Book Description
Applied Derivatives provides a detailed, yet relatively non-technical, treatment of the conceptual foundations for derivative securities markets pricing and investment principles. This book draws from the most fundamental concepts of pricing for options, futures, and swaps to provide insight into the potential risks and returns from conventional option investing. This book combines traditional topics in pricing theory with nontraditional topics that the author has researched throughout his career. Topics include, but are not limited to:a CAPM-based derivation of the binomial model which shows no strategies involving fairly-priced options can simultaneously reduce risk and increase returnthe effects of volatility misestimation in synthetic option replicationthe use of linear programming in options arbitrage and replicationthe formation of optimal portfolios consisting of stock, options, and safe assetspricing options when the source of risk is a potential change in interest rates, unit and tailed-based futures hedginginterest rate immunization using swaps.Applied Derivatives is supported by the website http://www.rendleman.com/book which contains course software referenced in the text and additional questions and problems as they become available.

An MBA's guide to Options.......2005-11-23
This is a very well written book from an MBA's perspective. In other words, the emphasis is more on intuition rather than the underlying mathematics of option pricing. The book in fact starts with the Binomial Tree approach to option pricing - a method that is much more intuitive and powerful compared to Black-Scholes. The author walks you through certain arbitrage relationships before developing the binomial tree approach. Black-Scholes is introduced once you have obtained a thorough understanding of the binomial tree approach. There is a decent treatment of Forwards, Futures and Swaps and a very elegant proof for how CAPM weaves into option pricing. I strongly recommend the book to anyone starting out in option pricing. Once you have developed sufficient competence with trees and formulae, you can move to Hull's book which is much more technical but provides robust treatment of exotic options.

Principles of Supply Chain Management: A Balanced Approach
ASIN: 1881052931 |
Book Description
Supply Chain Optimization illustrates how companies that create, distribute, and sell products or services can join forces to establish a supply network with an unbeatable competitive advantage. Poirier and Reiter explain how companies can successfully employ partnering, rather than working on improvements in isolation, to identify high opportunity initiatives across a total supply network. By applying key resources on focused opportunities and sharing the resulting savings, members of the network get larger results, faster, as well as funding for future efforts.
Supply Chain Optimization offers survival tools for companies of all sizes. The authors describe consortiums, or "share groups," of smaller companies that can compete with the volume leverage of large corporations, superstores, and warehouse stores. By analyzing their shared supply chain and pooling their available resources, these consortiums can find hidden savings to protect their profit margins and remain competitive in today's marketplace.
The book includes case studies that show what a wide range of companies are actually doing to achieve supply chain optimization. Companies profiled include: Financing Division of General Electric, Dial Corporation, Proctor & Gamble, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Navistar/Goodyear, Packaging Corporation of America, Dominick's, Hart Mountain Corporation, and General Motors--Saturn.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best!.......2001-10-17
This book is a "must-read" for anyone in the business of supply chain management! The partnering and networking chapters are well worth the price. Highly recommended!
Insightful!.......2001-03-27
Authors Charles C. Poirier and Stephen E. Reiter envision a trip down your supply chain like an effortless sail on calm seas. Your organization can reach this placid efficiency, they explain, by forming partnerships with suppliers and others in your business network. But the authors don't ask you to take their word; instead they present detailed case studies of companies that have implemented supply-chain optimization strategies and reaped prodigious benefits. The book's only flaw is its style. It is densely written and often weighed down by prose as murky as a rural delivery system and twice as difficult to penetrate. But we [...] recommend that business owners, corporate managers, executives and logisticians of all levels take the time required to patiently excavate the practical and pragmatic information that lies within.
Though repetitive, solid introduction to SC management.......1999-08-24
An informative guide to supply chain management, particularly for newcomers like myself. Introduction to the conceptual framework, relationship management issues and jargon are the key takeaways. A reader will be fully conversant on supply chain management matters after finishing the book.
As for shortcomings, this book could have been written in a third less print, the job of a disciplined editor. While I understand business books need some heft, brevity is under-rated in this category. Repetition is rampant in this book. After the much needed tightening, a chapter on supply chain management for new or smaller businesses would be a welcome addition.
That being said, I happily lend this book to friends and colleagues, the most practical compliment to a book's authors.
author chose wrong title... waste both time and money........1999-06-06
The authors chose the wrong title, I guess. I agree with first review that this book is not worth time nor money. How could we optimize problem with "verbal"? We all need "solutions" -not "suggestion", even though suggestion is transformed from solution. Still, quantitative analysis comes before explaination for optimization. Look for another book unless you want to spend somes bucks to get the book.
This book can be summarized in one page.......1998-12-11
The main point of this book is: all constituents in the supply chain must work together to achieve mutual benefits. This is repeated 2000 times with different words. Quite an accomplishment in verbosity, but certainly not worth the money. The authors introduce an outdated three-step model and introduce a fourth level, the supplier of the supplier, and call it a new "model", an insult to the reader's intelligence.

