Customer Reviews:
read this before going for it.......2007-05-22
This book provides a very incomprehensive and inadequate exposition of many of the key issues. The first four chapters are the most poorly written with unexplained examples. The book, moreover, gives a very poor explanation of pricing techniques which should have formed the core of this text. ON the whole, i would not recommend it to anyone who wants to gain a good introduction to this topic at this price.
Derivatives - best book in the market.......2001-12-18
When it comes to Derivative products, pricing, valuation, the markets, and all the other issues, such as rating, documentation, accounting and taxation, you could not get a better mentor than Satyajit DAS, and this book is his best ever. It is a collection of topics and authors who are the leaders and the best in the field. THERE is simply NO other book that can be called a HANDBOOK on Derivatives, for everyone, students, financial professions, and professors, and for beginners, as well as advanced.
A poor effort.......2000-06-28
I dislike this book for a number of reasons. Firstly it is incomprehensible, especially the examples. Some of the concepts are also not well explained. Secondly, it is not user-friendly. The ideas demonstrated are not presented in a coherent manner. Lastly, being basically a compilation from different authors, the chapters are also not well connected to each other. Overall a very poor effort.
A hodge-podge of chapters written mostly by accountan ts........1999-08-06
About half the chapters are written by various accountants employed by Price Waterhouse. Only 2 out of about 20 chapter authors are recognizable names in the field.
Very poor description and coverage of key issues........1999-08-01
In my opinion, this book provides a very incomprehensive and inadequate exposition of many of the key issues. The first four chapters are the most poorly written with unexplained examples and difficult to follow diagrams. Some of the latter chapters are a bit better written. The book, moreover, gives a very poor explanation of pricing techniques which should have formed the core of this text. ON the whole, i would not recommend it to anyone who wants to gain a good introduction to this topic.

Review of "RFID Strategic ...".......2006-11-12
The delivery was prompt and the book arrived in good condition.
The use of this reading.......2006-06-22
...Great overview for anyone looking to understand the excitement behind RFID. A solid presentation of case material to understand the real business value of RFID.
RFID info for you or your company.......2006-06-15
I found the organization of information just right for anyone looking to get a good foundation and practical information about the emerging RFID technology. The introduction was well done and easy to understand from a layman's view. The authors provided a clear and accurate overview of where the technology started, moved to, and is positioning for in the future. The examples used and the case studies provided, all combined to whet the reader's appetite for more information about RFID. The easy reading style, and the balance of ideas, make this not a technical book that turns off the non-technical person but one that encourages further exploration. If you are looking at a career in RFID technology or getting your company positioned to take advantage of the potential of the technology, start with this book.
Solid overview of RFID technology........2006-03-21
As a systems integration architect I see RFID playing an ever-increasing role in data capture and information management. However it has been difficult to find objective, fact based, information on RFID. Most books that deal with the subject, focus solely on the physics. This book provided me with a good broad overview of where and how RFID is being used, the challenges as well as the opportunities involved in deployment and the various issues involved in adoption of RFID for a business. I would highly recommend this book for anyone seeking a good understanding of the business value of RFID.

Too simplified and sometimes inaccurate.......2003-08-14
Being interested in geology and a native of North Carolina, I was initially excited about "The Years Before Man". But, like the previous reviewer said, too much information is crammed into this relatively short book -- the entire geologic history of NC is too complicated to be confined to ~200 pages. The result is a watered-down geologic history of NC, some of which is outdated and inaccurate.
On the other hand, Fred Beyer has written an easy-to-read book on a subject that isn't always easy to understand. For someone with a casual interest in geology, "The Years Before Man" is an excellent start to understanding the complex geologic history of NC. Otherwise, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.
Interesting but limited.......2000-05-29
The author attempts to cover a billion + of geology and paleontology in a very modest-sized book. The result is that both are treated on a very superficial level. It compares especially unfavorably with the new Geology of Pennsylvania (`600 pages) that sells for only $20...

