Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2004-09-21
The title of this book is misleading. Only one chapter in the entire book deals with hedged scale trading and to sum it up the author says..."buy puts". Brilliant. The rest of the book describes scale trading (poorly) and fundamental analysis. If you want to learn about scale trading go to the source. Look at Robert Weist's, "You Can't Loose Trading Commodities". Weist does a much better job describing this trading technique. This book was a real disappointment and waste of money (in my opinion).
Currently the definitive work.......2002-11-02
Mr. McCaffery writes with clarity and leads the reader surely towards a grasp of this somewhat arcane futures trading strategy. Scale trading with options means : buying (or shorting) a hedged commodity with the expectation that the price will revert to its mean within a certain period of time.
Specifically, you buy a commodity (sugar, soybeans, oil, etc.) that's trading toward its historic lows. You purchase put options to put a floor under the trade (limiting your risk), and scale into the trade (buy more futures at pre-determined intervals) if the price continues to fall. You are relying on the near certainty that the price must eventually rise. If you hold long enough and if all goes as it should (i.e., you execute), you will make a boatload of money in the eventuality. Obviously, attempting to scale trade a stock, which may have no tangible worth (think "Enron") is a bad idea, hence the focus on commodities futures.
"Understanding Hedged Scale Trading" offers a relatively user-friendly technique for playing in the pits. After explaining how the futures markets work, the author gets right down to the real nitty-gritty: deciding which commodities to trade, the mechanics of trading futures, and how to buy more time (roll over your position). There is even a short treatise on technical analysis.
According to the publisher (and my Amazon search), this is the only comprehensive book on hedged scale trading currently available. Good thing that it's a keeper.

Book Description
This special volume contains a selection of papers that were presented as part of the Seventh International Symposium on Natural and Man-Made Hazards (HAZARDS-98), held in Chania, Crete Island, Greece, during May 1998. The Symposium attracted broad international interest because many cases of natural disaster events, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, storm surges, forest fires, etc., that occurred in several parts of the world during the 1990s were presented not only for their physics but also from the point of view of their impact on society and their environmental consequences. Among these cases are the 1997 Red River Valley flood in Canada and the large earthquake of 18 November 1997, in Zakynthos, Greece. In addition, the volume contains contributions that apply advanced statistical methods and artificial intelligence techniques, such as GIS, and systems analysis to approach the description of physical processes, the discrimination of experimental data and the assessment and management of risk.
Audience: This volume forms an excellent reference for scientists, students, engineers, the insurance industry, authorities specializing in public safety and natural hazards preparedness and mitigation plans.

Book Description
The National Security Council (NSC) is the most important formal institution in the U.S. government for the creation and implementation of foreign and defense policy. The Council's four principal members--the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense--are responsible for incredibly far-reaching decisions regarding war and peace, diplomacy, international trade, and covert operations. Despite its obvious importance, the NSC has been subject to relatively little scholarly scrutiny, and therefore remains misunderstood by most international relations students. Fateful Decisions: Inside the National Security Council provides students with valuable insights into the origins, workings, strengths, and weaknesses of the NSC. Covering the period from 1947 to 2003, Fateful Decisions features seminal articles, essays, and documents drawn from a variety of sources. The book presents and illuminates several obscure documents regarding the beginning of the NSC and its early years. It then examines the transformation of the NSC from a newly established, and initially ignored, advisory committee to the nation's premier forum for national security deliberations. The selections--written by prominent scholars, journalists, and practitioners--offer revealing coverage of major topics, such as key challenges to the NSC and the role of the NSC in a post-Cold War environment. The articles also discuss the rise of the National Security Adviser to a position of prominence and provide profiles of those who have held the position, including McGeorge Bundy, Henry Kissinger, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Brent Scowcroft, Samuel Berger, Colin Powell, and Condoleezza Rice. Chronicling the performance of the NSC over the years, Fateful Decisions dissects both its successes and its failures--from the Cuban Missile Crisis through the Iran-contra affair, to the current war against global terrorism--and offers reform proposals to improve the Council's performance. It is ideal for courses on the NSC, national security decision-making, and U.S. foreign policy.