Book Description
Large quantities of by-products are produced worldwide, severely polluting the living environment, but simultaneously representing a potential resource of protein and carbohydrate feedstuffs for farm animals. The passage of these materials into water, soil and air may be partially diverted by appropriate technologies into a natural cycle of organic resources, leading to the production of substances for plant as well as animal nutrition. Thus the animals become effective convertors of secondary products of the ``man-changed'' ecosystem into animal protein for human nutrition.
This book demonstrates the great possibilities of obtaining nonconventional feedstuffs from by-products, thereby solving the problem of how to use these resources most effectively.

This book offers complete coverage of classic (one-dimensional) NMR as well as up-to-date coverage of two-dimensional NMR and other modern methods. This book focuses on all aspects of NMR including classic methods, modern techniques, practical advice for execution of the NMR experiment, theory, and more. For practicing NMR spectroscopists who want a better understanding of their subject, professors who want a wider knowledge of NMR, preparative (synthetic) organic chemists in industry who want to have more information about how to prove the structures of the compounds they make, and analytical chemists in industry who actually carry out the experiments and want a better understanding of what they are doing.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.

Book Description
Volume Five of the Encyclopedia is devoted to the social, political, economic, and spiritual - and thereby human dimensions of global environmental change.
It highlights the profound shifts in human thinking and awareness that are required to "wrap our minds" around the advent of globalization, and our increasing ability to affect natural systems, sometimes to our own benefit.
Because of the complex weave of interaction between humanity and the environment, this volume contains many essays and articles that are more in the realm of probes than fixed descriptions of their topics. Powerful words and powerful ideas, metaphors, myths, beliefs, images and arte-facts - these are all "vehicles" for the creation and shaping of meaning among human beings.
Topics covered include the great political and economic theories, the most influential views of nature from Plato to Rachel Carson, and the historic and literary seedbeds for the rise of environmental thought and practice in our time. Of particular importance are the introductory essays from leading figures in the field, and special efforts have been made throughout to give space to alternative voices and ideas.
Dialogue and diversity are essential to human development, and a reader will be stimulated by this volume towards his or her own thoughtful response to the increasing responsibility for the future of the Earth that has come upon us in our time.

Book Description
The United States government is reorganizing to increase domestic security. How will these changes impact the American criminal justice system? DEFENDING THE HOMELAND: DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND SECURITY is the only book that illustrates up-to-the minute information on how our criminal justice system has changed since 9/11. Written by an expert on academic leave to provide training for the Department of Defense, White provides an insider's look at issues related to restructuring of federal law enforcement and recent policy challenges. The book discusses the problem of bureaucracy, interaction between the law enforcement and intelligence communities, civil liberties, and theories of war and police work. From a practical perspective, the book examines offensive and defensive strategies. The book gives an introduction to violent international religious terrorism and an overview of domestic terrorist problems still facing law enforcement.
Customer Reviews:
The 'MUST Read' for law enforcement intelligence students.......2004-10-15
Jonathan R. White's Defending the Homeland: Domestic Intelligence, Law Enforcement, and Security is the book I assign as the keystone text for a Law Enforcement Intelligence course. It is a `must read' because it correctly portrays intelligence as both art and science, deeply rooted in action-making tangible things happen, getting real things done-by reducing warfare to its simplest level and thereby limiting the negative effects of susceptibilities such as fog, chance, and friction. This volume makes sense of how the traditionally polar fields of law enforcement and intelligence can develop a symbiotic relationship for synergistic effect.
Because it is one of the first sources for this argument, it serves as a measuring stick for both policy and operational analysis. It examines the concepts, uses, and limits of strategic intelligence in contrast to operational imperatives. Very little has been previously offered in law enforcement intelligence beyond rhetoric-which are sound as far as they go-such as, `intelligence is the key to the problem', or `the support of the population must be won'. Students and practitioners tasked with, or having previously experienced the responsibility of actually executing missions will appreciate this book the most.
The essence of the book can clearly be defined as delineating the parameters of low intensity conflict and law enforcement; to deduce from them the principles of asymmetric warfare, and to outline the corresponding strategy and tactics.

