5 out of 5 stars The Six New Logic Principles and the Star Model........2001-01-26

"When we look around the business landscape, we see many giant corporations that were once very successful-General Motors, Westinghouse, IBM, Kmart, Digital, and Sears-trying to regain their glory days. At the same time, we see much younger corporations such as Compaq, Wal-Mart, Intel, and Microsoft competing with them and thriving. How did these successful giants of the 1960s and 1970s end up with major competitiveness problems in the 1980s and 1990s? The answer is both simple and extraordinarily complex. These once very successful corporations remained good at operating well-managed, bottom-line-oriented hierarchies, and as a result they continued to make small improvements in performance. Their fiercest competitors, on the other hand-often other U.S. companies-were, and still are, redefining the rules for business success and achieving dramatic improvements in their performance. Until recently, many of these formerly very successful companies have stubbornly clung to the old ways of doing things and refused to accept that a new era of management thinking what I call the 'new logic' of organizing-is beginning. As a result, the IBMs, Westinghouses, and Sears Roebucks of the world are behind in the race to reinvent themselves and the way they are managed" (from the Introduction).

In this context, Edward E. Lawler III firstly outlines and contrasts the most important assumptions and elements of both the traditional logic and the new logic appproach as following:

I- The Six Old Logic Principles:

1. Organization is a secondary source of competitive advantage.

2. Bureaucracy is the most effective source of control.

3. Top management and technical experts should add most of the value.

4. Hierarchical processes are the key to organizational effectiveness.

5. Organizations should be designed around functions.

6. Effective managers are the key to organizational effectiveness.

II- The Six New Logic Principles:

1. Organization can be the ultimate competitive advantage.

2. Involvement is the most effective source of control.

3. All employees must add significant value.

4. Lateral processes are the key to organizational effectiveness.

5. Organizations should be designed around products and customers.

6. Effective leadership is the key to organizational effectiveness.

Then, after introducing a new way of organizing and managing based on the new logic principles, he focuses on applying the six principles to the organizational elements in order to create a high-performance organization within the context of the Star Model-it has a pentagonal shape with a five-pointed star inside. It depicts the key features of an organization: strategy, structure, rewards, processes, and people.

Highly recommended.

    Book Description

Building an E-Business: From the Ground Up is an "e-commerce" book that moves beyond a survey atmosphere to provide hands on experience. It is designed specifically for those who want to develop web skills and business plans for use in starting an e-Buisness. This book integrates and fills the gap between "How to Design Web Pages" and Buisness and Marketing courses. It is not a "How-to" book dealing with the conversion of existing buisnesses to the electronic arena; it focuses on entrepreneurs who want to begin an eBusiness but lack basic knowledge of the Internet and in developing business and marketing plans. Building an e-Business is different because it is aimed at those interested in starting an e-Business, makes use of the Web, and assumes little or no Internet Knowledge.

              Book Description

Previously by Angelici, this laboratory manual for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate course in inorganic synthesis has for many years been the standard in the field. In this newly revised "third edition," the manual has been extensively updated to reflect new developments in inorganic chemistry. Twenty-three experiments are divided into five sections: solid state chemistry, main group chemistry, coordination chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and bioinorganic chemistry. The included experiments are safe, have been thoroughly tested to ensure reproducibility, are illustrative of modern issues in inorganic chemistry, and are capable of being performed in one or two laboratory periods of three or four hours. Because facilities vary from school to school, the authors have included a broad range of experiments to help provide a meaningful course in almost any academic setting. Each clearly written & illustrated experiment begins with an introduction that hig! hlights the theme of the experiment, often including a discussion of a particular characterization method that will be used, followed by the experimental procedure, a set of problems, a listing of suggested Independent Studies, and literature references.

A course on inorganic synthesis and reactions should involve the preparation of inorganic compounds using vacuum line, air- and moisture-exclusion, electrochemical, high-pressure and other synthetic techniques. It should investigate the kinetic and mechanistic studies of inorganic compounds.

"Synthesis and Techniques in Inorganic Chemistry" simply fulfills all the above purposes. While undergraduate chemistry usually doesn't focus on inorganic laboratory, text written with this much details is a rarity.

