Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource.......2006-01-30
"The Global Citizen" is a MUST READ for anyone seeking to establish an international lifestyle. I especially liked the sections that allowed real people who've moved abroad the opportunity to write about their experiences. These "journal entries" gave me a lot of inspiration. The book is loaded with program information for study, voluteering and work abroad. There is a chapter on financing your journeys which offers information about scholarships and grants that I didn't even know existed! I highly recommend "The Global Citizen" for anyone serious about going abroad short-term or long-term.
Good introductory value, poor on details.......2004-09-11
If you are under 20, not sure what to do with your life and contemplating about how cool it is to travel to Europe and save the rain forests - this book is perfect for you (even better if you want to save rain forests in Europe). Then, if you are not from US, don't have kickass amount of money to spend or know exactly what you want - bypass this title.
The Global Citizen offers a lot of ways for an American to go abroad; if you live elsewhere, only 20% of all the suggestions are relevant to you. Of these 20%, most require significant investment. What's more important, neither of these ways is described in detail.
Large sections of this book are dedicated to the fine art of proving that 2 and 2 equals 4. For example, the author dedicates 2 or 3 pages to explanation why it pays to know languages others than English.
On the other hand, little to no useful tips are given on most important subjects, like convincing the foreign employer to hire you, or listing places with high expat concentrations, etc. Most of the work abroad opportunities are standard English teaching stuff - I don't need to buy a book to tell me about it, really.
The book is full of howlers. Page 199: 450 - 2550 British pounds are translated as 310 - 1767 US dollars (neat, huh?). Page 88: Arctic Odysseys provides high quality travel experiences in the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, Siberia and China (someone please find Arctic China for me). Page 213: the author discovers a new country: Moldova-Ukraine. And this is just a small part.
Again, good enough as introduction, many ideas, very low on details.
Inspirational Book!.......2004-05-17
This book is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone! The author writes on a personal level like she is talking to you and it is also written from a emotional level so it is easy to understand. This book gets you excited about all the possibilities and the author explains any fears you may have and how you can get over them and overall she gets the word across to never give up! She also gives e-mail adresses from other people who have experience travel. This is a great book, everyone can benefit from this.
Excellent Book!.......2004-02-25
The Global Citizen is an excellent book for anyone thinking of doing anything abroad! It covers a wide range of topics, from studying to volunteering abroad. The author provides practical information on how to identify your goal, approach it and then directs the reader on where to find more information on each individual topic. This book is very stimulating and most certainly motivating! A great buy!
the ONLY career guide for adventure seekers.......2003-05-06
The "Global Citizen" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to travel or work abroad. Most importantly for me, this book has a wealth of information on careers abroad that I had not thought of before. Most career guides are so narrow in scope that I rarely find much use in them because they are so "8-5" in nature.
The other cool thing about this book is that it's full of websites with info. on every aspect of living, working, or volunteering abroad.
I love the personal stories in the section "A Global Citizen's Perspective" because, as a traveler, you can really connect to the experience of the author and other people who have done what you want to do.
If you are looking for a a life changing adventure, then travel abroad. If you want to stay abroad, then get this book!!

Rambling, confusing.......2002-12-16
I found this book confusing. I understand the subject matter is complex, but the topic was complicated by a rambling style, lack of specific examples and too many quotes from the tax code. I admit I made it through only two chapters -- then I decided I needed to look for another book to help prepare for an overseas assignment. The book needs tighter editing to eliminate repetition, a Frequently Asked Questions section and realitic scenarios.
Book Description
Newly updated to include the latest revisions in IRS regulations and the 2002 setting of the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion at $80,000 per year, this guide details and explains the necessary physical presence and residence tests needed to claim this exclusion along with the tax rules, forms, and computations that must accompany it. Also clarified are the requirements of Section 911 and how to establish a foreign tax home from which occupational activities are based. Related matters such as preparing to move abroad, foreign moving expense rules, foreign tax credits, and special rules when working in U.S. possessions are also discussed so that the ultimate goal of saving as much money (tax free) as is possible can more easily be met.

Helpful for taxes.......2007-05-14
This book was a helpful guide for figuring out some of the many nuances of the tax laws associated with working abroad.

Book Description
Despite its crucial role in modern society, mathematization as a phenomenon has hardly been studied. The Dutch Central Planning Bureau (CPB) is an example of a powerful institute in the preparation of economic policy whose influence is largely based on their mathematical representations of the national economy. This book analyses the emergence of the Dutch Central Planning Bureau to shed light on two fundamental questions: how does a process of mathematization take place and what are its consequences? The Dutch case is compared with the emergence of planning and mathematization in France and Norway. The book shows that mathematical constructions are not objective facts but outcomes of complex intellectual, socio-economic, cultural and political processes. For example, the national economy didn't simply unveil its mathematical structure to us but it had to be configured in such a way that it could be described in macro-econometric models.

