Purchasing Demystified.......2002-01-13

Dr. Harry Hough's latest text is a quick and easy guide to learn and apply established purchasing techniques.

Purchasing Fundamentals for Today's Buyer is broad in scope and aimed primarily at the new and relatively inexperienced buyer. There are however new practices and procedures that can be adopted by even the most experienced supply chain professional.

Dr. Hough studied both economics and mechanical engineering and holds an MBA from the University of Chicago. He is the Founder and current President of the American Purchasing Society, as well as a full time author and consultant, having held senior positions in purchasing, given seminars and taught at several colleges. Hough authored a previous version of this text in 1992 with James Ashley.

The appendices are my favorite part and I feel the appendices alone are worth the price of the text. Many points are self-evident for experienced practitioners at the management level, but their implications from both an ethical and a strategic perspective are large.

I really enjoyed the approach of this text: simple yet effective.

Best book for business buyers........2002-01-11

An excellent book about how to buy for business and how the purchasing professional buys. Gives everything the new buyer needs to know, such as where to find sources, how to negotiate, and the essentials of purchasing law.

Waste of money !.......2000-01-08

The information in the book is so general, and a lot of it is already well known info even for the new buyer. The essential information could be written on a couple of pages. Hoped to learn a lot from it, unfortunatly, will have to follow the advice in the preface : new buyers learn by observation.

Great, up to a point.......2001-01-23

This book really was a bucket-load of belly laughs - C J Philips has collected some gems over the years. I am afraid to say that the book loses a star, though, as it overlooks the fact that around 90% of graffiti is poorly spelt invitations to ........ trysts with men who, in all probability, are not being entirely candid about their anatomy. Let's hope this imbalance is addressed in the next edition.

Funny, but not for children.......2000-09-04

A very entertaining book. Plenty of duds, but also tons of great one liners and graffiti "conversations". I noticed that "people who have bought this have also bought:" includes Harry Potter. This being bathroom graffiti, a lot of it is unsuitable for children. But for adults, tons of great laughs.

Could This Even Be Considered a Book?.......1999-12-24

I was searching to buy a book for my friend for Christmas, and what I was looking for was a good old fashioned "bathroom book"- something entertaining, and in my case, hopefully outrageously funny. So I, as you did, happened upon this title. It looks promising, doesn't it? I mean, with a title like that how couldn't it be great? Well, it is awful. I was expecting pictures of some of the grossest public restrooms in the country, but what I got was a thrown together attempt. There are no pictures- the "graffiti" is typed onto the pages in different fonts, I suppose to signify different entries. I could have overlooked that, but the "graffiti" is not funny, let alone interesting. Same old, same old. Now, I resort to giving this garbage to my friend in an effort to make light of my internet purchase. The card will read: "I'm sorry."

Pershing may not be as honored as American military heroes Washington, Lee, Grant, and MacArthur, but he outranked them all: He's the only man ever to hold the rank of six-star general. Gene Smith's "Until the Last Trumpet Calls" (1998 Paperback) tells the life story of General John J. Pershing. It is well documented with reviewing personal correspondences, eyewitness interviews, several black and white photos, and extensive (8 pages) endnotes.

From his birth in 1860, through his days at West Point (class of 1886), to his various US Cavalry assignments across the American west and the early 20th century Pacific, to his leading the American Expeditionary Forces in World War 1 (WW1), till his death in 1948, John Pershing was well-respected, and often feared, icon determined to perform his duty. Pershing moved slowly through the Army ranks until he met Teddy Roosevelt. After their Spanish American War acquaintance Captain Pershing (only a Captain after 16 years!) was catapulted into a history-making career. By the end of the Great War Pershing achieved 6 stars as General of the Armies (unique to American history)!

Smith tells Pershing family celebrations and tragedies, it acquaintances with future history makers, and the General's "Americans fight as Americans" philosophy during WW1. Readers learn about Pershing's mentoring George Patton, George Marshall, and many more. We hear of his close WW1 friendship with France's Marshal Petain (who became the chief voice in the Nazi-Vichy government of World War 2, to Pershing's horror). The General was firmly and verbally anti-Kaiser in 1915 and anti-Nazi in 1940.

Smith closes the book with interesting chapters about "Black Jack" Pershing's (an appellation from his pre WW1 days commanding an African American Army division in Texas) son's and grandsons' careers. Each respective had his army career in World War 2, Cold War Europe, and Viet Nam (the youngest grandson was killed during the 1968 Tet Offensive). Unfortunately, General Pershing had no great-grandchildren. The book ends with a feeling of "Taps" for an influential 20th century American family.

Although Smith tends towards run-on sentences and the occasional sentence fragment this 320-page book's conversational style makes it an easy read. It is recommended to all military historians, US Cavalry buffs, World War 1 students, and 20th century Americana aficionados.

