Book Description
In this book, David Davenport covers all aspects of the equity manager search from finding the right names through evaluating the performance of the equity manager after he or she has been hired. As Davenport notes at the outset, the choice of an investment manager for a corporate pension fund can have far-reaching implications for plan performance and is, therefore, one of the most important responsibilities of the pension manager. However, he notes, most pension plan sponsors feel compelled to retain an outside consultant to hire the fund's equity managers, feeling they do not possess the expertise necessary to conduct a thorough search. Arguing that pension managers would be better served by conducting the search themselves--not only will they save the fund thousands of dollars in fees but they will also have a much-improved vision of the investment management business--Davenport presents a clear and straightforward guide to the equity manager search from the plan sponsor's perspective. The book is organized chronologically by search stage and begins with thorough discussion of search criteria. In a section entitled "Getting Started," Davenport shows how to find the right names and how to sort through, analyze, and verify candidates' performance claims. Subsequent chapters address preparing the investment questionnaire, the screening process, visiting the investment manager, and testing for consistent results. Davenport then demonstrates techniques for culling the list, selecting the finalists, narrowing the choice to one candidate, and presenting the candidate to the pension committee. The final chapter discusses performance expectations and measurement, management review, performance factors, and other issues related to the evaluation of the equity manager's performance. Numerous tables and figures illustrate points made in the text. Several appendixes include additional helpful information including a Report of the FAF Committee for Performance Presentation Standards and a performance analysis spreadsheet. Corporate and public pension fund managers will find this book an invaluable aid in their attempts to field the best team of managers for the funds over which they preside.

Book Description
Vanity, Vitality, and Virility is a fascinating portrait gallery of chemicals involved in our everyday life, from Viagra and selenium to whispering asphalt, nappies, and chewing gum. While it will not advise you what to do if you want to improve your looks, your health, your peace of mind or your sex life, it explains the science behind many of the products that claim to be able to do just that. Chemistry is too often associated with poisonous gases and strange bubbling solutions, yet it is all around us, and inside us too. Renowned science communicator John Emsley lifts the lid on the secrets inside the products we use every day.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reading.......2006-08-31
This is the third book that I've read by John Emsley. The author keeps the story moving by supporting statements within the text rather than distracting footnotes. Anyone interested in his daily exposure to the world of chemistry will enjoy this book. The book is not technical, but it is an excellent source of references should one want to dig deeper into any of the title topics.
Some neat facts about consumer products, could have been more scientific.......2005-09-01
This book is divided into several sections, focussing on related series of compounds. The first three sections give the book its title - vanity (cosmetics, skin products), vitality (food-related topics), and virility (the biochemical functioning of the male reproductive system, as well as some information on Viagra). The rest of the chapters focus on how to kill germs, brain chemistry, and polymers of various uses.
The book goes into more detail than many other "popular chemistry" books that I've read. Unfortunately, it doesn't go into more technical detail - the author seems to want to avoid getting too technical, referring the reader instead to a glossary of technical terms. This is a good idea but poorly carried out. For example, he discusses oils, fats, and waxes, but no where does he define the difference between them. Mostly this does not detract from the enjoyment of the book, because chemists are likely to already know the answer and most lay people will not care for a technical explanation anyway.
The topics are interesting and varied. The commentary is mostly neutral: when chemicals are dangerous he points them out, but mostly he emphasises times when "chemicals" are unfairly maligned. For example, toxicity tests are usually performed with concentrations far in excess of what a person would encounter in everyday life. Statistically insignificant correlations are released to the media without qualification. If nothing else, this book will alert you to keep an eye out for the purpose behind research.
Unfortunately, the book just doesn't read as well as other "Chemistry for the Public" books. There are some weird lapses in the narrative where the author is apparently trying to make a joke, but that is just awkward or mildly offensive. The Joe Schwarcz books are more interesting and better written, if much less detailed.
Chemicals for Beauty, Health, and Procreation........2005-03-22
Written by a British chemist who also wrote A HISTORY OF POISON, THE SORDID TALE OF MURDER..., and NATURE'S BUILDING BLOCKS among others. This book was actually written by a lot of people; each chapter had varied and sundry consultants.
The cover shows a lovely new tube of lipstick, possibly Revlon or Max Factor. Lipsticks are used as allures; beware the ingredients. He tells everything you ever wanted to know about lipstick and maybe some you don't. He gets pretty technical.
VANITY: Anti-wrinkle patches don't work; they can damage your eyes and will not lessen the wrinkles. Lipsticks and sunscreens have been around in America since the 1920s, no doubt popularized by the movie stars of that era. He left out perfumes. Price, he says, is no guide to performance.
Tans cause long-range damage to the skin resulting in cancer by damaging DNA and the immune system' ultra-violet rays damage the eyes. UV-A are the aging rays; UV-B are the burning rays. Wear sunglasses to delay the start of cataracts.
