Book Description
So Much Data So Little Math is geared for the business community and for employees who are trying to interpret statistics without a background in formal mathematics. The book, relying on the availability of modern software rather than on the reader's math skills, puts trend analysis within reach of everyone. Through a simple method centering on case studies of ordinary business owners, May provides a simple way to learn how to model data. This highly practical text teaches five methods of modeling: regression, correlation, spreadsheets, database systems and neural networks. A must-read for any successful entrepreneur, "So Much Data So Little Math "will also be of great interest to researchers, business students and their instructors.
Customer Reviews:
Great Content, Poorly Written.......2001-02-13
As someone who wants to use practical mathematical concepts without delving into intense study of these tools, I found "So Much Data So Little Math" a valuable read. The author, William D May, introduces the use of correlation, linear regression, and neural networks for trend/time series prediction.
The author produces practical, every day examples to illustrate potential uses of these mathematical concepts. Readers will find that these examples (particularly the last one in the book that cleverly encapsulates all the tools in one scenario) make the ideas much easier to grasp.
While I applaud May's tremendous effort, I must unfortunately deduct 1 star for the ill-edited and written text. First, simple spelling mistakes were strewn throughout. This is very distracting and makes the book less professional. Second, sections of the book were literally "cut-and-pasted" without alteration. Lastly, the style of the text is overly dry. While it's true I am not reading Herman Hesse, I do believe that more effort could have been taken to liven up the general discussion. Perhaps the "cut-and-pasted" sections contributed to this stale feeling.
Overall, I am glad I read this book due to the new information and concepts I have learned. The high-marks remain because the book's purpose was served. Maybe in the next edition, the author will be able to iron out the wrinkles.
teaches how to use math to create business models........2000-06-15
This book is an introduction to business applications of certain mathematical techniques. The author focuses on data analysis, which allows you to use collected data to predict trends and formulate business plans. He wrote the book for people with not-so-strong math backgrounds, and I think he succeeded in making the book understandable for such people. (I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 only because there were a couple of explanations which were not clear to me--however, I fully admit that the problem could lie with me rather than the author in these instances.) Topics covered include statistics, spreadsheets, neural networks (a very good chapter), how to use databases, and basic logic. The tone of the book is conversational and the author does a good job of presenting dry information in a manner which is non-threatening and friendly. I recommend this book to those who want to learn to use math as a tool to improve managerial performance.
Clear, concise writing with excellent methods.......2000-05-16
This book provides superb examples of real-world methods forusing data analysis techniques without loading up on math. TheQuestion and Answer sections in the chapters are also one of the best features I've seen in this type of book. There is no doubt in my mind that anyone can use this book for real applications. Whether you are just starting, a seasoned pro, or need a desk reference, this book should suit the needs perfectly. All of my employees have copies, as do all of my friends.
Well worth the money. Hopefully we'll see more work like this from other authors.
So Much Data So Little Math.......2000-05-13
This book unlocks a program for dealing with trends and patterns that involve data. The book enables the user to analyze data quickly and develop working business models. The wonderful concept about this book is that one does not need a formal mathematical background in order to understand the math that is presented here. It is the authors goal to give the reader an ability to develop a mathematical model structured toward their business state of affairs. The author covers the book in a balanced fashion. He approaches the material in topical, analytical, and descriptive manner(an example of this can be found on page 16 with the discussion of home mail-order business and database application). The author overwhelmingly favors the subject matter he is writing about and the thesis is clearly stated. His professional background in mathematics and computer science is effectual in developing the thesis for this book. The book is written for those wanting to advance in specific business area knowledge. It's written theoretically with a generous helping of factual information. The theorizing is business and economic in nature with plenty of examples of how to's designed for data modeling. The use of computer software allows the process to flow smoothly without heavy mathematical ability. The theories and facts presented effectively support the thesis of the book. The books conclusion is somewhat ambiguous, however, I believe it is in agreement with the author and his stated purpose or thesis. The book has helped me understand what to expect from data analysis and been advantageous in my own business. From an MBA student perspective, I highly recommend you add this reading to your library.
