Book Description
With the rules often conflicting and confusing, and even the IRS offering disclaimers about the validity of its advice, it's no wonder that so many people are terrified of taxes. This annually revised guide, now in its fourth year, makes simple sense of this complex area. Experts Roy Lewis and Selena Maranjian have included all the recent tax law changes as well as assembled a wealth of tips for managing not only the yearly chore of tax filing but also day-to-day activities that have tax implications. Included is sound advice on investment-related tax issues; the 2001 tax cut; and how to maximize tax savings opportunities that come with marriage, children, education, retirement, buying a home, and running a home office. A tax calendar and resource section help readers plan for April 15 all year round.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference guide.......2002-01-01
Each year, with each new edition, this tax guide becomes more helpful. It's an excellent reference guide for most any tax question that you might have. It's written clearly and is easily understandable (and it is even humorous).

Written for ordinary mortals, not accountants or other tax experts, Tax Reform provides a brief historical portrait of the U.S. tax system, with emphasis on the twentieth century, and details the long history of tax revolts. Tax Reform also thoroughly examines the fundamentals of tax reform options, explains the political and public relations difficulties of tax reform, and reviews such current proposals as the flat tax, the value added tax, the green tax, and a national sales tax. The work concludes with an annotated bibliography of books, articles, films, and on- line resources.

Book Description
Millions of people are moving from rural areas to coastal cities. Meeting the basic human needs for protein foods in the future will be a difficult challenge. Fishery products are the world's most important source of animal protein, which has led to a doubling of the demand for fish since the
1950s. As we can not expect to catch more food from the sea, we must turn to farming the waters, not just hunting them. The new challenge for planners now is to accelerate aquaculture development and to plan for new production, making urban areas of production, particularly recycled urban
wastewater. This book includes papers from authors in the U.S., Europe, and Asia that review these developing issues from the perspective of both developed and developing countries.

When British archaeologists discovered a Viking ship burial at Sutton Hoo, Sussex, in the late 1930s, they were surprised to find no signs of human remains; only through the chemical study of the acidic soil could signs of a body be found. The use of chemistry has enabled archaeologists to pinpoint the origins of ancient Egyptian monuments, discover some causes for the decline of the Roman empire, and date the remains of the earliest protohominids. In Traces of the Past, chemist Lambert introduces readers to this happy alliance of science and history.
Book Description
Using tests such as carbon dating, color analysis, and elemental fingerprinting, chemists can determine what prehistoric humans ate, where the stones of Stonehenge came from, and if artifact is real or fake.
Traces of the Past takes us step by step through this process of discovery, as it helps reconstruct ancient trade routes-how did amber get from the Baltic area to Belize?-or discloses what prehistoric cultures were really like-were certain bowls for eating or for show? An entertaining and accessible book for any reader intrigued by the interplay of science and history.
Customer Reviews:
very interesting and useful.......2006-01-16
This is a new way to look and to study history and chemistry at the same time. It is written in an accesible language. I think is very useful element of motivation for students in different branches of chemistry: organic, inorganic, analytical, nuclear, etc.

Book Description
This special publication is a compilation of papers presented at the Drift Exploration in Glaciated Terrain Short Course held in conjunction with the 19th International Geochemical Exploration Symposium in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in April, 1999. The short course was sponsored by the Association of Exploration Geochemists. The volume focuses on the application of till geochemical and indicator mineral methods to mineral exploration in the glaciated terrain of Canada. The principles and examples described, however, have direct applications for explorationists working in glaciated parts of North America, northern Europe and Asia, as well as mountainous regions of South America. Mineral exploration in glaciated terrain requires an appreciation and understanding of glacial processes, surficial sediments, glacial history, and soil formation in addition to economic geology. The following papers address these issues and are organized to lead the reader from the general to the specific. The first half of the volume is an introduction to glaciated terrain. Sampling techniques are described, followed by reviews of indicator mineral methods used for diamond, gold, base-metal exploration. Lake sediment and biogeochemical methods are included to complement geochemical and indicator mineral methods. A paper describing the application of GIS methods to till geochemical data has also been included, reflecting the importance of data interpretation and display as essential parts of regional geochemical surveys. The second half of the volume consists of a series of case studies addressing each of the three major glaciated terrains of Canada: flat lying Shield terrain of central and northern Canada, rugged mountainous terrain of the western Canadian Cordillera and the rounded mountains of Appalachia on the east coast.
Readership: Professionals and Academics in the mineral exploration industry, especially diamond exploration. Suitable for undergraduates and above.

