Most books that predict a sky-high stock market make their forecast either by extrapolating the trend line of the market's recent past or by looking at the demographics of the baby boom and the vast amounts of retirement funds chasing stocks. In Dow 36,000, James Glassman and Kevin Hassett see a bright future for stocks, but rather than looking at external factors, the two base their prediction on the intrinsic value of equities and their ability to generate cash.

At the heart of Glassman and Hassett's argument is the idea that stocks have been undervalued for decades and that, for the next few years, investors can expect a dramatic one-time upward adjustment in stock prices. Why? While Wall Street has focused on valuation measures such as P/E ratios, it has virtually ignored how stocks can work as cash engines (the good ones, at least). The authors cite example after example of the growth in dividend income for stocks and how it has consistently beaten the annual payouts of long-term Treasury bonds. One example they cite is Exxon, which you could have bought in 1977 for about $6 when it was paying a dividend of 37 cents, or about 6 percent a share. Twenty years later, the dividend had grown to $1.63 or 27 percent of your initial $6 investment. Compare two $1,000 investments over 20 years in Exxon and 7.5 percent Treasury bonds: payments from the T-bonds would amount to $1,500; the Exxon dividends would add up to $3,585--not to mention that shares in Exxon went from $6 to $61 during that same period. To get to their target of 36,000, the authors project dividend growth of the 30 stocks that make up the Dow and apply a valuation measure that they call PRP ("perfectly reasonable price"). Many will dismiss this kind of thinking as wishful, but they're probably the same Chicken Littles who have been calling the market overpriced for years (think back to January 1993, when the Dow was hovering around 3,300).

In addition to making their case for undervalued stocks, the authors toss off some good investment advice about stock picking, portfolio allocation, and buying mutual funds, and they go to great pains not to bulldoze readers with investing and economic jargon. As you might expect, Glassman, an investing columnist for the Washington Post, and Hassett, a former senior economist with the Federal Reserve, are firmly in the buy-and-hold camp, and make the case for working with a full-service broker as a check against churning, something that's all too easy to do when trading over the Internet. This book is sure to rile some, but no matter where you think stock prices are headed, Dow 36,000 is a provocative read that belongs on the bookshelf of any thoughtful investor. Who knows? We may come to think of these guys as value investors on steroids. --Harry C. Edwards

1 out of 5 stars Worthless Gilder-Laffer-Wanniski supplyside nonsense.......2005-09-07

The major prediction made by Glassman and Hassett in this book, written in 1999,was that"A sensible target date for Dow 36,000 is early 2005,but it could be reached much earlier"(1999,p.140).This fantastic science fiction forecast, like the similar 1999 fiction forecasts of Abby Joseph Cohen, Elias(1999)and Kadlec(1999),was mathematically and economically impossible since the single best predictor of future stock market values is the rate of growth in gdp(gross domestic product). To obtain a Dow of 36,000 by 2005 at the latest would have required continuous quarterly gdp growth rates of 7%-8% from 1999 through 2005.Starting in late 1999(Sept.,1999) through March,2000,the 3 wisemen,Warren Buffett,George Soros, and Peter Lynch, liquidated all of the stocks in their portfolios and exited the market. They transferred their cash to other assets.Unfortunately, far too many financial investors failed to follow them out of all of the stock markets and ended up losing about 8 trillion dollars. The best long treatment of stock market behavior is the 3
rd edition of C.P.Kindleberger's Manias,Panics, and Crashes(1996).His major point was that you automatically have a bubble once you start hearing claims that there is a new economy that represents a complete break with all past market fundamentals. This was precisely the claim made by Gilder,Laffer,Wanniski,Glassman and Hassett,Elias,Kadlec, etc. Paul Samuelson's 1996 prediction-"Sometime in the next five years you may kick yourself for not reading and re-reading Kindleberger's Manias,Panics, and Crashes"-hit the nail on the head. The best short treatment is still chapter 12 of John Maynard Keynes's 1936 The General Theory of Employment,Interest and Money.

1 out of 5 stars Absurd.......2005-04-28

James Glassman should apologize for his stupidity, his arrogance, and this book, which lured in a whole lot of amateur investors just as the stock market was about to go bust.

