Engaging personal finance tome.......2002-11-12

Everyone knows that couples fight about money but it's still hard to stop. Ms. Knuckey offers strategies to manage the "family" finances without coming to blows. Her advice is sound and understandable. I recommend this book to new couples and those who have been together for a while.

One of the most meaningful books on finance I've ever read. Deborah Knuckey puts complex financial concepts within easy reach of readers of all backgrounds, while keeping the subject matter lively with real-world examples, humorous asides and just plain good advice. I wish I had read this book ten years ago!

Like many people, I have found that while my personal finance was in check, I have had trouble "sharing" money in a relationship. Agreeing how money is to be spent and how it should be handled is one of the most common sources of friction between couples. This book addresses the very real challenge facing people when deciding to share not only their lives, but their money.

Ms. Knuckey clearly explains how people's view on money differs according to their background, education and personalities. Without preaching specific financial advice, her book outlines the most common problems that couples face when handling money together, and some suggested ways in which to mediate, compromise and agree upon mutually beneficial financial strategies.

Wish I'd read this years ago.......2002-11-06

This book could have saved my first marriage. This time around, my new husband and I are determined to get it right, and we both started reading this last week and doing the exercises - great stuff!

Who would have thought that talking about money can make us closer? This book shows that money doesn't have to be a source of conflict, and we are now developing a financial plan based on our life goals - to grow old together in comfort. Over the past decade the importance of natural resources for sustainable agricultural development has been increasingly discussed at international forums and conferences. Aside from the sustainable management of soil, water, and air, it now seems to be accepted that the sustainable management of genetic resources is one of the four indispensable preconditions for a sustainable agriculture. The discussion on conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), however, has to reflect the costs of conservation as well. These have not yet been discussed intensively. The study analyzes the conservation costs of plant genetic resources; it also assesses the effectiveness of conservation and the efficiency of the different conservation instruments. It is based on extensive surveys in relevant countries. Following the detailed cost and impact analysis, the results show that the effectiveness of conservation strategies may be increased.

I bought vol 1 and vol 2 at the same time, not really certain what to expect after reading some of the mixed reviews.

I must say I don't regret for a moment my purchases.

The Me 109 expert might be not satisfied enough(I couldn't tell in all honesty) but mid level enthusiasts will have more and beyond packed in one book. At this price, it is a steal that I warmly recommend.

..another weak effort from the French - Hartman's K-4 indeed - nobody knows what it looked like - least of all these French authors - too many garish colours, banana-shaped fuselage profile drawings and old myths repeated..

Mid to late Bf109 profiles.......2006-03-21

If you are interested in different colour schemes for the F through to the K versions of the Messerschmitt Bf109, then this is the book for you. As always, colours are subject to personal interpretation as these are invariably translated from black and white photographs - but all in all, most profiles seem to be a sensible representation.

The artwork may appear flat and does not reach levels of aviation artists like Richard J. Caruana. The perspective layout is also on the weak side, particularly the under-surfaces. The weathering effect can be annoying as it is done on a permanent layer and is repeated on every profile. Finally, there are occasional schemes where it is too obvious that the only changes are the aircraft number and all else is merely repetition.

All in all however, the effort is commendable and the publication is in fact a good reference source from the scheme aspect.

SOLID SUMMARY OF THE K-4.......2003-09-29

This book is outstanding. The plates contain an unparalled 32 examples the K-4, including Hartmann's, which I had seen only as a poster. The many versions of the G are also well represented. This book's scholarship on the K-4 is not as extensive as can be found in similar books from the Czech Republic and Poland, but I nonetheless recommend this work without reservation especially for students of the the air war in 1945. It's great to see that Amazon has made easily available this excellent work on "the last of the eagles."

A must buy!.......2003-03-16

See my review for volume 1 to this series. Splendid reference for those who appreciate the complex camouflage patterns used by the Luftwaffe. Very interesting in how various markings were applied as well. No one bothered to edit these books but so what, at 13 bucks, it is a crime to not buy it.

Loaded with important and interesting information.......2006-08-17

This is an examination of the American Indians who inhabited southern New England (including Long Island) from roughly Cape Ann near Boston to the Housotonic River in Connecticut. All aspects of the Natives' life and culture are considered, with separate chapters focusing on settlement, agriculture and trade, work and gender, livelihood, the role of the sachem (tribal leader), kinship, cosmology and religion, and ritual. Bragdon quotes frequently from first-hand accounts kept by early Europeans, including Roger Williams, William Wood, and Edward Winslow. But she also cites the archeological record, detailing much of what has come to light at various sites within the region. It's estimated that about 90,000 Natives populated the area at the time of European contact; epidemics and rapid European population growth slowly at first, and then much more quickly, reduced that number greatly by 1650. The very earliest relations between the Indians and whites seemed to be friendly, but that didn't last long: cultural differences were too great to sustain cooperation. I found the most interesting chapters to be those about the sachems, social relations, and rituals, though all of the book is filled with meaningful and compelling detailed information. The book takes a worthy spot among the many other outstanding volumes in Oklahoma's "Civilization of the American Indian" series. Highly recommended.

Dense, but worth it.......2002-02-06

This book is a keenly interesting look into the ways, the works, and the world-views of the early inhabitants of what today is Southern New England. Dr. Bragdon writes not in an historical style, but rather in the ethnographic tradition. Thus, her chapters are sometimes rather slow going unless you're an anthropologist. There's a lot of jargon. It's still a great read for the non-specialist, however. I would like to recommend keeping a dictionary handy, for times when the esoteric nomenclature of anthropology becomes as impenetrable as a pre-colonial flock of passenger pigeons.

