          Book Description

The use of insect pheromones in pest management is a rapidly growing field of research and practice in the agricultural and urban environments. An understanding of this area requires knowledge of both chemistry and biology to a depth, which can cause frustration in even the most experienced researchers. Insect Pheromones and their Use in Pest Management overcomes such difficulties by providing a rounded perspective, assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge of the disciplines involved.
This book is aimed primarily at students of pest management who have reached the upper level of their undergraduate studies or are embarking on a Master's level course or a research programme. The book has been purposefully organised into three parts, each written by a different author who brings his own focus and perspective to this interdisciplinary field.
Insect Pheromones and their Use in Pest Management offers the reader a well-rounded introduction to this branch of chemical ecology. A comprehensive reference list gives students a sound point-of-entry to the literature and all topics covered are thoroughly illustrated.

            Book Description

Winner of the 2005 Pfizer Prize from the History of Science Society.

What actually took place in the private laboratory of a mid-seventeenth century alchemist? How did he direct his quest after the secrets of Nature? What instruments and theoretical principles did he employ?

Using, as their guide, the previously misunderstood interactions between Robert Boyle, widely known as "the father of chemistry," and George Starkey, an alchemist and the most prominent American scientific writer before Benjamin Franklin as their guide, Newman and Principe reveal the hitherto hidden laboratory operations of a famous alchemist and argue that many of the principles and practices characteristic of modern chemistry derive from alchemy. By analyzing Starkey's extraordinary laboratory notebooks, the authors show how this American "chymist" translated the wildly figurative writings of traditional alchemy into quantitative, carefully reasoned laboratory practice—and then encoded his own work in allegorical, secretive treatises under the name of Eirenaeus Philalethes. The intriguing "mystic" Joan Baptista Van Helmont—a favorite of Starkey, Boyle, and even of Lavoisier—emerges from this study as a surprisingly central figure in seventeenth-century "chymistry." A common emphasis on quantification, material production, and analysis/synthesis, the authors argue, illustrates a continuity of goals and practices from late medieval alchemy down to and beyond the Chemical Revolution.

For anyone who wants to understand how alchemy was actually practiced during the Scientific Revolution and what it contributed to the development of modern chemistry, Alchemy Tried in the Fire will be a veritable philosopher's stone.

                        Book Description

This book presents a state-of-the-art scientific overview of the influence of terrestrial vegetation and soils within the Earth system. It deals especially with interactions between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere via the hydrological cycle and their interlinkage with anthropogenic activities. Measurements gathered in integrated field experiments in the Sahel, the Amazon, North America and South-east Asia confirm the importance of these interactions, but a substantial data consolidation effort still needs to be undertaken. Observations are complemented by modelling studies, including regional models that simulate flows and transport in river catchments, coupled land-cover and regional climate systems, and Earth-system and global circulation models. Water, nutrient and sediment fluxes in river basins are also discussed and are shown to be highly impacted and regulated by humans through land use, pollution and river engineering. Finally, the book discusses environmental vulnerability and methodologies for assessing the risks associated with regional and global climatic and environmental variability and change. The editors emphasise that the results reported in this book are based on the research work of many individual scientists and teams around the world associated with the objectives of the IGBP-BAHC and WCRP-GEWEX international research programmes.

                          Book Description

Global climate change - rapid, substantial and human induced - may have radical consequences for life on earth. The problem is a complex one, however, demanding a multi-disciplinary approach. A simple cost-benefit analysis cannot capture the essentials, nor can the issue be reduced to an emissions reduction game, as the Kyoto process tries to do. It is much more sensible to adopt an integrative approach, which reveals that global climate change needs to be considered as a spider in a web, a triggering factor for a range of other, related problems - land use changes, water supply and demand, food supply, energy supply, human health, air pollution, etc. But an approach like this, which takes account of all items of knowledge, known and uncertain, does not produce clear-cut, final and popular answers. It does provide useful insights, however, which will allow comprehensive and effective long-term climate strategies to be put into effect.
Climate Change: An Integrated Perspective will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. It is a useful source for the climate-change professionals, such as policy makers and analysts, natural and social scientists. It is also suitable for educationalists, students and indeed anyone interested in the fascinating world of multidisciplinary research underlying our approach to this global change issue.

                            Book Description

The author applies methods of nonlinear elasticity to investigate the defects in the crystal structure of solids such as dislocations and disclinations that characterize the plastic and strength properties of many materials. Contrary to the geometrically motivated nonlinear theory of dislocations continuously distributed over the body, nonlinear analysis of isolated dislocations and disclinations is less developed; it is given for the first time in this book, and in a form accessible to both students and researchers. The general theory of Volterra's dislocations in elastic media under large deformations is developed. A number of exact solutions are found. The nonlinear approach to investigating the isolated defects produces results that often differ qualitatively from those of the linear theory.

                            Book Description

Around AD 1450 a new Mexican nation emerged called the Aztec Empire of the Triple Alliance. They succeeded in making themselves the most powerful and feared civilisation in the Americas. The Mixtec and Zapotec peoples were contemporaries of the Aztec nations, and both formed alliances and fought many wars against them. With Angus McBride's usual quality artwork on eight full page colour plates, plus plenty of other illustrations from various sources, this work by John Pohl investigates the history, uniforms and weaponry of Aztec, Mixtec and Zapotec armies.

