    Book Description

This newly revised edition sheds more light on why accountants often fail to deliver the truth about a company's position or to warn of its impending failure. Well-known examples of corporate collapse from the 1960s to the 1990s and beyond are studied as well as the recent HIH and One.Tel collapses. The volume is essential reading for professional accountants and auditors, company directors and managers, regulators, corporate lawyers and investors. Book Description

This provocative book investigates the role of accounting in the sudden collapse of companies which were apparently reaping healthy profits. Why has accounting failed to reveal companies’ true financial position or warn of impending collapse? Examining a number of well-known cases from the last three decades, the authors argue that there are serious problems inherent in the system of reporting financial information. In a lively and highly readable book, the authors balance broad interpretation and recommendations for reform with fine detail of particular cases.

5 out of 5 stars Extra Practice Test Included.......2005-11-20

I just recently took the GRE (2005) and this book was the best thing that I could have found. Contrary to the other reviews, the practice test in this book is different from the one that you will be sent upon registering for the test (they now send the 2000 version for free). On top of that they include extra practice questions grouped by subject area. The only downfall is that they don't provide detailed explinations, but the questions were completely representative of the kind that were on my exam. This is the only GRE Chemistry study book that I would recommend. It's worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this Book for the Additional Practice ??'s........2001-11-05

I am taking the Chem GRE on Nov. 10, 2001. I sent away for this book hoping to get an additional full length exam from ETS, as opposed to other prep books where the material covered isn't always relevant. Unfortunately, the full length exam in this book is the same exam I was sent for free by ETS with my confirmation ticket. (Form GR9527) I was disappointed by this. However, their practice questions (106 in all, grouped by field of chem) were almost like having a second practice exam. The practice questions are at a similar level of difficulty to those on ETS' practice exam. So if you buy this book, be aware that you'll only be using about half of it. Good Luck!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent test practice.......2000-04-08

This book contains exams, with questions almost identical to those you would see on an actual exam. This is really good because after trying out some tests in this book, you'll know exactly which areas you need to work on. It includes answers, though most answers lack explanations.

                        Book Description

Quasielastic neutron scattering has made many important contributions to the atomistic elucidation of diffusion processes in solids. The aim of this book is to inform researchers in solid state physics, solid state chemistry, and inorganic materials science of the potential of quasielastic neutron scattering. The book has been written for experimentalists and contains in its first part the theoretical background on neutrons, neutron scattering, and solid state diffusion, which is essential for the proper use of quasielastic neutron scattering. This general part should be useful for non-experts in the field of neutron scattering and diffusion as well. The second part of the book addresses the experts in this vivid field of research. It summarizes the scientific applications of quasielastic neutron scattering to special solid state materials systems, as for example to hydrogen in metals or to diffusion in solid state ionic conductors.

                              Book Description

On October 8, 1862, Union and Confederate forces clashed near Perryville, Kentucky, in what would be the largest battle ever fought on Kentucky soil. The climax of a campaign that began two months before in northern Mississippi, Perryville came to be recognized as the high water mark of the western Confederacy. Some said the hard-fought battle, forever remembered by participants for its sheer savagery and for their commanders' confusion, was the worst battle of the war, losing the last chance to bring the Commonwealth into the Confederacy and leaving Kentucky firmly under Federal control. Although Gen. Braxton Bragg's Confederates won the day, Bragg soon retreated in the face of Gen. Don Carlos Buell's overwhelming numbers.

Perryville: This Grand Havoc of Battle is the definitive account of this important conflict. Kenneth Noe details the events leading up to Bragg's Kentucky Campaign, places the battle squarely in the political and social context of Kentucky's Civil War, paints the battle in great detail, and follows the armies back to Tennessee. Based on new research, including dozens of collections never before used in understanding Perryville's significance, the book offers the most accurate and detailed depiction of what happened that fateful October day.