William D. May's So Much Data So Little Math.......2000-05-10
This book deserves a Nobel Prize for translating difficult mathematics into ordinary English and for enabling the public to literally use computer and mathematical techniques with almost no knowledge of mathematics. It is useful for the small and large businessman, the manager and the employee, the student, the teacher, service employees, young and old alike. It allows you to access some of the most advanced techniques of analyzing the stock market (neural networks) with the touch of few buttons. You learn the basic computer techniques of statistics (multiple and linear regression), database management, linear programming, and even how to use calculus and logic, with practically no effort. There is an excellent section on fear of mathematics based on the latest research, which will be valuable for everybody (see some of my reviews on mathematics study aids like Schaum's Outlines). May's orientation toward translating difficult mathematics into ordinary English for the public is the type of thing that I believe in in my book reviews at Amazon.com and in my other writings. In my opinion, it takes the most creative genius to be able to do that, and the translator learns more about the subject himself or herself and is often very inspired creatively by reformulating quantitative into verbal or qualitative language. The Virginia colleges and universities and the CIA can be proud of May, who represents the best that America has achieved.

Book One of the Poppan Valley Trilogy
Customer Reviews:
Vivid and exciting.......2003-10-23
Long ago a huge war erupted when a Seer named Var tried to control all. At the end of it Var was defeated, but not destroyed. Power was considered too tempting for any mortal to keep. So each Seer wrote out his knowledge. No one was allowed to share their knowledge or spells with another. Then it was all joined together and hidden in a safe place, under guard. It became known as The Chaos Scroll. It was the only known protection against Var. Master Elzabar was a powerful Seer. He had a vision and a prophecy was made!
Var had learned the secret for eternal life. After four hundred years, most of the Seers were dead, and Var returned to Poppan Valley for revenge! He began by kidnaping Briana, a married woman whom he coveted. Her husband was Zernue, the Keeper of the Valley. Their children would embark on a dangerous journey for help against Var and the dark riders. Laila and Tokar, as foretold, would battle magic, demons, and ultimately Var, himself. The world's fate would rest in their young hands!
**** A fanciful tale of magic! Personally, I believe this book is perfect for teens and young adults. However, all ages will find themselves intrigued. Lots of colorful characters and creatures to spark the imagination. Recommended! ****

Not Just For Kids.......2001-12-27
I bought Chaos Scroll to save for future grandchildren and thought I would read just a couple of chapters since it was a "teen" book. I couldn't put it down and stayed up late into the night to finish it. I believe Ms. Stacey is a truly talented author with the ability to make fantasy worlds come to life. I can't wait to read the next book.
Fun Read.......2001-12-27
I thoroughly enjoyed The Chaos Scroll. With such vivid descriptions, I wish I could live in Poppan Valley and go on such wonderful adventures! I can hardly wait to read book two of the trilogy.
Move over Harry Potter.......2000-11-09
What a fun read. I couldn't put it down, stayed up all night reading it. I highly recommend this book. The action is non-stop and the characters are so real you feel as if you know them. Loved the monsters and unusual characters. Who says this is a Young Adult book - I loved it and I'm over 21!

Book Description
On the morning of September 11, 2001, the United States awoke to find itself at war. If that much was clear, however, many other things were notincluding the identity and nature of the enemy, the location of the battleground, and the strategy and tactics necessary for victory. In this collection, the editors of Foreign Affairs have brought together, from a variety of sources, the most authoritative contributions to the debate over the nation's most important security challenge.
Contributors include: The 9/11 Commission, Richard Betts, Max Boot, Ladan Boroumand, Roya Boroumand, George W. Bush, Grenville Byford, Thomas Carothers, Stephen Cohen, Alan Cullison, Paula J. Dobriansky, Michael Doran, James Fallows, Stephen Flynn, F. Understanding the War on Terror.......2007-02-08
Excellent book for those interested in understanding the lead up to the Iraq war and the intellectual discussions that surrounded the immediate effects of the conflict. Good for academics and beginners.