                            5 out of 5 stars Mexica Warriors.......2007-04-08

Informative text (that hardly even speaks of the Spaniards-thus making this truly a book about the Mexica and their contemporaries) and good plates by McBride, but the names and terminology in the Mexica language really go over my head. The Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, two minor warring peoples, also receive some brief mention.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! You could look for more information, though........2007-03-10

The book has good information on weapons, armies and Mesoamerican warfare in general. It has got beautiful and quite accurate drawings of several of the uniforms and outfits ancient Mexicans wore.

Just a piece of advice: if you are an Aztec history enthusiast, I HUGELY recommend looking for some Mexican authors, who have tried to clear some myths and erratic common beliefs about this culture. They have a vision of the Aztecs not through European-minded eyes. Pablo Moctezuma Barragan, Miguel de Leon-Portilla and Ignacio Romerovargas are good examples. Be warned however, that these authors may display too much nationalism in their texts. All in all, when reading ANYTHING about Prehispanic American civilizations, it is recommended to be critical and apply your own criteria.

This is a great book, highly suitable for anyone with an interest of knowing a little about how a really important region of America was like before Spain arrived.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and detailed.......2005-10-17

Mesoamerican history can often be confusing. The ally of one day quickly became the enemy of the next. This book was somehow able to cut through that without sacrificing any of the detail. The end result is a very solid and informative account of these warriors and the wars they fought in.

5 out of 5 stars One of Ospreys Better efforts.......2005-06-16

Hey! Its got McBride doing the illustrations and it has some really good text to boot. That and it covers more than just the Aztecs but some of the lessor known tribes of Meso America.
                            Well done to all concerned!

                            5 out of 5 stars A cut-above Osprey title.......2002-08-09

This Men-at-Arms title is a cut above the rest. The text and the illustrations are actually on par with each other! Osprey seems to be in the constant process of revamping their line. This one is a step in the right direction. Not only are the ever popular Aztecs examined, the author also delves into the relatively ignored tribal alliances that they fought with over Mesoamerica. The subject was previously examined in another Osprey title, The Conquistadores (MAA 101 ) by Terence Wise. I recommend both, together. The disparity between Mexican and European styles of warfare will become readily apparent. I find myself rooting for the Aztecs, oddly enough... Both contain Angus Mcbride's wonderful paintings. You can't beat a dancing priest clad in human skin or an elite cuachic warrior with a mohawk! Usual complaints: the maps are damn near useless...

A study of the "myth of Fascism," this book offers a detailed critique of historical accounts of Mussolini and his regime, including writings from 1917 to 1997. Bosworth reviews Fascist, conservative, liberal, and Marxist interpretations of Fascism, and provides insight into the social history of dictatorship and its cultural legacy. This careful inquiry skillfully probes the key debates surrounding Fascism.

I borrowed this book from a friend - picked it up and couldn't put it down. Stewart paints with words as he incorporates science into his poetry. However, he writes of more than science; he writes about relationships, love, death, and nature. Science is merely a facet of his life as it is with many other people including engineers and scientists. His ability to incorporate it seamlessly into his poetry is at once beautiful and astounding. If you like poetry, even if you have no knowledge of science, you will enjoy and love the beauty in these words. And if you like science and have always wanted to enjoy a bit more of art, you will enjoy this book as well.

                              Book Description

When the first field study of the Florida panther took place in 1973, so little was known about the animal that many scientists believed it was already extinct. During more extensive research conducted from 1981 to 1986, panthers were proven to exist, but the handful of senile, anemic, and parasite-infested specimens that were captured indicated a grim future. During those early years a remarkably enduring image of the panther was born, and despite voluminous data gathered over the next decade that showed the panther to be healthy, long-lived, and reproducing, that earlier image has yet to be dispelled.

For nine years, biologist David S. Maehr served as project leader of the Florida Panther Study Project, helping to gather much of the later, surprisingly positive data. In The Florida Panther , he presents the first detailed portrait of the animal-its biology, natural history, and current status-and a realistic assessment of its prospects for survival.

Maehr also provides an intriguing look at the life and work of a field biologist: how captures are made, the intricacies of radio-telemetry tracking, the roles of various team members. He describes the devastating intrusion of politics into scientific work, as he discusses the widespread problems caused by the failure of remote and ill-informed managers to provide needed support and to communicate effectively to the public the goals and accomplishments of the scientists. He examines controversial efforts to establish a captive breeding program and to manipulate the Florida panther's genetic stock with the introduction of relatives from west Texas.

Protection of high-quality habitat, much of it in the hands of private landowners, is the key to the long-term survival of the Florida panther. Unless agency decision makers and the public are aware of the panther's true situation, little can be done to save it. This book will play a vital role in correcting widespread misconceptions about the panther's current condition and threats to its survival.

                              Dear readers,

Today morning before leaving for work i happen to watch National geographic channel wherein there was one hour programe on Florida panther. It's survival seems to be highly endangered due to the fact that their genetic poll being limited and in-breeding among the cats inevitable it gives a very tragic case of survival. I being an avid wildlife enthsiast from India hope that American people will defenitely do something for the survival of Florida panther.

                              Thanks