While providing all the parry and thrust one might expect from an excellent battle narrative, the book also reflects the new trends in Civil War history in its concern for ordinary soldiers and civilians caught in the slaughterhouse. The last chapter, unique among Civil War battle narratives, even discusses the battle's veterans, their families, efforts to preserve the battlefield, and the many ways Americans have remembered and commemorated Perryville.

5 out of 5 stars This is what a battle history should be!.......2005-01-12

The Battle of Perryville, which took place in central Kentucky in October 1862, was in my opinion one of the most important battles of the Civil War. In a day of intense combat, Confederate and Federal troops fought over the Chaplin Hills northwest and west of the little (even to today) town of Perryville. In the end, the Southerners had gained a tactical victory, but lost the campaign, perhaps ending the last chance the Confederacy had of bringing in Kentucky.

In "Perryville: This Grand Havoc of Battle," Kenneth W. Noe provides the reader with an excellent study of the battle. From the Confederate movement northward from Chattanooga to their subsequent retreat back to the Volunteer State, Mr. Noe covers all the important events. He is very critical of Union General Don Carlos Buell's handling of the Army of the Ohio during the maneuvering in Middle Tennessee, and also reveals the in-fighting, and discontent, present within that army throughout this campaign. Mr. Noe covers the entire campaign, from start to finish, very well.

The maps in this book are second to none, allowing the reader to easily follow the movements of both Northern and Southern soldiers, as well as understand the topograpy of the battlefield. Interspersed throughout the narrative are old photos of commanders involved in the battle and of the battlefield, along with modern photos of sites on the battlefield. Combine these with Mr. Noe's excellent writing and one has a great narrative of the 1862 Kentucky Campaign.

The Battle of Perryville has been all but ingored by Civil War historians. However, Mr. Noe has gone far in bringing this deserving battle to the forefront. No Civil War library is complete without this book. After reading this book, I find myself hoping that Mr. Noe will continue to write volumes on Civil War campaigns. Get this book!

4 out of 5 stars Bragg versus Buell.......2003-12-14

Perryville may not be one of the best-known Civil War battles, but its story is well worth telling. Kenneth Noe does a good job in explaining the events of October 8th 1862, making a complex and confusing battle comprehensible. He puts the battle into context by explaining why Braxton Bragg's Confederate Army of the Mississippi headed into Kentucky. The prize at stake was the allegiance of the border state, whether it would follow the South or stay in the Union.

Noe is fairly critical of Bragg, even arguing that he suffered from mental illness. This is one of the least successful aspects of his analysis. Noe recognises the dangers of using modern psychiatry to investigate historical figures, but then proceeds to expose his analysis to just this danger by classifying Bragg as a manic-depressive. Bragg had his faults and in the Perryville campaign made mistakes, but the fact remains that his 16,000 men took on Buell's 55,000 man Army of the Ohio and beat them. Bragg's leadership does not look quite so insane when it is remembered that he won the battle. Noe is not nearly as critical of Buell, but it would be equally easy to apply a psychiatric analysis to a man who was miles away from the fighting while his army fought for its life. Noe's analysis generally does not give enough credit to the Confederate performance and rather whitewashes the Union army. Bragg's army faced odds at least as bad as Lee's army did at Chancellorsville, yet the Army of the Potomac is routinely condemned for its performance there, and Lee's leadership is generally praised while Hooker's is usually criticised. Bragg should certainly get some credit for the victory at Perryville and should not be put on the psychiatrist's couch.

Noe should however, be praised for the depth of his research and the clarity of his writing. He uses contemporary sources well to give the reader a sense of what it was like to be fighting the battle. His book is not an especially easy read, but this has more to do with the complexity of the battle, than any faults in Noe's style of writing. It would have helped to have a few more maps. The maps, which are provided, are adequate, but not as good as in some other Civil War books. These criticisms though, are outweighed by the merits of Noe's book. I very much enjoyed reading it and learned a great deal about an important and interesting battle.

