Book Description

The author/editor has produced two stand-alone or companion volumes. Only one third of the original material remains.

New Markets and Products begins with two chapters on emerging markets. The book then goes on to cover markets and products of increasing complexity: standard equity and interest rate derivatives, exotic options, swap (and swaptions), volatility trading and finally credit derivatives.

The contributors are all acknowledged experts in their fields: Michael Howell, Mark Fox, Ian King, Chris Rogers, Andrew Street, Riccardo Rebonato, Edmond Levy, Bryan Thomas, Vincent Lacoste, Desmond Fitzgerald and Blythe Masters.

New Markets and Products will be an essential reference tool for risk managers, institutional investors, fund managers, bankers, corporate treasurers and financial consultants.

"In this volume Carol Alexander has gathered together ten articles that are concerned with important recent developments in financial markets. Two of the articles are concerned with emerging markets. They explore the reasons for their growth and the nature of the investment opportunities available. The remaining eight articles are concerned with derivatives. There are chapters on equity derivatives, interest rate derivatives, exotic options, volatility trading, and credit derivatives. The final chapter on credit derivatives is particularly timely. This market is in the process of transforming the way banks manage credit risk. I have seen no other discussion of the market as comprehensive and useful as that provided by Blythe Masters.

Market participants and students alike will find much useful and thought-provoking information in this volume."

- John Hull, August 1998

4 out of 5 stars A little dated but a great reference.......2005-04-02

The articles presented in this book definitely provide a good foundation of concepts required for FRM and Financial Markets.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent content, but misleading title........2001-10-11

This book is a continuation of volume 1 - being that it is purely focused on financial markets and financial products. I was looking for a book on managing risk surrounding the development of new products (i.e. goods) and services for the market place. These issues are VERY different than those surrounding financial products in a nearly efficient market. I'll keep the book for the excellent content, but beware - it's probably not what you might expect!

4 out of 5 stars Good science, but kinda boring.......2007-09-23

This book has great derivations and explains concepts well. It has no colors and limited figures, though.

5 out of 5 stars Good undergrad book.......2007-04-06

Bought this as a supplement to my graduate courses in surface chemistry. While there is better text available for graduate-level study (Adamson and Gast), this book does a superb job of laying the foundation in colloids and surface chemistry. With a strong background in physical chemistry, the subject matter will be a breeze to learn. I struggled with the courses until I picked this up. I applaud the author for a fine job in organization and layout of material, as well as a basic delivery of theory.

            5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2004-06-23

I have never taken colloidal chemistry in college. So, when I had to pick this topic up to understand the dispersion system I was working on at work, I was fortunate enough to find this book. This book taught me everything I needed to know about colloidal systems. It's well organized and intuitive. Highly recommended for students in the field

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to surface and interfacial phenome.......2000-09-01

As a teacher of these topics I found this book an excellent one.A very good coverage of fundamentals such as surface and interfacial tension, intermolecular and colloidal interactions, colloidal stability, liophobic and liophylic colloids, electrokinetics phenomena. All these complex topics and more are treated in a very clear and rigorous way. I strongly reccomend this book.

            5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......1999-10-13

This is an excellent, first-level introduction to colloids and is better than any others available in the market. The vignettes in the book alone are worth the price! Suitable for self-study!

            Book Description

From the reviews of the First Edition: "The book has admirably met its stated goal. The whole gamut of surface and colloid science has been presented in a comprehensive manner without any undue oversimplification. The author should be congratulated for his clarity." -Advanced Materials Now in its second edition, this work remains the single most useful introduction available to the complex area of surface and colloids science. Industry expert Drew Myers walks readers through concepts, theories, and applications-keeping the mathematics to a minimum and presenting real-world case studies to illustrate key technological and biological processes. He substantially reorganizes and updates the material to reflect the current state of knowledge in the field, offering new chapters on absorption and biological systems in addition to the important areas of colloid stability, emulsions and foams, monolayer films, surfactants, and wetting. This revision also boasts an improved index, more than 200 new line drawings, general and specific chapter bibliographies, and end-of-chapter problems. Geared to scientists, technologists, and students dealing with colloidal and surface systems and their numerous industrial applications, the book imparts an understanding of the fundamental aspects of surfaces, interfaces, and colloids, which is essential for effective solutions in diverse areas of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, engineering, and material sciences.

