THE LOST EPISODES, VOLUME 1 (4 cassettes) is a must-have for any Bob and Ray enthusiast. Here you can enjoy dozens of choice cuts from the great comedic duo's live radio work on station WOR in (I believe) the 1970's, many of which show them at top form. The highlight is the episodes of their mock soap opera "Mary Backstayge, Noble Wife". Join "America's favorite family of the footlights" as they tour New England towns with their Broadway show, WESTCHESTER FURIOSO, the centerpiece of which is "In Your Hat" - an appallingly bad production number worthy of "Springtime for Hitler". There are also such delightful nuggets as The Trophy Train, Charles the Poet, "The Gathering Dusk", "Elmer W. Litzinger, Spy", and more. Bob and Ray spoofed the snail's-pace of soap operas to perfection. Their wizardry with voices, sound effects, and music is enthralling. Bob and Ray take aim at commercials - and much more........1999-08-05

This collection is an odd mix of Bob and Ray's live radio routines, from early in their career on Boston's WHDH, to New York on CBS and NBC. It's interesting, and funny, to hear them take aim at the local merchants paying for airtime on WHDH. Some "Mary Backstayge" routines are included as well, and just a few routines were previously released. It's interesting to hear how their style evolved from rambunctious to rehearsed - but almost always hilarious if not just plain funny. While this isn't the best collection to serve as an introduction to their large body of work, it's a "must have" nevertheless. Even though the sound quality ranges from fair to good, and just plain awful in one old commercial, it doesn't seem to matter when Bob and Ray are on the air.

Crimes of War by Gutman and Rieff is simply in a league of its own. It is the first field guide of its kind and deserves the attention it is finally receiving (thanks to the photo of Angelina Jolie reading it.) It is logically organized alphabetically by war crime and each one has an article and photographs to accompany it.

I recommend this for anyone, from a high school student to a professional journalist in the field, who wants to be educated and informed on world affairs and who cares about human rights.

Unique.......2006-06-14

"Crimes of War" is a unique document. It provides a brief but illuminating look into what is broadly termed "international humanitarian law" or the laws of war. Expert journalists, historians, academics, military officials, and international activists provide vivid descriptions of various violations of international law as well as other issues and case studies; for example, "forced labor," "incitement to genocide," "aggression," "Chechnya," "civil war," etc. It is organized like an encyclopedia of human tragedy, basically. The photographs that accompany the entries are powerfully evocative of the suffering they represent, as well.

The subtitle, "What the Public Should Know," is right on target. I think it is vital that all Americans be aware of the laws of war and their violations, both historical and contemporary. Reading a smart collection like this one also gives the reader considerable insight into the nature of international conflict seen as a whole.

By the way, on February 1, 2004, Cash, after researching H. Wayne Elliott's previous assertion on this issue, concluded as follows:

"Note that Brooks does not
claim he believe women want to be raped but is instead suggesting that
perhaps HWayne might believe it as an explanation of why HWayne
earlier appeared to deny women slaves had been raped by their masters.
HWayne's claim about Brooks appears to be false."

Now, the best H. Wayne Elliott could come up with in reply was the following:

"Actually, what the fool suggested was that I advocated rape because I posted
an excerpt from a post-war treatise on slavery which included a discussion
of the law of rape and the claim that there were no known cases of whites
raping slaves. Now, the fool decided that merely posting that excerpt would
permit him to distort that into a charge that I must believe that women
wanted to be raped. As there is no way any rational person (Yes, I know,
Professor Simpson would only rarely be considered to be rational.) could
have reached that conclusion from the mere fact that I provided a quote from
a long out of print book, is it not reasonable to conclude that when the
fool made that bizarre statement he was actually revealing his own strange
ideas of rape?"

Ignore the twisted assertion at the beginning: apparently H. Wayne Elliott wants you to believe that he's been accused of advocating rape for reasons best known to himself. Instead, note the admission at the end that I said no such thing, but that it's a product of H. Wayne Elliott's twisted and perverted imagination.

An Extraordinary Guide.......2000-10-04

This A-to-Z guidebook is absolutely amazing. Without falling into the trap of legalese (which is beyond most lay people), this book manages to teach us numerous things about the conduct of war and how difficult it is to apply the numerous chapters and laws in modern conflicts, be they international or internal.

The photographs that accompany most articles are striking; some of them are rather gruesome, but this is war, and the more suffering we see, the more likely we are to commit ourselves to not seeing this kind of inhumanity ever again. To do so, we have to put action behind political rhetoric, to give substance to our words (Vaclav Havel's motto).

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested about the law, war, man's inhumanity to man, and the legal architecture which, over decades, has been taking form to protect us from ourselves.

Crimes of War.......2000-07-25

This is an exceptional book for anyone to own whether it be student, Professors or anyone interested in learning about international affairs and events that help shape our nation and foreign policy. Reiff and Guttman include excellent pictures and summaries of events that have shaped our past, present and future. This should be a must read book for those interested in international law and those people interested in the formation of the Rome Treaty for an International Criminal Court. There is also a web site that complements the book. Reiff and Guttman have done an excellant job of informing the public on aspects of the "Crimes of War."

A Tribal Order describes the politico-legal system of Jabal Razih, a remote massif in northern Yemen inhabited by farmers and traders. Contrary to the popular image of Middle Eastern tribes as warlike, lawless, and invariably opposed to states, the tribes of Razih have stable structures of governance and elaborate laws and procedures for maintaining order and resolving conflicts with a minimum of physical violence. Razihi leaders also historically cooperated with states, provided the latter respected their customs, ideals, and interests. Weir considers this system in the context of the rugged environment and productive agricultural economy of Razih, and of centuries of continuous rule by Zaydi Muslim regimes and (latterly) the republican governments of Yemen.

The book is based on Weir's extended anthropological fieldwork on Jabal Razih, and on her detailed study of hundreds of handwritten contracts and treaties among and between the tribes and rulers of Razih. These documents provide a fascinating insight into tribal politics and law, as well as state-tribe relations, from the early seventeenth to the late twentieth century. A Tribal Order is also enriched by case histories that vividly illuminate tribal practices. Overall, this unusually wide-ranging work provides an accessible account of a remarkable Arabian society through time.
