Book Description

Ninety percent of companies in the United States qualify as small businesses. Every day these employers have to deal with common computing problems, such as tracking electronic documents, scheduling, accounting functions, managing contact lists, and reducing spam. Many expensive software products are available to help solve these problems, but they often have features small businesses don't need (or are missing the ones they do). Open source software presents easy-to-implement solutions at a fraction of the cost. Unfortunately, these solutions are relatively unknown to most small businesses. Open Source Solutions for Small Business Problems explores operational problems most small businesses share. It identifies good open source software that can help businesses solve these problems, and compares them to their proprietary counterparts. The strengths and weaknesses of the open source packages are discussed, and additional information is included on how to integrate open source with existing proprietary systems to achieve specific goals. This is the perfect reference for the tech professional looking for help choosing and understanding excellent open source software to deploy in a business setting, as well as for small business proprietors interested in streamlining their business problems using computer-based solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Required for businesses considering switching to Linux.......2004-07-15

In the world of open source there is a plethora of books on installing and administering Linux. There are also many technical books available on setting up a web server or other specific areas of Linux. This book fills a very broad gap for the non-technical person who wants to know about open source products and how they can be beneficial to your needs. This is not a technical manual but a guide that gives a higher-level view of what the software can do and how to use it.

It includes information on obtaining and installing Mandrake Linux (but no troubleshooting if you have a problem), setting up an office network, setting up an email server, setting up a web server, customer relationship management, calendar and schedule management, document management, accounting, project management, security, and just about everything you need to know to setup and run your business on an open source solution.

Perhaps the best way to provide an indication of this book's perspective is to look at a specific chapter. One of the best ones for this purpose is the one on setting up a web server. The first thing addressed is why you need a web server in the first place. This is followed by an examination of the most common open source web server - Apache. It then provides enough information to understand some of the basics of configuration. This allows you to understand what the configuration files do and get a server up and running, but not enough information to actually configure a secure server.

So, what makes this book so unique that I would recommend it to anyone? It meets the needs of the manager in that it is general enough that someone who has no knowledge of Linux can understand what is going on and what to expect of an installation. Yet it also meets the needs of the technical Linux user who understands the details of all the configuration files but often does not have an overall view of what the complete system is supposed to do. For example, it gives a short conceptual view of Perl that is sufficient to let the reader know if it is something that they could use but provides no information on how to program it. Then again, there are many, many books on Perl programming available.

"Open Source Solutions for Small Business Problems" is a very highly recommended book for anyone who is looking at the open source market and particularly anyone considering Linux as an operating system of choice either on the desktop or as a server. This is easily one of the best Linux books of the year; providing a management level view of the Linux world without the technical focus of other books.

5 out of 5 stars A unique mix of business and technical information..........2004-06-29

I just finished a rather interesting and different book on Open Source Software. The title is Open Source Solutions for Small Business Problems by John Locke (Charles River Media). The author contacted me and asked if I'd like to review the book, and I accepted. Since this is an area which is grabbing more of my interest these days, it was helpful in many ways...

First, the chapter layout:
Part 1 - Small Business Computing Infrastructure - Open Source Software in Your Small Business; Why You Need A Server; Setting Up Your Office Network; Open Source on the Desktop; Setting Up an Email Server; Setting Up a Web Server
Part 2 - Computing Your Business Operations - Customer Relationship Management; Calendar and Schedule Management; Document Management; Financial Management; Managing Resources, Schedules, and Projects
Part 3 - Extending Your Business With Open Source - Sharing Information with Your Partners; Marketing Your Message; Connect from Offsite; Providing Private Communications
Part 4 - Keeping Your Network Secure and Intact - Securing Business Data; Network Security in a Wireless World; Disaster Recovery; Viruses and Spam
Appendices - The Open Source Definition; Basics Of Networking; Common Open Source Licenses

When I first started reading it, I was expecting something non-technical in nature, something that would be targeted for the average business owner that knows s/he wants to spend less on software and is looking for alternatives. And to be sure, the book does deliver to that group. But there are also chapters (or areas within each chapter) where the content gets pretty technical. For instance, the detail on how to set up a web server isn't for the person who simply wants to turn on their computer and go. These areas are going to appeal to the in-house technical support person who's been charged with making it all work. While you could (and probably should) find whole books on many of these topics, there's enough detail to get you started in the right direction.

