This book was a required purchase for a recent home practitioners course in equine Acupressure and Photonic Acupoint Therapy. I find that I am using and refering to charts from this book several times a week. It is a fantastic resource that is easy to read, easy to understands and is very helpful. After major bodywork on a horse recently I showed the book to our equine physiotherapist while we were working out the horse's treatment plan until his next visit to the horse and he thoroughly approved of my proposed treatment plan according to the charts in the book. Not just an endorsement of the quality of the information from myself and the lecturers, but also from our own equine physiotherapist.

This is an interesting and well written book on equine acupressure, and also the only on the market! Very clear and simple explanation on TCM (traditional chinese medicine) and principles behind it all.
On the other hand, the drawings are too vague to actually locate the points on your horse. They tell you to "feel it" but it isn't enough! They give you "recipes" of points for different conditions which can be fun to try but may be disapointing if you expect results. In TCM, there in not a pill or recipe for each disease like in western thinking.
Overall, an excellent introduction to the subject, but makes you hungry for more!

This book is excellent for the person new to the concepts and applications of FTIR spectroscopy. Smith uses clear and concise language that is easy to interpret. Other books about the same subject are very difficult to read, and the language is too technical. This book provides an excellent base to build your knowledge of the subject on. Hats off to Dr. Smith - his book has helped me a lot.

This book use very simplistic explanation of FTIR Spectroscopy. It is oriented on non-technical person with no background in physics. At the same time the terminology used requires that background. Result: confusion and disappointment. Not to mistake an honorable reader, the word "Fundamentals" in the title should be replaced with something like " Introduction.... for technicians".

Conceptual models have been most commonly inferred from analyses of topography and investigator perspectives derived from fieldwork. The main stumbling blocks to understanding surface

This book does an ecellent job telling the story of the role of George Patton's Third U.S. Army in the Battle of the Bulge, the largest battle the United States ever took part in. Not only is it very detailed for a somewhat small book, it also covers the German plan of attack and operation very well despite the subject being primarily the reaction of the Third army. A very good work by a notable historian.Recommended to anyone studying the Battle of the Bulge and the Ardennes counter offensive.

Michael Greenýs ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý is one creative piece that explains the details of the Battle of the Bulge. Michael Green has been one of the most profound authors on military issues and World War II related books. The book provided in depth information on what Patton and his third army did when the Germans launched a desperate counter-offensive called ýWacht am Rheiný, translated to be Watch the Rhine where the Nazi defenders charged through the Ardennes. Combat maps, quotes from the soldiers, Patton himself and even from accounts of German soldiers gave highlight to strength and weaknesses of both sides of the war. Real photographs and comments from soldiers interviewed at the time, including the American third army, the German Volksgrenadier divisions making Michael Greenýs ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý a great book for me to read.
Micheal Green is technically one of the most best authors on Patton and World War II related material, with his array of books already published like Patton's Tank Drive: D-Day to Victory and Patton: Operation Cobra and Beyond. All those experience gained from writing these previous books about Patton helped to make ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý better and more comprehensive. Michaelýs Wife, Gladys also contributed to his works as his co-author and assistant. As we all know, two brains is always better than one.
ýGeorge Patton and the Battle of the Bulgeý is one meticulously crafted book with details to many fine elements of the war many books overlooked. One hundred sixty pages in font 10 San Serif and pictures describing the war that even tells what weapons the soldiers depicted are using.
ýThe most important favor that influenced Hitlerýs decision to attack the Ardennes was the Allied advance across France to the German boarder, between August and September 1944. Hitler Considered this a more pressing danger to Germany than the Soviet advance in the east. Details like this make this book an easy reading for the short time that I am pressed.
The book is divided into 4 large chapters/sections, Opening moves, The German attack and American reaction, The road to Bastogne, Clearing the Bastogne area. This concept of simplicity helps the reader to be not confused with useless details that ruin many great books and chapter titles with known settings (i.e. The road to Bastogne) help the reader to feel easy with what they already knew. A great book about the war has always been awarded for its simplicity and this one is no other. The first chapter, Opening moves starts out like this:
ýMany historians and writers have suspected that the idea for the German Ardennes counteroffensive of December 16, 1944. (Know to Americans as the Battle of the Bulge) was first conceived in Adolf Hitlerýs mind sometime during the last two weeks of July 1944.ý
Simplicity and word choice made the book a breeze and without much pain to read. Its like one of the shows from the History channel, the book gives its information in descriptive narratives. ýDespite this lack of confidence, Hitler still retained the respect and admiration of the Armyýs rank and file in late 1944 till the end of the war.ý This kind of writing in my opinion is much easier to read than writing with much high frequency words and have to dig through the dictionary to fully understand what the book is about.
Overall reading this book is a success and I enjoyed reading this book very much. Now I have purchased this book and that is one of the signs of my approval of its ý1337nessý. Counted over 190 pictures to help out my reading and that averages out more than one picture per page. Almost a picture book and still provide enough information for me to take the information from the text and process it with efficiency. This book should definitely be published in hardcover and should be a collectorýs must have for Patton enthusiasts.