Book Description
This new edition is intended for third and fourth year undergraduates in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, and the Applied Sciences, and can serve as a springboard for further work in Continuum Mechanics or General Relativity. Starting from a basic knowledge of calculus and matrix algebra, together with fundamental ideas from mechanics and geometry, the text gradually develops the tools for formulating and manipulating the field equations of Continuum Mechanics. The mathematics of tensor analysis is introduced in well-separated stages: the concept of a tensor as an operator; the representation of a tensor in terms of its Cartesian components; the components of a tensor relative to a general basis, tensor notation, and finally, tensor calculus. The physical interpretation and application of vectors and tensors are stressed throughout. Though concise, the text is written in an informal, non-intimidating style enhanced by worked-out problems and a meaningful variety of exercises. The new edition includes more exercises, especially at the end of chapter IV. Furthermore, the author has appended a section on Differential Geometry, the essential mathematical tool in the study of the 2-dimensional structural shells and 4-dimensional general relativity.

for General Relativity .......2006-10-23
In a very concise book, updated to the 2nd edition, Simmonds explains tensor analysis. Powerful ideas get an airing. With examples simple enough to convey easily the meanings to most readers. He introduces you to the Einstein summation convention, and the use of contravariant and covariant vectors, along with the covariant derivative.
This edition seems geared towards applications in General Relativity. Though the chapter on Newton's Law shows how tensors can be used in material science deriving from classical physics, like with the use of the stress tensor.
The exercises in each chapter are fairly numerous. Most should not be too hard to the reader. Note that no answers are supplied in the text.
A great introductory book on tensors........1999-11-28
In this book J.G.Simmonds gives an interesting overview of tensor analysis. Knowledge of some real & vector analysis and linear algebra is neaded. The book is very well organised and has alot of "helpful" exercises at the end of each chapter. This book is great for anyone who was to now the basics on tensors for use in general relativity or continuum mechanics, and is a great introduction book for someone who wants to study Differential geometry. The index of the book: 1.Introduction:Vectors and Tensors 2.General Bases and Tensor Notation 3.Newton's Law and Tensor Calculus 4.The Gradient, The Del Operator, Covarriant Differentiation and the Divergence theorem
A Little Too Brief.......1999-03-21
This book is definately something you should probably take a look at if you are intending to learn tensors, HOWEVER, perhaps a book such as Schaum's would be more fruitful. I was quite excited until I saw just how brief the book was. Basic concepts are dealt with very nicely, but the depth is lacking and pages 49 - 67 threw me a curve. In that particular section, clarity would have beaten brevity.
Great introductory text.......1998-12-24
This book provided valuble insight into the world of tensors. I am a highschool student, and after having done many futile studies into the world of tensor geometry, this book easily taught me the things that I had confused during earlier tensor readings. I highly recommend this book for any self-study.
This book enabled me to make a break-through in my understan.......1997-12-27
A brief on Tensor Analysis was a break-through in my understanding of tensors. In particular, the other attempts at self-education always ran afoul of the confusing meaning of the upper and lower indices. This book cleared that confusion and allowed an easier reading of other texts. for me, it was an essiential beginning of the understanding and is highly recommended.
