Customer Reviews:
Stellar!.......2004-12-01
For the very first time I really understand what Quantum Mechanics is all about!
Dr. Blinder has the ability to explain very complex (and often strange) things in a way that makes them seem less complex and more approachable. A rare ability indeed!

Book Description
Geodetic measurements provide high-accuracy observations of the deformation of the Earth on time-scales ranging from a few hours to decades; they constitute an integral part of every study of the planet's dynamic behavior. This book describes geodetic methods and results that are relevant to
the study of the Earth, along with the geophysical and geological implications of these observations. The measurement techniques include classical terrestrial observations in use since the late nineteenth century as well as modern methods based on space technology, interferometric observations of
radio stars, the tracking of satellites, and laser-ranging to the Moon. Because a complete interpretation of the geodetic observations requires a discussion of Earth physics, geological processes, and meteorological and oceanographic phenomena, this book will be of interest to all
geophysicists.

To Dare and to Conquer: Special Operations and the Destiny of Nations, from Achilles to Al Qaeda.......2007-07-15
Excellent compilation of data from very diverse sources that escapae the conventional witerS of history.
Andre Minuth, MD
Dare to Conquer.......2007-05-07
Leebaert has produced a complete study of what we now call "special operations." His work is supported with exhaustive references. As such it stands as "the bible" on the subject and will be used as a textbook at the War College, Annapolis, Westpoint, and elsewhere when consideration needs to be given to special operations.
The thesis of the book as I understand it is this: A few highly trained soldiers with a creative plan of attack, can accomplish nearly anything. Furthermore, we live in times when, in the absence of all-out conventional war, sneak attacks will become the norm by each side in any controversy.
Historically we in the US are familiar with such tactics. Consider Washington's crossing of the Delaware to effectuate a very successful surprise attack on German mercenaries. The "Minute Men" (farmers actually) from behind trees picked off the English soldiers marching in formation.
Not all such plans prevail, e.g. "The Bay of Pigs."
Have we lost sight of what works in our rush to do old fashioned battle in Viet Nam, Korea, and Iraq? How can the US change its tactics to meet the realities of a sea change in doing warfare?
Unfortunately, at present, as the author points out, each branch of the service including the intelligence branches has special ops forces, but they don't share; don't talk to each other; don't coordinate. How prepared are we under the circumstances?
Perhaps Derek LeeBaert's extraordinary and well written book will be a wake up call. Let us hope so.
George Thornally, Author
"AOL by GEORGE! The Inside Story of America Online"
And, soon to be published: "VIRGIN: The Mystery of Amos Virgin"
Needs a strong editor.......2007-05-02
The writing in this book is jumbled, verbose and incomprehensible. It seems this book was not written, per se, but probably recorded from conversations between several knowledgeable people constantly interupting each other, without any separation among speakers. "we recorded it, to the printer"
To Dare & To Conquer.......2007-04-03
Derek Leebaert has written a wonderful compendium of the achievement of special forces throughout the ages, starting from the times of Homer to the present day. Staggeringly researched and elegantly told, these efforts have changed the course of history through the conquistadors' and commandos' incisive thrusts in ways often thought impossible. But Professor Leebart is not content merely to relate these stories of remarkable heroism (and often unbelievable recklessness); he gleans the consistent patterns of what can create success and what forebodes disaster. Perhaps most interesting to the reader are the often wayward attributes of the most successful proponents of special forces.
What then are the lessons for today? Must a nation that prides itself on its openness and democratic way of life become more security conscious and constrictive in the traditional liberties afforded its citizens? Can America rely on its intelligence apparatus to perform the duties that the 21st century requires? Will the religious (or national) zeal for self-immolation of others, where fingerprintless midnight raids are replaced by more visible suicide bombers, ultimately be extraordinarily difficult to defeat? These are among the natural topics that Professor Leebaert starts to address in his last chapters; perhaps a follow-on book would allow him the scope to pull all the relevant strands together.
Great Overview of the Special Operator in History.......2007-01-11
Derek Leebaert has provided a timely and well researched overview of how the special operator has been utilized and leveraged throughout history. Leebaert begins in ancient times, including citing the biblical story of Gideon, through the near future to depict how exactly special forces have fit into national policy making
Leebaert has provided many great examples of SF teams achieving the nearly impossible. The lists include Alexander and hi men, Benedict Arnold's unit outside Montreal, the attacks on the South American Empires on the mid 15th and 16th centuries, on through to more modern wars in Europe in 1915 and all over the world 20 Years later. Along the way he provides biographical sketches of some forgotten men in history who have done the particularly incredible.
I highly recommend this book as a place to start to understand the uses and capabilities of special operators; especially as US foreign policy now highlights the utility of Special Forces in the global war on terrorism.
Book Description
The first book to examine the life of Henry Fitzroy, the only illegitimate child ever publicly acknowledged by Henry VIII.
