    Book Description

Based on the infrastructure provided by internet technologies, fundamental changes are occurring in the way firms design, assemble, deliver and support products and services. These changes have the potential to produce dramatic cost savings within firms and across their supply chains. At the same time, internet technologies have laid the foundation for the Network Economy model. Written by a practitioner in the field and a business strategy academic, this book bridges the gap between high-level strategy books and technology implementation guides. The book provides business and IT managers with a comprehensive framework for evaluating their existing supply chain systems, for evaluating the various technology options available, and for targeting the elements within it that can be automated with the least risk and highest return on investment.

3 out of 5 stars SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT FOR DUMMIES.......2001-11-07

I think that should be the title of the book.
Ram & Sabine Reddy have written a practical handbook useful for all Managers, cutting across their specializations & levels. It offers a birds eye view without skipping the details. A book all Managers can use for practical & effective management of costs across the supply chain.

Ram's real life experience & Sabine's objective research & analysis make an ideal combination of theory & practice.
This book could be recommended as study material for IT/ Management students

    5 out of 5 stars Well written.......2001-11-01

Well laid out and written. Puts new concepts in easy to understand terms - for all levels of managers and from different supply chains. Worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for managers in modern corporations.......2001-10-03

"I found this book especially relevant in the current recessionary environment.
With companies struggling to retain their customer base, the
one area that can immediately affect the bottom-line is company's supply chain.
It is a must read for managers and "foot-soldiers" in modern
corporations who are under increasing pressure to reduce costs and improve profitability.
The book is written in a clear manner incorporating business
strategy, organizational, technology and implementation issues. The authors take a complex subject and present it in a manner that can be understood by managers from all areas within the firm - finance, manufacturing, sales, and IT.
Excellent read! - I recommend it highly."

5 out of 5 stars Finally - a systemic view of the hope for technology Nirvana.......2001-09-26

Ram and Sabine have written a thorough book on all the issues that must be dealt with concurrently when dealing with electronic business. As an IT consultant, I have watched many companies jump into large ERP initiatives thinking that buying a big box of software is adequate. Any manager or executive thinking about leveraging technology should start here so they are able to really understand the ramifications and magnitude of these types of projects. Also very helpful - the step by step process in Chapter 8 for selection! This book is a clear, realistic primer for anyone in e-business.

        Description:
Some enterprises adopt highly vertically integrated structures to carry out essential value chain activities whilst others derive economic benefits from adopting extended structures using Internet-based technologies and through the effective integration of supplier relationships. Extended supply chain alliances can enable low operating/production costs as each partner firm specialises in defined core functions. Such benefits however have to be weighed against the necessary investments in financial and management information systems to enable activities undertaken by supply chain partners to be properly controlled and coordinated. As inter-enterprise activities grow in size and complexity, information system and electronic linkage costs also increase due to possible system incompatibilities with prospective suppliers, the need to meet regulatory compliance requisites, the increased probability of system breakdowns as connection points with suppliers increase and security assurance measures over cross-enterprise information networks. These virtual integration (VI) costs will be low when few suppliers are linked to the extending enterprise. Once a certain level of VI complexity is achieved, the further scalability of supply chain integration will no longer prove cost effective. When this ''threshold'' point is reached, it will be preferable for a firm to cease further VI. In fact VI costs can increase even without further supply chain extension due to changing technical risks, application difficulties or environmental turbulence and it may then be worthwhile for the firm to scale back to a higher degree of vertical integration. This paper develops a real options based model to demonstrate the VI linked cost/benefit dynamics of enterprise extension and provides a numerical illustration of the relationships captured by the model. The model extends our knowledge of factors which render extended structures stable rather than transient enterprise forms.

                Book Description

Scientific knowledge alone will not help countries achieve sustainable management of land, water and biota. Everyone now realises that a partnership is needed between land and water users, scientists, managers and the community if countries are to achieve the goal of preserving rural resources.

This book deals with broad issues relating to resource decline and how different groups such as farmers, rural town dwellers, resource managers and government deal with these issues from social, economic and ecological points of view.