Updated Improved Version, But Dropped Some Good Stuff.......2005-04-21
This is an updated and improved version of the 1988 version, "Decisions of the Highest Order: Perspectives on the National Security Council," a book that remains, in its original form, a gold standard in the field.
The new improved version is both that--new and improved, with updated perspectives all the way into the first Bush Administration, recognizing the end of the Cold War and the new Global War on Terror, and I venture to say there is no finer book available for orienting both undergraduate and graduate students--as well as mid-career adult students--with respect to the vital role that the National Security Council plays in orchestrating Americas foreign and national security policies.
I have just two modest criticisms, both easily addressed through the use of other readings, but which would take this excellent book to a full five stars if the next edition integrated more material:
1) The original had some really excellent pieces Disorders and on Remedies, and the new version, while more timely and current, has left some useful historical perspectives on the cutting room floor. I would have preferred that the editors add as they have, but with less deletion from the past.
2) The book still has the flavor of the Cold War in that the NSC is looked upon as a largely military "big stick" get our way in the national security arena book, and it does not orient its readers to the full range of national capabilities, all of the instruments of national power including the economic, cultural, and religious. It does not fully reflect the growing role of non-state actors and the emerging appreciation for national security as a multi-cultural arena in which non-governmental organizations such as Doctors without Borders, and Chambers of Commerce, have at least as much to contribute to stabilization and reconstruction as do the U.S. Armed Forces.
In my view, this book is the standard, but I would like to see a third edition that addresses these last two points.

Book Description
From Karen Armstrong, the bestselling author of A History of God and The Spiral Staircase, comes this extraordinary investigation of a critical moment in the evolution of religious thought.
In the ninth century BCE, events in four regions of the civilized world led to the rise of religious traditions that have endured to the present day--the development of Confucianism and Daoism in China, Hinduism and Buddhism in India, monotheism in Israel, and philosophical rationalism in Greece. Armstrong, one of our most prominent religious scholars, examines how these traditions began in response to the violence of their time. Studying figures as diverse as the Buddha and Socrates, Confucius and Jeremiah, Armstrong reveals how these still enduring philosophies can help address our contemporary problems.
Customer Reviews:
Data overload........2007-09-17
Here you will find the history, philosophy, and religion of China, India, Greece and the Hebrew people in the millennium preceding the New Era, plus a little information on Christianity and Islam, all packed in 480 pages. There is no doubt that Ms. Armstrong is very knowledgeable; as I also would be now, if I could only remember all this stuff. It is not only the density of the matter that makes it hard reading, but also all the Chinese and Indian names of people, creeds, and philosophies. Most of them are unpronounceable, yet you are supposed to remember them because, after introducing them, the author uses them when explaining later points. Like when she applies the Indian word brahmodya (which sounds very Greek) to describe what the concept of the Christian Trinity is supposed to accomplish.
Ms. Armstrong argues in her book that in these four geographic areas the great philosophies dealing with people's compassionate behavior towards each other (the Golden Rule) first came to prominence and then fell again into disfavor at, roughly, the same time. She traces this history of rise and fall by dividing the entire time period in approximately 100-year segments and covering the events that took place in each locality during that time segment. But, although jumping from area to area during the description helps make comparisons, it does make it harder for the reader to keep track of the serial evolution of each philosophy, not to mention remembering the nomenclature.
All in all, this book presents excellent information; but it is not an easy read, and you may have to do some backtracking every now and then to refresh your memory.
(The writer is the author of "Christianity without Fairy Tales: When Science and Religion Merge," and of the forthcoming, "The Way of the Butterfly: A Scientific Speculation on God and the Hereafter.")
A good but long read........2007-09-11
This book is definitely worth reading for anyone interested in how mankind developed our religious/moral belief systems. She writes well and tries to combine a wide range of historical ethical trends under one umbrella theme. Originally a devout Catholic, then non-believer, now a "freelance monotheists" Karen provides a nice objective overview of how four great societies came to find the Golden rule (do unto others as you would want done to you) independently during the axial age. Some interesting topics are how Judaism came to believe in only one god when gods were a dime a dozen. And how the Buddha thought organized religions were a form of collective egotism, and that we should focus on this world and not the afterlife. While 99% of the book deals with religions and Greek logic before JC and Muhammad appeared, it does give a nice perspective on these two recent religions towards the end. Some consider religion a raft used to cross a river to a land of higher moral and spiritual enlightenment. The question is, when you reach that land, do you carry that raft on your back. Or, do you let it go and take another path in your journey through life. Note that the book is a long read and not a page turner.
Historic Tapastry of Mankind's Relation to the Divine........2007-09-03
This book weaves a unified perspective with the basic threads of world religions. Karen Armstong demonstrates through detailed research, how mankind has established its relationship with the divine. Her insight reveals the personality of a four major world cultures and their spiritual growth towards the ideal. Thank you Karen Armstrong for your dedicated pursuit in bringing this understanding to our world.
An important book on spiritual thought.......2007-09-02
In the Great Transformation, Karen Armstrong traces the origins and development of spiritual thought during the Axial Age. The Axial Age was a period between approximately 900 - 200 BC, in which new philosophical and religious concepts emerged in four disparate regions - namely China, India, Israel and Greece - and which still have a lasting impact on our world today.
Armstrong does an admirable job of expounding the political and social situations of the period, and how they eventually developed into the new schools of thought. Although the situations in the four regions are highly different, they share some striking similarities as well. The Axial Age was a very violent and unstable period, and the new schools of thought are all arisen from the same basic need for a better life, in which compassion, understanding and tolerance all play an important role.
Through all this, Armstrong attempts to impart a valuable lesson which we would do well to heed in our time and age. Instead of focusing on the differences between the different religions, we would do well to remember that these differences evolved out of the very particular needs and situations of the people of that time, but that they ultimately all share the common ideals of compassion, understanding and tolerance. Religious thought should not be dogmatic, but should rather be a guide towards achieving those ideals.
Or to use one of Buddha's metaphors in the book: "In just the same way my teachings are like a raft, to be used to cross the river and not to be held on to."
A must read book!.......2007-07-26
I really loved this book, and it is a must in any serious library.
This is a book to read and reread several times in order to really understand the roots of the religions of the world. Why did prophets come to our aid? Who are prophets in the first place? Are philosophers like Plato and Aristotle prophets? What about Confucius and the Buddha, are they prophets? Who determines who is a prophet and who is not? And when it comes to prophets, who is right and who is wrong?
Not all prophets preached the same message, and not all teachings spanned the test of time. Buddha, for example, did not believe in a monotheistic God. The Greeks believed in many gods. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, on the other hand, believe in one God, though they call Him by different names. The earliest Greek religions rewarded warriors for indiscriminate conquests, while latter religions like Christianity and Islam forbade unprovoked wars and conquests. Some prophets, like Jesus for example, preached to leave all worldly possessions and ambitions behind and follow him to the way of God. Buddha too left his newlywed bride and his newly born child to search for enlightenment, and together with his followers begged for food and lived almost naked during their entire spiritual journey. Islam and Judaism, on the other hand, place great importance on family life and one's role in society. Abandoning one's family is condoned in both Judaism and Islam.
Is there such a thing as a right and a wrong religion? And which religion should one follow? Should one choose his religion or is religion chosen for a person at birth?
This is a really fascinating book that will leave you bombarded with many questions. Karen Armstrong shows how all religions differ in their roots and motivation, yet in a subtle way are very similar. You will learn of many early religions such as Zoroastrianism.
Zoroastrianism is the religion and philosophy based on the teachings ascribed to the prophet Zoroaster (also known as Zarathustra or Zartosht). I mentioned here because some scholars have suggested that Zoroastrianism was where the first prophet of a monotheistic faith arose. It is probably the oldest of the revealed creedal religions. Scholars believe that Zoroastrianism had more influence on mankind both directly and indirectly than any other faith. It was once the dominant religion of much of Iran. As of 2007 the faith has dwindled to small numbers; some sources suggest that it is practiced by fewer than 200,000 worldwide, with its largest centers in India and Iran.
One thing is common to all religions and spiritual movements: they all sprang from social unrest and injustice during a period known as the axial age. In case you are wondering what the "axial age" is, the philosopher Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) first originated the term in his book entitled The Origin and Goal of History (published in 1949): " ... In the years centering around 500 B.C. -- from 800 to 200 -- the spiritual foundations of humanity were laid simultaneously and independently in China, India, Persia, Palestine and Greece. And these are the foundations upon which humanity still subsists today."
This book is easy to read and a pleasure to devour. I highly recommend it! But be forewarned: you will never look at your religion the same way again!

