Book Description
This long-awaited, greatly-expanded new edition of a best-selling guide offers an encyclopedic and systematic collection of useful synthetic methodology, including tens of thousands of reactions and synthetic transformations. The first edition has been reviewed in the professional journals as "clearly...the first choice for researchers seeking information on synthetic transformations." And as "useful to anyone who must do organic synthesis, especially those whose focus is not strictly organic chemistry. It provides a...clear road map to the synthetic literature and should be kept within easy reach of the chemist's desk."
Customer Reviews:
A must have for any medicinal chemist.......2007-08-25
This is one of the best reference books to use if something in literature doesn't go according to plan...which it almost always does.
It's also extremely helpful in drug design and helping plan those unknown reactions, etc.
I don't think this would be helpful to anyone except organic or synthetic chemists.
review/comment in response to foregoing poor reviews.......2007-04-04
The following comments are offered as counterpoint to other reviews, and are collected here so that I can offer the excellent rating I do, above. I apologize for the redundancies that appear. M-ED
In response to 'Matthew M. Yau':
COT is the practical encyclopedic work of choice among books of its type, and is well worth the time it takes to master it's indexing and formats.
Other encyclopedic books lack the practical pointedness and insight that comes from an actively publishing chemist/group still in the thick of the research game. This criticism cannot be leveled against the Larock book. That group is in the thick of it, and moving ahead the forefront of modern research chemistry. (Most of us wish that we might contribute as much as he/they already have.) In re: comparison with March, see also Comment to 'gregory.schaaf' below.
In response to 'A reader' / 'don't waste you time' [sic] :
The care and thought that appears to have gone into this review makes it almost unworthy of reply, but since Amazon has no weighting system for their review scoring, and this review brings the average score down for this important synthetic organic research reference, it demands comment.
COT is the practical encyclopedic work of choice among books of its type, and is well worth the time it takes to master it's indexing and formats.
Moreover, in a period where the shear numbers of articles on syntheses and methodologoes are exploding, the careful hand of a knowledgable pro becomes all the more useful. Choosing problems to work on is a challenge, not of seeing what's out there, but of understanding what's not -- ie, perceiving the areas of darkness amidst an emphasis on the well-lit geographies of the chemistry landscape. Map's like Larock make much faster the job of perceiving such, allowing one to use computer search tools and other encyclopedic works all the more effectively to do the followup scholarly work necessary (filling in gaps, looking to more recent literature threads).
Speaking personally, my group and I are publishing, and have received funding for, novel synthetic paths/ideas that arise because we are stimulated by the cataloging the Larock group and others have done.
Finally, other encyclopedic books -- and the above reviewer's naive comment to the contrary, the one volume nature of Larock, thick as it is, is a benefit -- lack the practical pointedness and insight that comes from an actively publishing chemist/group still in the thick of the research game. This criticism cannot be leveled against the LaRock book. They are in the thick of it, and moving ahead the forefront of modern research chemistry. (Most of us wish that we might contribute as much as he/they already have.)
In response to 'gregory.schaaf':
It is generally understood (I think) that [other']s book, while encyclopedic, lacked some of the practical pointedness and insight that might come from an actively publishing chemist/group still in the thick of the research game. This question might be addressed by the addition of [new authors to] current production.
The foregoing criticism cannot be leveled against the LaRock book. Larock's group is in the thick of it, and moving ahead the forefront of modern research chemistry. (Most of us wish that we might contribute as much as he/they already have.) In this sense, COT is the practical encyclopedic work of choice, and is well worth the time it takes to master it's indexing and formats.
Agreed - a must have for the practicing organic chemist.......2004-02-15
I agree that the bad reviews are probably predominantly from non-chemists. Larock's first edition has become an absolute standard reference on the desk of the practicing organic chemist, who is after lead references and an idea of how a given transformation has been done. I have seen his 2nd edition and it is much the same, only updated and expanded. The price is high, but typical for the field and quite justified. I am waiting til I can buy it with faculty startup funds, but in 6 months it will be on my desk!
Ignore the non-chemists reviewing this book........2001-01-10
I want to help others sort through the conflicting reviews of this book. As a PhD chemist, I can say unequivocally that this book is not for the non-professional, as I suspect the negative reviewers are. The indexing system is not intuitive, but makes sense once you've begun to use it. One of the reviewers complains that database searching is better than this book. This book is intended to help you find straightforward procedures for relatively straightforward reactions and allows you to look at the many things that have been tried to effect a given transformation. These are things that the databases can't help much with since these reactions have been done in the literature thousands of times, and any search will generate a huge mess of matches.