2 out of 5 stars Paradigm Shifting? Not Yet........2004-01-16

The Dow 36,000 Theory is all about predicting a paradigm shift in current investors' perceptions. Tomorrow's investors are expected to forsake the old paradigm and embrace a new one. Authors James K. Glassman and Kevin A. Hassett present the "discounted dividend" model of the stock market as their reason why stock prices will soar, eventually. In 1999, they said it could happen anytime but put a window on it of 3-5 years. Hasn't happened yet. But this book is important as a look-see into how academic constructs originate and work their way into "commonly accepted stock market wisdom." The P/E was once a kernel of an idea in someone's head. Now, it's the basic way to value stocks. So, conceptions do change over time.
Dividends, say Glassman and Hassett, whether paid out quarterly or totally retained in the company, are the only important way to determine a company's true worth. They call it the PRP (perfectly reasonable price).
To justify lofty expectations, the words "assume" and "assumption" are used dozens of times and lie at the bottom of what, so far, is wrong with this concept. Just because they calculate something as being worth many times what it's selling for today doesn't mean prices will skyrocket tomorrow. It requires acknowledgement and action by investors. We're back to the old high school conundrum of whether a tree makes any noise if it falls in a forest without anybody hearing it. It this case, the question is whether a stock will ever sell at its "true value" if nobody ever bids the price up that far? Obviously not.
Their credo, "Buy anytime, hold forever," as well as the recommended use of index funds is a recipe for never having to admit you're wrong regardless of what happens to your investment account. You never have to confront performance because that far away goal just hasn't been reached yet. Continue to hold. It's an enviable position, if you can get people to take you seriously. But Dow 36,000...is it possible? Sure, anything is possible if the paradigm shifts. It's shifted before and will shift again. The trouble with paradigm shifts is like Greenspan's recognition of a bubble. You won't know about it until it's already happened...and then it's too late,,,

1 out of 5 stars waiting ............2002-11-08

As an addendum to my previous review, where I wrote that one reason I got out of the market was this book, let me add that before I get back into the market I'm waiting for "Dow 36" by Glassman and Hassett.

1 out of 5 stars Authors that later lie about their message........2002-11-07

This book was one of the reasons I got completely out of the stock market in late '99 early 2000. When I read this pustulous piece of putrescent puffery I just knew I had to get out. THANK YOU KEVIN AND JAMES!!!!!

I come to write this review because just for a lark I thought I'd search the internet for Glassman, see what he's pushing today, so I can get out of it for my own safety.

In writing this review I treat the authors' late-90s media appearances and book-related articles all as one whole.

Hassett and Glassman are out there now (Nov 2002) writing (paraphrased) "we never wrote the DOW would be at 36000 soon".

I read the book in fact in winter 99/00 along with some of their articles, and did catch a few of their TV appearances. They definitely did write either in the book or one of the accompanying pieces (Washington Post or The Atlantic) that stocks are in a 'one-time surge' and everyone must GET IN NOW.

Their media appearances were even worse...

"GET IN NOW!!!
DON'T MISS THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY!!!!
YOU'RE FOOLS IF YOU DON'T
MORTGAGE YOUR HOUSE TO BUY STOCK!!"

They used to remind me of that Joe Piscopo SNL salesman character (you remember, the frenzied salesman, "WE MUST BE INSANE!!! OUR PRICES ARE SO LOW WE'LL GO OUT OF BUSINESS YESTERDAY!!!!").

And they are completely unrepentant. I just read a Glassman article (Wash Post - why the ...are they still giving this unrepentant, lying moron/clown a stage?) claiming he was right all along and 36000 is STILL the DOW's fair value. Claiming that Siegel's research supported G&H's conclusions (Siegel, who currently seems bullish said they misconstrued his research. Interesting word, misconstued - is Siegel saying G&H are liars, idiots, or some combination thereof?). Claiming that all investors everywhere should still be fully invested in the stock market for the long term.

Something a lot of the other reviews are not pointing out is that G&H had ideological motives for pushing stocks (Glassman was once publisher of a right wing magazine, I forget which one). Both G&H were[1] republicans and both felt that the more people own stock the more conservative they become, in an attempt to protect their assets.

