    Book Description

This is the third book of selected papers on environmental management accounting (EMA) which has been developed by the Environmental Management Accounting Network - Europe (EMAN–Eu), drawn primarily from papers presented at EMAN-Eu conferences, to bring together several examples of leading thinking and practice internationally in this rapidly developing area. The authors include academics and practitioners from industry and the subjects covered range from individual company experiences with implementing EMA to national experiences regarding the adoption and diffusion of EMA practices. The papers included in the book provide several examples of how EMA can be applied in practice both in large corporations and in small and medium-sized enterprises, and of various tools and techniques applied in this process. The book is intended for all those interested in EMA as either researchers or practitioners. It will also be of interest both to those interested in how well-established management accounting methods can be adapted and extended in order to meet new demands on companies, and also to environmental managers interested in learning how accounting techniques can be of value in achieving environmental management objectives.

    Book Description

"Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM)" is one of the major topics in application-oriented Supply Chain Management. However, many solutions lack conceptual precision and currently available client-server SCEM-systems are ill-suited for complex supply networks in today's business environment. Agent-based proactive information logistics promises to overcome existing deficits by providing event-related information to all participants in the distributed environment. Hence, follow-up costs of disruptive events are significantly reduced for all network participants and performance of a supply network is increased. In this book a thorough analysis of the event management problem domain is the starting point to develop a generic agent-based approach to Supply Network Event Management. The main focus lies on practical issues of event management (e.g. semantic interoperability) and economic benefits to be achieved with agent technology in this state-of-the-art problem domain.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Theoretical Approach.......2006-06-13

It should come as no surprise to anyone in business that ripples in the supply chain can grow to tidal waves before they reach the bottom line. One example: an 18 strike at a brake supplier stopped production in 26 General Motors plants. Today everyone wants to minimize inventory, going to some form of Just-In-Time (JIT) delivery of components. This means that the potential for greater disruption of the manufacturing process grows with the shortness of the reserve for delayed delivery.

In this book the author has developed an autonomous, reactive/proactive agent that then has the ability to communicate with other agents or humans. This agent(a computer program of a special type) is developed for event management to maintain an almost continuous check on the supply line. This book uses a theoretical approach and does not provide actual code.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the most concise and excellent books in rheology.......2002-02-20

I have found this book as the reader friendly in a wide spectrum of books available on polymer rheology. The authors have maintained a fine balance between mathematical theory and physical explanations. Therefore, one can get a feel of the subject while learning through this book. The language of the book is also lucid.

I highly recommend this book for someone who wants to know what the equations and the theories in rheology means.

Last but not least, considering the progress in last few years on theoretical front, this book needs a revision!

From the author: The influence of polyethylene (PE) glycol (PEG), diatomite, and diatomite/PEG binary processing aid (BPA) on the rheological properties and the sharkskin melt fracture of three PEs was studied using a capillary rheometer. When diatomite or PEG is added to the PE matrix, they have little effect on the viscosity reduction of PEs, while the diatomite/PEG BPA shows a synergetic effect on the viscosity reduction of PEs. The incorporation of small amount of BPA was found to increase the shear-thinning behavior and decrease the melt viscosity significantly. Meanwhile, the critical apparent shear rate for the onset of sharkskin melt fracture of PEs is increased. The mechanism for BPA to improve the rheological properties and the melt flow instability of PEs was discussed. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 45:898-903, 2005. [c] 2005 Society of Plastics Engineers

                  Book Description

This book presents the main results obtained by different laboratories involved in the research group Rheology for polymer melt processing which is associated with French universities, schools of engineering, and the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - France). The group comprises some 15 research laboratories of varied disciplines (chemistry, physics, material sciences, mechanics, mathematics), but with a common challenge viz. to enhance the understanding of the relationships between macromolecular species, their rheology and their processing. Some crucial issues of polymer science have been addressed: correlation of viscoelastic macroscopic bulk property measurements and models, slip at the wall, extrusion defects, correlation between numerical flow simulations and experiments.

                  Features of the book:

                  • The book is unique in that it allows one to grasp the key issues in polymer rheology and processing at once through a series of detailed state-of-the-art contributions, which were previously scattered throughout the literature.

                  • Each paper was reviewed by experts and the book editors and some coordination was established in order to achieve a readable and easy access style.