Hoping Big but Disappointing.......2000-10-04
The title "Comprehensive Orgainc Transformations" strikes me with much hope that all representative functional groups tranfer and reactions will be fully explained and included in one volume for easy reference. Well, not so quick.
Cited references from this volume might be the only (+) that I will credit to the piece. The organization of the book is extremely perplexing and weird. It is not very easy to find a reaction that I desire. In fact, the details for transformation are disappointingly little. If you plan to get this book with the same expectation, you should turn to Jerry March's Advanced Organic Chemistry or the Beilstein Cross-Fire Organic Reaction and Compounds software. Any advanced texts on organic synthesis will give you more details.
Oh, by the way, the price () is just stunningly high and ridiculous.

Book Description
VCH Publishers is proud to announce that a searchable electronic version of the critically acclaimed and best-selling handbook 'Comprehensive Organic Transformations' by Richard C. Larock soon will be available on CD-ROM. 'Comprehensive Organic Transformations on CD-ROM' will contain almost 15.000 reactions and more than 23.000 references, and will follow the same systematic organization used so successfully in the book.
In 'Comprehensive Organic Transformations on CD-ROM' transformations are organized into major sections according to the class of functional group synthesized. Transformations within each section are grouped according to reaction type. Extensive tables list the most important reagents used to effect each transformation. All transformations presented are fully referenced, with citations from over 160 journals, books and reviews. The Transformation Index lists all organic transformations covered in the text by chemical name, sorted in two ways: according to the organic product of the transformation (as in the print edition), and according to the organic starting material (a new feature).
'Comprehensive Organic Transformations on CD-ROM' is designed with easy-to-use Polio VIEWS software and may be run on either Windows or Macintosh operating systems.
Customer Reviews:
comprehensive references.......2000-03-17
This is really a good reference book for organic chemists, and it's very comprehensive. The drawback is the index. I hope they can improve it for the next editions.

Book Description
A serendipitous discovery in nuclear physics has led to a useful tool in materials science. In the late 1950s, scientists at General Electric (among them the author) discovered that when mica is exposed to energetic charged particles (such as are emitted in radioactive decay or occur in cosmic rays), the particles leave latent tracks in the material. When such a material is chemically etched, the tracks are revealed as narrow, deep pits, whose size and shape is determined both by the particle that made the track and by the technique used in etching. It soon turned out that glass, plastics, or certain other materials can be similarly treated. This discovery paved the way not only for a new and useful method of measuring radioactivity, it has also found widespread applications in other fields, ranging from geology and materials science to archaeology and art history. Thus, for example, naturally produced tracks can be used to estimate the age of a mineral deposit or an archaeological material; and deliberately produced tracks can be used to make extremely fine filters. Fleischer presents the history of these developments and discusses the applications of the technique in a way that will be interesting to anyone with a minimal knowledge of physics.

Book Description
A fun-filled farce with a touch of fantasy. Wendell Wellnigh, downsized cosmologist, loves three beauties; Faith, his globe-hopping fiancée whom he suspects is CIA; Hope, a marine biologist who smells and tastes better than any woman he ever met; and Chastity, his traffic-stopping teen cousin, for whom even Dudley the monkey has the hots. Wendell abandons cosmology and founds a business that adds sex and music to whale-watching. Unky, Wendell's hero and Chastity's father, writes a best-selling novel titled The Hooker You Have Reached Is No Longer in Service. And Dudley the monkey keeps everyone in stitches. Meanwhile, an enigma named Michael Maker courts Chastity, keeps getting younger, and makes all who object to him forget their objections. All's well that ends well, and this novel ends very well for all concerned.
"Some of the funniest material I've read in years." The late Herbert A. Kenny; author, former Book Editor of the Boston Globe, and co-founder of the National Book Critics Circle.
A delicious read. I love the book. Gwen Costa, Ashley Books, Inc.
Truly charming." Deborah Hogan, Del Rey Books.
Book Description
In a work of extraordinary narrative power, filled with brilliant personalities and vivid scenes of dramatic action, Robert K. Massie, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and Dreadnought, elevates to its proper historical importance the role of sea power in the winning of the Great War.
The predominant image of this first world war is of mud and trenches, barbed wire, machine guns, poison gas, and slaughter. A generation of European manhood was massacred, and a wound was inflicted on European civilization that required the remainder of the twentieth century to heal.
But with all its sacrifice, trench warfare did not win the war for one side or lose it for the other. Over the course of four years, the lines on the Western Front moved scarcely at all; attempts to break through led only to the lengthening of the already unbearably long casualty lists.