FASCINATING.......2006-03-13
For those of you seeking credible sources to make sense of issues like terrorism, look no further than Foreign Affairs. With each carefully crafted essay, like Fareed Zakaria's influential report on "Why They Hate Us" you will learn about the roots of terrorism and understand the best ways to deal with the challenges that terrorism presents.
This collection of essays and articles are brillantly written, thorougly researched, and authored by exteremly qualified policy analysts. Also, unlike many media sources, who increasingly use polemics when presenting a biased view of important topics, these essays present arguments from a variety of angles--which, in the end, is the best way to learn.
A Good Introduction to the Past, Present and Future of Terrorism.......2005-12-20
In "Understanding the War on Terror," Foreign Affairs Magazine has compiled an extensive array of articles examining not only the war on terrorism, but on the past, present and future of terrorism. The book covers a multitude of topics including the political, social, cultural, wealth, power, and religious struggles that have plagued the Middle East for decades; struggles that have created an atmosphere of instability in the region as well as for the rest of the world, especially America. While the publisher has done an admirable job, the book does fall short of its intended goal of explaining the War on Terror. Readers looking for answers to hardball questions on the 9/11 attacks will not find them in this book, but it are still worth reading.
"Understanding the War on Terror" begins with the chilling account of what transpired on that fateful day of September 11, 2002 when 19 terrorists hijacked four airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, a field in Pennsylvania, and into America's mind set.
The book covers, in general, terrorist acts, such as those committed in Yemen, Somalia where two Black Hawk Helicopters were shot down), the first World Trade bombing, attacks against the US in Saudi Arabia, the Khobar Apartments (killing 18 Americans), the USS Cole. . . . Many feel that those attacks were part of Osama bin Laden's "Jihad", or Holy War against the West. Some articles discuss "national security" where some writers feel that economic competitiveness or globalization plays a significant factor in US vulnerability; competitiveness in international trade has forced border security to perform fewer inspections and to relax regulation enforcement in order to speed commerce.
Richard K. Betts, writes about security and its breakdown within US security agencies like the FBI, CIA, NSA and so on (no mention of the FAA), and how these lapses must be corrected. Some of the areas that must be looked at as part of national security updating are spying, technologies, information gathering and analyzing and manpower, or field agents; increase funding like the CIA's 30 billion dollar budget increase is a good stating point, but it should not end there.
In his article, "Promoting Democracy and Fighting Terror", Thomas Carothers writes of the conflict between promoting democracy and enhancing internal security. He writes of the Bush administration's effort to build a stronger coalition with non democratic countries and autocratic leaders, or friendly tyrants -- countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Niyazov. These countries have little to no interest in promoting democracy, but Washington has demonstrated great restraint in the promotion of democracy in order to avoid terrorists from making those countries headquarters and/or escape routes for terrorists. The same is true, according to Carothers, of Southeast Asia where human right violations are common, yet the US has kept on friendly terms with governments even giving fifty million dollarsin aid to Malaysia. The author contends that it has become more important to assure security than to promote democracy. Washington has gotten friendlier with Russia and China for the same reasons. Many of the countries that Washington is courting have long histories of human rights violations or are oppressive states run by regimes that believe in autocracy and not democracy.
There are articles on religious groups, especially Islamic fundamentalists (radical and extremists Islamic groups). Some authors write of US foreign policy flip-flopping, efforts on reconstructing Afghanistan's political system. Fareed Zakaria writes of the Middle East's disillusionment with America (the West) and how this "is at the heart of the Arab problem[s]". His article illustrates the Middle East's rejection of modernization. Other writers tell of corruption, regime change, and the questions of which America's allies are. Still others write about warlord systems, the corruption of wealth and power, Gamal Abdel Nasser's failed dream of independence for the Middle East, Pakistan, al Qaeda, the Taliban, jihad, martyrdom, and factions in the Middle East. The book concludes with updates on the Bush administration's war in Iraq and on terrorism.
