Is this a joke?.......2002-11-28

Having actually been a CFO, I was excited to learn how I might improve on how I do things, challenge any old thinking I had picked up, etc. However, this book says nothing new. In fact, it says almost nothing at all.

PwC has assembled a collection of jargon and case studies that are so high-level as to be of no use. I give it one star instead of zero because the eCFO checklists at the end of each chapter are, in fact, useful in terms of giving you some things to think about -- but you don't need to buy the whole book just for that. Check it out at the library -- better yet, just make photocopies of the checklists.

Anything about nothing & nothing about anything!.......2002-07-15

For a real CFO, this one is actually too heavy to read through. As for the practician, although graced with beautiful charts and diagrams, it ain't provide any real beef, either. It is a sample of "anything about nothing and nothing about anything". Vague!

Highly Recommended!.......2002-05-14

The gang at PricewaterhouseCoopers discusses the chief financial officer's role in the changing corporate landscape. The eCFO is no longer only involved with financial management, but must become an internal venture capitalist, opportunity seeker and risk taker who works closely with the CEO to anticipate trends, recommend new enterprises and manage company investments as a portfolio of financial ventures. The authors draw on in-depth interviews with leading CFOs, case studies, independent research and analysis of the latest best practices. Though charts, bullets and boxes impart a textbook flavor, and the trend material is a little familiar, the book is generally solid and informative. We from getAbstract suggest it to CFOs and CEOs who need that "e" awareness, or to any manager who is trying to drag the boss into the 21st century, or even the 20th.

As its predecessor, CFO: The Architect of the Corporation's Future, eCFO continues PwC's collection of financial masterpieces.

eCFO provides a major turnaround in the finance function for the
21st century. The new CFO profile will demand a series of capabilities in order to lead companies through the e-world. Technical skills no longer suffice; CFOs are to be great visionaries and good communicators/motivators in their new leadership role.

For example, the new finance function has to take into account that budgets no longer work. They inhibit growth and creativity. I particularly liked a comment that said that budgets are an exercise of how small a company wants to be. Instead, the authors suggest using rolling forecasts as an alternative to foster creativity and at the same time control risks/costs.

I highly recommend this book. This is the third book I buy from PwC's finance team: CFO, eCFO and In Search of Shareholder Value.

e is for expanding.......2001-06-06

Although it contains more than its fair share of populist concepts and views it does provide an excellent insight into the expanding role of the CEO. Particularly useful were the comments of leading CEO's at some of the worlds most dynamic companies.

This is one of those books that is difficult to put down and it makes great reading all the way through.. Having fought in Vietnam as an infantryman in the Australian Army and now that I live much of the time in Vietnam I have found that books like "Phase Line Green" have given me a great deal of understanding as to what went on in other parts of the country, far removed from our own AO's.

These days, as I travel through places such as Hue, Lang Co and the Hai Van Pass I cannot help but reflect on what went on in those places not so long ago, thanks to this fine book which give a down to earth "Grunt's" account of one of the most notable and savage battles of the Vietnam War. Well done.

As a Marine myself. This book is an outstanding story about the retaking of the Citadel in Hue City following the TET Offensive. This book shows the reality of war. I am not a big reader, but I throughly enjoyed this book. You feel as if you are there with them. It also shows the determination of the Marines and their undying devotion to each other. That is something that will never change.

I have read many Vietnam war books, i find them very interesting and educational to read. this was the first vietnam war book i ever read, and i must say i have not read one as good yet. i've probably read about 25 vietnam war books. this is no doubt about it this was the best. it's informative, interesting, exciting, and it truly captures everything the vietnam war was known for. to me the vietnam war is not the forgotten war, atleast not to me anyways. read this book, it holds nothing back

The heartfelt message of this book not only conveys the historical narrative of the Battle of Hue but also allows the reader to visualize for himself the challenging emotional trauma endured by both Marine and Corpsman in the heat of fierce battle! I looked into the eyes of many a Marine as he breathed his last breath. All were heros! I looked into the newborn's eyes as she opened them for the first time! These are some of the feelings I relived as I read this book. I think the reader, whether a combat veteran or not, will be moved and enlightened by reading this narrative of "A Few Good Men". "Doc"

Dr. Comings tells the story of his 18 years of involvement with Tourette syndrome, from both the level of treating thousands of patients with this common and complex disorder, to his clinical, genetic and molecular genetic research. He quickly realized this was more than just a tic disorder. His patients and their relatives had problems with a wide range of behaviors including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD0, obsessive compulsive behaviors, conduct and oppositional defiant disorder, rages, mania, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, sexual, sleep, and other disorders. Because Tourette syndrome is genetic, this involvement with a spectrum of disorders had broad implications about the causes of behaviors that most mental health workers attributed to psychological problems, poor parenting, or learned behaviors. His genetic studies led him to eventually conclude that Tourette syndrome was a polygenic disorder caused by the coming together from both parents of a number of genes affecting dopamine, serotonin and other brain chemical. Dr. Comings relates how the concept that many human behavioral disorders were genetically interrelated was initially ridiculed. These attitudes began to change as other reported similar findings and as his concept gained support from molecular genetic studies of specific genes.