                  • Papers have been grouped in sections covering successively: Molecular dynamics, Constitutive equations and numerical modelling, Simple and complex flows.

                  • Each paper can be read independently.

Since the book is intended as an introduction to the main topics in polymer processing, it will be of interest to graduate students as well as to scientists in academic and industrial laboratories.

                            Book Description

The book is entitled "Liary" and as one critic said it: “Not since Primary Colors has a novel captured the political backstage and sexual vibe of our nation.” The story is based on Carlin Canaby, entrepreneur extraordinaire, irreverent son of an itinerant white evangelist, immutable cynic, baby-boomered, bodacious bungler and master of liary: "the craft of formatting existing information into a more positive slant, to the betterment of deserving parties." Via his own clever reputation and against his better judgment, Carlin finds himself catapulted into the world of national politics, intricately involved in constructing a third-party presidential campaign, which ends up scandalizing even his fatigued sense of morality. In the process, he stumbles upon a coalition of corporations and special interest groups out to steal the presidency of the United States, led by William Carleton Pennington, a detrimentor from his youth. What you have is a dead heat in the polls, with one man, Carlin Canaby, standing in the way of an international fiasco; a role he must pursue while accused of murder and treason.

Maurice was apparently a very practically minded commander for this book of advice is packed, in a most readable and concise form, full of advice for tactics, strategy, and logistics. It is a treasure for the student of ancient warfare desiring knowledge of the every-day challenges of commanders. Mr. Dennis' translation is very readable while not losing too much of the Greek terminology the serious student will be seeking.

Maurice organizes his advice into an introduction followed by 11 books on topics including calvary and infantry formations, strategy, tactics, logistics, ambushes, sieges, and an analysis of the strategy and tactics of other people's in his time. The back matter of the book includes a brief but fairly thorough glossary and a good index. The front matter includes a full page map of the Byzantine empire circa AD 600. Various troop formations and orders of battle are illustrated by simple yet clear sketches and text-art.

No library of ancient history is complete without this work. Each book division can be studied alone as your interest leads making it especially useful as a reference book. At the same time, the translation and style makes it an easy read as a solid overview of ancient warfare. The thoughtful organization makes it a perfect companion for study and classroom use.

Maurice's Strategikon: Handbook of Byzantine Military Strategy is the English translation of the famous Strategikon, a practical handbook writen around 600 AD outlining Romano-Byzantine military practice and doctrine of the previous and following centuries.
This book gives indispensable first hand information of the armies of these centuries.
All texts are held in a language that is easily understandable even for those readers not having English as their native language.
Only disadvantage is, that the original Greek and Latin terms aren't always mentioned. This doesn't effect the ability to understand the texts, but make it more difficult to bring them into context with other works often overcrowded with Greek or Helenised terms.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource on Late Roman/Byzantine strategy.......2005-02-21

This is a beautifully produced translation of the Strategikon, a military manual attributed to the eastern Roman emperor Maurice and thought to have been written sometime between A.D. 580 and 600. Packed full of the accumulated wisdom of a thousand years of Hellenistic and Roman experience in warfare, the Strategikon was meant to be a primer for the novice general--roughly the Western equivalent to Sun Tzu's "Art of War."

Simply put, the Strategicon is a gold mine of historical data on the Roman army of the late 6th century. It is of particular interest because this period marks a time when Roman power had made its last vain attempt to regain authority over the Western provinces of the Empire, and was now undergoing a period of contraction and collapse. The Strategikon describes an army whose core is no longer the heavy infantry of the early Roman Principate, but armored cavalry lancers and archers. It is a time when Greek was fast becoming the predominant language in Roman society as a whole, while vestiges of Latin remained in the jargon of the army. The legion of old was replaced by the meros, the centurion by the hekatontarch.

The Strategikon records many aspects of the Roman army life at this time, including: induction of new recruits, description of ranks and responsibilities, formation of units, drills, rules, punishments, instructions on marching through enemy territory, foraging for food, and the set-up of fortified camps. It is rich in advice for the prospective general when battling against the various enemies of the Empire, from the Persians, to the Slavs, to the Avars and Goths. Perhaps most interesting of all, it contains several detailed diagrams for the order of battle of a Late Roman/Early Byzantine army of various sizes and configurations. It also gives a great deal of advice on how to defeat the enemy via guile, deception, misinformation, ambush, concealed traps, etc.

