Why is the stock market booming? And why is it expected to triple and quadruple in value over the next 10 years? Why
"This is one of the best-researched books on demographics I have ever read!"
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and Informative.......2005-12-30
Very entertaining book to read. Written in the Creative Nonfiction style like The Richest Man in Babylon and The Wealthy Barber.
Story uses a fictional Baby Boomer family who are educated about the Baby Boomer generation and financial planning by two professors who study the Baby Boomers.
The financial planning education does hit most of the basic points of financial planning (Use automatic savings methods to save at least 10% of income, invest in the stock market, and use asset allocation strategies). As an Index Fund fan, I would have liked to have seen a plug about the advantages of Index Funds over actively managed funds.
The author's prediction, made sometime before the 1998 book publication date, that real estate prices would drop significantly, has not proven correct. Fueled by relatively low home mortgage interest rates, real estate has boomed in most of the U.S. between 1998 and 2005. It will be interesting to see if U.S. real estate home values stagnate or decline between 2005 and 2020.
As a U.S. stock market investor, it was great to see the author's prediction the stock market will do well until 2020-2025. After 2020, the author predicts the U.S. stock market will stagnate for 20 years as the Boomers shift from stocks to bonds to lower risk and spend their assets in their retirement. Although it was soothing to hear the stock market won't crash in 2020, I'm not convinced we are smart enough to know how it will really play out 15 years from now.
The author's prediction of U.S. interest rates staying low over the next 20 years seems to be coming true so far. As Baby Boomers reach middle age, they start saving for retirement. Some of their savings will go into fixed rate investments, driving down the returns. Traditional asset allocation has called for some percentage of the portfolio to be invested in bonds. If interest rates (or bond yields) are going to stay inordinately low the next 20 years compared to historical bond yields, then maybe bonds should be replaced by blue chip stocks paying good dividends. Food for thought.
It would also have been nice to see more predictions of what areas and companies will boom as the Baby Boomers age. The real trick is to identify companies that will benefit from the aging boomers before other investors identify them so they can be purchased at a relatively low price.
All in all, a very informative and entertaining book. I'm not convinced that demographics alone cause every change in U.S. society, but it is one major factor.
I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Wealth of Experience: Real Investors on what Works and What Doesn't, Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Life and Beat the Pros, The Coffeehouse Investor, and the Armchair Millionaire.
How To Prosper From The Aging Baby Boom.......2002-10-17
"The Pig and the Python" is an easy to read, easy to grasp book about a topic that has trouble maintaining its readers attention. If you know best selling "The Wealthy Barber" by David Chilton, this book goes through the same format. This book will make look to the future and the opportunities that it possesses. If you are interested in investing, worried about retirement, this book is just for you. And this is also a good reading for financial consultants. It find out how to prosper from the aging baby boom. Recommend!
AN AWESOME FIANCIAL/ECONOMICS BOOK FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON.......1999-07-08
THIS BOOK IS EASY TO READ AND COMPREHEND, AND IT IS VERY INFORMATIVE. IT WAS GREAT.
Wonderful, Just Wonderful!.......1999-03-27
Being in the financial service field, sometimes understanding your client's need and their goals can be overwhelming when you talk to them about long term planning. Especially in times of our current economy and the market, feeling what decisions I will make personally and what I experience my client makes can be almost paralyzing. I found this book to be a very, very big eye opener as to what our future may look like years from now. I'm sure like many of you, I've always asked the questions of why are some things so popular now, why are interest rates so low, why is the stock market so bullish, and why are so many American families struggling to make ends meet. I found this book to be a powerful planning tool for my own future and those of others. As the decades come, I can anticipate and understand the changes that would possibility affect our lives. Because in my field we serve our clients to create more wealth for families, this book gives me confidence to follow this mission.
Padded magazine article belabors the obvious.......1998-09-11
This book takes a decent short article and expands it to book length, without adding much balance or evidence to justify the greater length. While it should be obvious that the size of the boomer generation has been driving the American economy for years, the authors ignore or minimize the numerous alternative explanations and countervailing effects that are also at work. Unfortunately, our world cannot be reduced to a single explanatory factor. While the boom is part of the mix, I feel the book over-promises the reader about how to prosper. Much of its content is just another version of the conventional wisdom on personal finance, packaged in a lame family-interest story. This book may make you feel better, but I'm not sure it will help you prosper -- that is, if you've been paying much attention these last 50 years or so.

Book Description
"The new Year 0 had just begun and leashes were all the rage. What was so recently a daring accessory of the rich and trendy was now a staple among the masses. 'So you'll always know where your mind is' was perhaps the most ubiquitous of marketing slogans, appearing on ZV's and message boards everywhere."
Although revolving largely around the mundane and inane elements of future (or is it current?) society, Evolution is essentially concerned with time, life, and love, and how annoying they can all be. Alternately funny and poignant, often both simultaneously, Evolution may reasonably be seen as either a comedy with tragic elements or a tragedy with comic elements, depending upon your existential point of view and what you had for breakfast.
You may at times have difficulty deciding whether Evolution is best understood as a meaningless farce or a cautionary tale, a biting satire or a sentimental memoir. Of course, the question then becomes: Why are you always thinking about boxes?