With 23 experiments and an appendix on techniques, this lab text covers cutting-edge research type of experiments on superconductivity, molecular sieve zeolite-X and buckminsterfullerene (C60). Organometallics is also covered with experiments on organoiron and metal carbonyl cluster. The classical coordination compounds synthesis and mechanism and vacuum line synthesis can also be found in this text.

Students can pace and select experiments from all major topic areas over the course of one semester. This is a great resource and reference for modifying existing experiments and shaping up lab techniques.

                Book Description

The microscope is a familiar tool in the biological and medical sciences, and its application to the study of plant and animal tissues is well known. That it can be applied to the study of rocks, minerals, and ceramics may come as a surprise to many people, including experienced microscopists.
The principle requirement is that a section or slice, thin enough to be transparent to transmitted light, can be prepared. This is a practical guide to the preparation of thin sections. All that is needed are some simple equipment, a modicum of manual dexterity, and a measure of patience. Above
all, thin sections can be made without expensive machinery, although a brief account of mechanical aids is included here. Methods of making polished sections for reflected light microscopy, staining sections, making peels, and extracting heavy mineral suites from sands are covered in later chapters.
The book will appreciated as a handy laboratory guide by geologists, earth scientists, materials scientists, ceramicists, and microscopists.

                  Book Description

Studying the dynamics of a large number of particles interacting through long-range forces, commonly referred to as the "N-body problem", is a central aspect of many different branches of physics. In recent years, physicists have made significant advances in the development of fast N-body algorithms to deal efficiently with such complex problems. This book gives a thorough introduction to these so-called "tree methods", setting out the basic principles and giving many practical examples of their use. The authors assume no prior specialist knowledge, and they illustrate the techniques throughout with reference to a broad range of applications. The book will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers working on the modeling of systems in astrophysics, plasma physics, nuclear and particle physics, condensed matter physics and materials science.

The year is 1983. Beautiful progressive people lead fast-track lifestyles in Manhattan. Seeking happiness and status and meaning through jobs and fashion and political identity. But not Henry Willoughby. His is a world of petty coworkers and cheap office parties. Ex-hippie success gurus and millionaire cookie barons. Marxist revolutionaries and Ayn Rand cultists. Nightmarish job interviews and hellish subway rides. Henry belongs to the nameless and the faceless. The secretaries and clerks and losers leading lives of quiet desperation in a little gray cubicle in yuppie hell.

In the tradition of Bonfire Of The Vanities, Clockwatchers, and Dilbert.

4 out of 5 stars Sarah Burney for the Carolina Review.......2003-06-27

[The below review is by Sarah Burney and originally appeared in the Carolina Review, December 2001, a publication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Reprinted in its entirety by permission.]

What will life be like after graduation? How will you prepare for that big job interview? What is the difference between a charcoal gray suit and a gunmetal gray suit, and why does it matter?

Manhattan Sharks, a new novel by Thomas M. Sipos, answers these questions and more in a satirical look at careers and daily life in 1983 in New York City.

It is hard to summarize the plot of Manhattan Sharks, since there does not appear to be one upon cursory examination. Dig deeper, however, and it is not just a story of job hunting and corporate ladder climbing. It is a story of friendship, romance, and the search for the perfect résumé.

Cathy C. Calery, of the Cathy C. Calery Career Counseling Center, is a woman driven to be the best in her field. She faces stiff competition in the form of Simon Seltzer and the Seltzer Agency, which is better funded, connected, and respected than the Sextuple C.

Cathy enlists the aid of TVR, a company that does ratings research as well as produces commercials, to air an advertisement on Letterman to attract clients in her key demographic. Kyle Klifton handles her account, and eventually falls for Cathy despite his distaste for her liberal politics. He is attracted to her beauty and brains, she is attracted to his power suit and power tie. It is strange how yuppies can turn even relationships into business.

Meanwhile, recent junior-college graduates Russell Rusche, Rupert Rusche, Patrick Patterson, and Henry Willoughby navigate the treacherous world of job interviews, office politics, and twice-daily subway rides. The subway is described in nauseating detail, from the first cramped seconds to the final, sweaty rush to freedom. Sipos's description of the sights, sounds, and smells of the borough of Manhattan is no less loving, and could only have come from a native New Yorker. The mention of the now-fallen World Trade Center towers causes a pang of nostalgia, as do the mentions of Reagan before the Alzheimer's took hold.