Michael Green is hands-down the best author I have ever read on this subject. With his array of military books, I just can't seem to get enough of his well-informed and enlightening books. The pictures in this particular book are just astonishing and greatly complement the articulate and intelligent text. Green has once again taken my breath away with this book! I recommend it highly, as I do all of his books. My wife and I both know that they are at the top of my shelf!

Paints a vivid portrait of Carribean women slave life.......2003-11-06

This book is about the role of black women in resistance to slavery in the British Carribean.

The author writes that life in the British Carribean was particularly savage; planters were so busy driving their slaves to make a profit that they didn't have time to formulate any paternalist ideology as happened with slave-owners in the American South. Some of the examples of the evidence presented here is given below.

She notes a large outcry by planters in Trinidad in 1823 when the whipping of female slaves was banned. The planters argued that it was the only effective device for specifically keeping female slaves in line. "One colonial office official stated that female slaves 'more frequently merited punishment than males.'"

She quotes accounts from several planters about the particular insolence of domestic female slaves. Such domestics were often in a worse position than fieldhands for they were under much closer scrutiny of masters and vulnerable to the latter's sexual lecheries and subsequent raging jealousies of the master's wife. Even with benevolent masters as lovers, the slave women would manipulate and steal from them. Such manipulation and stealing by all slaves was seen as evidence of being inherent traits among Africans by people too stupid to comprehend that the slaves might be asserting their own individuality and freedom by this act.

She quotes an account from testimony before the House of Commons in 1790 by one Henry Coor who reported that the owner of a Jamaican plantation where he stayed one night nailed the ear of a domestic slave to a tree post because she had broken a plate. The slave in the morning was found to have wrenched her ear out of this imprisonment and when found was severely whipped. She quotes an account from a Dr. John Williamson who related the story of a slave giving birth after having been confined in the stocks and then dying of a fever.

She quotes accounts from estates owned by two London merchants, Thomas and William King. In one estate she quotes a punishment book that of the 34 slaves punished in the first six months of 1827, 21 were women. She quotes a number of accounts of individual insubordination on an estate of the Kings in what is now Guiana in South America. Even though a slave named Clarrissa had her punishment increased from 12 hours of solitary confinement to 60 hours chained in the stockade, her insubordination did not decrease, writes the author.

She quotes accounts from a liberal planter named Monk Lewis who reported a scene of insubordination at his place where female slaves affected a work slowdown. When an overseer demanded that the women do their duty, one of the latter ran at the former and tried to strangle him. Lewis is quoted on reports of white overseers kicking pregnant black women in their bellies and thereby damaging the child or the mother.

Slave-owners began to enact legislation for their own benefit to ameliorate the harsh treatment of black women, for with slave importation being banned, they were concerned about slave labor not destroying the fertility of women. They also were under pressure from abolitionists. Black women generally received solitary confinement or being chained up in the stocks as opposed to the whippings still delivered on black men. Though the whip on women was still being used. The author quotes an account from a plantation in Grenada in 1823 of a female slave being whipped and again apparently another female being whipped ten years later for destroying sugar canes and "general neglect of duty." She quotes an account from this time of female slave at the plantation of Mrs. Carrie Carmicheal who colored her tongue a different color each check-up to make it seem like she was ill but then her tongue was whipe cleaned to reveal that she had been faking illness to avoid work and she was thus flogged.