For the true story of military upheaval, we must look to the sea. On the eve of the war in August 1914, Great Britain and Germany possessed the two greatest navies the world had ever seen. When war came, these two fleets of dreadnoughts—gigantic floating castles of steel able to hurl massive shells at an enemy miles away—were ready to test their terrible power against each other.
Their struggles took place in the North Sea and the Pacific, at the Falkland Islands and the Dardanelles. They reached their climax when Germany, suffocated by an implacable naval blockade, decided to strike against the British ring of steel. The result was Jutland, a titanic clash of fifty-eight dreadnoughts, each the home of a thousand men.
When the German High Seas Fleet retreated, the kaiser unleashed unrestricted U-boat warfare, which, in its indiscriminate violence, brought a reluctant America into the war. In this way, the German effort to “seize the trident” by defeating the British navy led to the fall of the German empire.
Ultimately, the distinguishing feature of Castles of Steel is the author himself. The knowledge, understanding, and literary power Massie brings to this story are unparalleled. His portrayals of Winston Churchill, the British admirals Fisher, Jellicoe, and Beatty, and the Germans Scheer, Hipper, and Tirpitz are stunning in their veracity and artistry.
Castles of Steel is about war at sea, leadership and command, courage, genius, and folly. All these elements are given magnificent scope by Robert K. Massie’s special and widely hailed literary mastery.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, reads like a thriller.......2007-08-24
This is simply a terrific quickly paced and scintillating read about the role of the Royal Navy and the Imperial Navy of Germany during the Great War. I did not expect to be so enthralled, but Massie writes with both such intimacy and scope, and terrific characterization, not acerbically like Tuchman, but comfortably and excitingly.
Falklands, Jutland, Scapa Flow.......2007-07-06
I'm a naval history buff and greatly enjoyed how Massie fleshed out the characters involved in his history of WWI at sea. He did an excellent job portraying the men who fought the war at sea and in the war offices back home. An even-handed novel, he doesn't demonise the either side which makes for easy reading. If you want an account of Derfflinger's 'death ride' this isn't the best place to go, but for a greater understanding of how the great fleets were destined to be used, and how the men in charge got things done, this is a very excellent place!
Recommended!
Strong Narrative.......2007-05-26
This is one of the better books on the naval engagements during WWI. Massie's strong narrative carries you right along. I learned Churchill was a blundering fool, I came to have more appreciation for Jellicoe and what he was up against both politically and militarily, and I learned Beatty was a p*ssy-whipped prima donna.
The naval battles are lovingly recreated. Massie fills the novel with anecdotes which make these historical figures seem more real than they already are. Well-written and a careful attention to detail make this one a must have for anyone who is interested in this conflict. It could have used more maps detailing the intricate movements of the fleets, but that is its only flaw.
Fantastic Book!.......2007-05-23
While I may not be able to do Castles of Steel as much justice as the reviews preceding mine, I can add my appreciation for Mr. Massie's work to the growing list of admirers. As I stated in a previous review of another Massie work, his ability to craft the text into a "historical story" is unparalleled. From brief excerpts on specific naval vessels, and their crew, to the thoroughly intimate discussions between Jacky Fischer and Winston Churchill, Mr. Massie tells a thought provoking and stirring history of the "War At Sea" during the Great War.
Worthy history.......2007-05-11
I checked out this book from my local library for two reasons: one, because I love reading about the World Wars. Two, as a personal challenge to show that I can read a serious history book under my own steam. With this book, there was no chance of failure of the latter.
Don't be fooled by the 800-page length; "Castles of Steel" is an easily-read, well-balanced blend of politics (the machinations that drove the First Sea Lords Prince Louis of Battenberg and John Jellicoe from office), biography (the strained and loveless marriage of Admiral David Beatty and his American wife, Ethel), and tactics (the blunders and coups of The Battle of Jutland). Massie is clearly more interested in the people, though; the personalities and tendencies that variously led to victory or defeat are never far from the fore, though I hesitate to call it a book for the "great man" theory of history. More OT: the book is user-friendly, meaning you don't have to know ships and naval terms backwards and forwards to get it, or even have more than a basic background in WW I history.
The quibbles I had with the book are more matters of personal preference and interest than of any real faults; for instance, Massie continually switches between--for instance--First Sea Lord and Winston Churchill. I also would have liked to have seen a treatment of submarines equal to that given to dreadnoughts, but well--this *is* about the Grand Fleet, and the prequel of sorts *was* "Dreadnought", so YMMV.
Definitely worth a read for WW I or British Navy buffs.