Henry Willoughby is the standout of the recent graduates. He lands a job with TVR as a number cruncher in the ratings department, though what he really wants to do is direct. A meek, mild man with a sensitive digestive system, Henry spends his days flirting unsuccessfully with Sheila the secretary, trying to avoid his loud, abrasive co-worker Better, carefully planning ways to get the best snacks from the office kitchen, and analyzing Nielsen and Arbitron ratings that come from binders of varying size and thickness. Henry seems almost Dilbert-like in manner, though to Sipos's credit, Manhattan Sharks was first conceived in 1987, well before Dilbert became popular.

Sipos tells the story in vignettes, and it is sometimes hard to follow where he leads. Nevertheless, the reader quickly adjusts to the somewhat choppy narrative style and becomes engrossed in the stories. The characters are sometimes tough to like, especially when Cathy Calery indulges in that favorite activity of the left, Reagan bashing, but they are always realistic and believable.

Almost all of the names in Manhattan Sharks are alliterative, Henry Willoughby being the only exception. It is a rather irritating incongruity, and it makes the novel seem almost cartoonish at times. Perhaps the author's purpose in using this device was to draw the reader's attention to how different Henry is from the rest of the characters. He is not smartly dressed, overly ambitious, or a relentless social climber; in short, he is not a jerk. The reader therefore identifies and sympathizes with him.

Manhattan Sharks is not an instant classic. It was written to be funny and entertaining, and Sipos accomplishes that purpose admirably. His on-target skewering of Donahue and gun control lobbyists is hilarious...Phil Donahue and the gun control set are not the only sacred cows Sipos leads to the slaughter. Neither communist revolutionaries, nor Woodstock-era hippies, nor gold-digging yuppie women are safe from Sipos's biting satire.

Many UNC seniors will be able to relate to the trials and travails of the characters all too soon, as they graduate from this respected university and enter the real world. The stress of job interviews, the drudgery of office work, and the treacherous world of romance and politics will unfortunately become all too familiar in the coming months. But take heart, seniors -- it could be much worse. At least you will not be in college anymore, and the 80s are long past.

                  Book Description

Colin S. Gray has advised governments on both sides of the Atlantic about military affairs, and he looks into the future to provide some intriguing answers about the ways Western armed forces—which have traditionally been trained to fight conventional, not guerrilla, warfare—may have to evolve.

ANOTHER BLOODY CENTURY: FUTURE WARFARE explores the idea that while war is ever changing, its basics remain the same: it'll always be with us, it has an unchanging nature and character, it's driven by politics, and it embraces strategic surprises. That said, ANOTHER BLOODY CENTURY narrows the focus to strategic prediction's problems, the fallacies inherent in the idea of a foreseeable future when warfare is involved, and futuristic types of warfare mechanisms which argues that in practice war is a controlled process. Any who would understand warfare's evolution and future must consider the basic tenants observed in ANOTHER BLOODY CENTURY: FUTURE WARFARE, which looks under the hype for the realities.

4 out of 5 stars Fine study of warfare.......2006-05-23

In this fascinating book, Colin Gray, Professor of International Politics and Strategic Studies at Reading University, continues the argument of his classic `Modern Strategy' - Clausewitz still rules. "Technology is important, but in war and strategy people matter most." There is no golden key to military success.

His argument is that war and warfare will always be with us. War has an unchanging nature but a variable character, so history is our best guide to the future. Irregular warfare between states and non-state foes may be the dominant form of warfare for some years, but interstate war, including great power conflict, is not over. The political context is the main driver of war's incidence and character. Above all, warfare is political, though also social and cultural. Surprise in future warfare is certain. Efforts to regulate war by international political, legal and moral measures and attitudes are worth pursuing; however, perceived belligerent necessity can always trump them.

His particular conclusions are unconventional but well argued: "the less active we are in attempting to speed reform in the Islamic world, the better. Such reform is the only comprehensively effective answer to Al Qaeda, but it cannot be imposed from outside." "Terrorism will neither vanish nor be comprehensively defeated (technically an impossibility, since it is a mode of warfare), but it may resume its more usual position as a permanent background danger, typically of much lesser gravity than interstate war." "nuclear weapons are useful. If they are not useful, why do the declared nuclear weapon states continue to hold them and why do others aspire to join their ranks? It so happens that biological, chemical, and radiological weapons also can be useful. The phenomenon that impedes comprehension and strategic empathy amounts to nothing less than demonization."

