateau country. Robert Keiter uses these case histories to analyze the ideas, forces, and institutions that are both fomenting and retarding change. Although Congress has the final say in how the public domain is managed, the public land agencies, federal courts, and western communities are each playing important roles in the transformation to an ecological management regime. At the same time, a newly emergent and homegrown collaborative process movement has given the public land constituencies a greater role in administering these lands. Arguing that we must integrate the new imperatives of ecosystem science with our devolutionary political tendencies, Keiter outlines a coherent new approach to natural resources policy.
