Handbook of Near-Infrared Analysis, Second Edition (Practical Spectroscopy)
ASIN: 3527301496 |
Book Description
Over the last few years, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has rapidly developed into an important and extremely useful method of analysis. In fact, for certain research areas and applications, ranging from material science via chemistry to life sciences, it has become an indispensable tool because this fast and cost-effective type of spectroscopy provides qualitative and quantitative information not available from any other technique.
This book offers a balanced overview of the fundamental theory and instrumentation of NIR spectroscopy, introducing the material in a readily comprehensible manner. A considerable part of the text is dedicated to practical applications, including sample preparation and investigations of polymers, textiles, drugs, food and animal feed. However, special topics, such as two-dimensional correlation analysis, are also covered in separate chapters.
Written by eight experts in different fields, this book presents an introduction to the current state of developments and is valuable to spectroscopists and to practitioners applying NIR spectroscopy as a daily analytical tool.

Book Description
This book presents, for the first time, a systematic formulation of the geometric theory of noncommutative PDE's which is suitable enough to be used for a mathematical description of quantum dynamics and quantum field theory. A geometric theory of supersymmetric quantum PDE's is also considered, in order to describe quantum supergravity. Covariant and canonical quantizations of (super) PDE's are shown to be founded on the geometric theory of PDE's and to produce quantum (super) PDE's by means of functors from the category of commutative (super) PDE's to the category of quantum (super) PDE's. Global properties of solutions to (super) (commutative) PDE's are obtained by means of their integral bordism groups.

"Well-argued and documented"
Berkshire Eagle
"The image is ingrained: A Vietnam veteran, arriving home from the war, gets off a plane only to be greeted by an angry mob of antiwar protesters yelling, 'Murderer!' and 'Baby killer!' Then out of the crowd comes someone who spits in the veteran's face. The only problem, according to Jerry Lembcke, is that no such incident ever has been documented. It is instead, says Lembcke,a kind of urban myth that reflects our lingering national confusion over the war."
Los Angeles Times
"The myth of the spat-upon veteran is not only bad history, but it has been instrumental in selling the American public on bad policy."
Maurice Isserman, Chicago Tribune
"The best history I have seen on the impact of the war onAmericans, both then and now."
David Dellinger
"Lembcke builds a compelling case against collective memory by demonstrating that remembrances of Vietnam were almost at direct odds with circumstantial evidence."
San Francisco Chronicle
One of the most resilient images of the Vietnam era is that of the anti-war protester often a woman spitting on the uniformed veteran just off the plane. The lingering potency of this icon was evident during the Gulf War, when war supporters invoked it to discredit their opposition.
In this startling book, Jerry Lembcke demonstrates that not a single incident of this sort has been convincingly documented. Rather, the anti-war Left saw in veterans a natural ally, and the relationship between anti-war forces and most veterans was defined by mutual support. Indeed one soldier wrote angrily to Vice President Spiro Agnew that the only Americans who seemed concerned about the soldier's welfare were the anti-war activists.
While the veterans were sometimes made to feel uncomfortable about their service, this sense of unease was, Lembcke argues, more often rooted in the political practices of the Right. Tracing a range of conflicts in the twentieth century, the book illustrates how regimes engaged in unpopular conflicts often vilify their domestic opponents for "stabbing the boys in the back."
Concluding with an account of the powerful role played by Hollywood in cementing the myth of the betrayed veteran through such films as Coming Home, Taxi Driver, and Rambo, Jerry Lembcke's book stands as one of the most important, original, and controversial works of cultural history in recent years.
Customer Reviews:
living proof.......2007-09-03
First, I sympathize with much of what Jerry says about the right using Vietnam veteran's homecoming treatment to justify not speaking out against war and warriors (flag officers). My heroes of the Vietnam war are those who marched on Washington when we were widening the war into Cambodia. I was with the 1st Marine Regiment and some of us were already in Cambodia when abruptly pulled back. I credit the protesters with possibly saving mine and many other people's lives on both sides.
Second, I was just hours back from Nam when I was in a crowd inside San Francisco Airport. I was waiting for a flight home to Klamath Falls, Oregon, but I was feeling waves of panic that I was having a harder and harder time controlling. I just felt so defenseless being within striking distance of so many strangers and not having a weapon with which to defend myself. I needed to be alone, so I went outside into the night and walked down a long crescent shaped sidewalk to where it's end was in shadow. I stood there until I figured my flight was about to board. As I walked up toward the terminal and into the bright portion of the sidewalk, a group of about ten men and women my age (19), unfolded their circle and stood in line and spit at me and called me names, one of which was 'baby killer'. I was surprised and ashamed that I just kept walking and didn't even say a word in my own defense. I never told a soul about that incident until I was much older and could distinguish their shame from my own. I hated being a Marine more than they could possibly know. I was glad to be alive and not have killed a child. They couldn't know how good that felt. But had I killed a child, their words and spit would have been a welcome respite from my inner hell. One more thing, this incident was witnessed by at least a dozen other men and women, well dressed and some middle aged. Not one even acknowledged it was happening, let alone defended me. That shocked me more than the assault.
Finally, I support our troops; the ones who have no rank and are doing the dying. If this country can't decide what it's doing in Iraq, it has no business asking these young people to do the killing and dying. Bring them home from Iraq now.
Lembke's main claims have been shown to be false.......2007-07-06
While the book is interesting and occasionally insightful, most of Lembke's evidence against spitting has now been debunked.
As has been documented online in early 2007, contrary to Lembke's claims:
(1) There were many contemporaneous accounts of spitting, including spitting reported in the New York Times and Washington Post by Pulitzer-Prize winning journalists.
(2) Contrary to Lembke's claim that such stories began appearing only about 1980, such stories were extremely common in the 1967-72 period.
(3) Returning soldiers frequently flew through civilian airports, the San Francisco Airport being one of the four official military debarkment points for returing servicemen flying directly from the Far East.
(4) The memoirs of one anti-war protester reports that his group tried to meet as many servicemen returning through the San Francisco airport as possible (with the greeting: "F ** K the Army."
(5) In contemporary accounts, women protesters were frequently witnessed spitting (Lembke makes the sexist claim that women do not spit).
(6) Many spitting stories do not fit the pattern that Lembke attributes to them (e.g., sometimes spat upon military reported responding violently).
(7) Some accounts of spitting were put forward by people who opposed the war, so Lembke's suggested reasons for their supposed lying are not always present.
(8) At least one anti-war spitter has come forward and admitted that he spat on Vietnam servicemen.
(9) Lembke reports some of the results of studies that he discusses in a way that minimizes the hostility to troops that was revealed in the studies.
Lembke appears not to have researched newspapers of the period with enough care to justify his extravagant claims, a defect that caused most of his factual claims about the lack of evidence to collapse when other scholars began examining them. If most of the hundreds of retrospective first-hand accounts of spitting contain no obvious errors, but Lembke's account contains errors on almost every one of his evidentiary points, why would a fair-minded reader credit Lembke's frequently mistaken account of no spitting over the accounts of people who were actually present?
Yet another denier..........2007-03-31
...Lebmcke's views and columns sit right beside the Holocaust and 9/11 denier's articles in Counterpunch. Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam is just a novelization in the same vein. One only has to study minimally, such as basic observations at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to realize this book is just another contrived machination from the kooks on the left.
Lefty Revisionism.......2007-03-05
This book is an attempt to rewrite history so as to whitewash the awful treatment the Left gave the military. I was in the military just as the US got out of Vietnam, from 1973 to 1975, and I can tell you from personal experience that it was common to be abused by angry long-hair types when wearing your uniform in public. It usually happenned in public venues when the hippies could ambush you from a crowd.
I was never spit upon. However, that was because when I was in uniform in a public place like a bus station or airport, I was with other guys in uniform. In such cases, hippies would just come out of nowhere, spew obscenities and "baby killer" at you, and then disappear before you could process what happenned or why. It was akin to a street person shouting at you that you were a murderer and a Martian. You just wondered what the heck was that about, shrugged your shoulders, and pressed on.
This hate for all things military was everywhere and extended to security guards in stores (this was back when shoplifting stuff was considered a revolutionary act) and Boy Scouts, who were called "Little Fascists."
To witness the truth turned upside down, black called white, and the spitting disavowed is astounding. Does the Left ever stop lying?
totally insulting.......2007-02-02
lembcke admits that most "fictional" occurances of vietnam vets being spat on was at the san francisco airport, which is exactly where my father got it as soon as he walked off the plane. i heard lembcke on the air america this morning and i was completely caught off guard and offended by his smug attitude and complete disregard of the servicemen that were actually, physically spat on. just because it wasn't in the paper doesn't mean it didn't happen. i agree that the nixon-agnew administration made people in the anti-war movement into monsters, but it's ridiculous to say that stories of spitting were all invented. i am a long-time air america listener, liberal and anti-war demonstrator, and anybody who's blood has boiled over politics, a war or any social issue or injustice knows that, unfortunately, people's emotions can get the better of them. further, let's not deny it so that it never happens again.