Customer Reviews:
A Book for aficionados of the Tudor period.......2006-07-08
Dying at the age of 18, Henry Fitzroy is, in the end, a person of little or no historical significance. There was the potential that he could have become historically significant, but he didn't; this may make him a little interest to general history readers. On the other hand, as the king's acknowledged son, there is also considerable documentation about his life, and it did intersect with some of the flashpoints of history. For the reader interested in the period, his story fleshes out the life and upbringing of a high-ranking male. Murphy also checks upon some of the minor, disputed details of the question of the succession.
What is very interesting about biographies like this is that they bring out the details of the period better than biographies of the famous. The latter are so filled with political and social events that very often the subject isn't developed as a person, even when there is copious information. In a way, that is a shame. It would be nice to have "personal" biographies of such people where the already heavily documented major historical events are a background to their daily life. I had read a great deal of information about the Tudors before I learned that Henry played cards with (and lost to!) his cellarer, or that Anne Boleyn, obviously a woman after my own heart, insisted that he move his fighting cocks so that she could sleep in in the morning.
One problem that I do have with Murphy is that she struggles so hard to make him seem more important. If his neighbors were bringing him gifts when he was 12, I think it is more likely to ingratiate themselves with him and his father, not because he was personally doing a fabulous job of managing his estates. His life wasn't one that was eccentric or fascinating or wittily told that I would recommend it to everyone, but I think that people really interested in the period will find it improves their general understanding.
Interesting topic, but the writing didn't grab me.......2006-02-15
I love Henry...love any book about him, his wives, his children, I have all of them. This one caught my eye because it was written about one of his children you rarely hear anything about other than his mother's name and that he died relatively young. I was excited to start reading, but found the presentation wasn't grabbing my attention, and I found myself not being as interested in the information presented as I thought I would be. I suppose you could call the presentation as text-bookish. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy non-fiction, especially historical non-fiction, but this one just didn't keep me interested.
The Lost Son.......2005-06-16
Among the more grandiose plans amongst the ministers of Henry VIII's administration was to legitimize Henry FitzRoy and marry him to his legitimate half-sister Mary (i.e. Bloody Mary). It has been rumored amongst historians that this idea was in fact direct from the King's mouth. According to 16th century standards, siblings who shared the same father (but perhaps not the same mother) were considered 'full-blood' siblings. Siblings who shared the same mother but different fathers were those considered "half". Just a little tidbit of historical nonsense.
Passably Competent Account of a Little Known Bastard.......2004-09-02
Henry VIII while famous for his six wives, did not stop there: among his many extracurriculars was Elizabeth Blount, a young lady who bore him a son, Henry FitzRoy, who was later made Duke of Richmond. The Bastard Price was born well before Ann Boleyn had come on the scene, was publicly acknowledged as the "natural son" of the King and showered with titles and offices. As such, it would not have taken much - or at least it would have taken less trouble than it might have seemed, certainly less trouble than Boleyn marriage brought - to "legitimize" Richmond and thereby solve the most pressing crisis of the late 1520s and early 1530s, namely, Henry's failure to sire a male heir. Murphy does a reasonable job of walking us through the permutations and combination of this would-be scenario, and one is left pondering the possibilities: could the English Reformation have been averted through a bit of subtle intrigue and a quick marriage to Blount? Though the story is interesting, the book itself is a bit slow and assumes quite a deal of background knowledge.
The man who was allmost Henry The Ninth of England.......2002-07-22
This book is a must read for those interested in Tudor Royalty. It reveals an entirely different view of Henry VIII and the problems[real and imagined]he faced concerning his desire for a legitimate male heir to the Throne of England. The politics surrounding Henry VIII and his Court are well researched and presented in a clear way which involves the reader with the Duke of Norfolk and Anne Boleyn's backers and Family[Seymour] as they fought for power and the favor of the King.

Book Description
In days of yore, humans believed that lightning bolts were evidence of the gods' wrath; today, of course, we know they are actually a discharge of atmospheric electricity.Might there also be reasonable, rational, scientifically based explanations for phenomena we currently attribute to the supernatural? Yes, says Michael White, author of books on subjects ranging from Stephen Hawking to genetic research to Isaac Asimov, as well as hundreds of articles on cutting-edge science issues. As both a science expert and someone who has had first-hand experience with the paranormal, White is uniquely qualified to discuss the strange and bizarre--to explain the seemingly unexplainable.
With wit, humor and a lucidity of language that makes even the most convoluted subjects accessible to the layperson, white tackles two dozen of the hottest--and most controversial--"inexplicable" phenomena, providing answers to intriguing questions including:
- Have aliens visited the Earth-and abducted people?
- Is Atlantis resting in a watery grave and, if so, where?
- Is there really a way to "create" zombies?
- How could we see the future?
- And much more!
Probing into the possible scientific underpinnings of everything from psychic spoonbending to interstellar travel to multiple dimensions, Michael White looks at the weird world of the paranormal, and shows how unbelievable things can remain within the limits of accepted science. Weird Scienceproves that truth certainly is stranger than fiction-and often much more interesting, too.