[1] I don't know their current predilictions.

      Book Description

Financial crises have dogged the international monetary system over recent years. They have impoverished millions of people around the world, especially within developing countries. And they have called into question the very process of globalization. Yet there remains no intellectual consensus on how best to avert such crises, much less resolve them. Policymakers stand at a cross-roads.

This volume summarizes and evaluates these issues, drawing on contributions by prominent international experts in the field. It considers whether the IMF may have actually fanned the flames of future crises through its lending decisions. It assesses the contribution made by private creditors in resolving past crises - and asks what mechanisms might best be used to involve private creditors in the future. It also assesses the merits of two recent competing blueprints for architectural reform - the so-called contractual and statutory approaches to crisis resolution. These issues will shape the debate on the future of the international monetary system over the next decade and, probably, beyond. For although crises may always be with us, better public policy can surely help mitigate their future cost and incidence.

With an impressive array of internationally based contributors, this book will deserve a place on the bookshelves of any self-respecting economist, financial adviser or banking institution.

        Book Description

It has been an ancient and tenacious human hope that mankind could apply to the no man's land between states the experience of domestic law in curbing violence and settling disputes. Within a society, the use of law to resolve disputes and contain violence centers in the courts and the police. Men anxious to restrain international aggression and settle international disputes peaceably have long sought to invoke international policing and adjudication under law. Twice within the past half-century, they have undertaken to build worldwide organizations to keep the peace. The United Nations system assigns a critical role to adjudication under the Charter and international law.

In this book, one of America's foremost legal scholars, who has extensive experience in foreign policy, administration, and international law, explores whether and to what extent decisions by international tribunals have been significant, or may yet be significant, for the settlement of international disputes. Mr. Katz believes that adjudication as an institution ranks among the great creative achievements of mankind, but it has its limitations--limits both in current practice and in its potential scope.

In presenting his argument; Mr. Katz concentrates upon the period since the end of World War II and deals primarily with international conflict within the experience of the United Nations and the International Court of Justice. He focuses on disputes resulting from the Cold War and on those between established industrial states and newly emerging states or peoples that have not yet attained a full measure of self-government.

In examining what happened and appraising what might have happened; Mr. Katz keeps the reader constantly aware of the many meanings of law; and of the need to sort out the different meanings in order to apply law effectively. Without an understanding of the effective reach and the limits of adjudication; he insists; we will waste opportunities for settling international controversies. We can waste opportunities by failing to use international tribunals where they can be effective; we can dissipate the precious resource of adjudication in wishful misapplications; and in misapplying adjudication; we can divert our attention from other ways and means more pertinent to the settlement of particular international disputes.

                    Book Description

Great effort has been undertaken to investigate potential geohazards in relation to the development of the Ormen Lange gas field offshore Mid-Norway.

The field is located in the scar left after the giant, tsunami-generating Storegga Slide, which occurred roughly 8200 years ago, and the slide risk has consequently received particular focus. The studies have been multi-disciplinary in character, and have involved a number of companies, universities, and research institutions. The results of the project led to a significant advance in the understanding of the Storegga Slide in particular, and submarine slope instability in general, and played an important role in the approval of field development by Norwegian authorities.

This book comprises 26 individual contributions representing the wide span of topics addressed in the project. The main scope is to provide a state-of-the-art report on geohazard investigations in a high latitude continental margin setting. Most of the data and results published in this book would not have reached beyond the confidential report stage unless the license partners of the Ormen Lange license had agreed that this information deserves a wider audience.

                    * Multidisciplinary and covers most themes treated in slope stability studies prior to the field development phase
                    * Provides a link between basic research and applied geohazard studies, with direct relevance for risk evaluation in relation to field development activities, such as pipeline design, drilling of wells, structure foundation etc.
                    * A state-of-the-art report on geohazard investigations in a high latitude continental margin setting in relation to field development activities

                            Book Description

CONFESSIONS is a collection of stories from a practical joker that plays up the `Ol' Country Boy' routine mainly for the benefit of the tourists. Many of the local people will identify with the players in these comedies and philosophical stories, as Motz is a practical joker and has been known to instigate many a misunderstanding, or to feign innocence to initiate a comic and embarrassing situation.