Book Description
For fans of James Bond movies, Tom Clancy, John Le Carré and Robert Ludlum,
Hidden Secrets is a compelling look at the real world of the spy. Often called the second oldest profession, espionage has played and continues to play a pivotal role in world events. Stealing plans, knowing an enemy's capabilities and deceiving an opponent are vital in both war and peacetime. Centuries ago, Sun Tzu (The Art of War) made extensive use of spies and believed the ideal way to defeat an opponent was to avoid battle altogether with deception and clever maneuvers to confuse, distract and ultimately triumph over the enemy. In 1780, George Washington's spies, the Culper Ring spy network, tracked enemy ships by communicating with invisible inks and signals like hanging a set number of handkerchiefs on a clothesline.
Spying and spy technology has evolved from sending signals through handkerchiefs and cracking the code of the Enigma machine to current intelligence techniques that rely on satellite imagery and monitoring of cellphone and internet communications. With case studies and hundreds of photographs,
Hidden Secrets is an intriguing look at all these surveillance techniques, spy technology and the spies themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Not at all what I hoped for.......2004-10-04
I am extremely disappointed in this book. I was expecting something very thorough and in-depth, given the subtitle "a complete history." Instead, this is a slim volume written at about the level of complexity you'd expect from one of those Reader's Digest compilations. There are tons and tons and tons of pictures and varying typefaces, as if the editors were desperate to give people something to look at besides the words; as a result, the pages are so cluttered as to not make for easy reading or easy picture viewing. This book can be considered complete in its breadth, which is considerable, but not in its depth, which is at about the level of a high-school reader. I almost expected discussion questions at the end of each chapter. There are some very engaging anecdotes -- but I had read the majority of them elsewhere before. In short, there's nothing here that you can't find presented with more clarity elsewhere. I regret the purchase and will be taking this to a used bookshop to at least try and get some value on trade-in.
Fun, Exciting, Read.......2003-04-22
Hidden secrets is not the type of book that one will study for hours upon hours however, it is most likely one of the most interesting books that I have read in the past year or so. Hidden Secrets is a brief overview of all areas of espionage, from electronic surveillance, to deception campaigns. Especially fun are the short case studies presented. This book can be read quickly and is most definitely for somebody seeking enjoyment of their time and not for espionage study.
If you desire a short, fun read for a boring event such as a long plane ride haul along Hidden secrets.
A focus on the changing espionage technologies.......2002-07-07
Other titles have provided a history of espionage or specific agents: Hidden Secrets combines a focus on the changing technologies used to support espionage, examining the real world of the spy and using color illustrations, photos, and abundant side-bars of information to explain differences between historical and modern spying. Absorbing and revealing.
Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2006-04-26
This is an excellent book. It's a fast read, but always gripping, and the author's interpretation of events, as an "insider's insider," is always interesting.
If you read just the first chapter, you'll recognize that the author "predicted" (for lack of a better word) the world's current major conflicts, most notably, the conflict between radical Islam/terrorism and the West (what the author refers to as a South-North war, a/k/a the Fourth World War -- with the East-West Cold War being the Third World War).
Today is 2006. This book was published in 1992. Not too shabby of an assessment, huh?
Well, you can ogle Tom Friedman and read Francis Fukuyama ("End of History") all you want. Or, you can read a book such as this by Marenches, and decide for yourself your own worldview. Are you a realist/pragmatist? Or are you an idealist?
[Note that Fukuyama's book/thesis and de Marenches' book were both published at relatively the same time, i.e., end of the Cold War -- read both books and draw your own conclusions about "what the world is all about." In my humble opinion, Fukuyama's thesis was based purely on ideals, not a reflection of observable facts, which explains why his theory and predictions have zero basis in fact and are completely off track].
Below is the book review on Amazon.com from Kirkus Reviews when the book was published in 1992. DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS.
"A curious but compelling account by Count de Marenches, for 11 years (1970-81) the head of the French intelligence service, and Andelman, longtime Paris correspondent for The New York Times and CBS News. Though de Marenches claims that ``the Fourth World War has already begun''--a war, waged by ``small, highly deadly units of terrorists,'' that has ``the very real prospect of ending civilization, at least Western civilization, as we know it'' -- there's very little information here to back this claim. Equally odd is his treatment of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, for he asserts that the Russians still harbor dreams of world domination and that conservative Communists have put aside billions of dollars to continue their secret war."
Defines the current threat........2005-01-18
As much an autobiography as a text on the sequel to the Cold War, Count de Marenches' The Fourth World War: Diplomacy and Espionage in the Age of Terrorism underscores the theory that efficacious intelligence addresses current problems of criminal insurgency including acts of terrorism, asymmetric warfare, and low intensity conflict and suggests possible solutions. It introduces the notion that the Cold War, an East-West conflict has been transformed into a South-North War fueled by the `pressures of population, hunger, disparate religious beliefs, historic prejudices, and hatreds' that results in criminal insurgency. Consequently, a new paradigm (Certain Destruction as opposed to Mutually Assured Destruction) may be developed that could assist practitioners and academics alike in analyzing, solving and managing the threat. By shifting the perspective for both military and civilian forces from their traditionally reactive stance, to a proactive posture, and merging national security with homeland defense on the most perplexing issues and threats facing U.S. security, this work may provide a base upon which new and actionable policies can be designed.
As a career intelligence officer and former head of the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure, Count de Marenches perceptively warns that public administrators take seriously the lessons from past failures. The single most important supposition being, sound policy is reliant upon good intelligence. "We have many weaknesses that terrorist organizations, through their flexibility, are repeatedly able to exploit. One key weakness is that we continue to think of defense fundamentally in national terms, whereas terrorism operates in an international or global context, moving at will across frontiers, choosing targets carefully where opportunity presents itself rather than for any specific nationalist end." P. 199.
Very Interesting Book.......2002-04-07
Very interesting book years ahead in talking about the troubles we now face. I would assume this would be brought back out given the state of the war on terrorism. Ok so he does not have a boatload of facts, but that was in 1992 - look at what has happened over the past 10 years. He comments were right on. There are lost of interesting stories from Africa to Europe and central Asia. This book provides a look into the French intelligence agency that for me a new given that most books in the area deal with the CIA, MI5 or the KGB. If you read this book you will be talking about it to your friends for weeks after you have finished it. The book is written well and keeps moving, it does not get bogged down in "the French are the best" hyperbole.