Customer Reviews:
Entertainment masquerading as science.......2000-08-04
There's a scene in the beginning of the movie Ghostbusters, where Bill Murray and crew are being thrown off campus. The dean explains how Murray's methods are sloppy, his conclusions are dubious, and, in short, he's a poor scientist. "But the kids love us," Murray retorts. And that's the real problem with this book. Sure, it's entertaining enough, but it's just not science. White's logic is often faulty and his offerings of "possible" explanations are simply implausible. Robert Park, in his (far superior) book Voodoo Science, talks about the "possible". If someone told you a dog was running down Fifth Avenue, Park explains, you'd have little reason to doubt them. If someone told you a lion was doing the same, you'd be justifiably skeptical and probably require some additional detail (such as a recently escaped zoo lion). But if someone told you a dinosaur was walking down Fifth Avenue, it would be entirely different. Sure, it might be possible, but it would be so unlikely as to be unworthy of further investigation. And that's exactly what White's wild speculations are: "possible" in some very limited sense, but so improbable (and scientifically unsupported) as to be unworthy of further debate. White "talks the talk", including superficial references to important concepts such as quantum mechanics and relativity theory, but simply doesn't build upon these in any useful or rational way. Added to this are the frequent flaws in White's logic. In support of voodoo, for example, White argues that organized religions hold equally unenlightened views on such things as abortion. This is simply cultural relativism, wholly inappropriate in an ethical discussion, and simply embarassing when offered as scientific "proof". White, admittedly, wants so much to believe that this desperation intrudes on his analysis. In his discussion of intergalatic travel, for instance, he notes that the limitations of physics make interstellar travel virtually impossible. But then he adds (inexplicably and without further explanation) that intelligent life does exist in the universe. Huh? Added to this bias is an undisguised slant against spirituality that permeates this book and often leads to conflicting results. There is no life after death, White concludes in the chapter on ghosts, but, yes, ghosts do exist. Again, huh? You'd think that after almost a whole chapter offering explanations for the existence of the Loch Ness Monster (all "proof" of which has been clearly discredited), White could afford to expound in a bit more detail on these important conlusions he casually throws at the reader. Sadly, he does not. Which is not to say that this is not an entertaining book. But like Bill Murray's ghostbuster, it's simply sensationalism posing as science.
Informative and Interesting.......2000-06-27
Michael White's 1999 "Weird Science" is a book about scientific and pseudo-scientific opinion on time travel, UFOs, ESP, ghosts, zombies, spontaneous human combustion, faith healing, cults, stigmata, miracles, out-of-body experiences, alchemy, and various other paranormal phenomena. White offers few answers, but gives a reasonably balanced discussion of observed data and plausible theories. He describes the poisons and psychoactive chemicals that create zombies, but says that alien abductions are fiction. He says that ghost sitings -- like alien abductions -- are only experienced at night. No reason is known, although White considers the possibility that ghostly apparitions are holographic scenes stored in some physical matrix. He doesn't put much stock in out-of-body or near-death experiences, considering them adequately explained by science. He accepts time travel (and precognition) only in the context of worm holes and massive spatial anomalies, and rejects telekinesis, poltergeists, and spoon bending because electromagnetic brain waves don't have sufficient power to move furniture around. (Non-electromagnetic energy might be channeled, but no such force has been persuasively demonstrated -- unless you accept miracles and the power of prayer. Still, a few PSI and chi phenomena do seem to be repeatable. Maybe one will yet win James Randi's $1M prize.) Quantum mechanics is still a mystery, and White doesn't rule out the possibility of multiple universes forking off from every [observed?] particle collision. He is less generous with Biblical miracles, claiming that the parting of the Red Sea was really traversal of a papyrus swamp known as the Reed Sea. Whatever, it's an interesting book. Not astonishing or inspiring, but worth a scan. Maybe physics is all there is, but it's fun to keep an open mind. Or to think about Robert Heinlein's 1959 story "All You Zombies," with one time traveller as his/her own mother, father, daughter, and mentor (p. 161). [Computists' Weekly.]
what can be? or, can it? what a wonderful work, this book is.......2000-06-16
This is one of those rare finds where the title means just what it says. Science is weird. If you have ever asked yourself the question, is there anyone out there? You just might be surprised at the answer. Mr. White, using a slightly bent and twisted sense of intelligent humor defines exactly how, or even if, these popular notions about space and life are possible. He answers, with pure logic, intelligence, and the latest knowledge, all of those theories advanced by every extra terrestial nut that has ever put forth the contents of another book without the slightest shred of proof behind it. He, further postulates, using scientific knowledge, exactly what it would take to beome life as we know it, or even life as we could not know it. He attacks each new subject with the same patience and logic necessary to make informed conclusions, not sell books or create hysteria. It is a pure pleasure to read exactly how we do, and how impossible sometimes it is, for what we might like to think is out there, to really be there. This book would b e worth three times the asking price. It is written in everyday terms, is extremely interesting, is fun and puts your mind into the stated scientific conclusions as if you were actually there. It is a total pleasure to read from cover to cover. I found it impossible to put down. I take my literary hat off to mr. White. I highly recommend this book for all who want to know why, and when you learn why and how, you want to learn when and why, which leads to learning if, which leads to . . . . ?