An innocent in a world of hunters, fishermen and other liars, Motz goes out of his way to make you laugh, sometimes at his expense and often at the expense of others, who try to show how sophisticated they are.

His first story about going hunting for raccoons and the misunderstandings which can occur is classic.

For many years, Motz was a newspaper columnist and his humor is sometimes sarcastic, sometimes banal, sometimes self-edifying, sometimes quixotic, but never has it been dull. In many of the stories, morality suffers on the surface, only to emerge in some twisted and perverse manner later on. The often wry or cutting humor will make you read with concentration, for fear of missing some hidden fact or quirky twist of fate. You will laugh at times and you will just shake your head at others, but you will not find these observations and stories boring. And when you finally put this book down, you will reflect many times later on about how a single misunderstanding or double meaning can change a single story or single life. You will also have a deeper appreciation of the humor of a modern rural America, the world of the author.

Memories of a Norfolk childhood in the 1950s by one of Norfolk's best-known humorists and broadcasters. 36 separate pieces, three for each month of the year. Affectionate and funny, the writing offers a sharp-eyed and unsentimental view of post-war life in Norfolk in particular, and the country in general, in 1950s England.

As Keith Skipper says: "Distance may lend enchantment, but my country childhood has inspired much more than rampant nostalgia. I relish every chance to extol the virtues of a golden age when...life was quieter, slower, simpler...."

                              Book Description

Tiger Force was an experiment, a group of specially selected soldiers from the Armys 101st Airborne Division whose main objective was to find the enemy in the jungles of Vietnam and call in air strikes. But it was an experiment that went horrifically wrong. During a seven-month rampage in 1967, members of Tiger Force went over the edge and into the abyss. They murdered innocent civilians, and spun dangerously out of control. Their victims ranged from old farmers to newborns, and were so numerous that the soldiers sometimes did not even bother to count the corpses. If the Devil had a unit, these were his men. And then their crimes were covered up. Told from the viewpoints of the soldiers who tried to resist this descent into hell, and those who did not, and including accounts from Vietnamese who witnessed the Tiger Forces rampages, this is history at its most harrowing. It is also the astonishing story of how these events, buried by the Army for decades, came to light at last through the heroic persistence of a few individuals who could not forget.

When we review what we read shows what War creates for the Poor and Middle class that are sent to fight it. Our war now would require more men but they will not start a draft in fear the public demanding all should go, no exemptions which would mean some of their families. Remember as you start to admonish these men they were trained to be killers by our country, then by the highest military command left in situations of combat extension that should never been and then left longer. Did they snap, sure they did. why is the Army still covering up? They do not want the high command to be exposed that they caused this problem with their incessant kill number. How about Westmoreland,McNamara, President Johnson, and Nixon. It is much easier to blaim what is now if still alive some drunks and drug users as if they had a choice. Well my feelings are they should be forgiven and America should take care of them. They did their distaseful job how about us now helping them.

5 out of 5 stars well research and told lesson of the U.S. Army in Vietnam.......2007-09-02

Tiger Force is an account of a seven month period in 1967, in South Viet Nam, where an experiment called Tiger Force went terribly wrong and the resulting investigation of that period in the early 1970's. Soldiers were allowed and ordered to kill hundreds of unarmed civilians they knew were not the enemy, including women, children, and the disabled. Commanders were informed, even the JAG was informed, and nothing was ever done. If anything, the Tigers blowing the whistle were threatened and punished more than the offenders. It's an indictment of a cover up by the U.S. Army and the Pentagon that has never been made right, or publicly addressed until now. The two authors who wrote the book interviewed dozens of former Tigers, the lead CID investigator, and went through several thousand pages of reports to put together a story that is easy to follow through time and on a map. The points made and moralizing are by the authors, but all the events presented were told by former Tigers themselves, either through direct interviews with Salah and Weiss or transcribed into the investigative record from old tape recorded interviews.