VITALITY: our bodies need carbohydrates, fat, protein plus sodium, potassium calcium, and iron, zinc, magnesium, and especially vitamins and trace elements. Also fiber and water.
VIRILITY: Viagra for men, the least said the better. He goes into great detail. Read the book to learn what really happens.
He devotes a section to germs outside the body and in; one hint is to use vodka or gin as antiseptic. I learned that brandy is made out of grape pulp after the wine is distilled.
Find out the truth about alcohol, peroxide, cleansers and all the chemicals involved to get rid of germs.
A chemist, Linus Pauling, won the Nobel Prize in 1954 and again in 1962 (Peace Prize). He blasts the United States for their flagrant acts against him in 1960.
Wonderful Overview of Chemistry in Our Daily Lives.......2004-12-28
In Vanity, Vitality, Virility, Emsley describes the chemistry behind certain products that we depend on in our daily lives. These products range from lipstick to Viagra to Prozac. Each snapshot of a certain chemical offers a quick summary of how the product works, its benefits and its harms. Emsley is excellent at piecing together a coherent train of thought on certain chemicals and their history. The book reads well and is written for the popular audience as Emsley makes sure that the vocabulary and theory is brought down to a level in which general chemistry students can understand. However, he does not water it down so much as to discourage chemistry professionals from reading his book. He makes a point not to substitute certain chemical formula for its more common name, in the hope that his readers may not be intimidated by the language chemistry uses. To conclude his book, Emsley describes the current plight of scientific education and makes an attempt at diagnosing its problems. He also seeks out possible solutions and pleads for students to study chemistry. Overall, the book is highly interesting as it aids us in the understanding of chemical applications, which is often neglected in chemistry classes. I believe that the book clears up certain image problems with the chemistry profession in general and increases general interest in chemistry study.
Interesting and highly readable.......2004-08-28
Emsley is a chemist with writing abilities. He presents what could be dry, scientific material as interesting and fun to read. It's a quick read, yet full of information. I suspect he could have written a book of 500+ pages on the chemicals behind household (bleach), beauty (lipstick, wrinkle creams), health (Viagra, Prozac) and everyday items (chewing gum) we take for granted. I would have loved even more!

Book Description
Modern seismology is a relatively new science; most current ideas originated no earlier than the latter half of the nineteenth century. The focus of this book is on seismological concepts, how they originated and how they form our modern understanding of the science. A history of seismology falls naturally into four periods: a largely mythological period previous to the 1755 Lisbon earthquake; a period of direct observation from then to the development of seismometers in the late 19th century; a period during which study of seismic arrival times were used to outline the structure of the earth's interior extending the 1960s; the modern era in which all aspects of seismic waves are used in combination with trial models and computers to elucidate details of the earthquake process. This history attempts to show how modern ideas grew from simple beginnings. Ideas are rarely new, and their first presentations are often neglected until someone is able to present the evidence for their correctness convincingly. Much care has been used to give the earliest sources of ideas and to reference the basic papers on all aspects of earthquake seismology to help investigators find such references in tracing the roots of their own work.

Book Description
Michael Newman's novel Cocktails In Paris is a witty, engaging satire on the café life as lived by six twenty-something foreign students on Paris's left bank. The story takes place during a single afternoon at an outdoor café table. As the erudite but pompous, Oxford-educated Simon and the bright, earnest African-American David spend the afternoon drinking and engaging in a prolonged verbal joust, they are watched by the sweet German girl Katya, who barely says a word. After a while they are joined by the sophisticated Jewish-American Princess sisters Tricia and Julia, whose jaded, worldly comments provide a satiric counterpoint to the boys' semi-pointless argumentation. As the afternoon falls into evening Magnus, a Swedish friend, joins them for the drunken finale.
Customer Reviews:
Cocktails In Paris - warm summer breezes, French wine and cheeses.......2006-04-27
For travel-fiction lovers, it's Springtime in Paris! Time for the young at heart to venture out into the city boulevards for the eternal search for the all-elusive love of life. The book is set outside a famous Paris cafe, the Cafe de Flore, which Michael Newman describes in some detail midway through the book. As for the characters, Sy makes you want to scream, while his foil, David, and his self-conscious bumblingness over the waitress, is so lovable that you do hope he finds what he is after. All the girls are straight out of a Pride and Prejudice scene, including the 'waifish' Katya, who barely says a word (as the book jacket tells us up front) but is the most enigmatic of the personalities. Michael Newman's reproofed version of Cocktails In Paris is now without any overly-layed out misconceptions present in the first book published: now it is clear and precise and moving. And his addition at the end of the novel of the excerpt from his future book leaves little doubt that it, too, will be worthwhile to add to your travel-fiction collection when it comes out. Highly recommended!