I think Part 2 is extremely valuable, in that it helps both the business owner and the techie figure out what's available in terms of open source alternatives to the typical business software. You learn about OpenOffice.org as a replacement to Microsoft's Office. You learn about MySQL as an alternative to Microsoft Access or many other more expensive relational database systems. You'd be able to find all this out if you dug around on the web long enough, but the author packages up the information in a single location and helps you start to understand what's available for you.

There's also a CD in the back of the book that contains many of the open source packages discussed in the book. Being that these packages move pretty quickly as far as release cycles go, I think I'd prefer visit the web site for the specific package and download the latest. Still, if you're wanting something quick, you'll have it on the CD.

At first, the mix of technical and non-technical content in each chapter didn't quite set right. I wanted the book to target one or the other. But the longer I read, the more I liked the fact that the book could serve as a single volume to allow both the tech and non-tech sides of a business to come together on common ground. The non-techies can ignore the parts that are over their heads, but still understand the possibilities. The techies will understand where the business is coming from, and will get a good start on implementing the software. As a result, I give this book high marks for anyone wanting to some or all of their business computing to an open source model.

While it's unclear which part of Small Business Solutions for Windows 2000 Professional is of particular interest to people who run small businesses, there's no doubt that this book provides a solid introduction to Microsoft's latest workstation operating system as it applies to small LANs, dial-up Internet access, and standalone application use. This makes it a super how-to guide for small offices, home offices, and even home LANs for family use.

Though you'll find step-by-step procedures in this book, of greater value are the explanations of conceptual matters, such as defining Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Snap-In and describing how to design a good network from the ground up. This approach works well for people who are moving directly to Windows 2000 (and its networking capabilities) from Windows 98 in a standalone configuration. The book takes special care to describe features (such as Internet Connection Sharing) that could save organizations money and time and devotes extra time to the administration tools and procedures fledgling system administrators have to understand. Read this book before you switch to Windows 2000, and keep it on hand during and after installation. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, as it applies to someone who will both use and administer it. The book gives detailed help on setting up the operating system, configuring hardware, establishing accounts and other security measures, adding Internet connectivity, and working with small LANs.

This expert, solutions-focused guide shows readers how to run their small business or home office operations on the technical backbone of Microsoft(r) Windows 2000 Professional, the desktop operating system that integrates the best usability, performance, and security features of Windows 98 and Windows NT(r) Workstation. The book provides concise instruction for setting up and configuring Windows 2000 Professional for both standalone computers and networked environments, with just enough conceptual overview to glean the business benefits of the technology. It also describes the most common scenarios for small businesses using Windows 2000 Professional, including straight-from-the-source advice on how to optimize the system so users work more productively from desktop to Web.

Book Description

Conducting "business as usual" is out of step with today's rapid-fire, global economy. Velocity Management in Logistics and Distribution: Lessons from the Military to Secure the Speed of Business alerts commerce to the new reality that it must be more flexible and responsive in managing the unpredictability of its environment, particularly when it comes to the supply chain process. This comprehensive resource explains how to successfully migrate towards velocity management, which espouses replacing traditional reliance on mass quantities of inventory with receiving what is needed when it is needed - providing businesses with the ability to rapidly meet customers' ever-changing requirements. The velocity management paradigm is based on the highly successful example set by the United States Army, as illustrated by the author, a renowned speaker and retired colonel with more than 26 years of supply chain and leadership experience. He explains how the Army went from being mired in a mammoth, archaic, Cold War logistics infrastructure to achieving a lean, agile, world-class supply chain network. Chapters detail how this transition can be accomplished in the business arena. They relay aspects essential to achieving a successful supply chain: maintaining security, achieving velocity, and applying military theories, practices, and lessons learned. This invaluable and timely reference concludes with a summary of key themes and their relevant application to modern supply chains.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Secure the Infrastructure to Speed the Delivery.......2006-01-17

As supply chain networks become more global in their market reach and outsourced supply, it becomes critical to learn how to secure network logistics and distribution. Colonel Joe Walden gives us a fascinating perspective from the military in Velocity Management in Logistics and Distribution. Colonel Walden's hands-on experience, most recently in Iraq, is relevant to commercial supply chain operations in today's Low Cost Countries like areas of China and Eastern Europe where secure, fast logistics and distribution infrastructure are sometimes lacking.