                              5 out of 5 stars A model campaign study.......2003-03-15

An unfailingly interesting account by a fine historian. Kenneth W. Noe has made sense of one of the most neglected and confusing campaigns of the entire Civil War. He has sorted through the geographical complexities and factionalism in both armies to show his readers why people should still care about what happened near an obscure Kentucky village over 140 years ago. His work is truly a pioneering one. Unlike most campaign studies, this excellent book pays considerable attention to the treatment of the wounded, the effects of battle on the local landscape, the lives of veterans after the war, and even how the battlefield itself was interpreted and preserved. It will be the standard account for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on neglected battle.......2003-01-24

Perryville has been pretty much ignored by Civil War historians except for Kenneth Hafendorfer's poineering book and this one, which is newer, better researched, and has better (but far fewer) maps. Professor Noe has pretty much written the definitive account of this fairly obscure battle. It covers, besides the battle itself, all of Bragg's campaign in Kentucky, from the viewpoints of generals, soldiers, and civilians alike and his views are reasonable, unbiased, and well thought out. Additionally, he writes well and the book was a real joy to read. Highly recommended.

                                    Book Description

Despite the dominance of scientific thought in the modern era, the ancient practice of astrology has staged an astonishing revival over the last hundred years. Newspaper astrologers become millionaires, financial stargazers advise stock market players, and powerful corporations and astro-psychologists offer to unravel the secrets of the psyche. Princess Diana, Ronald Reagan, Carl Jung, and Ted Hughes are just some of the prominent figures who regularly consulted astrologers. Now this erudite book examines the deep-rooted significance of astrology in the contemporary world. Exploring its language and appeal, Neil Spencer looks at the extraordinary role astrology has played in the history of ideas. Irreverent, surprising, and eminently readable, this is astrology demystified. Neil Spencer is the astrology columnist for Britain’s The Observer.

5 out of 5 stars The whole truth about modern astrology.......2002-06-10

Or as near as one can get to such a thing! Astrologer Neil Spencer has put together a first class comprehensive overview of the position of astrology in contemporary Western society. It is entertaining, balanced, intelligent and often very funny. "Believers" (I am a professional astrologer myself) and "sceptics" can both benefit from reading this book.

Early on there is a brief guide to the basics of astrology itself, followed by a quick look at the history of the subject over the last few hundred years. Most of the book is taken up with considerations of every possible aspect (pun intended) over the last century. The rise of newspaper horoscopes, psychological astrology as self-development, statistical evidence or lack of it, the use of astrology by the likes of Ronald Reagan and Princess Diana, successes and failures in predicting the future.

Spencer does a good job of exploding many popular ideas that are held by many e.g. being born on the cusp (you are actually either one sign or another) and the ever-present myth of the Age of Aquarius (highly dubious as to what it actually is). Although Spencer's own astrological input takes a back seat most of the time, countless examples of astrology in action are scattered throughout. The chart comparison between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky is an entertaining example!

Read this book if you REALLY want to know what astrology is all about.

A hero and a friendship born on the Mississippi

The legendary pirate and hero of the nineteenth century Jean Laffite is the main character in a tale as tall as can be. Young Jean knows about as much as a body can about the Mississippi River, so it's up to him to save the day when the river suddenly goes bone-dry down New Orleans way. A walk north reveals the problem: a whale has swum up the mighty river and gotten himself lodged between the banks. Ever resourceful, Jean manages to solve the problem with a mere pinch of cayenne pepper, making a friend for life at the same time.
Pairing a folksy narrative with pictures full of life, this original story is fun for the whole family.

Jean Laffite is portrayed in this story as a larger than life American character in the Paul Bunyan, tall tale tradition. Jean saves the day without violence, just folksy ingenuity and gentle force. The illustrations are charming, with full, rich, electric colors that match the vibrancy and charm of the story.