The essence of everyday..........2006-04-16
Being a fan of a great glass or two of wine, I admit after finishing Michael's book I instantly set up an afternoon to share a bottle and enjoy abstract paths of conversation amongst my close friends--the true substance of life and memories. If you have ever lived or worked overseas the book transports you back to "those days", and you reminisce of times spent laughing and savoring every youthful, carefree moment. The book reminds you of a time when life was ahead of you, responsibilities clipped at your heels and you just stopped and enjoyed the moment. For those without overseas experience, Cocktails in Paris inspires you to delight in spontaneity and to appreciate the flavor of perspective each individual you meet brings to share. Not to mention make you want to amble along the streets of Paris!
Book Description
Strange Battles of the Civil War is an anecdotal look at engagements during the Civil War that have unique or unusual aspects. Arranged chronologically from the beginning of the conflict through its conclusion, these battles include victories against overwhelming odds, lost or miscredited orders that affected the outcomes of battles, action without orders that led to stunning results, battles with wholly unexpected political results, the "acoustic shadow" phenomenon that prevented commanders in the field from responding to nearby actions, unusual participants, unique or novel animals or equipment in battle, extremely low-and unbelievably high-casualties, and peculiar objectives.
Relatively little attention is given to logistics. Instead, the focus is on the human-interest factors in these accounts . Among the unusual stories are:
December 20, 1861: Hungry horses trigger a clash at Dranesville, Virginia, among hay- hunting parties who fought over fodder for their animals, resulting in 250 casualties.
May 15, 1862: At Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, the Confederate capital at Richmond is saved because Federal naval guns could not be elevated sufficiently to fire on the Southerners' position on the bluff.
June 6, 1862: Two fragile, unarmed wooden Rebel vessels engage eight Yankee ironclads near Memphis-and capture three of them.
September 30, 1862: At a Confederate victory at Newtonia, Missouri, most of the soldiers on both sides are Native Americans.
September 8, 1863: Southerners at Sabine Pass, Texas, are outnumbered by approximately 225 to 1, but manage to thwart the Federal advance.
October 29, 1863: Union mules stampede Confederate troops at Wauhatchie, Tennessee, and the Federal quartermaster recommends they be brevated to the rank of "horse."
Customer Reviews:
Embarrassingly Awful.......2007-08-01
The first essay I read in Garrison's book was on the Battle of Franklin, and I decided not to waste my time on the others.
In the very first sentence of the Franklin essay Garrison makes the first of numerous factual errors when he states that the Confederate commander John Bell Hood was a major general. Four months before the Battle of Franklin Hood was promoted from the rank of lieutenant general to the temporary rank of full general. Hood had not been a major general since Chickamauga, a full year earlier.
On the very first page of the essay Garrison states that after the Battle of Franklin Hood proceeded to Nashville with an army of only 19,000 men. In fact the troop strength of Hood's army was 31,500 when he marched on Nashville.
Still on the first page Garrison parrots the myth that Hood used laudanum...an outrageous assertion that has been universally discredited by virtually every Civil War scholar.
The factual errors in Garrison's short essay on Franklin are simply too numerous to detail here.
His outrageously ignorant analyses and commentary add to the pain in reading this headache-inducing essay.
A better title for this book would be Strange Books of the Civil War, or A Strange Decision by a Civil War Book Publisher.
Not really a great read.......2005-03-14
I found this work to be a little disappointing. Each story seemed to develope slowly and was just not exiciting or interesting. Maybe to someone just beginning to read about this war, it might hold some interest, but not in my case.

Book Description
"Remarkably and immensely readable...A just yet compassionate study of two complex, muddled, fissured human beings caught in the most difficult of crafts--kingship...It should not be missed by anyone interested in the Stuarts or in the personalities of Charles I and Charles II: indeed, any reader will be greatly stimulated by it."--J.H. Plumb, New York Review of Books. Two kings, father and son...and yet, their personalities could hardly have differed more. Through sources as varied as masks, statues, poems, medals, and contemporary written records, a picture of these Stuart monarchs, their characters and their politics, emerges.
Customer Reviews:
Not Surprisingly, This Book Is About Image and Personality!.......2000-08-24
While I agree with the previous reviewer that this book is not an historical chronicle of the reigns of Charles I and Charles II, it does not purport to be. What it does provide is superb insight into the personalities of these two fascinating monarchs, their public images and private personae. One can get excellent chronicles of the reign elsewhere. Here, one encounters vivid exposition and analysis of the thoughts, motives and manners of the kings, and how these were affected by the conscious cultivation of image. Ollard is, as always, elegant and eloquent.
Image is everything.......2000-05-25
Skip this book if you're looking for details into the reigns of these monarchs or specific instances of foreign policy, etc. This book mostly discusses the image of the kings, as the title suggests. There is little mention of Charles I's attempt to rule without his Parliment, but instead concentrates on his exquisit art collections, his vanity and his self-image. There is more written about Charles II and how his exile shaped his personality and made him so markedly different from his father. The book itself is small and is a fast read. It is a great character sketch on these two Kings.