All in all, the Strategikon is a source that can not be neglected for the scholar of the Late Roman or Byzantine army. The University of Pennsylvania Press is to be congratulated for making the work available in such an accessible and attractively-produced volume.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent contemporary guide to Medieval Byzantine warfare........2003-09-11

Long attributed to the Byzantine Emperor Maurice, the "Strategikon" became the practical handbook for Byzantine army organization, covering everything from basic training to tactical planning against the armies of different nations and to basic strategy and diplomacy.

A young Byzantine man of good birth was expected to learn from childhood how to use the bow, ride a horse, then do both, while also training to fight on foot with sword, and then train to do it all in armor, and be capable of making long rides or long marches in full kit before being deemed fully qualified for service in the army.

Although heavily dependent upon mercenary forces, the Byzantines did not forget the lessons of the latter Western Roman Empire -- along with the mercenaries, the Byzantines established a hard core of well-trained native soldiers who acted as a unifying force around which the mercenaries gathered.

The "Strategikon" gives detailed marching orders for a variety of column types, orders of battle, the fighting styles of different enemies of the Byzantines, etc. It is this detail which helps the textual critics to analyze whether or not the Emperor Maurice himself wrote the book, or if it was written at his request, or under his dictation. Whoever the author, it is undoubted that he was a skilled tactician and an experienced veteran officer of high rank. In any case, "Strategikon" was for generations one of THE handbooks of military theory for the Byzantines, one which enabled them to maintain their independence (even in exile) for centuries after the book was written, and one which still has value for "Maurice's" comments on the need to train recruits thoroughly in ALL of the types of fighting which they might need to do.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth translation of a singular milestone in military texts.......2003-07-11

This is my first exposure to Maurice's handbook, so I cannot write a critical review of Mr. Dennis' work. Absent my ability to critique the translation, I give the book five stars as a combined score for Mr. Dennis and the long-departed Roman author.

Mr. Dennis' translation is very readable and smooth. The glossary was valuable while reading, and the index has been useful as I'm going over some specific topics again. The introductory material provided enough tutorial that I could enjoy the text without confusion. I appreciated the footnotes that give the Latin commands for directing troops. I find the "Bibliographical Notes" more useful than the typical stark list of references.

The only thing that I could really wish for are footnotes detailing variants in the surviving texts. While that would satisfy my curiosity, it could serve only as a distraction for those not interested in minutiae. One can't mark the book down for personal quirks. :-)

As for the text itself, it's a fascinating journey through the mind of a seasoned Roman general. Written to train the Empire's top military leaders, the well-organized handbook presents the material thoroughly without repetition. The plain, no-nonsense language keeps the material accessible to the non-erudite. The fact that it influenced warfare for hundreds of subsequent years comes as no surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Levant during Latter Middle Ages.......2007-08-30

First of all, emphasis should be made that, despite its title, this book is not so much on the Crusades, nor about all of south-west Asia, but rather the book is focused on the Arab Levant, that is, "Bilad Ash-sham" (modern Syria, Jordan, Israel/Palestine, and Lebanon), as well as Egypt, with a good amount on Anatolia (modern Turkey).

In fact, a more accurate title of the book would be "A History of the Crusader, Ayyubid, and Mamluke Kingdoms", as they are the real focus ot the book.

If you interest is any these subjects, then this is an excellent over-view of their history and developement. Here Prof.Holt covers in significant detail all the various complex and labrynthine developements and politics of these three states (with side glances of those states that came into conflict/cooperation with them, such as the Byzantines, Seljuks, and Mongols).

Especially fascinating is his covering of the powerful Mamlukes, from their complex and bloody rise to power, to their fall at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1517.

As noted in the title, the book ends with the fall of the Mamlukes, and with them the fall of "Bilad Ash-Sham" and Egypt to the Ottoman Empire, and indeed the end of the "Middle Ages" for the Near East.

If you are interested only in the Crusades, then there are other books for you.

But if you are interested in the later Middle Ages in the Arab Levant, including the Crusader presence in it, and especially if you are interested in the history of the Ayyubid and the Mamlukes (both on which there is sadly very little works), then this is the book for you.