There have been accusations by other reviewers that can mostly be dispelled. Some believe that the errors printed about weapon models and calibers mean that the authors can't know anything about anything. Others say that it must be a pack of lies because it is full of errors like calling the unit "elite," but that is a direct quote from a former Tiger in the copious sources for each chapter in the back of the book. One reviewer is a daughter of Sargent Doyle, accused of many crimes in the book and made to look especially bad. She says the book is not factual, but the quotes from an unapologetic Doyle to the authors only corroborate everything written. These are most likely are younger reviewers, not Viet Nam veterans, who came to read the book with an idealistic version of Viet Nam history and the U.S. Army and are unwilling to believe anything different, blaming the authors for picking on the military, without reading the citations in the back and realizing it is all admitted by Tiger Force themselves. The research is sound, and I'm confident the citations will satisfy any objective reader.

From the beginning you realize the book is not an indictment of Tiger Force but a warning that unless the U.S. Army stops burying this incident, it will doubtless be the first of more books to come out in the future about similar atrocities committed in later wars. The book is a product of a generation who grew up on stories of a heroic military that defeated Hitler, won WWII, and punished similar crimes at Nuremburg, and simply could not reconcile that with what happened later in Viet Nam, and wanted to recapture the universal discipline, pride, and honor our nation once felt about the career of military service.

I am an Honorably discharged United States Viet Nam era veteran. I read this book a year ago, when it was first released. I didn't know about this avenue of book reviews on Amazon. I wish I had, because it would have been cathartic for me. It's hard to use the word "enjoy", when relating to the subject matter herein. For me, a better word might be mesmerizing. I feel it was a great book, that kept me enthralled from start to finish. This book is not for everyone. In fact, I'm still carrying inner, and some, not so inner, animosity, towards the Jane Fonda types of the world. I think a positive use of this book is not with them. Some veteran's have deep scars, and emotional wounds, that can never heal. Others have moved on, as far as leading a normal life, but privately, without it affecting, things in general, still harbor hard feelings, in the way we were treated by our own citizens. While we were in the service, and after. I plead with non-veteran readers, to understand, that the entire Viet Nam war, was not like what was portrayed in this book. It also should be noted, that many American people, including the media, and the big Hollywood stars, only real knowledge of the war, is sitting in front of their TV, with a glass of wine, and their pinkie in the air, while they watch the news. War is war! It is not pretty, and when the other side, only plays by the "rule", that there are "no" rules, many of our people, who still play by the rules, are rewarded by a free trip home in a body bag! I feel there is a great value to this book, at this place in time, for several types of people. Mothers and Fathers, of veterans, wives, sons and daughters, and loved ones, of this era of veterans, should read this book. Not to discuss, the pros and con's, of the history of the war; but to simply understand, some of the hell, that they went through. Again, not to discuss it with the veteran's in your life; but to simply learn, to have compassion and understanding, when your veteran, gets up, and walks out of the room, when some music video, shows Viet Cong, being killed, without the other side of the death equation. Or a Hollywood star, whose biggest brush with combat, was a photographer jostling them, and your veteran, smashes his fist on a coffee table, when the "star" makes anti U.S. military comments. Think about small children, carrying rifles, and with grenades strapped to their legs, trying to kill our American boys, before you so blindly criticize, the damaged souls, that were "lucky" enough to make it home!

                              1 out of 5 stars technical errors.......2007-06-13

Although I was a whopping 0 years old when the events described in this book allegedly occurred, and so cannot give a first hand account - as some reviewers allege, I know that the book is filled with TECHNICAL errors. When one has technical errors (wrong type of firearm specifications, etc), I begin to wonder about the rest of the book. If the final CID report was only about 50 pages, then why was it not re-printed in it's original form in an appendix? Although sections of this story are probably true, it is more than likely half the story. It also conveniently was published at a time when the 101st was again called into action, and thus, may serve an alternative motive.

4 out of 5 stars Unflinching look at savagery.......2007-03-18

Tiger Force is the story of a US platoon run amok in the Vietnamese countryside during the summer and fall of 1967. On a frenzied rampage of destruction, slaughter, rape and mutilation, these men mowed down seemingly everyone and everything they encountered.

