Frank J. Fabozzi (New Hope, PA) is a financial consultant, the Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management, and an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Yale Universitys School of Management.

Steven V. Mann (Columbia, SC) is Professor of Finance at the Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina. Moorad Choudhry (Surrey, UK) is a Vice President with JPMorgan Chase structured finance services in London.

Moorad Choudhry (Surrey, England) is a senior Fellow at the Centre for Mathematical Trading and Finance, CASS Business School, London, and is Editor of the Journal of Bond Trading and Management. He has authored a number of books on fixed income analysis and the capital markets. Moorad began his City career with ABN Amro Hoare Govett Sterling Bonds Limited, where he worked as a gilt-edged market maker, and Hambros Bank Limited where he was a sterling proprietary trader. This book provides a thorough view of purchasing strategies and strategic purchasing. It emphasizes the need for support from the top as well as established purchasing guidelines.

It's primary benefit comes from a thorough explanation of strategic purchasing. How to determine a need, determine the possibility of seclecting one (or more) suppliers to fill that need and how to use your position as a buyer to create the type of supplier that YOU need. It also highlights the need for "upstream" planning to avoid the pitfalls that often result from unplanned purchasing.

This book contains an overview of the most relevant scientific contributions of Gerard de Josselin de Jong to the development of both Soil Mechanics and Transport in Porous Media. The volume comprises a selection of papers by de Josselin de Jong as they were published in the international scientific literature. In addition, some unpublished, but highly relevant work has been included.

Most of the papers by de Josselin de Jong are concerned with issues related to soil mechanics. This is not surprising, considering the fact that he worked at Delft Soil Mechanics Laboratory and given the nature of his chair at Delft University of Technology. But occasionally he made an excursion to the area of flow and transport in porous media. It characterizes his ingenuity that most of these excursions led to papers that are now classics in the field.

The editors have chosen to divide his key publications into a group devoted to soil mechanics and a group devoted to flow and transport in porous media. The selected papers were published in the period 1950-1990. They clearly demonstrate the development of ideas and the profound contributions of de Josselin de Jong. Each paper is a jewel on its own. He has an extremely original way of reasoning and he illustrated intricate concepts and mechanisms with the aid of his famous hand-made drawings. As the title indicates, the Army's Command & General Staff College requires students to read Patterns of War in the core history class. Professors can make best use of this book as a supplement to a more thorough analysis into military history. Addington surveys the history of warfare from the evolution of national warfare in France and the U.S. in the late 1700's to operations in Desert Storm.

This book will not provide a lot of depth or analysis, simply the basic facts and a good list of sources from which to perform further research. If a student or enthusiast of history, use Patterns of War to gain a cursory understanding of many of the conflicts in the last two centuries. Or, use it as a basis to launch into further study and learning. Addington provides a respectable review of the development of 200 years of war.

An abbreviated review of military history spanning roughly the last two and a half centuries. Despite the promise of the title, there is little effort spent on the implications of evolution of military thought and technology on the actual practice of waging war.

A Great Book by a Great Professor.......1998-01-14

An outstanding work that can be turned to time and time again. Addington does a great job of consolidating a lengthy period of time into an easy read. I have used the book for research sources for several papers and studies. I studied under him as an under-grad at The Citadel and took his class. The book is well though out and well researched, a great reference.

This book was great for my young preschoolers. The true photos were fantastic, and the simple vocabulary was still very informational. The book was too long to read to my 4 year olds in one sitting. However, it is divided into sections that are easily read two or three at a time. This book has many true close up pictures of insects in all stages of its life cycle.