                                      Book Description

Lucchesi and The Whale is an unusual work of fiction by controversial critic and novelist Frank Lentricchia. Its central character is the obsessed Thomas Lucchesi Jr., whose preoccupations include traveling to visit friends in their last moments of life—because grief alone inspires him to write—and searching for secret meaning in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. A writer himself, Lucchesi tells his students that he teaches "only because [his] fiction is commercially untouchable" and to "never forget that." Isolated, anxiety-ridden, and relentlessly self-involved, he does achieve a precarious triumph, finding "a secret meaning" to Moby-Dick. And Lentricchia’s creations—both Lucchesi and The Whale and its main character—reveal this meaning through a series of ingeniously self-reflective metaphors, in much the way that Melville himself did in and through Moby-Dick.

This novel surpasses all Lentricchia's other efforts thus far. Playful, but obsessively serious, this book teaches us more than anything else. For this the professor comes through, as well as my understanding.

This is the ultimate whaling narrative, superbly written.

                                        Book Description

Frank's Whales details the efforts of a small, but dedicated, group of volunteers who are doing their part to save the most endangered large mammal in the oceans. North Atlantic Right Whales, hunted almost to extinction, use Northeast Florida coastal waters as their only known calving grounds. With an estimated population of just 325 whales remaining, scientists and volunteers are working to minimize the whales' greatest threat - the human impact of ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement.

Led by marine mammal scientists, volunteers gather data about the whales from shore-based observation points. Frank Gromling tells the fascinating story of the endangered whales and the special role being played by a handful of volunteers. For anyone interested in nature, conservation, whales, and volunteer programs, this is required reading.

Many of us want to do something to protect the environment but we're overwhelmed by the problems. Frank's Whales does an excellent job of describing how an individual can play a critical part in preserving the well-being of enormous yet fragile creatures. Aside from the wit and humor it conveys, the book is a touching testimony of the positive impact our stewardship can have on the world around us and on our own lives.

A lot of people retire and lie in the sun. Not Frank Gromling. He rediscovered the Atlantic Ocean and discovered the Right Whale. Probably most don't realize that this species of whale migrates down the coast of the United States as far as Florida, then returns north in the summer. Thus the name and the book, "Frank's Whales." This delightful novelette recounts his adventures as he contributed his time as a volunteer assisting in the task of helping the specie survive. Ironically, being named the "Right" Whale was wrong for the species and they were hunted almost to extinction. "Frank's Whales," is loaded with facts concerning the history of the Right Whale. It gives detailed information about the specie itself and how humans can work to guarantee its survival. This is a little book that should be in every library.

5 out of 5 stars Survival of one species dependent on humans.......2003-06-08

It's a scenario that's been replayed throughout history.

The numbers of a species approach the edge of extinction. Just as with Loggerhead Sea Turtles, American Bald Eagles, and Peregrine Falcons, the Right Whale has a better chance of survival because individuals not only cared about its well-being, but took action to assist.

Few people may know, until Frank's Whales lands in their lap, that Northeast Florida is a critical birthing ground for the Right Whale, the rarest large whale in the Atlantic Ocean. Frank Gromling's book explores this majestic creature's natural history and the protection programs that hope to safeguard this whale's numbers, beginning with the whalers who, in prior centuries, reduced populations to a critical level, and moving forward to modern times, when ship strikes pose a serious threat.

The author relates his own experiences as part of a volunteer group that records observations and data to assist government agencies in formulating plans for the Right Whale's protection.

This book is perfect for many purposes. For the environmentally conscious, it's a lovely example of those who do more than protest: they give their time to help on behalf of a cause they hold dear.

For any student doing a life sciences report or project, this book will also be an invaluable resource, because it offers original research from first hand accounts, something not readily available for many projects.

The book is also interesting to a casual reader, because Frank Gromling tells a good story in an unpretentious, direct manner that puts the reader on the observation deck with him.

A bonus in this book involves exceptional black and white photographs of these whales and other ocean species, and related charts and maps.

I would highly recommend this book to any reader.