Book Description
The Hitler Youth was not in itself a military formation, but a movement that sought to inculcate Nazi ideology upon German youth. Nevertheless, paramilitary training formed an important part of this education, especially given the Nazi veneration of the soldier as the epitome of Germanic manhood; and even some members of the Bund Deutscher Mädel, the Hitler Youth organization for girls, became combatants in the final stages of the war. This book explores how the preliminary training that German youth underwent in the Hitler Youth prepared them for service in the armed forces, and how Hitler Youth members became directly involved in military service under the pressure of total war.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent work within Osprey's limitations.......2006-12-08
I have to strenuously disagree with Chris Crawford's review. Crawford seems to believe that this book purports to be THE reference work on the Hitler Youth movement, something which it was clearly never intended to be. As the publisher's website informs us "Osprey's Warrior series is an ideal reference resource for re-enactors, military history enthusiasts, model makers and wargamers." Many books in the Warrior series, including this one, are worthwhile for academic historians, but that is not the readership at which they are aimed.
Crawford criticises the book for its lack of exhaustive academic quality referencing, a criticism which simply fails to appreciate that the book is aimed at a popular, rather than an academic, audience; extensive referencing would actually turn away most of the potential market for a book of this type. It is also quite inappropriate to criticise the author, Alan Dearn, for the referencing since the publisher, not the author, has determined the referencing style for the series. Granted there are a couple of minor factual mistakes, but I have yet to find a book aimed at the "military enthusiast" market that does not contain similar errors. Let's face it, Crawford's own review manages to misspell the name of the author of this book.
For Crawford to compare a book such as this to something like Littlejohn's 377 page tome is to do disservice to both books; Dearn's work is not a comprehensive history of the Hitler Youth, but it does not claim to be. I think it fulfils its purpose admirably.
fan-bloody-tastic.......2006-06-18
booo...chris crawford, i thought that this book was highly informative and entertaining (the pictures are great!). Although there are minor discrepancies in the description of the Hitler youths uniforms, in the grand scheme of things this is unimportant because it was not in any way the point of the book. I'm sure with hindsight Dearn is hitting himself for not checking his source, but we're all human. I am myself a history student and i am currently researching for my PhD, i thought this book was GREAT, hooray for Alan Dearn.
agreed..........2006-06-16
I'll have to agree with Tara here. I am personally fascinated by this particular period in history, and have studied it extensively. While, ideally, this is best read within the vast array of literature which exists on the topic (Littlejohn's is particularly excellent), I found this to be a highly worthwhile study into the sociological apsects of the Hitler Youth. Pedantic nuances aside, I would recommend this book to any person with a similar interest in such features of Hitler's Germany.
Osprey's latest ... but not greatest.......2006-06-09
As a historian interested in this particular aspect of the Third Reich, I found Alan Dearn's book very disappointing. It does not appear like he has done a lot of in-depth research, and while some of the photos in the book are lovely (particularly loved the one to go along with Maria's story at the end of the book), they are not enough to make up for the lack of factual information.
"The Hitler Youth 1933 - 45" gives a brief general overview of the Hitler Youth, its organization, tasks, and uniforms. As such, Dearn has included information on the sections of the Hitler Youth - the Jungvolk, the Hitler Youth, the Jungmaedel, and the League of German Girls. This is great for a quick "starter" book if you have not researched anything on the subject before, but for those with a serious interest, it will be disappointing.
Dearn's research did not strike me as particularly well done. In some instances he cites former leaders or members remembering one thing or another, but does not give any sources for those recollections, such as the names of the former members or the publications he is quoting. In his text on the BDM, particularly, is where this lack of sources becomes apparent. There only source he cites on BDM subjects is Melita Maschmann's autobiography "Fazit".
Dearn's information also shows gaping holes and misunderstandings. For example, he writes that girls in the BDM were not awarded the black neckerchief until they transferred from the Jungmaedel into the League at age 14. In fact, the BDM's own manuals state quite plainly that the neckerchief was awarded after completing the Jungmaedel challenge (said challenge was completed within the first 6 months after joining at the age of 10).
Elsewhere he carries on a common misunderstanding about the traditions bar on the Gau insignia as having "been awarded to all units that were in existence prior to 1933". I'm not sure where this mistake began because it is printed in other books on the Hitler Youth as well and Dearn has likely just copied it as "true" from one of those secondary sources. However, primary period sources give the following information: "The traditions triangle was worn by all members of the Hitler Youth and BDM who, prior to 30. January 1933 (or in the case of groups outside the Reich, a date prior to their respective regions' return to the German Reich), been a member of the Hitler Youth, BDM, Nazi party or any of their groups." (Aufbau und Abzeichen der Hitlerjugend, published by Youth Leadership Staff)
There are a lot of problems with Dearn's "Hitler Youth" book, which make me start to wonder whether Osprey actually has any editing or fact-checking process before publishing a book. Past publications on Third Reich subjects have not fared better than Dearne's book when it came to facts.
My review would be, save your money and spend it on a different book about the Hitler Youth instead. Maybe David Littlejohn's "The Hitler Youth". While that one also includes some minor mistakes, as a whole, it is much better researched and includes a lot more information.