This book covers topics in risk assessment, risk management, and the classification of threats to security. It then presents practical methods for professional development in supply chain staffing followed by supply chain leadership learnings from the ancient writings of Sun Tzu through Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. I have used the After Action Review from this book to critique an inventory reduction project, and have found the risk assessment checklists from this book useful during a corporate disaster recovery planning audit.

        Book Description

The study of sedimentary chemistry and its associated processes is becoming increasingly mathematical. There is a growing desire to gain a quantitative understand of the reasons for the natural chemical changes observed in sediments as they are buried. Past textbooks have not emphasized the steps necessary to develop transport-reaction (diagenetic) models themselves nor methods for their solution. This book attempts to present a detailed account of model formulation by explaining some useful solution techniques. The choice of material illustrates methods that are simple to understand and implement, yet powerful enough to attack even the most complicated diagenetic problems. The cited computer programs are accessible on the Internet.

              Book Description

December 7, 1941 was one of the single most decisive days of World War II - the day that brought the USA into the fight. Six Japanese aircraft carriers disgorged their full complements in two waves on the superior US Pacific Fleet as it lay slumbering in Pearl Harbor. Depending on opposing viewpoints, the attack was either a brilliant maneuver of audacious strategy, or a piece of unparalleled villainy and deception by a supposedly friendly power. This revised edition, containing the latest research on the events of December 7, 1941, reveals several previously unknown aspects of the attack and dispels key myths that have been built up around the fateful day - a day, Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared, that would "live in infamy".

For most people (including most American military people) Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 is a far away island and a long time ago. To those in the American intelligence community, Pearl Harbor was the definition of being asleep at the switch-9/11 has replaced Pearl Harbor as the yardstick of intelligence failure. Carl Smith's "Pearl Harbor 1941" tells one part of Japan's "southern operation"-and provides a context for that "Day of Infamy" with background information and a thumbnail history.

I was stationed at the Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Air Station from September 1976 to June 1979 (with a brief eight-month cruise aboard the LPH-10 Tripoli), I spent some time as an Army intelligence analyst, and I last toured the Pearl Harbor monument and visitors' center on Oahu around Easter in 1998. Pearl Harbor Day is very real to me even though I was born fifteen years after the Japanese raid occurred.

Carl Smith hints at the complexity of the period immediately preceding Pearl Harbor Day. Some of my research into the events leading up to December 7 differ from the author's, but that's history! History is a "best guess" based on available information. I'm unqualified to determine if some of the variance between my limited work and Carl Smith's are due to error. One thing stands out in my mind because I work with 24-hour time globally-Pearl Harbor Day in Japan is December 8. Earth is divided into 24 time zones due to rotation-sunrise is at different times in Honolulu and Manila and Tokyo. I am unsure when I read Smith's timeline which time zone the event happened in. My research indicates that the United States expected to be attacked at any moment, but that attack would happen in the Philippines first. Smith's bibliography should prove useful to the amateur historian-I've read about 60% of the books he listed, and I own several.

The best part of "Pearl Harbor 1941" are the maps and many illustrations that set the scene and describe the sequence of events on 7 December 1941. Carl Smith's "Pearl Harbor 1941" has a place in my Pearl Harbor library. Pearl Harbor didn't happen in a vacuum-it was part of a sequence of events beginning in 1855 and continuing today. For me, at least, Pearl Harbor 1941 isn't long ago on a far away island.

3 out of 5 stars A Decent, if Flawed Summary.......2001-08-23

Pearl Harbor 1941 is graphically very appealing. If one ignores the first 35 pages and the final few pages, one might even call this an excellent summary. For readers with only a general interest in the Pearl Harbor attack, this volume will suffice, but historians will probably only appreciate the excellent maps and order of battle information. Particularly troubling, given the immense primary and secondary sources available on this subject, is the author's tendency toward misleading and erroneous facts.

The opening introduction and background section is totally inadequate. While the author takes time to mention Hawaii's historical background, he makes less effort to paint the immediate causes of the attack. There is no mention of either the Chinese invasion of China in 1937 that led to the deterioration of US-Japanese relations or the Russo-Japanese border fighting in 1939-40 that shaped Japanese strategic conceptions away from further Eurasian entanglements. The statement that the "US Pacific Fleet was a deterrent" is misleading; that was how FDR viewed it, not the Japanese, who saw it as a threat to their expansionist ambitions in the Pacific. Even Admiral Kimmel, who commanded the Pacific Fleet, felt wholesale transfers of men and vessels to the Atlantic undermined its deterrence value.