What was Pershing's military and political philosophy?.......2006-09-05

The facts of Pershing's life are interesting: he participated in the Indian Wars, led soldiers in the Spanish American war in Cuba alongside Teddy Roosevelt, was a central figure in the occupation of the Philippines, served as commanding officer in the manhunt for Pancho Villa, and -- of course -- was the commander in chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Apparently, he was an extremely capable military man with an eye for detail and unparalleled military discipline. He overcame an unspeakable personal tragedy -- the death of his wife and daughters in a fire. Also impressive: from a modest Missouri upbringing, he was entirely self-made.

But a great biography does more than recite facts about its subject. It brings the reader inside his mind, and gives historical context to his decisions. In this regard, this book is a failure. The reader does not come away with the impression that Pershing was a great military strategist, like Lee or MacArthur. In fact, it is hard to decipher what was Pershing's military philosophy. Neither does the reader come away with the impression that Pershing's thinking about the great events of his time had any impact on the era's political decisionmakers. There is only one exception: it is clear that Pershing saw the United States as a full partner with its European allies in World War I, rather than as a mere source of personnel to replenish the dwindling ranks of French and British infintrymen. This contribution was significant.

The World War I era is one of the most fascinating and under-appreciated in recent Western history. The war itself was one of the terrible tragedies of all time, and it set the stage for the worldwide economic expansion of the twenties, depressionof the thirties, and the Second World War. It's too bad that this book sheds so little light on one of the most important figures of that era.

Some of the criticism of other readers is right, but this was obviously not intended to be a definitive, complete biography of this historical figure. It tells you much more than an encyclopedia article but presumably less than the two-volume biography by another author. The view is mainly of the private side of this man's life, which was necessarily dominated by its public side.

Good, As Far As It Goes..........2004-08-25

This book is a good beginning to any study of John J. Pershing, but there isn't enough "meat on the bones". Pershing led quite a life, and really needs a thorough, well-researched bio, but this isn't it. Oh, it's quite readable, and if you don't know much about Blackjack, it will give you good, basic information, but it will leave you wanting a biography with more depth. And the writing style! The author uses sentences that are more like laundry lists...on and on and on...Somebody give this man a comma, a semi-colon, a period, and then teach him how to use them!

Read another book about Pershing!.......2003-07-28

This is neither a history of the period nor a biography. It is a collection of quotations and anecdotes, that appear to have been taken from the personal papers of John J. Pershing, that are on file at the Library of Congress, not an unbiased source. I got as far as through the period on Pershing's frontier and Philippine service and put it down. It is a shallow treatment that reads like a history for young children. If someone is really interested in the era and the man, read Frank Vandiver's book " Black Jack: The Life and Times of John J. Pershing" in two volumes, published in 1977. A book Smith cites, Donald Smythe's "Guerilla Warrior: The Early Life of John J. Pershing" (1973) is not too bad, nor is "Black Jack Pershing" by Richard O'Connor (1961). None of these are hostile treatments, and all are well written. Pershing was an able and brave Army officer, but so were many others of the era. But Pershing was the only one to go from Captain to Brigadier General despite opposition of the Army command, and this was not solely due to his ability. His smartest move was marrying the daughter of Senator Warren, one of the shrewder political operators of the time, and one who, although a Republican, had equal entree with Wilson as well as Roosevelt and Taft. Warren was Pershing's guardian angel. If you are older than 12, pass this book up and read one of the others.

Despite the author's atrocious writing- sometimes I had to read and reread sentences several times over to understand them- General Pershing's strength, determination and character shine through. I felt uplifted and inspired. In short, learning about this giant of a man was inspiring but the writing got in the way.

The Roman Catholic Church is under siege: in the United States, at least, its membership is aging; parishes are closing in Boston and Philadelphia neighborhoods, and the church faces mounting legal costs stemming from its long-denied history of priestly sexual abuse of minors.
But as Karen Liebreich demonstrates in her exhaustively-researched "Fallen Order, Intrigue, Heresy and Scandal in the Rome of Galileo, the Church has a long and sordid history of covering up criminal child abuse by those entrusted with the care and religious training of children.

Her story begins in the sixteenth century with the establishment of the Priorist Order of the clergy--dedicated to the care and education of the poor and orphaned offspring of Rome. It began with noble enough motives, but soon became a conduit for pedophile priests who engaged in what the Church called "il vitio pessimo"--the worst vice, or sodomy.

Closely intertwined in this is the Office for the Doctrine of the Faith, which, during the Inquisition, was responsible for many of the wrongs done in the name of religion.
In the mid twentieth century, the man responsible for running that office was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is now Pope Benedict XVI. It was Cardinal Ratzinger who the author had to deal with in order to gain access to the Vatican's secret vaults where the documents pointing to the Church's hypocrisy were stored.

The whole dismal record of re-assignment of pedophile priests to new parishes unaware of their proclivities; cleansing of disciplinary records, and stone-walling by Cardinals like Boston's Cardinal Law demonstrates, in the authors words, "the example of the Priarist Order shows that abuse by priests is not a new problem. Modern perceptions of the gravity of the actions of pedophile priests are not anachronistic.'