The short and sweet story of the 12th SS Hitlerjugend.......2006-05-11
This is a great book if you can get your hands on it. Is hardcover-small format and no dust jacket. If covers the complete beginning of the division to the end in Hungary. The pages are of great quality and the photos clear and crisp of which there are a lot for a small book similar in appearance to Bender products. Once again very informative and makes a great addition to Hubert Meyer's large volume. I have read hundreds of books on the Waffen SS but only count a small percentage worth keeping and re-reading and this is one. This book is hard to find and if you come across a clean edition jump on it and you won't be disappointed.

Book Description
This final volume of the Short Oxford History of France explores the huge transformations which have taken place in the areas of politics, society, and culture between the late nineteenth and the end of the twentieth centuries. A leading team of historians provide a re-evaluation of modern French history based on a new, collaborative approach which offers fresh insights on such themes as economic and social change, women, intellectuals and culture, religion and secularization, as well as an authoritative overview of politics and international relations. The book emphasises throughout what was different about the French experience in relation to other western democracies, and what was distinctive about French political culture and the French sense of national identity.

In their mission to continue the public subsidy of their products, the rocket and nuclear power executives are putting people around the world at risk. As we know, these space shots are unreliable (and they also chew up another chunk of the ozone layer with their exhaust), and if the Prometheus Project continues, they will be carrying loads of plutonium that will rain down on the earth during another explosion. In fact, the Challenger was scheduled to have several pounds of plutonium on board during the launch that would've followed its explosion.
Our space program has received an endless wave of good publicity - Boeing and Lockheed fund think tanks like the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, NPR chit-chats with astronauts in space, and movies like "The Right Stuff" and the Tom Hanks film put the best spin possible on this wasteful and environmentally appalling effort to do god knows what in space (much of what's being done at NASA is classified military projects violating various treaties).
Reading this important book reminds one of the Bob Marley verse from his song "So Much Trouble in the World" - See men sailing on an ego trip/Blast off on a space ship/A million miles from reality/No care for you, no care for me.
Bravo to Mr. Grossman for puncturing the endless romanticization of this reckless project.
Grossman does additional important work through his tv project, EnviroVideo.
Ignorance At Its Utmost.......2000-11-05
The Wrong Stuff clearly shows that uninformed Americans are apt to believe a gross distortion of the truth, so long as it sounds scary and apocalyptic. This book sounds good for a science fiction, conspiracy theory. The book definitely is a thriller, fictitious all the way, designed to scare and outrage the reader. Sadly, the book is poorly researched and has a very faulty logic. If one is serious about the issue, they will do a risk-benefit analysis surrounding nuclear vs. solar vs. chemical energy sources. Anyone who thinks a deep-space satellite or probe could obtain enough power from solar cells is sadly mistaken, unless the power requirements were absolutely minimal or the solar cells enormous (and prohibitively expensive). Quite the reverse of this book, I'm shocked NASA hasn't resorted to using nuclear power more often in light of its obvious benefits. If you want a clearer understanding as to why Americans are sadly misinformed and generally against the use of nuclear power, read this book. Otherwise, don't waste your time. It is obvious the subject and style of this book was meant to be juicy (albeit often times false) in order to sell books. After all, telling everyone their safe doesn't make for a thrilling, good-selling book.
Wow - great stuff!.......1998-12-15
This extraordinary book keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through. It is gripping, shocking and thought-provoking. Gives an alternative, blacker, side to human endeavours in space. Everyone should read it - our lives may depend upon it.
Dumb.......1998-10-29
If you like raving paranoid conspiracy theories, this one might be for you. It seemed poorly researched with big gaps in logic to me. Not enough plot to be science fiction, not enough facts to be journalism. Doesn't hold a candle to Tom Wolfe's _The Right Stuff_, which it is obviously (but unsuccessfully) trying to emulate.
Describes America's space weapons program.......1998-08-06
THE WRONG STUFF, by Karl Grossman (Common Courage Press, 1997) is a powerful, extremely well-referenced condemnation of the American Space Program's nuclear threat to our planet.
It reads like a thriller, describing one lie and obfuscation of the facts after another until, by the end, the real purpose of America's thrust into space becomes crystal-clear: World domination at all costs, regardless of the potential for destruction of the environment.
This book should be required reading for all space enthusiasts who blindly follow NASA's version of what the purpose of our space policies are.
A remarkable achievement by one of America's finest Investigative Reporters.