The section on opposing commanders is more than a bit rambling and has odd choices of individuals, some of whom were not military commanders involved directly in the campaign. The US section has Kimmel, Short, Stark, Marshall, Hull and FDR. The Japanese section has Yamamoto, Fuchida, Genda, Nagumo and Nomura. Certainly politicians and diplomats such as FDR, Hull and Nomura do not belong here. Noticeably absent are the US air commanders in Hawaii, Bloch and Martin, who certainly bore some responsibility for the defeat. The entry for Nagumo is misleading, implying that he committed suicide at Saigon in 1944 "when the inevitable result of the war became clear." Instead, Nagumo was commander of the naval base on Saipan and committed suicide when US troops overran the island. The entry for Yamamoto that claims he was, "a man who fought but wanted peace" is nauseating. Just what did he ever do for peace? The chronology section, although detailed, is also marked with misleading or erroneous entries, further complicated by the fact that the author does not specify what time zone he is using. For example, he states that the Japanese fleet sailed on 25 November, but local time was actually 26 November. The crucial 27 November "war warning" is falsely delivered as advising Kimmel and Short that negotiations had failed and to "be prepared for any eventuality." It said no such thing.

Although there is a section on the Japanese attack plan, there is no section on US defensive plans or the Rainbow War Plan. The author should have mentioned the Martin-Bellinger studied which addressed the vulnerability of Oahu to air attack. In the Japanese section, there is no mention of the vociferous opposition to the raid and how Yamamoto had to threaten resigning in order to get the operation approved. The whole approach to Japan's strategy is euphemistic: "Japan expanded into Asia..."and the US "thwarted every Japanese attempt to extend Asian influence," instead of, the US sought to contain Japanese aggression. There are many other errors in this section, some so mundane, like claiming that the Japanese task force sailed from "Tankan Bay" instead of Hittokappu bay, that it is a wonder that the author even bothered to peruse secondary sources.

Amazingly, the sections on the actual attack are quite good. To be fair, they are better than Gordon Prange provides in his long-winded At Dawn We Slept. Smith provides excellent maps and graphics for the attacks on each air base and the naval facilities, as well as a decent textual summary. Three-D maps are provided for the first and second wave attacks, as well as the attack on Hickam Field. There is even a map depicting US naval movements in Pearl during the attack, which is most unusual. Several excellent illustrations and many photos complement the text. Overall, these 36 pages that cover the attack (one more page than Prange) are excellent.

Unfortunately, in the aftermath section the author reverts to his misleading tendencies. He claims "all eight [US] battleships [were] sunk or heavily damaged," which is totally wrong. The USS Maryland and Pennsylvania were only slightly damaged and soon available for service, USS Tennessee was moderately damaged. His follow-up conclusions are overly generalized and ignore the immediate affects of the raid.

Overall, this a handy, colorful summary volume, but it should not be used as a substitute for serious history. Unfortunately, the author has taken far too many liberties with the historical record for this to be considered a reliable summary.

5 out of 5 stars Pearl Harbor 1941.......2000-04-12

An excellent review for the novice as well as the reader well read about the Pearl Harbor attack. Maps and diagrams reveal the placement of each aircraft and ship. This book also does a good job about detailing how severe this battle hurt the US military. Shocking to realize how little strength the US had in the Pacific on Dec. 8, 1941. Highly recommended.

Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur was the first Mughal, or Mongol, emperor of India. A devoted warrior who fought by the bloodthirsty standards of his time, Babur was also a gifted scholar and ethnographer, and his memoir, The Baburnama--which translator and editor Wheeler Thackston heralds as the first autobiography in Islamic literature--paints a fascinating portrait of the lands he conquered, such as Hindustan: "A strange country. Compared to ours, it is another world. Its mountains, rivers, forests, and wildernesses, its villages and provinces, animals and plants, peoples and languages, even its rain and winds are altogether different." They were different indeed, and we're fortunate to have this beautifully illustrated record of Babur's wonderment at the new places he saw.

