Not Enough Hands On!.......2003-06-11

This book was more touchy-feely to me than practical. I have taught extensively in the past, and do not need a book that gives me fundamental pedagogical skills -- I already possess them.

I was looking for a book that would assist me in converting a course from face-to-face to online. This book has an extensive section on the technologies required to teach online, which will be helpful to those who have never used computer before; to me, it was a waste of space.

There is no discussion of merits of different instructional design methodologies, and not a lot of concrete examples of how to teach online. This is a very light book, and I wouldn't use it anywhere except possibly to familiarize upper management with the logistics of online teaching.

For those teachers/professors/instructors/educators who are going to be on the front lines of online education, you can give this book a pass.

Talks about Teaching First!.......2001-06-18

Finally, a book about online teaching that actually talks about TEACHING! It sets the context in education pedagogy and then gives the practical suggestions. Now teachers will have something to work from, other than just the mechanics of the technology. This will launch them on a successful TEACHING experience and better student retention.

A web site comes with the book, but not all the references in the book are on the web site and some of the links on the site are broken.

Still for those of you thinking of teaching online, the book is written in a language that you can understand - one of teaching and learning.

Finally a practical, useful book covering both the background materials and basic information needed to select a delivery system, develop a course, and conduct a class at a college level. Moore, Winograd and Lange combine to present materials that are not biased toward one publisher or delivery system. They share details on many of the major players in the field, and permit the reader to apply the the lessons learned to developing their own course to be delivered via F2F or distance education.

Emphasis is given to helping the faculty member personalize the online learning experience for the student. Various teaching styles are discussed and hints for applying web enhanced experiences are given.

Appropriate attention is given to the task of translating content of the course to an online mode. Hints and tips are included for creating syllabus, assingments, discussion questions and other tools that will increase interactivity. Once the course is "designed", they step the reader through many of the details and mechancis of actually converting the materials to online format.

Time is taken to help the reader realize that once the course is created, the real work is ready to begin. Implementation includes conducting the class utilizing the designed materials and making any modfications and/or changes that are necessary as the semester progresses. Tips include maintaining a schedule throughout the week, and providing rich, rapid feeback to the students. Evaluation techniques are discussed with the idea of being able to improve the course materials, format and schedule in the future.

This book provides a number of checklists and tables that will be valuable tools for the reader. The companion website is a valuable list of resources and hyperlinks that provide hours and hours of fun.

Like most discussions within the tradition of rights-talk, this study is motivated by the desire to promote the idea that rights are moral assets that people should acquire in the course of their membership within social and political frameworks. However, while most participants in rights-talk concentrate on the safety and protection constraints required for a successful exercising of rights, the present study inquires into the circumstances under which people's rights lose their validity. A brief introduction to modern chemistry.......2007-01-10

My training is in Physics, and I have not had a chance to read-up on Chemistry in a long while. I decided to read this book in order to get a better bird's eye view of what the modern Chemistry is up to these days. As such, this book was a great introduction, and brought me up to speed with some of the more recent developments. Thanks to this book and some other info I got, I was able to piece things together and figure out what some of the more advanced research in the conventional explosives is all about.

A MUST READ for EVERY manager, employer, CEO, anyone who is a leader of just one or thousands of employees! It will literally change the way a leader looks at their company and what it takes to be successful by demonstrating how the employees MUST come first as the company's NUMBER ONE asset! It will cause a total shift in the leader's thinking, from "customer oriented" to "employee oriented" way of doing business. The author emphasizes as the company takes care of the employee, they, in turn will take care of the customer. Karl shows you how to do it with excellent concepts and ideas that work! Reading this book will cause the reader to lose sleep, to be haunted if they choose to ignore Karl's leading! Perhaps losing valuable employees in the process, never realizing why. Karl shares how companies spend thousands of dollars on learning how to catch and keep customers, when the real key, like Karl demonstrates, is how to catch and keep EMPLOYEES, who catch and keep customers. The business then thrives! Karl is an amazing author.

Karl Arlbrecht discusses customer service strategies and programs and the failed application of manufacturing ideas to service organisations. I was amazed how accurate his book was at describing many of the failures that my past two employers made. It was as if he had worked for us! An excellent reference book for management in service based businesses.

Opium is more than just a drug extracted from poppies. Over the past two centuries it has been a palliative medicine, an addictive substance, a powerful mechanism for concentrating and transferring wealth and power between nations, and the anchor for a now vanished sociocultural world in and around China. Opium Regimes integrates the pioneering research of sixteen scholars to show that the opium trade was not purely a British operation but involved Chinese merchants, Chinese state agents, and Japanese imperialists as well. The book presents a coherent historical arc that moves from British imperialism in the nineteenth century, to Chinese capital formation and state making at the turn of the century, to Japanese imperialism through the 1930s and 1940s, and finally to the apparent resolution of China's opium problem in the early 1950s.
Together these essays show that the complex interweaving of commodity trading, addiction, and state intervention in opium's history refigured the historical face of East Asia more profoundly than any other commodity.