                Book Description

Spreadsheets provide one of the most easily learned routes to scientific computing. This book uses Excel®, the most powerful spreadsheet available, to explore and solve problems in general and chemical data analysis. It follows the usual sequence of college textbooks in analytical chemistry: statistics, chemical equilibria, pH calculations, titrations, and instrumental methods such as chromatography, spectrometry, and electroanalysis. The text contains many examples of data analysis, and uses spreadsheets for numerical simulations and testing analytical procedures. It treats modern data analysis methods such as linear and nonlinear least squares in great detail, as well as methods based on Fourier transformation. It shows how matrix methods can be powerful tools in data analysis, and how easily these are implemented on a spreadsheet. It describes in detail how to simulate chemical kinetics on a spreadsheet. It also introduces the reader to the use of VBA, the macro language of Microsoft Office, which lets the user import higher-level computer programs into the spreadsheet.

5 out of 5 stars How to use Excel in Analytical Chemistry by Robert de Levie.......2005-08-22

Excellent book setting out applications in Chemistry using Excel. Well chosen examples embracing spectroscopy, chromatography, electrochemistry, kinetics and acid-base theory illustrate the ease of minipulation of data via Excel. The section on Fourier Transform I really liked, and this is followed by a good coverage of noise filtering and deconvolution.

3 out of 5 stars Didactic and academic.......2001-05-19

This is a book which wold like to be a text book and not a popular one. No CD or disk with the exampels is provide. Only the macros could be downloaded from the web. This book contain many exampels. Most of the exampels are in the sort of instructions i.e. 1. open a new spreadsheet 2. enter the label.. 3.In row 11, starting with cell A11 enter the labels pH, [H+]....

15.anchor the graph on cell b1,... etc.

The point is that there are much words in this book and less figures which show the Exell worksheet after each/everal instruction. That make this book to be less fraindly then other books on Ecell.

                      Book Description

While presidents have always kept a watchful eye on the military, our generals have been equally vigilant in assessing the commander-in-chief. Their views, however, have been relatively neglected in the literature on civil-military relations. By taking us inside the military's mind in this matter, Dale Herspring's new book provides a path-breaking, utterly candid, and much-needed reassessment of a key relationship in American government and foreign policymaking.

As Herspring reminds us, that relationship has often been a very tense, even extremely antagonistic one, partly because the military has become a highly organized and very effective bureaucratic interest group. Reevaluating twelve presidents--from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush--Herspring shows how the intensity of that conflict depends largely on the military's perception of the president's leadership style. Quite simply, presidents who show genuine respect for military culture are much more likely to develop effective relations with the military than those who don't.

Each chapter focuses on one president and his key administrators-such as Robert McNamara, Henry Kissinger, and Donald Rumsfeld--and contains case studies showing how the military reacted to the president's leadership. In the final chapter, Herspring ranks the presidents according to their degree of conflict with the military: Lyndon Johnson received exceedingly low marks for being overbearing and dismissive of the armed forces. George H. W. Bush inspired respect for not micromanaging military affairs. And Bill Clinton was savaged by military leaders for having been a "draft dodger," cutting Pentagon spending, and giving the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" tag an unnecessarily high profile.

From World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Herspring clearly shows how the nature of civilian control has changed during the past half century. He also reveals how the military has become a powerful bureaucratic interest group very much like others in Washington--increasingly politicized, media-savvy, and as much accountable to Congress as to the commander-in-chief.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

This is a workman like book containing good information, but its style is somewhat pedestrian. Its author is quite fair in his treatment of U.S. Presidents from Roosevelt through G.W. Bush and their relationships to the military, but he should have exercised better judgment in the book's organization. In his efforts to be fair and impartial for all administrations, he essentially followed a pretty rigid format and devoted longer chapters to those administrations that lasted eight years and shorter chapters to those that lasted four years or less. This is fine in some ways, but unfortunate in others. For example, this reviewer would have preferred him to provide a much more detailed discussion of the Truman Presidency during which a unified Department of Defense was created by merging the War and Navy Departments over the strong objections of the Navy and at the same time the first efforts were made to create a unified military command structure creating the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In the same vain, a more extensive treatment of the varying roles of the Secretaries of Defense (SECDEF) over these years would have been welcome. Certainly, the author provides enough material on this subject to tantalize the reader into wanting to read more about the subject. His premise that the relations between the Joint Chiefs and the various U.S. Presidents can be examined without also examining the role played by the SECDEFis just plain wrong. All in all this is a good book that could have been a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars Deep, probing analysis of modern american military history.......2005-04-15

I had the pleasure of reviewing this book while still in its manuscript form. If you have ever wondered what went on behind the scenes of the American Military, the interactions of a President and the key players of a military this book will not disappoint you.