Note: If you are especially interested in the Mamlukes, then Prof. Robert Irwin's "The Middle East in the Middle Ages: The Early Mamluk Sultanate, 1250-1382" is also a great book, though as its title indicates, it only covers the first half of the Sultanate.

And Carl F. Petry's "Protectors or Praetorians?: The Last Mamluk Sultans and Egypt's Waning As a Great Power (Suny Series in Medieval Middle East History)" about the last years of the Sultanate.

And ofcourse the Osprey books by Prof.David Nicolle on this period and region.

4 out of 5 stars Solid work .......2005-01-05

Is able to provide readers with a new theory (at least in the eyes of westerners probably not so for people in the middle east)

The crusaders did not get as far as this did due to the fact that they fought so hard. Rather they got as far as they did because of the internal politics of the Islamic World. At the time of the first crusades the Islamic world was reeling from the assaults of the Tatars and Mongols they really didn't care about the encroachment of crusaders partly because the distance was so vast. An interesting thing to point out and a view that is probably very accurate. The book then provides the reader with an explanation of how this situation was made to come about. Blame mostly gets laid at the feet of the Ottoman Empire.

Overall-Goodish book, not the best on the subject but not the worst either.

                              Book Description

Computer science and artificial intelligence in particular have no curriculum in research methods, as other sciences do. This book presents empirical methods for studying complex computer programs: exploratory tools to help find patterns in data, experiment designs and hypothesis-testing tools to help data speak convincingly, and modeling tools to help explain data. Although many of these techniques are statistical, the book discusses statistics in the context of the broader empirical enterprise. The first three chapters introduce empirical questions, exploratory data analysis, and experiment design. The blunt interrogation of statistical hypothesis testing is postponed until chapters 4 and 5, which present classical parametric methods and computer-intensive (Monte Carlo) resampling methods, respectively. This is one of few books to present these new, flexible resampling techniques in an accurate, accessible manner.

Much of the book is devoted to research strategies and tactics, introducing new methods in the context of case studies. Chapter 6 covers performance assessment, chapter 7 shows how to identify interactions and dependencies among several factors that explain performance, and chapter 8 discusses predictive models of programs, including causal models. The final chapter asks what counts as a theory in AI, and how empirical methods -- which deal with specific systems -- can foster general theories.

Mathematical details are confined to appendixes and no prior knowledge of statistics or probability theory is assumed. All of the examples can be analyzed by hand or with commercially available statistics packages.

The Common Lisp Analytical Statistics Package (CLASP), developed in the author's laboratory for Unix and Macintosh computers, is available from The MIT Press.

The title of the book could have been easily "Empirical Methods for Computer Science" or even "Empirical Methods for Science."

The goal of the book is to give a gentle but solid introduction into empirical research, experimental science and interpretation of data.

First four chapters are really a must-read for anyone who is interested in empirical methods. In the first chapter "Empirical Research", the author lays the foundations. Chapter two "Exploratory Data Analysis" starts with the fundamentals of statistics of one variable and introduces time series and execution traces. I really loved the "Fitting functions to Data in Scatterplots" subchapter. The introduction continues in the third chapter "Basic Issues in Experimental Design" where we learn about control, spurious effects, sampling bias, dependent variables and pilot experiments. The author gives some nice advices here. Fourth chapter is "Hypothesis Testing and Estimation" and this one concludes the introductory part.

Chapters 5-9 are a little bit more advanced and somewhat biased towards Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence but could be an interesting and refreshing read to anyone who wants to get a solid foundation to experiment design, execution, data collection and interpretation.

The author uses experimental data generated by a system called "Phoenix" (which he codeveloped) as the main example in the book.

                                Book Description

This book presents a theory of learning new causal relationships by making use of perceived regularities in the environment, general knowledge of causality, and existing causal knowledge. Integrating ideas from the psychology of causation and machine learning, the author introduces a new learning procedure called theory-driven learning that uses abstract knowledge of causality to guide the induction process. br br Known as OCCAM, the system uses theory-driven learning when new experiences conform to common patterns of causal relationships, empirical learning to learn from novel experiences, and explanation-based learning when there is sufficient existing knowledge to explain why a new outcome occurred. Together these learning methods construct a hierarchical organized memory of causal relationships. As such, OCCAM is the first learning system with the ability to acquire, via empirical learning, the background knowledge required for explanation-based learning. br br Please note: This program runs on common lisp. br