She gives accounts of slave women being involved in many rebellions. There is the Jamaican maroon leader Nanny in the 1730's and "Cubah," leader of the slave revolt in Jamaica in 1760. She quotes an account from a rebellion in Surinam in 1730 where 8 of the 11 executed for it were women. Six of the females were "broken alive on the rack" and the other two, youngsters, were decapitated but they had such nerve in facing these atrocities that they "did not utter a sigh." She quotes an account from a male slave under interrogation that the only major uprising on Barbados, which took place in 1816, was formented by a woman She states that from contemporary accounts, women played a big role in the mob actions to protest poor working conditions in St. Kitts in 1834 druing the brief "apprenticeship." She "transition" to emancipation. There were two women in the group of sixteen sentenced for sedition and mutiny in this incident. She quotes an account from an English official during the great uprising of 20,000 slaves in Jamaica in 1831 that women were heavily involved as guides for rebels, as provocateurs to try to cause harm to British forces, and so on.

She gives accounts of how black women were feared because of their knowledge of Obeah herbal formulas that could poison whites and their leadership in African religious ceremonies which could be occasions for plotting rebellion.

She talks alot about the sexual mores of slave women. The planters propagated the notion that black women were inherently inclined towards promiscuity. Contemporary abolitionists agreed that slave women were promiscuous, only arguing that the degradation of slavery made them that way. She goes through an analysis of West African and slave sexual and marriage customs. Many African socities seem to have had a custom of "trial marriage" and divorce was relatively easy to obtain. In marooon communities, according to the author, young women were accorded something like "coming out" parties perhaps similar to those for aristocratic girls in Europe. The author quotes a Barbados parliament report to the House of Commons in 1789 that the black women there were very gentle and virtous. She quotes a Jamaican slave doctor who estimated that black men were no more promiscuous then men in England.....The author concludes that most slave families were monogamous, with strong retention of African extended family structures despite the threat of enforced separation through sales. Polygamy was rather minor and according to accounts, the first wives in such relationships obtained almost equal status with the husbands. She quotes slave-owners accounts of the generous and happy relations among slaves.

She explores the evidence that the low fertility rate among slaves in the West Indies was due to black women killing their babies within nine days after birth or willing their own miscarriage.

The book gets exceedingly slow to read towards the end.....

The Bible on Hiking Shenandoah National Park.......2007-04-02

Someone suggested I purchase this book when I started hiking Shenandoah National Park (SNP) over 20 years ago. I've since purchased and been given other hiking guides to the region but none come close to the practicality and readability of this consummate guide. Most importantly, the balance of detail is perfect -- everything of interest from botanical to historical observations are here without getting lost in the woods. The author loves what he is writing about and it comes through. If summitting "Old Rag" is the best hike in the SNP (and I think it is, although the author opts for the trail up Hogcamp Branch), consider this the "Old Rag" of hiking books. You'll need to buy it used but it will be a long time before it goes out of date.

Best hiking/touring guide ever written.......2006-09-03

One of my (many) peculiarities is that I love to read hiking guides, even for places I've never visited and probably never will. They may appear to be dry tabulations of mileages and directions and features, but in all cases the authors' love of the landscape comes out in some small way or another, and it's fun to catch the authors being personal when they're trying to be dry.

But Henry Heatwole's book is different. Whereas other authors try to hide their personalities, and you have to work hard to catch it as it sneaks out, Heatwole allows his personality to flow out easily yet unobtrusively. His love for the landscape of Shenandoah National Park is tangible and contagious. His love for a thoughtful, considered life is a bit harder to find, but it's there as well. Again it is unobtrusive, but this is in some sense a philosophical guide to living a good life as well as a touring guide to the Skyline Drive and a hiking guide to Shenandoah's many trails.

I recommend this book even to those who will never visit Shenandoah.

"THE" Book On Shenandoah National Park!.......2001-12-01

This book is out of print because the author has passed away and there are (unfortunately)disagreements on updates. Today, one would have to buy at least three hiking books, a general park overview book, a park history book and a few maps just to remotely compare to the information included in *this* book!

Mr. Heatwole provides an enjoyable mile-by-mile overview on the park. Containing incredibly detailed information on trails (hikes by milepost, length, estimated hiking time, elevation changes, etc.), park animals, plants, weather, camping, waterfall heights, geology, mountain range names and more, this is THE book on Shenandoah National Park!!

Perfect of its type.......2000-05-01

The late author not only knew and loved the trails of S.N. Park intimately; he had the rare gift of organizing his material for maximum usefulness to the reader. A vast amount of information is in the book, yet none of it superfluous, and it never overwhelms. The author wrote with an understated charm reminiscent of Frost's New England characters. Some of the book's facts are obsolete, but only a very few. The guide is not merely descriptive, but charitably evaluative, thus doubling its unsefulness. Any who love the Park and its trails will surely treasure this book; it has no equal or replacement.