Book Description
Major changes have recently taken place in the value attached to components of milk. Although approximately half the energy in milk is contained in fat, fat is rapidly decreasing in value relative to protein. This has come about because of the increased availability of competitively-priced, plant-derived edible oils and because of the perceived health problems associated with animal fat in the human diet. Such changes have major implications for the dairy sector, particularly in developed countries. Against this background, this book presents a timely review of developments in milk production and consumption, of changes in milk component values, and of the opportunities that biotechnology provides to alter the composition of and add value to milk on the farm. The subject coverage is very broad, ranging from nutritional aspects of pastures and forages, to rumen microbiology, genetics and reproductive technologies, milk biochemistry and environmental implications. The book is based on a conference held in Wellington, New Zealand, in February 1996 and sponsored by the OECD and AgResearch. Contributors include leading research workers from North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The book provides an invaluable overview of the subject, suitable as a reference book for advanced students, researchers, and advisers in dairy science.

Book Description
The demonstrations capture interest, teach, inform, fascinate, amaze, and perhaps, most importantly, involve students in chemistry. Nowhere else will you find books that answer, "How come it happens? . . . Is it safe? . . . What do I do with all the stuff when the demo is over?"
Shakhashiri and his collaborators offer 282 chemical demonstrations arranged in 11 chapters. Each demonstration includes seven sections: a brief summary, a materials list, a step-by-step account of procedures to be used, an explanation of the hazards involved, information on how to store or dispose of the chemicals used, a discussion of the phenomena displayed and principles illustrated by the demonstration, and a list of references.
Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE FOR CHEMISTRY TEACHERS!.......2005-10-31
I am a first year teacher and this book has been the best investment I've made. I may have had to buy it with my own money, but it has been worth every cent. Lots of ideas are presented in this book and it gives really good ways to integrate the demonstrations to teach particular concepts. I plan to buy the other three books by this author.
All teachers of chemistry should have access to this book........2003-10-22
This is the first volume in Shakhashiri's unequalled Chemical Demonstrations series. There are over 80 demonstrations in this book, each one with a list of required materials, a detailed procedure, notes on hazards and disposal, a discussion of the chemical principles involved, and references. The demonstrations cover the areas of thermochemistry (Chapter 1), Chemiluminescence (Chapter 2), Polymers (Chapter 3), and Equilibria of Metal Ion Precipitates and Complexes (Chapter 4). Included in the introductory text is an article by Richard W. Ramette entitled "Exocharmic Reactions" which relates how chemical demonstrations for teaching purposes have evolved and what qualities the successful demonstrator should possess for maximum impact.
There is absolutely nothing so good as a demonstration for getting students interested in chemistry and keeping them interested. Demonstrations may take a bit of extra work on the part of the teacher, but they are worth the effort, and the effort is minimal when Shakhashiri has written such a magnificant collection of useful experiments.
This Book is Great!!!.......1999-02-15
I acutally love this book for chem demonstrations. Shakhashiri gives in depth explanations for all of his demonstrations and it is just a great book. I recommend this book to anyone who is doing any demonstrations.

Book Description
This work highlights emergent research in the area of quantum probability. Several papers present a qualitative analysis of quantum dynamical semigroups and new results on q-deformed oscillator algebras, while others stress the application of classical stochastic processes in quantum modelling. All of the contributions have been thoroughly refereed and are an outgrowth of an international workshop in Stochastic Analysis and Mathematical Physics. The book targets an audience of mathematical physicists as well as specialists in probability theory, stochastic analysis, and operator algebras.
Contributors to the volume include: R. Carbone, A.M. Chebotarev, M. Corgini, A.B. Cruzeiro, F. Fagnola, C. Fernández, J.C. García, A. Guichardet, E.B. Nielsen, R. Quezada, O. Rask, R. Rebolledo, K.B. Sinha, J.A. Van Casteren, W. von Waldenfels, L. Wu, J.C. Zambrini

