The second edition contains six new chapters covering financial calculations, cost of capital, value at risk (VaR), real options, early exercise boundaries, and term structure modeling. A new technical chapter contains a potpourri of tips for using Excel®.

Although the reader should know enough about Excel™ to set up a simple spreadsheet, the author explains advanced Excel® techniques used in the book. The book includes chapters dealing with random number generation, data tables, matrix manipulation, and VBA programming. It also comes with a CD-ROM containing Excel® worksheets and solutions to end-of-chapter exercises.

Hold My Hand!.......2000-12-28

The stuff that is happening to electricity prices in both ends of the country - California and New York - is really scarey. Gas prices are also going bonkers. All this deregulation is changing the way we have bought energy for the last 60 years. I am not sure we are going in the right direction.

But this book is a calm, direct, understandable guide that will help me and probably many others to make some sense of these chaotic times and develop a plan to make the best of all the uncertainty.

The book makes sense with out being preachy or self-important. It is a complex topic, but I could follow it well.

It is definitely worthwhile for anyone concerned with buying energy for their organization, large or small.

Manual for Understanding Insurgencies.......2004-11-14

After reading Anderson's book, I felt that my knowledge about insurgency was about the equivalent of just a few pieces that were part of a big puzzle that Anderson puts together when describing the various factors motivating people to raise arms, and the common points between the various causes served by guerrilla armies in the world. Anderson lived with them; and shares his observations in his book as nothing more than a story teller and, at the end of each chapter, gives a brief analysis.

This book tells the little-known story of why a quarter-million Jews, survivors of death camps and forced labor, sought refuge in Germany after World War II. Those who had ventured to return to Poland after liberation soon found that their homeland had become a new killing ground, where some 1,500 Jews were murdered in pogroms between 1945 and 1947. Facing death at home, and with Palestine and the rest of the world largely closed to them, they looked for a place to be safe and found it in the shelter of the Allied Occupation Forces in Germany.

By 1950 a little community of 20,000 Jews remained in Germany: 8,000 native German Jews and 12,000 from Eastern Europe. Ruth Gay examines their contrasting lives in the two postwar Germanies. After the fall of Communism, the Jewish community was suddenly overwhelmed by tens of thousands of former Soviet Jews. Now there are some 100,000 Jews in Germany. The old, somewhat nostalgic life of the first postwar decades is being swept aside by radical forces from the Lubavitcher at one end to Reform and feminism at the other. What started in 1945 as a "remnant" community has become a dynamic new center of Jewish life.

A Nice Read.......2003-03-02

This short book, which details the history of post World War II Germany and the Jews could have offered more detail. It is, however, a nice overview of the subject and an easy read for anyone interested in German and/or Jewish history.

As someone who is Jewish and has traveled to Germany several times, I found many observations in this book that I can confirm from personal experience.

I enjoyed the mention of the klezmer revival in Germany, as I went to one of those concerts in Berlin a couple of years ago. I did note that the artists were young Germans, who were not Jewish. There is a lot of curiosity in Germany among young people about what was lost. The klezmer revival is part of that.

The German Jewish community today is dominated by recent immigrants from Eastern Europe.

Great Read!.......2004-07-01

This is a great little book. Tilston runs through the main arguments for being a vegetarian in a lucid and undogmatic style. He doesn't come across as a fanatic, just a sensible everyday sort of guy trying to make sense of the mass of information on the environment and health. He has clearly read a great deal of the latest research on these subjects. He deals with a few technical issues, such as land degradation and what our bodies need to run well, in clear everyday language. There is so much research these days that, as he points out, we can now draw some definitive conclusions in many areas. In areas where there are no straight answers, such as whether or not it's "right" to eat animals, he takes the reader through both sides of the argument. But perhaps the best thing about the book is that he has interspersed the arguments with his own experiences of being vegetarian, which makes it a light read of some heavy topics. And there's not a recipe to be seen.