"Understanding the War on Terror" is an excellent primer for those unfamiliar with the past, present and future of America's relationship with the Middle East and on the war on terrorism, but it is in no way conclusive in its explanations of America's war on terror. Many of the articles seem to whitewash important factors that contribute negatively to America's relationship with the Middle East. Nevertheless "Understanding the War on Terror" is still worth reading.

An engrossing popular history of the major events and people at the time of Jesus, the Roman Empire, and the Han Dynasty.
Customer Reviews:
Great brief history!.......2005-07-25
The book is awesome and has whet my appetite for more history. At first I did not like the divided history approach of highlighting Rome, Judea and China in various chapters but after reading through the book it did seem to motivate one to read through to get to the next continuation (kind of like a cliff hanger). This tended to highlight more of Rome & Judea and only a small amount of China.
A Terrific Popular History of the First Century A.D........2004-09-09
The late historian Barbara Tuchman wrote a wonderful book called "A Distant Mirror" about the calamitous 14th century. It is absolutely spell-binding for history enthusiasts. While Klingaman's book is not quite as well written, it does a remarkable job of presenting the world-shattering changes that took place during the First Century A.D. (or C.E. if you prefer). As a Christian of the Episcopalian stripe, I enjoyed the "context" it provides for understanding the time of Jesus. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in the subject. Bring along your thinking cap because it's very thought provoking!
Very well-written.......2001-02-16
This book is wonderfully written, a pleasure to read. I give it five stars even though it is somewhat lop-sided: although it claims to be a history of Rome, China, and Judea in the first century, the author shows a decidedly western bias. Counting the sections, I see 14 on Rome, 11 on Judea, and only 7 on China. The author seems more sure-footed, and more excited, when describing Rome.
However, overall I found this a great read, enough so that it inspired to get some of the authors other books.
Quite simply, BRILLIANT !.......1999-06-27
This book is written with style and some wit, bringing long dead shakers & movers to life. Very entertaining with some clever insights from the author who also presents historical figures with personalities (accurately or not - it does'nt matter), opinions etc.. Bloody good read.
Very readable for a history review of the first century........1998-12-14
If you have ever wondered about the events that shaped leaders and everyman, thousands of years ago, this is an entertaining read, considering it is non-fiction. The real life events are presented in a way that brings characters into stories that otherwise would seem to be so long ago and nameless.
A great line was "At the dawn of the first century, the empire over which Augustus ruled,-with the aid of only a rudimentary civil service-encompassed nearly eighty million people and ranged across ten thousand miles of frontier..."
A good read for the context getting of where we came from to get where we are today as peoples on this globe.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining, stimulating & instructive!.......2006-03-15
What I like about this book is that the author has transformed such commonplace concepts as gravity, water, & breath into fun-to-read adventures. In 21 essays, each full of anecdotes & illustrations, the author explains remarkable everyday phenomena in simple, clear language. There are also interviews with some of the world's most brilliant scientists - Linus Pauling, Stephen Jay Gould, Edward Teller, Francis Crick - & dozens of mind boggling puzzles as well as insightful quotations.
What is the principal object of the author in creating all of the above?
In a nutshell, the author is just showing to all of us: how to be more aware of our own surroundings & how to play with our childhood sense of wonder. In the author's own words: This book is about the present, because it's about awareness: noticing, stopping, looking, heeding, remarking, observing, beholding, discerning, perceiving, asking, examining, probing, considering, pondering, weighing, appraising, studying...right now.
Over the years, I have come across only a handful of such unique books as continuation of my relentless search for better understanding of perceptual sensitivity & sensory acuity. I must say this one is one of the best books in the genre, because it is entertaining, stimulating and instructive! In fact, it has inspired me to create valuable learning experiences for participants in my creativity workshops.
Do you have the time to go and play? Come play with your childhood sense of wonder. Prepare to be astonished, to learn with this wonderful book!
There are two other good books that I would recommend to readers, in conjunction with this one:
- The Sense of Wonder, by Rachel Carson;
- Playful Perception: Choosing How to Experience Your World, by Herbert Leff;