The book is not divided up by tribe, as one might expect. Instead, Dr. Bragdon has divided her work by conceptual paradigms, or by umbrella descriptions of features of life shared by all the peoples of the land under discussion. Chapters delve into cosmology, ritual, or social relations, as well as "Kinship as Ideology," "Metaphors and Models of Livelihood," and "The Quotidian World:Work, Gender, Time, and Space."

By the way -- if you don't read fairly carefully at the beginning, you may miss something important. Dr. Bragdon has chosen to employ the term "Ninnimissinuok" as a blanket term for members of ALL the local Algonquian tribes. Just be aware that that what the word means -- otherwise you might waste a lot of time scratching your head, wondering who, exactly, these Ninnimissinuoks are supposed to be. I mention this because it's not nearly so well-known a term as, for example, Narragansett, or Wampanoag -- but perhaps it should be. The author demonstrates it's validity, and it's importance.

The bibliography at the end of this book is worth the book's price, all on it's own. There's a discouragingly large amount of poorly researched, pseudo-mystical writing out there, on the subject of Native Americans. Well, you won't find any here! All the cited works I've tried to locate have been of an extremely high caliber. The bibliography alone could keep you happily reading about the native peoples of Southern New England for many, many moons.

Again, this book can be a little steep going at times, if you aren't trained as an anthropologist, but it's worth the effort. Definitely two thumbs up.

There are many proposed aims for scientific inquiry--to explain or predict events, to confirm or falsify hypotheses, or to find hypotheses that cohere with our other beliefs in some logical or probabilistic sense. This book is devoted to a different proposal--that the logical structure of the scientist's method should guarantee eventual arrival at the truth given the scientist's background assumptions. Interest in this methodological property, called "logical reliability," stems from formal learning theory, which draws its insights not from the theory of probability, but from the theory of computability. Kelly first offers an accessible explanation of formal learning theory, then goes on to develop and explore a systematic framework in which various standard learning theoretic results can be seen as special cases of simpler and more general considerations. This approach answers such important questions as whether there are computable methods more reliable than Bayesian updating or Popper's method of conjectures and refutations. Finally, Kelly clarifies the relationship between the resulting framework and other standard issues in the philosophy of science, such as probability, causation, and relativism. His work is a major contribution to the literature and will be essential reading for scientists, logicians, and philosophers

Are the results in this book reliable?.......2005-06-09

How can a learner, be it a human or otherwise, be guaranteed of arriving at a correct result before it encounters novel situations or acquires new knowledge? How reliable is the learning process at the time it is adopted? The author, in this lengthy and detailed treatise, tries to answer these questions in the framework of what he calls `formal learning theory.' This branch of learning theory is more mathematical than others, and studies to what extent a learning system can be judged as reliable. This book certainly outlines the main results, but it is difficult to see their relevance, as the author does not relate them to practical learning systems. This is not a surprise of course, given the nature of formal learning theory. In addition, there are many places in the book that seem to be a mere relabeling of certain results in set-theoretic topology, thus making them appear vacuous from a mathematical standpoint.

The author also agrees to the standard definition of induction (ala Sextus Empiricus), with its goal of establishing a "universal" in terms of a particular (finite) set of observations. Thus induction will not be a reliable learning strategy, since some of the particulars may be omitted and conflict with the universal. One cannot include all of the particulars, since they form an infinite collection. But there are other views of induction that are being used in contemporary learning theory and artificial intelligence. The author is apparently unaware (or does not consider it relevant) of the research in inductive logic programming that have given a deductive foundation to inductive, scientific reasoning based on `inverse resolution'. In a first order theory, hypotheses can be generated deductively using background knowledge and examples, and by using a particular notion of language bias to constrain the search for the hypotheses. These systems of hypothesis generation even have practical use, and serve as a counterexample to the author's contention that inductive inference is not deductive. Of course, the way he understands it, i.e. taken from the literature on the philosophy of science, it is certainly not deductive. Hence, induction, as viewed by the author, will never yield a certain result, i.e. one obtained by deduction, and so he endeavors to find measures of convergence for inductive systems that will "logically guarantee" convergence to the "truth."

The notion of truth as a scientist may hold to it is not really discussed in any detail in the book. Instead, some rather vague notions of truth, such as "correctness" or "predictiveness" are used, which are (in a major portion of the book) only supposed to depend on the hypothesis and the data stream. Data streams are taken to sequences of natural numbers that encode discrete "observations", and the author rather cavalierly allows the existence of infinite data streams, despite his assumption that truth or correctness is to be an "empirical' relation. The scientist is also viewed as a passive observer, with the data stream not depending on the actions that the scientist takes. This of course means that data streams coming from quantum systems will not be modeled by this approach. In addition, the difference between closed and open sets cannot be detected in real-world computations, thus casting further doubt on the relevance of the author's results to real scientific practice.

Since the author wants to stay in the framework of mathematical logic, and since this is a book on philosophy, no attempt is made to compare the results derived in the book with historical practices in scientific research. Such a comparison would lend more credence to the formal models of hypothesis creation or theory construction that are put forward by the author. The construction of formal models for scientific research or other types of learning is fairly straightforward as this book shows. These models are abstracted from the processes that one observes in science and one can believe that they do represent what scientists actually do. However, if one is to have great confidence that these models are accurate, one must compare them to actual case histories in scientific research. This is not done in this book, and neither in any other one on the same topic that this reviewer is aware of. This aggravates the view held by many professional scientists that philosophers of science are engaging in sheer speculation and fantasies of thought. It is fair to say that such a view is very close to the truth, and unfortunately this book is evidence for that view.

Excellent overview of scientific methodology and philosophy.......2000-08-15

This book discusses the philosophy of science with an emphasis on modern computer and cognitive science. The wonderful cartoons aid the reader throughout, making even the more technical parts accessible.