            5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT TEXT.......2007-09-29

I used this book as a supplement to my main text for a graduate level course in colloids and surface physical chemistry. It was by far one of the best texts to use for this area. It makes things easier to understand without all the math in some other texts. Excellent.

            4 out of 5 stars A thorough general introduction.......2006-11-10

Surfaces, Interfaces, and Colloids: Principles and Applications, 2nd Edition, by Drew Myers, Wiley-VCH
I have used this book for a course I teach at a technical university on surface and colloid science. The students are typically seniors or beginning graduate students in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science. For this group of students, I would like a book which covers the wide scope of this field at an intermediate level, giving the basic theory but with a wealth of applications to demonstrate the utility of this subject in the real world. The book by Myers does not quite satisfy those criteria, but it comes close. Few other books cover such a wide range of topics, from the basic stuff such as chapters on the origin of surface tension to detailed treatments of applications in emulsions, aerosols, friction, and adhesion. I can think of a few other books with such a breadth of treatment - Hunter's "Foundations of Colloid Science" or Adamson and Gast's "Physical Chemistry of Surfaces", but these are somewhat encyclopedic in nature and hard for first time readers to really benefit from. The detail of the treatment is somewhat light on the mathematical side, as compared perhaps to Hiemenz and Rajagopalan`s text. But the latter book has been judged too mathematically challenging by the students of my classes - a view I don't really share. What I like best about Meyer's book is the effectiveness, at least in my view, with which it gets all of the important ideas across. Though short on equations, the author uses careful explanations and helpful diagrams to cover the area in a very detailed way. Many topics explained, such as the dynamics of wetting and competitive wetting, are not even mentioned in higher level textbooks. And the explanations are complete, not abbreviated or simplified, and with may practical examples illustrating the concepts. The one complaint I hear the most from students is that the text doesn't give much help with solving the homework problems which the author has placed at the ends of each chapter. To be fair, this complaint really only applies to the more difficult of the problems, which account for roughly half of them. But the students are correct in that these problems sometimes do not provided needed data (it is often not even in the book) and often call for a level of analysis which is above the level of the relevant chapter. A few worked examples, especially in Chapters 4-10 where the basic material is presented, would have been very helpful. While this shortcoming may be a detriment towards self-study, I feel that the breadth of coverage and effectiveness of the explanations makes this a good book to have on your shelf for the next time you need to brush up on your colloid and surface science.

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory text.......2004-01-16

My Ph.D. research involves surface and interface science, so I read a lot of texts in this topic area. This book is one of the best introductory texts I have seen to surface and interface science. It is geared towards the undergraduate student in science and engineering who has little knowledge of quantum, solid state, or thermodynamics. The text flows cleanly with lots of simple pictures and diagrams to illustrate ideas. Important equations are included, but the amount of math is kept to a minimum. All the key ideas in surface science are mentioned, such as adhesion, tribology, wetting, oxidation, catalysis, etc. There is adequate mention of applications, technologies, and how they are related together. The book is organized such that each chapter covers a specific topic, and they can be read independently of each other, making it a great reference. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about surface or interface science.

How does a man go from bus driver to butt naked? The answer is a twisting, turning, true-to-life tale - with names changed to protect the unclothed.

In The Naked Bus Driver, author Marshall B. Allen chronicles the collected experiences of "Newt Sexton" in an entertaining, insightful memoir with more than a few laugh-out-loud moments.

After discovering nudism in a magazine called Sunshine and Health, Newt becomes intent on visiting a retreat. One fateful day, while driving his route, he discovers a mailbox marked LAKE COMO and nearly locks up the brakes on his big, shiny bus. The day he's been waiting for has arrived!

As he ventures into this new, bare-all world, the people Newt meets are normal, everyday folks. They get together for cookouts, card games and even a wedding. The only difference - clothing is optional.

The Naked Bus Driver is a story about everyday life - and the bizarre routes it can take when you follow your heart. So get on the bus and buckle up. You're in for a skin-tillating ride!

