This book is an introduction to the technology and application of computers in the legal field - from office and court use, to the debate over artificial intelligence. The reader is assumed to have no initial knowledge of computing. The first four chapters deal with the nature of computer hardware, communications, and software. The next three chapters deal with the variety of current computer applications in law: from legal information retrieval to jury administration in the court system. The final three chapters deal with the adventurous attempts to use artificial intelligence in law. As well as dealing with computer applications in law, this book features some aspects of law and the legal process which the computer is currently highlighting - what is the nature of a rule, how will law react to a potential torrent of easily available secondary materials, will computerised courts affect justice? Be careful which edition you get!.......2004-08-07

Amazon.com does not clearly distinguish between the uselessly obsolete first edition (published in 1991) and the revised edition (published in 1998). These are practically different books. I got burned because when I clicked on a link that said something like "3 used & new from $21.60", I ended up with two copies of the edition with ENIAC on the cover!

This book is a must-read for anyone specifically interested in environmental politics in Tennessee, and a worthwhile read for anyone interested in how conservation/environmental affairs have evolved throughout the 20th century. While the book deals primarily with the Tennessee Conservation League it presents that history in a broad context of vital public affairs. Extremely well researched and documented. An important title for libraries.

This is the most comprehensive book on reactor design on the market. Like Nauman's previous book on reactor design, it assumes a smart reader. It is thus more suitable for working engineers or graduate students rather than the typical undergraduate, but a good instructor could pull it off and learn a lot in the process. Numerical techniques are stressed to allow rigorous design calculations for complex situations. I particularly like the chapters on laminar flow reactors and polymerizations where the book really has no competition....

This book, broadly divided into two portions, is aimed at agriculture and soil physicists and those working in the areas of remote sensing. I know it's been a major topic of conversation for both myself and lots of other people in my area -- from young to old.

I was pleased to see that this book is now finally available on the internet for people all across the country to order. It's a wonderful, funny peek into the life of an Every Woman -- identifiable to millions of women from coast to coast. She is our mother, our friend, our acquintance.

Martha gives us a character to attach ourselves to and get connected with. The story makes you think, ponder, and laugh at your own life. It's been truly one of the best books I've read in awhile and it's diary format really adds to the journey Annie Bloom takes us on. I promise it will not disappoint!!

The troops returning home to Germany after the 1918 Armistice found their country riven by internal unrest, and its eastern borders threatened. Though reluctant to support the new Republic, the many Free Corps formed by ex-Imperial soldiers fought furiously against Communist revolutionaries at home and Polish and Bolshevik Russian pressure on the frontiers. Later providing much of the manpower for the new Reichswehr, the Free Corps would have strong links with the nascent Nazi Party. This concise account of a little-known but central episode in the history of 20th century Germany is illustrated with rare photographs, and ten colour plates showing unprecedented details of uniforms and insignia.

Short Pause Between Wars.......2007-01-30

This Osprey Elite volume details a little known chaotic period following Germany's defeat in World War 1. Not only did the nation nearly split apart, having only been a united Germany since the mid-19th century, but an uprising ousted the Kaiser and his government.

Various new governments attempted to form, some more successful than others, and the Freikorps, made up of civilians and war veterans under the banner of popular officers or political parties attempted to curb anarchy and advance their cause. There were also severe external threats to national unity which Germany was unable to face given the crippling Treaty of Versailles. With Germany having no real armed forces to speak of these patriotic or opportunistic individuals stepped forward to fight.

The threats to Germany were many; Massive reparation payments crippled an economy that had not yet recovered from years of war privation. The British fleet maintained the Hunger Blockade into 1919. French and Belgian forces attempted both land grabs (using the excuse that Germany was failing to pay its reparations) and backed revolutionaries. Poland also shifted its border westwards and supported uprisings. Communist and anti-government partisans cropped up again and again. The only aid to Germany from the victorious Allies were stern warnings against German rearmament.

Along with the usual excellent color plates this volume presents a bleak message against vengeance oriented victors. Had the German people, most of whom had little idea as to the causes and waging of the war, not been thrown to the wolves the world could perhaps have avoided the follow on war. And maybe not have had to smash Germany so utterly twenty years later.

As it was France did not learn the lesson about gracious victory; WW2 German POWs returning from the US, Canada, and Britain were shoved into French mines and industry similar to those Germans wasting away in Siberia.

Good, but rather short.......2002-11-22

This book is a good account of the history, tactics, and accoutrements of the various Freikorps groups that proliferated in Germany after the First World War. It is well-written, shows much research, and is copiously illustrated.

My only "complaint" is that it is so short --- about 60 pages, and much of that is taken up by photographs and maps. In spite of the brevity, I came away with the feeling that I had gotten a fine account of the Freikorps. I don't feel that anything was "left out." But this book was more like a long magazine article. Not that there's anything wrong with that, except that it is priced like a book.

This was the first of Osprey's "Men-At-Arms" series I've ever read. I find the series impressive, especially for its illustrations. Would I read another book of the series? Certainly! Would I BUY it? Not likely ... Not if I can get it in a library, or only if the price were cut in half!

Informative on a Little Known Period.......2001-12-23

This study covers the political, economic, and military situations of the time. As a long time student of WWI history I had only barely been made aware of the Spartacists and the Freikorps by seeing a few grainy news photos in period publications such as Leslie's Weekly. I really was ignorant of the immediate post armistice period. So when I saw this title I quickly ordered it.
I had known of civil unrest and the Russo Polish War of 1920 but did not know that the German Freikorps were involved in the armed dispute over the Upper Silesia plebiscite.
The Freikorps as opposed to the regular German Army set up under the armistice was composed of various "freebooter" volunteer units raised by ex-imperial veterans to keep order, oppose the Red Bolsheviks, and defend the nation against Polish raiders who wanted to take over parts of the border zone.
Freikorps units ranged in size from local defense companies to fully integrated all arms units as large as divisions and corps. The effectiveness was varied but they were disciplined and highly motivated volunteers who managed to keep the national territory more or less intact. But they were not supporters of the Weimar Republic for the most part.
It is an irony that the mostly succesful results of their efforts were overshadowed by the failures of the politicos who signed the harsh Treaty of Versailles and caused the subsequent ascendancy of Hitler and his cutthroat gang.

Excellent book on a fascinating period in history.......2001-11-09

Dealing with the German anti-Communist volunteer military movement that sprang up after WWI, in face of the "German Revolution," and leading up to the rise of Hitler's infamous Nazi party (to which the Freikorps would have strong ties), this book covers a very interesting period in history, one that has been overshadowed by the cataclysmic events before and after it. Packed with pictures and detailed drawings of these fascinating 20th century Landskchnechts, this book fills a void in terms of visual reference of the Freikorps, who helped stop the spread of Communism, albeit violently, into Germany and beyond. The campaigns and battles they partook in within Germany and at her Eastern borders are covered, and provide unique insight into the fighting history of the Freikorps. Additionally, some (although quite limited) informtion and visual reference is provided on the enemies of the Freikorps, such as the Volksmarine, Ruhr Red Army, POW, and other Eastern European pro-Communist para-military organizations, helping to get the overall picture of the forces arrayed against each other during the battles that took part during this period. A recommended read.