`It is time," she concludes, that the modern Catholic Church took a closer look at the history of the Order of Clerics Regular of Pious Schools."

An eye-opening, revealing social analysis.......2004-11-11

Intrigue, heresy and scandal in Galileo's Rome is a suitable topic for fiction but Karen Liebreich provides all the trappings of action and high drama in her nonfiction Fallen Order: Intrigue, Heresy, And Scandal In The Rome Of Galileo And Caravaggio. This portrait of 17th century Roman politics and Church issues provides many surprises; from the story of how sexual abuse of children (practiced by some of the leading priests in the Piarist Order) led to its collapse to how bishops and cardinals participated in the cover-up in an effort to protect the church. An eye-opening, revealing social analysis.

Child Abuse By Priests, 17th Century Style.......2004-08-24

It is a story drearily familiar from the headlines: priests abuse children, the bishops and cardinals in charge of the priests know it and "solve" the problem by moving the priests around to other locations, and finally the story breaks and causes embarrassment and disruption within the church. It is news, but it is not new; the same thing was happening in the seventeenth century. In _Fallen Order: Intrigue, Heresy, and Scandal in the Rome of Galileo and Caravaggio_ (Grove Press), Karen Liebreich has found a scandal of priestly pedophilia that ruined and eventually closed a Catholic teaching order, the Piarists. The order was eventually restarted, and still exists. It is justifiably proud of making contributions to education (Mozart, Mendel, and Goya, to name just a few, were products of Piarist schools). It is proud of its founder, Father José de Calasanz, who was eventually beatified and became the patron saint of Catholic schools. It is quiet about the scandal that caused the suppression of the order, however, and Liebreich only stumbled upon the story in an ancient Florentine archive when she was doing a doctorate on public education. Looking through the thousands of letters from Calasanz (she grimly notes that there are no jokes and no lightness within them), she came across a euphemism: _il vitio pessimo_, "the worst sin." Her curiosity up, she went through difficult searches at the Vatican Secret Archive; the Inquisition Archive only opened six years ago, and she thereupon hunted there, too. There is much more to the story than pedophilic priests and a cover up, but sadly, the patron saint of Catholic schools quite clearly performed the same sort of cover-up that has brought disgrace to his contemporary equivalents.

St. Joseph Calasanz had seen the need for schools for poor children. He founded the Piarist Order in 1592, insisting that his Piarists had to live austere lives, dressing simply, wearing sandals in the winter, eating bad food and little of it. The rules included that they could not swim, play games, play guitar, or kiss even their mothers. The rules were broken with zeal by Father Stefano Cherubini, originally headmaster of the school in Naples. Father Stefano enjoyed sodomizing the pupils, and this became known to Calasanz, who could do little since Father Stefano came from a powerful family of lawyers. Calasanz therefore promoted Father Stefano, to get him away from the scene of the crime, citing only his luxurious diet and failure to attend prayers. However, he knew what Cherubini had really been up to, and he wrote that the sole aim of the plan "... is to cover up this great shame in order that it does not come to the notice of our superiors." Cherubini was even made head of the order in 1643 and the elderly Calasanz was pushed aside. Upon this appointment, Calasanz publicly documented Cherubini's long pattern of child molestation, a pattern that he had known about for years. Even this did not block Cherubini's appointment, but other members of the order were indignant about it, although they may have objected to Cherubini's more overt shortcomings. With such dissention, the Vatican took the easy course of suppressing the order.

Liebreich has written a strong yet detached and unemotional account of the events, with a broad look to political and religious forces of the times. She knows that 21st century horror about how priests abuse children is not going to be the same as supposed 17th century sensitivity about it, but she also shows that this does not really matter. The church had clear teachings on the subject at the time, but concentrated more on how pedophilia endangered the souls of the priests who engaged in it; throughout the correspondence in the book, Calasanz and other priests fretted about public scandal first, and offense to God second, with no mention at all to the wrong done to the victims of the abuse. In one of the parallels that Liebreich effortlessly draws to our own times in her final chapter, Pope John Paul II issued a quiet papal directive in January 2002 to say that priests were afflicted by these sins of their brethren and that such scandals made other fine priests look bad; the victims are still being ignored. The question of whether the church could have made a difference if it had learned from the Piarist scandal may be argued back and forth, but that it did not learn and that it continued to shield priests who habitually victimized their young charges is sadly beyond dispute.

I ordered this book on line and was charged for it and then was credited for the book as it could no longer be obtained. All I received was this little line stating out of stock. It would have been better to receive an email telling me that I could not get the book requested and that my card was being credited rather than crediting my card and then telling me the status of my order. This is the first time I was unable to receive a book that I ordered from your company and I was surprised. I have had no problems dealing with your company and I will continue in the future but I feel that this order should have been handled differently. Thank you and I look forward to working with you in the future.