Book Description
The question of consciousness is perhaps the most significant problem still unsolved by science. In Inner Presence, Antti Revonsuo proposes a novel approach to the study of consciousness that integrates findings from philosophy, psychology, and cognitive neuroscience into a coherent theoretical framework. Arguing that any fruitful scientific approach to the problem must consider both the subjective psychological reality of consciousness and the objective neurobiological reality, Revonsuo proposes that the best strategy for discovering the connection between these two realities is one of "biological realism," using tools of the empirical biological sciences. This approach, which he calls the "biological research program," provides a theoretical and philosophical foundation that contemporary study of consciousness lacks.
Revonsuo coins the term "world simulation metaphor" and uses this metaphor to develop a powerful way of thinking about consciousness as a biological system in the brain. This leads him to propose that the dreaming brain and visual consciousness are ideal model systems for empirical consciousness research. He offers a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of consciousness research and defends his approach against currently popular philosophical views, in particular against approaches that deny or externalize phenomenal consciousness, or claim that brain activity is not sufficient for consciousness. He systematically examines the principal issues in the science of consciousness -- the contents of consciousness, the unity of consciousness and the binding problem, the explanatory gap and the neural correlates of consciousness, and the causal powers and function of consciousness.
Revonsuo draws together empirical data from a wide variety of sources, including dream research, brain imaging, neuropsychology, and evolutionary psychology, into the theoretical framework of the biological research program, thus pointing the way toward a unified biological science of consciousness. Applying imaginative thought experiments, Inner Presence reaches beyond the current state-of-the-art, revealing how the problem of consciousness may eventually be solved by future science.