              Book Description

Both an official chronicle and the highly personal memoir of the emperor Babur (1483–1530), The Baburnama presents a vivid and extraordinarily detailed picture of life in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India during the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. Babur’s honest and intimate chronicle is the first autobiography in Islamic literature, written at a time when there was no historical precedent for a personal narrative—now in a sparkling new translation by Islamic scholar Wheeler Thackston.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Experience.......2006-10-30

I think reading this book is an experience in itself. Its remarkable how similar we all are in basic high level thinking even though we might be centuries apart. Of course a emperror's biography going through smallest of details is very interesting. The preface by Salman Rushdie is an insult to such a great book. I believe he shouldnt have been chosen for it. But other than that I found the information in this book vital to undertstand the present culture, thinking and lifestyle in India. I am myself a proud Mughal and having this book in my possession is a pride in itself.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-01-22

              The book itself is excellent.

I had problems with Salman Rushdie's preface, however. It is not a bad introduction, but some of his comments seem to be flawed. The writer explains the contradictory aspect of Babur's psychology (both ruthless/aggressive and soft/cultured) as the outcome of two conflicting "aspects" within Islam. Mr Rushdie does not explain how he arrives at this conclusion, however, and he fails to mention the possibility that Babur's aggression might have naturally stemmed from his Mongol background & warrior instincts. In addition, in the 2nd last paragraph, Rushdie seems to contradict himself when he compares Babur to Machiavelli: "In both men, a cold appreciation of the necessities of power, of what today would be called realpolitik, is combined with deeply cultured and literary nature, not to mention the love, of excess, of wine and women."

              5 out of 5 stars A World Classic.......2002-11-29

I would compare this extraordinary memoir by an extraordinary man to The Tale of Genji - both of them are "firsts" in their culture. The descendants of Tamerlane were both ruthlessly crafty Central Asian kings and warriors, and ultra refined conoisseurs of art and architecture, poetry, food, gardens, and (alas for them) wine. The Baburnama has it all. To encounter the private thoughts of a great conquerer is a unique experience. The Baburnama is well-written and well translated. It is one of the great treasures of literature, and will give the reader a much better idea why Afghanistan and Central Asia are the way they are.

              5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2002-10-27

Babur, a descendant of both Timur and Genghis Khan, was a truly remarkable man: a soldier and a poet, an inspirational leader with a deep appreciation for the beauties of nature - and a sensitivity that seems striking to us in a warrior of his undoubted stature.

His memoirs are a detailed, entertaining, and highly personal view of a changing world. In leading his followers into northern India, he laid the groundwork for the Mughal Empire, one of the great Islamic powers of the early modern period - and it is this achievement that history primarily remembers him for. Yet the _Baburnama_ shows that there is considerably more to the story than its conclusion.

With unstinting and engaging honesty, Babur talks of his early struggles, his constant setbacks, and his lifelong desire to hold Samarkand, glorious seat of his ancestor Timur (Tamerlane). For Babur, India is only the consolation prize after his failure to reconquer the lands of his birthright; India is rich, yes, astoundingly so, but it is far removed from his fond reminiscences of home. Along the way, reports of skirmishes with his enemies, and the constant betrayals of his allies, share the page with descriptions of local flora and fauna, and fascinating observations on everyday life in the cities and towns that he spends time at - and it is here that the work's true enjoyment lies.

Bear with the initially confusing internecine squabbles of the Central Asian nomads, and you'll be richly rewarded. A comprehensive and compelling insight into both Central Asia at the turn of the sixteenth century, and the day-to-day pressures inherent in the leadership of an empire based on conquest.

              5 out of 5 stars A True King.......2000-09-06

Babur was a king in the true sense of the word. His autobiography outlines his feirceness as a warrior as well as his compassion toward the people in his court. Although he lived in a time where one would think there would be little time for introspection, this is exactely what his narrative is: and introspective look at his own life, his shortcomings, his downfalls, his triumphs and tragedies. One is touched by Babur's humbleness, his sensitivity towards some of the most simple of things, and at his sense of awe and appreciation of beauty in the world around him. Although in some ways I prefered the AS Beveridge translation, this is also a wonderful translation with beautiful pictures and notes in the margins to help explain things. Even if you are not normally interested in this type of book, Babur leads you into his world and you are compelled to read on!