Dr. Herspring's well researched book analyzes how the leadership of the Presidents conflicted or meshed with his top Military Advisors as well as the Joint Chiefs of Staff and how ultimately this affected the history and the military actions of our country.

A must read for any Civil-Military Relations or Political Science student.

This study outlines the main features of the theory and practice of political power in Muslim polities in the Middle Ages against the background of Near Eastern traditions of kingship, particularly Hellenistic, Persian, and Byzantine. The early Arab-Muslim polity is treated as an integral part of late Antiquity and the book explores the way in which older traditions were transposed into Islamic form and given specifically Islamic textual sanction.

al-Azmeh's book is half-comparative and half-chronology of the development of Muslim conceptions of Kingship. This work thoroughly puts to rest notions of Muslim exceptialionism by demonstrating the polyvalence of kingship discourse as well as its the various exchanges, borrowings, and influences adapted from Byzantine and Persian concepts of kingship. He takes considerable steps to remove the exotic from Muslim Kingship to instead place it within the framework of its evolving historical environment throughout the middle ages. It is a rare work that combines broadstrokes with a stringent concern for accuracy and nuance.

This book is a scientific and spititual view of how the human species has evolved over all of time to become the frightened and violent and deceitful cariacature of his true nature. Humankind is experiencing "growing pains" that if seen and understood would change his inherited destructive attitudes for "solving problems" into truly humane solutions that would turn from a slow painful suicide to choices that will fulfill his potential and the destiny that is inherent in him. This book gives insight into this process so beautifully

as book marks, remain on my 1987 edition. Another swig of this marvelous gentleman's work dries out the wet algae in my thinking.

Born in 1903, Konrad Lorenz, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine/Physiology, does not speak down to his reader. For the reader is often one who perceives the illness around him, who is already frightened by his own smallness and witnesses this waning as a root cause of our present-day world problems.

This gifted scholar selects concepts from his magic bag in a manner which best describes an understanding poet or novelist: straight to the reader's heart and mind, concepts which people hold in their deepest "No Admittance", but for various and often unavoidable reasons, do not express.

He begins by writing truthfully that with the nuclear threat, the prospects for human survival are dismal, continuing that even if this does not occur, if somehow there is a check on human's "incredibly stupid and blind conduct", he still is in grave danger of the "progressive decline of those human attributes and attainments which constitute their humanity."

This master animal behaviorist shares stories of Man's (and animals') pleasure in collecting -- baby fish miraculously appearing in one's aquarium, fruit in one's orchard, increase of the herd, a "stock split" - items which are of one kind. These, in his opinion, are more influenced by genetic programs than other kinds of joy found in possessions. But, he cites the immense danger that the greater the collection, the more intense is the desire, the urge for more. That this rage to collect can consume the personality is no secret, he wryly observes.

He continues to write of the neurotic lust for power, threatening the existence of all mankind - the highest possible position in the pecking order (not sic), and the utter ridiculous sight of it.

In his search into animal and human behavior, he often uses the word, "Gestalt", which means the coming together of diverse impressions and memories into one formidable idea.

In his twenty-five years with shamas, birds said to be the greatest "artists" among song birds, which species assemble beautiful, complicated songs when at play, he notes that should this bird have to defend its territory, court a mate or in any way have his song forced to serve a utilitarian purpose, the resultant stress would cause a loss of the song's awe-inspiring beauty.

From birds to humans, humans have an astonishing sensitivity to harmonies, the sensory and brain structures which are the Gestalt perception, one of the most important structures of the human. We cannot inspect or see this in ourselves, but enough is known that there is no doubt that they exist, can save us from not only extinction, but from having a life "not worth living." (not sic.)

                                Excerpts:

"Large populations mean that there are too many voters and too few to be voted upon."

"Very few people, regardless of how intelligent or morally faultless they may be, are capable of preserving their whole humaneness once they are in positions of power."

"Many people appear to be 'normal' because the humane voice within them has been struck dumb."

"Thomas Jefferson lived long enough to witness and realize that freedom of the press can be exploited for the dissemination of lies."

                                * * * * *

We will not be more fearful from reading "The Waning of Humaneness", for the strength of humans to bring beauty and selfless meaning to the world remains in our hands. In Lorenz's words, "A closed system is a non-living system."
