Absolutely,possitively the best book I have ever read in my entire life. Very descriptive and it has a good theme.My two favorite characters are probably Adam and Pheobe. I like them because-when put together in a paragraph-they are very funny.

Great story line, Makes you think, Bad language.......2007-07-23

OK so I know that my opinions tend to be backward in today's society, but I really didn't appreciate the fact that the author felt the need to put vulgarity in this book.
The story line was great, it made me think. It made me take consideration to how the educational system really runs. But I really don't want my children reading words that I don't want them saying. I know that there isn't much out there anymore that doesn't have foul language in it. But if more authors wouldn't spoil a great story with language there would be.

Entertained our 3 children for a long car ride--excellent.......2007-04-18

We had a long car trip planned so I picked up an audio tape of this book for the journey. Our 3 kids--13, 11, and 9--loved it. And my husband and I wouldn't let them listen unless we were there too. The kids laughed and got a sense of what it was to be a journalist. My husband and I (both involved in our local elementary/middle schools) loved the sub plot on testing in the modern era. Excellent for boys and girls and quite a range of ages.

Adam Canfield of the Slash is the story of a very busy middle school student, Adam Canfield. Adam Canfield has a busy schedule every day of the week. One day he'll have baritone practice, swimming, and football. Another he'll have band, chorus, and soccer. Adam is always running around. To make things even worse he becomes the co-editor of the school newspaper, The Slash! Now, Adam is in charge of getting the newspaper ready for each month's issue. His brain is now full of things to do.

Adam lives in a small town. He is very busy going to practices before and after mandatory classes for state testing. Although he's a 4+ student he still has to study, which he hates doing. Adam tries to study in his spare time but he doesn't always have enough time. Adam's coeditor is a girl named Jennifer. She is the most organized person he has ever met. Jennifer is one of Adam's best friends.

Jennifer and Adam both find out lots of mysteries in collaboration. The first thing they do to change their little town is find out that all accessory structures (basketball hoops) are going to be torn down. When Adam finds this out he is outraged and puts an article in the newspaper about it. When all of the parents of the children read the story they are also outraged. People start petitions and protests about it. Eventually they decide to go to court. The court decision said that people could keep their hoops.

The next article was about an old lady who left money to the school and how the school was using it for "general improvements". Miss Minnie Bloch left thousands of dollars to the elementary/middle school. Miss Bloch only wanted a small plaque or scholarship in her name. For gratitude, Mrs. Harris, the school's principal, was thinking of other things. All she wanted to do was put an article in the paper about the gift. The rest of the money she would spend on a new bathroom with gold faucets and piping.

In the end, Jennifer and Adam are much closer. This is a great book for all ages. I loved it and think others will love it just as much. Try to read this book as soon as you can.

Hearty thumbs up from a teacher.......2006-03-26

I read this book in 24 hours. I usually don't have time to read novels, but I couldn't put this one down. The characters and situations were so familiar, I felt as though I were right there in the midst of it all. It's a hilarious, poignant story and a fire-tongued critique of the test-obsessed school system and much more. The characters have many subtleties, and the wisdom of the book goes far below the surface. I would recommend this for classroom reading!

Ten years later every navy was building 44-gun frigates and today it is viewed as the symbol of the Napoleonic-era cruiser. Concise but comprehensive history of a great ship type.......2003-08-30

"American Heavy Frigates, 1794-1826" by Mark Lardas is one of the innumerable Osprey paperbacks, packed with illustrations and aimed at presenting a study of one particular slice of military history. In this case, it is part of the New Vanguard series about "The design, development, operation and history in the machinery of warfare through the ages," and the weapons system presented in Lardas's book is epitomized by arguably the most famous American warship of all time: the USS Constitution, Old Ironsides. But "American Heavy Frigates" goes well beyond that single vessel or even the War of 1812. Instead, we are treated to concise although comprehensive survey history of the design and development of the ship type, including a discussion of foreign influences, from Joshua Humphreys' proposal in 1793 that "as our navy for a considerable time will be inferior in numbers we must consider what size ships will be an overmatch for those of an enemy ..." until the last American sailing heavy frigates (USS Santee and Sabine) were launched in 1855. Too often we forget that this ship type in the US Navy was not limited to the Constitution and her two sister ships (President and United States) but included over a dozen other vessels of similar design, the backbone of the American navy through the Mexican War and beyond. Lardas discusses the origin, operational history, and eventual fate of each heavy frigate. Most of the illustrations are black-and-white reproductions of contemporary paintings or engravings of the ships, although the color section includes an excellent detailed three-dimensional cutaway drawing of Old Ironsides. "American Heavy Frigates" is a slender volume (only 48 pages) but a worthy addition to any library of books about the Age of Fighting Sail.

OK but No Value-Added Material.......2003-08-27

The role of the three "heavy" 44 gun frigates - USS Constitution, United States and President - is crucial in early American naval history. Indeed, lacking a large battle fleet, the heavy frigate was the backbone of the US Navy until the onset of the Civil War. Mark Lardas, with degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering, is well qualified to outline the design, development and history of America's heavy frigates. Overall, the volume is adequate and gives a good perspective on the role of these sailing warships.

Lardas has sections on the design and development, operational history and the ships themselves. The American frigates in this period are classified as the three original Humphreys' frigates (built 1794-1800), the three war expansion frigates (built 1813-1815), the nine "gradual increase" frigates (built 1819-1861) and the three final frigates (1813-1842). The color plates depict the sail plan of the USS United States; the USS Constitution evading the British fleet; the gun deck on a Humphreys' frigate; a cutaway diagram of the USS Constitution; the mast arrangement of the USS Brandywine; the capture of the USS President; and flags and weapons.

American Heavy Frigates 1794-1826 will give readers a basic overview of most of the ships in this period, although some readers will wonder why this book excludes 36-gun frigates like the USS Constellation. Why not just cover all US frigates in the period 1798-1815, rather than covering a number of warships, such as the USS Hudson, that were historical non-entities. I was also disappointed that the author failed to provide any comparative data on the naval guns mounted on these frigates, since superior firepower was one of their main advantages he notes. Nor is there any information on tactics, training, cost of construction, materials used, maintenance (how often did they need their copper plates replaced?), etc. Thus, the author provides a bare-bones summary of the ships, without much else to add value. Quite frankly, much of the material here is merely summarized from other secondary sources, with little sign of fresh research.