The My Lai Massacre pales in comparison. We watch as apparently normal young Americans descend into barbarity, casually killing everyone in their path. It's never made clear if Tiger Force ever engaged, let alone, killed any enemy soldiers during this period.

US field commanders ignored the atrocities and encouraged more killing. No one knows the true body count. The authors' best estimate is in the hundreds.

The first half of the book is tough to get through as it recounts murder after murder of innocent civilians. The second half is devoted to the ensuing Army investigation into Tiger Force's activities. Sadly, no one was ever brought to justice for these atrocities.

This is an unsparing look at the horrors of war; it's not for the feint of heart. Highly recommended.

                                Book Description

At the outset of the Vietnam War, the Army created an experimental fighting unit that became known as "Tiger Force." The Tigers were to be made up of the cream of the crop-the very best and bravest soldiers the American military could offer. They would be given a long leash, allowed to operate in the field with less supervision. Their mission was to seek out enemy compounds and hiding places so that bombing runs could be accurately targeted. They were to go where no troops had gone, to become one with the jungle, to leave themselves behind and get deep inside the enemy's mind. The experiment went terribly wrong. What happened during the seven months Tiger Force descended into the abyss is the stuff of nightmares. Their crimes were uncountable, their madness beyond imagination-so much so that for almost four decades, the story of Tiger Force was covered up under orders that stretched all the way to the White House. Records were scrubbed, documents were destroyed, men were told to say nothing. But one person didn't follow orders. The product of years of investigative reporting, interviews around the world, and the discovery of an astonishing array of classified information, Tiger Force is a masterpiece of journalism. Winners of the Pulitzer Prize for their Tiger Force reporting, Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss have uncovered the last great secret of the Vietnam War.

It is also the story of how these crimes, buried by the army for decades, at last came to light through the heroic persistence of a few individuals who could not forget.

                                5 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2007-07-15

Undoubtedly one of the most powerful books I have ever read about the Vietnam War -- not from a political or historical perspective, but a truly human one. This is not going to be a popular book among right-wing military types, and I can already see that in some of the reactions. Unfortunately, the book has served as a forum for those who support what our nation did in Vietnam -- and those who opposed it. The authors describe the once celebrated platoon, Tiger Force, part of the 101st Airborne, and its descent into madness in 1967 in the upper areas of South Vietnam. The soldiers, in their frustration, began torturing and killing civilians. It didn't stop with one event. It went on for months and months, until the men began cutting off the ears of the dead and weaving them into necklaces. Interestingly, the authors write with great care about the soldiers -- never condemning them, but trying to show why the soldiers lost control. This book should serve as a lesson for all the reasons why we should think twice about going into wars and who -- in the end, really suffers. The Tiger Force platoon was eventually investigated for four years by the Army, but the findings were covered up by the top leaders in Washington -- until these authors broke the case wide open. The authors even reaced the original investigators. This book is a tribute to journalism -- and the authors should be commended for their efforts.

This story illustrates why we should judge people by their characters instead of the uniforms that they wear. Maybe I don't march to the same drum beat but I don't throw out the word hero very often when it comes to soldiers, policemen, firefighters or anyone who don't deserve it. The true heroes are those who risk their lives to expose the truth regardless of the consequences. As long as criminals like this get away with murder and the corrupt system abdicating its own responsibility, then many more atrocities will continue to occur i.e. Abu Gharab. I'm sure that when it's all said and done, the same story will be written about Iraq. But in the end, one will have to answer to God. Thanks to the people who attempted to stop this menace and the writers who exposed the truth. Good book.

Margaret Rossiter's widely hailed Women Scientists in America: Struggles and Strategies to 1940 marked the beginning of a pioneering effort to interpret the history of American women scientists. That effort continues in this provocative sequel that covers the crucial years of World War II and beyond. Rossiter begins by showing how the acute labor shortage brought on by the war seemed to hold out new hope for women professionals, especially in the sciences. But the public posture of welcoming women into the scientific professions masked a deep-seated opposition to change. Rossiter proves that despite frustrating obstacles created by the patriarchal structure and values of universities, government, and industry, women scientists made genuine contributions to their fields, grew in professional stature, and laid the foundation for the breakthroughs that followed 1972.