                            Book Description

In The Tao of Spycraft, for the first time anywhere Ralph Sawyer unfolds the long and venerable tradition of spycraft and intelligence work in traditional China, revealing a vast array of theoretical materials and astounding historical developments. Encompassing extensive translations of relevant portions of theoretical military manuals previously unknown in the West (such as the T'ai-pai Yin-ching, Hu-ling Ching, and Ping-fa Pai-yen), the book spans centuries to trace the development and expansion of agent concepts, insertion and control methods, recruitment, and covert practices such as assassination, subversion, and sexual entrapment and exploitation. The book goes on to explore counter-intelligence and all aspects of military intelligence, including objectives, analysis and interpretation.

An excellent, thoughroughly researched and well indexed tome on the history of the Chinese propensity for intelligence collection at all levels. This book combined with "Chinese Intelligence Operations" by Nicholas Eftimiades provides valuable insight into one of the worlds most populus, yet fairly closed societies. With tensions in Asia in a constant state of flux this book is a must read for intelligence professionals and enthusiasts alike. The only drawback is the author's style, which makes for some dry stretches, still worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting overview of a fascinating project.......2003-12-21

This low-key but comprehensive look at the fascinating (and not entirely successful) BBC experiment really satisfies. The author doesn't quite capture the tensions of the group or the relief felt after the troublemaking family left (probably to spare their feelings), and it doesn't have an introduction to the people involved, so it's a little hard to tell who's who at first, but those are the only real criticisms I have. What this book DOES have is a look at the difficulties that were overcome by both crew and cast in recreating a lifestyle that hasn't been endured for thousands of years. We've come a long way from slaughtering our own food and a lifetime of backbreaking labor just to survive, let alone thrive, but the group manage to stick to it and fulfill all the challenges and obligations required to be considered an Iron Age community. For instance, I don't know how the cast EVER managed to take an ordinary chunk of red rock and miraculously turn it into a series of fashionable iron pendants. The most I'd ever be able to do is produce a hot, red rock.

This book also reminds us that the project wasn't just drudgery and endless meals of boiled kale. The visit of another iron age tribe and the building of a wicker man for the Samhain festival give a sense of palpable excitement and giddiness in the group, and the tale of the night the young ones staged a guilt-ridden jailbreak and thumbed a ride - filthy iron age clothes and all - to the nearest pub is laughable but also understandable. The part where the hungry group walks past a closed gas station and press their faces to the window to see the vending machines full of food and drink is a sharp reminder of how hard the life was, and how much we take for granted now. It's at that moment that you really feel for them and empathize as if you were part of the group.

The pictures are vibrant, even though somehow everyone looks cleaner than they really were, and there is a lovely afterward that sums up what the families felt when they came back to the modern world, and how the experience had changed them all. There's even a nifty list of supplies and foodstuffs needed for the project and a directory of Iron Age sites to visit if you'd like to learn more.

I really enjoyed this book. It was educational without being boring and fun without being frivolous, and it will keep me from jonesing until a DVD of the series is released in America.

                              Book Description

Not everything that claims to be science is. UNDERSTANDING SCIENTIFIC REASONING shows you easy-to-use principles that let you distinguish good science from bad information you encounter in both textbooks and the popular media. And because it uses the same processes that scientists use (but simplified), you'll know you're getting the most reliable instruction around. You'll also learn how to reason through case studies using the same informal logic skills employed by scientists.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book; Inspiring Text.......1999-12-09

I've used this book since the first edition years ago whenever I teach our Logic and Scientific Reasoning Course. It is the best explanation I've ever seen of the process of scientific reasoning and why it is so successful. Students really get a grasp of what's going on in all branches of science, historical as well as experimental, and they can do it on their own. Great stuff, with lots of interesting and illuminating examples.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting; all educated people should read it!.......1999-10-24

This book is much more interesting than the publisher's blurb suggests. Every day, educated people have to deal with the results of scientific study. If you're foggy on why a "significant difference" is not always a large difference (and vice versa), or if you haven't quite realized that theories can be disproved but not proved, you need this book.