However, in contrast to these realistic judgements, he espouses the idealist notion that the US state is the prime defender of `world order', a notion that whitewashes all those illegal US aggressions to enforce selfish US interests. So he joins Bush and Blair in opposing `efforts to regulate war' - "we need to be careful lest an ill-advised and undue respect for UN rules and procedures is permitted fatally to obstruct the forces of order, which is to say principally the United States."

Bush and Blair see themselves as the sheriff and deputy of `world order', but why share their delusion?

                    Book Description

Originally published in 1990, the first edition of Subset Selection in Regression filled a significant gap in the literature, and its critical and popular success has continued for more than a decade. Thoroughly revised to reflect progress in theory, methods, and computing power, the second edition promises to continue that tradition. The author has thoroughly updated each chapter, incorporated new material on recent developments, and included more examples and references. New in the Second Edition: · A separate chapter on Bayesian methods · Complete revision of the chapter on estimation · A major example from the field of near infrared spectroscopy · More emphasis on cross-validation · Greater focus on bootstrapping · Stochastic algorithms for finding good subsets from large numbers of predictors when an exhaustive search is not feasible · Software available on the Internet for implementing many of the algorithms presented · More examples Subset Selection in Regression, Second Edition remains dedicated to the techniques for fitting and choosing models that are linear in their parameters and to understanding and correcting the bias introduced by selecting a model that fits only slightly better than others. The presentation is clear, concise, and belongs on the shelf of anyone researching, using, or teaching subset selecting techniques.

                    3 out of 5 stars A prehistoric dinosaur.......2005-05-07

The preface in the second edition begins by asking what progress has been made in the field of subset selection since 1990 and then answering this question by saying very little if any.

I think this pretty much conveys the message of the book. There's a whole section on least-squares (chapter 1), another section on subset selection using standard selection algorithms (chapter 2), another section on hyptothesis testing (chapter 3) and then much discussion about when to stop fitting using methods that all look suspiciously like Cp (chapter 4). Most, if not, all of this material is standard and has been superseeded by vastly improved methodology. There is no discussion regarding maching learning methods. Only in the preface does Miller mention "bagging", noting that that it might be similar to Bayesian model averaging, but that unfortunately he became aware of this method too late to include in the
                    textbook.

The only saving grace for this book is Section 7 where he discusses some potentially new methods introduced by Bayesians. Even here his discussion is outdated.

Overall a prehistoric dinosaur covering mostly obsolete ideas
and methods. Save your money and wait for a better book.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book you must own.......2002-04-30

There's a revolution of sorts in statistical modeling in recent years, first from recognizing the effects of model selection bias on inference and prediction, then from the impetus of boosting and then bagging from cs, statistical modeling is probably not the same since. The earlier version of book (1990) was the first book discussing why practioners involving modeling with many variables need to pay attention to some of the deep issues. The present updated edition incorporates some of the recent developments in last 10 years, noticeably, penalized likelihood type methods, Bayesian method, and bagging type procedure. I believe there will be more exciting developments in this area, including the Bayesian approach, which may offer the ultimate hope of providing valid inference and prediction procedure. In all, the second edition of this book provides a golden opportunity for researchers who haven't already own it to buy and to read and to enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Best Available But Difficult to Read.......1999-04-06

This book describes techniques for finding good predictors of some phenomenon (assuming linear dependence). For example, suppose you want to know what factor determine IQ. You do a survey that includes 500 factors such as "family income", "length of hair", "father's IQ", etc. Now determine which are the 20 best determinants of IQ! Thats impossible (practically speaking) because you'd have to do an exhaustive search of 500 choose 20 variables which would take to much computing power. The book describes known techniques which identify factors that are good predictors (but not necessarily the best).

In my searches, I found this book to be the best available on the subject. I found it difficult to read -- it is math heavy with emphasis on linear algebra.

The author is certainly one of the most authoritative subject matter experts. He supports free fortran source code which are available on his WEB site. He also maintains software (for MATHLAB I think) which use the techniques.

I would like the book to be targetted at three levels of audiences (I know - I want to world!). The book should include the math - for the theoretician. The book should be organized so persons not interested in the theory can figure out what the techiques do (at a high level). Finally, the book should identify which methods are supported by the major commerical statistical packages (e.g., SPSS, MATLAB, etc).