Book Description
“I was always happy to see first light.
By first light it was over . . . for a while.”
–from Down South
There were a lot of ways to get killed in Vietnam. You could get “zapped,” “dinged,” “burned,” “popped,” “smoked,” or “wasted.” Marine 2nd Lt. William H. Hardwick was familiar with all of them because, unlike most USMC artillery officers–who waged their war from bunkers inside protected compounds–Hardwick as a forward observer fought alongside rifle companies and lived like a grunt for most of his thirteen-month tour.
In Okinawa, Vietnam was referred to as “Down South,” and in 1968, “Down South” was a bad place to be. Hardwick did it all–walking point, springing ambushes, capturing prisoners, and spending months in the bush surrounded by crack NVA troops. At times the attacking enemy was so close, Hardwick had to call in air strikes almost on top of the Marines themselves just so they could survive. William Hardwick volunteered to fight as one of the few, the proud, the Marines.
Customer Reviews:
A Marine in Vietnam........2006-10-17
I have read a lot of Vietnam war paperbacks. Hardwick did a good job for his first book, and I generally enjoyed the read. However, there are many of these books in the book stores. This is the first one that I have read which takes the point of view of a forward observer for arty. I learned some new perspectives from his point of view. Generally in all these books, America puts its young men (and women) at risk. We need to be careful if these policies are just.
Hardwick came to hate the war. He did some pretty stupid things in the war. One was targeting the farmer with bombs. The farmer and his water buffalo may have been in restricted territory, but that didn't give him the right to drop a bomb on him. Hardwick came to realize the hopelessness of this war. An OK read of the Vietnam War.
A Must Read.......2005-08-11
This is a must read for all individuals. For those of us who did not serve in Viet Nam, this book puts you on the front line. Very well written, I couldn't put the book down.
A guided tour of hell.......2004-08-24
This is the single best book I have read yet of the Marine experience in Viet Nam. Hardwick does an outstanding job of communicating the episodes of sheer terror that punctuated the more routine aspects of his tour. Uncommon valor is described as unremarkable, a refreshing change from the current political diatribe.

From the cloisters of Normandy and the pillaged libraries of Italy to the Sea of Galilee and the frozen passes of the Alps, this history chronicles the overlap of science, survival, and writing in the life of Jacques-Julien Houtou de Labillardière, an 18th-century traveler and naturalist. Most famous for his international bestseller Relation, which helped usher the southern continent into the European imagination, Labillardière also authored flora manuals such as Novae Hollandiae. This comprehensive study offers archival notes, personal correspondence, and observations about Labillardière's impact on modern society.

Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters
ASIN: 0192805819 |
Book Description
The word germ is defined as 'a microbe that causes disease'. The vast majority of microbes do not infect us at all: it is pathogens that make us ill. These include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, worms, and prions. Living with Germs not only looks at all of these in detail, but also at the defence mechanisms by which we come to terms with them, whether by eliminating them, stopping them from eliminating us, or simply learning to live with them. This is the first book to look at the subject of immunology in a relevant and approachable style. Using anecdotal and autobiographical material, John Playfair has produced a lively, well-written, and up-to-date look at immunology. Timely and topical, this will appeal to all those who want to know the facts behind the 'germ' scare stories.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and accessible.......2007-07-16
John Playfair has done an excellent job with this book. Through a clever use of analogy and anecdote, he makes immunology understantable without feeling dumbed down. The first example that comes to mind is the MHC - major histocompatibility complex - which move material from the interior of a cell to the surface, allowing other immune cells to see what is going on inside the cell. Playfair describes the MHC as a "molecular haulage contractor", and the concept immediately stuck in my mind.
The book starts out with a reality check. We are primed to think that the microscopic world exists solely to make life miserable for humans. This is perhaps a remnant of the ancient religious idea that diseases are a punishment from God. In fact, microbial life forms are simply trying to survive and reproduce, just like us. Most microbes do not cause humans harm, and some are even beneficial to us. Playfair immediately distinguishes the pathogens, those microbes that cause harm to humans, from the rest of the microbial world. He then explains the major groups of pathogen, the bacteria, the virus, the protozoa and the prion.
Intermingled with the story of the immune system is the story of medical history. Playfair describes the antics, quarrels, and mistakes of the great players in immunology: Koch and Pasteur were colleagues somewhat in the spirit of Leibniz and Newton. Like Newton, Pasteur has become the most famous, certainly I remember learning about his "discovery" of bacteria and invention of Pasteurization in school, yet I can't remember hearing much about Koch. Playfair give us several stories of the two men, including their brave (and sometimes reckless) efforts to protect humanity against anthrax and rabies.
The immune system is a complex subject, and after reading this book you will understand more about why this is so. The system has evolved to fight off the pathogens without destroying the body's own cells, and the pathogens have themselves evolved. This necessarily leads to a series of comprimises, and our defenses against the pathogens are multi-faceted, there is no silver bullet to defeat the germs. This balance can sometimes be subtly or not so subtly wrong, leading to immunodeficiency or auto-immune disease.
Fortunately for most of us, with the help of modern medicine we can expect to beat the pathogens in our own lives. There is a note of optimism in the book, and reading it left me impressed by the ability of our bodies to keep us healthy, mostly without us really noticing. The more depressing topics in infectious disease, such as bird flu and the potential return of smallpox, are discussed briefly, but the book does not dwell on speculation. The section on how flu evolves is quite interesting. Playfair explores why flu remains an ongoing problem and explains the meaning behind the ominous code name HN51 (the dreaded "bird flu"). But in the end, as Playfair notes in his introduction, "If I have a message at all, it is simply that you are bound to get infections from time to time, and you are better off knowing something about what is going on. You can then at least decide what to do on the basis of fact and not fear or fantasy."