The Chosen: The Hidden History of Admission and Exclusion at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton
ASIN: 0300084684 |
Book Description
This unique and richly informative addition to American educational, religious, and cultural history examines the college life of Jews at Yale from the first Jewish graduate in 1809 to the present time, drawing comparisons to the Jewish experience at other elite colleges and universities and to the experiences of other minorities at Yale. In this revised edition, Oren draws on new interviews and references to present the dramatic events of the past twenty years, describing the tensions between majority and minority cultures in an academic world increasingly committed to inclusiveness and the solidification of meritocracy.

Description:
The rise in numbers of overweight/obese children in the UK is causing widespread concern. Biomedical constructions of body acceptability and 'good health' mean that overweight/obese young people are frequently seen as deviant. The socio-cultural contexts within which young teenagers become fat, and lay conceptualisations of fatness, have largely been ignored. This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with teenagers aged 13-14 years (n=36), drawn from families living in areas classified as socio-economically disadvantaged. Half of the sample had a Body Mass Index (BMI) classifying them as overweight or obese, whilst the remainder were classified as being 'normal' weight. Participants' embodied perceptions of fatness were complex and sometimes contradictory. We discuss what young teenagers perceive the influences on fatness and body size to be; the professed consequences of being fat; participants' experiences of attempting to lose weight; and, their reported interactions with friends and family relating to fatness and dieting. Participants rarely mentioned any health-related consequences of their own and others' fatness, although wearing 'nice' clothes and being slowed down were raised as considerations by girls and boys, respectively. 'Normal' weight teenagers who disliked their bodies or who wanted to lose weight often claimed to be anxious about this. Being very obese also led to anxiety and reported attempts at 'crash dieting'. Acceptance of body size/shape was, however, common amongst the overweight and obese teenagers, although some had attempted weight loss. The teenagers in this study were rarely supportive of friends or family who attempted to lose weight and frequently disagreed with others' perceptions of fatness. These findings are important as they contradict the common perception that being overweight/obese is related to body dissatisfaction and that young people have a fear of fatness.