Book Description
Best one-volume history brings the events, figures, and battles of monumental conflict vividly to life. Absorbing details of military campaigns, battlefield strategies and personalities revealed in an audacious style that carries readers breathlessly along from the day of Lincoln's inauguration to Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House.
Customer Reviews:
They don't write like this any more. Don't miss it!.......2006-06-09
I first read this book when I was about nine years old, having fished it out of my parents' bookcase to while away some idle hours. Eventually, I wore out its fragile binding and was left with a heap of pages until one day, on a visit to Washington DC, I was delighted to find a fresh copy in a second-hand bookstore. To this day, if I crave entertainment and inspiration, I take this book down from the shelf and open it at random. Whatever chapter - paragraph! - I choose is bound to shine.
Just how accurate or balanced Pratt's account of the Civil War is, I do not know. I have not read any other books about it. But he has made Grant, Lee, Lincoln, Stanton, Davis, McLellan, Hooker, Sherman, Sheridan, Bragg, Jackson, Stuart and dozens of others come alive for me.
Aged nine, I did not understand all the long words by any means. (What on earth was the "Dithyramb of Shiva", and what was an "Experiment in Tauromachy"?) But I loved them, and almost always figured out the meaning by the context.
In a way, Pratt made it possible for me to study history at university many years later. He inoculated me against the idea that history has to be boring, because I had such a stunning counter-example at the back of my mind. There are very few books of fiction that I have read that come anywhere near being so entertaining.
Anyone who hasn't read this book really ought to, if they have the slightest interest in military matters and delight in fine writing. Just one tip: if you can get hold of a hardback, it will last longer. The paperback gets fragile after a few readings, and the pages are apt to fall out unless you hold it very carefully.
Deserves a Galaxy of Stars!.......2004-07-28
What can I say about this book? Well, how about in a lifetime of reading many books on the Civil War, both good and great, this one stands head and shoulders above them all. While more ink than the blood that was spilled has been used by many others to explain this terrible war, Pratt managed to capture the essence of the conflict in a short, brilliant book.
Pratt was a military historian of the first rank, but was also known for clever and exciting high fantasy stories. Perhaps it was this versatility that honed his storytelling ability to the sharp edge that we see here. While not missing a single important detail of politics, causes, battles, and personalities, he weaves an engrossing tale from start to finish, and creates a solidly researched history that is also a page-turner. This book is a joy to the student of the Civil War, but also appeals to those with no particular interest in that conflict, solely on the merit of Pratt's tight storytelling.
This book was written in 1935, and much new material on the Civil War has surfaced since then. Others, such as Shelby Foote, Bruce Catton and James McPherson have written much longer and more comprehensive works on the war that are excellent in their own right. Yet this little book still shines out as a gem among them. With its solid scholarship, sharp storytelling, and precise choice of details, it is the first rate Cliff Notes to the Civil War.

This is the one to read!.......2001-12-18
I have the new edition of this book, I bought it soon as I saw it sitting on a store shelf, despite already having 5 or 6 copies of the old pocketbook sized editions. I love this book. If you are going to read only one history of the civil war, make it this one. If you are going to spend the rest of your life reading histories of the civil war, start with this one.
It would take thousands of words to express the reasons I love this book. But somehow that wouldn't be appropriate. What I will say is this:
Bruce Canton could spend two pages discribing a muddy campaign, and you will come away knowing it was muddy and what a loggistical problem that was. Shelby Foote could spend a chapter on a muddy campaingn and you will come away knowing it was muddy and how much the troops complaigned about it and maybe a funny incident or two. Fletcher Pratt could spend a paragraph or two on that campaign, and when done you'll notice your leg's hurt. Why? Because you didn't want to get mud on your couch.
I won't disagree with all other reviewers..........2001-10-11
This is, hands down, one of the best books on any topic I've ever read. Fletcher Pratt had a way with words that few equalled. But more important, he had a keen insight into the problem of getting us to understand the complexities of the events he discusses. After the fact, we often think that certain events were "inevitable" but Pratt does a wonderful job of showing us how contingent the Union victory was, even as late as Fall, 1864.
My favorite chapters are the early ones, where Pratt lays out the big picture of the war and discusses the lightning moves of diplomacy that kept Kentucky and Missouri in the Union and thereby gave the Union the strategic advantage. The Civil War was *the* time of decision for the USA--had things gone differently, our history and world history would have been very different. Pratt does a masterful job of bringing that to light.
A Short History of the Civil War.......2000-07-18
This is my second reading of this book. It is still as griping as the first time. Fletcher Pratt wrote a beautiful, moving account of a most tragic era in US History.

Product Description
This short history of the Civil War covers much of the technical detail of the war. It does, however, deal forthrightly with the ideological basis of the war. The two real questions asked by the war were--secession and slavery. Both were answered in such a way that they need never be asked again.

Book Description
1873. This is a short monograph about Feng Shui, the principle of humanity being in balance with its surroundings. Eitel, a missionary, who took a post in China, first brought Feng Shui to the attention of the western world over a century ago. Because of his Christian doctrine, Eitel is somewhat dismissive of Chinese culture, but he grudgingly admits that there may be some grain of truth in Feng Shui. Contents: The Laws of Nature; The Numerical Proportions of Nature; The Breath of Nature; The Forms and Outlines of Nature; and The History and Literature of Feng-shui.
