This book looks critically at some of the underlying assumptions which shape our current understanding of the role and purpose of law and society. It focuses on adjudication as a social practice and as a set of governmental techniques. From this vantage point, it explores how the relationship between law, government and society has changed in the course of history in significant ways. At the centre of the argument is the elaboration of the notion of `adjudicative government'. From this perspective it is argued that the relationship between law and society must be conceived in a different way in the era of economics, sociology and statistics. The impact of these disciplines both constitutes `modernity' and unfolds a different role for law. The author argues that the traditional vision of the role of law, rooted in a complex set of hierarchical assumptions, is no longer adequate.

Hilarious Cultural Commentary.......2003-11-05

J. Marshall Craig has chosen a unique vehicle, that of email correspondence, to carry on in the tradition of "The Canadian Conspiracy" and almost everything ever done by Rick Mercer. Having been born in Canada and now living in the US, he is uniquely qualified to observe for us the foibles and quirks of both cultures, all neatly wrapped up in a package conspiracy theorists will delight in.

Deep belly laughs ensue. Puns are served with the care and preparation of a gourmet dish. Satire is delivered with gentle understatement. One of the funniest looks at our culture I've read.

A hilarious little read! I think i woke most my fellow flyers on a recent flight back, ironically, from Boston. I couldn't put it down. I don't know what I enjoyed more, a Canadian's view of an American, or an American's interpretation of a Canadian.

J. Marshall Craig's charming book, Eh Mail, is a fast, funny and vividly voyeristic read consisting entirely of e-mail correspondence between an American intelligence agent stationed in Canada, his wife and sister in his hometown of Boston and his CIA supervisor in Washington, DC.
Predictably, the laugh riot correspondence chronicles, with both astonishment, contempt and a nano-drop of grudging admiration, the Canadian way of life: Ottawa winters (long and cold), health care (universal and free), Canadian cuisine (including such French Canadian delicacies as poutine and tortier), strong beer(Moosehead), government funding of the arts (vigorous) and the lack of non-stop flights to Edmonton, Alberta ("a radically right-wing Canadian version of Texas"), where local newspaper columnists "loudly and defensively proclaim" their satisfaction with living there.
Any Canadian living in US will laugh out loud at agent Avery Beckett's voyage of discovery north of the 49th parallel. (No, Toronto is not the capital of Canada. Yes, Raymond Burr, Alex Trebeck, Jim Carrey, Peter Jennings and Michael J. Fox were all born in Canada.) And everyone will be tickled by the clever humor and ubiquitous references to the many Canucks in Hollywood.

Canadians have been the brunt of allot of jokes. Second City comics made a living from sketches that raked the absurd nature of the evolved colloquial jargon, now Craig takes things on to the 21st century. Funny and witty this book will get you giggling. What a relief in these troubled times, eh.

The Battle of Crecy was the first major land battle of the Hundred Years War. It pitted the French army, then considered the best in Europe, and their miscellaneous allies against the English under King Edward III and the ‘Black Prince’, who as yet had no great military reputation; this was the battle where he ‘won his spurs’. The Genoese crossbowmen were outshot by the English longbows and the pattern was set for the rest of the day: the French cavalry were committed piecemeal in fruitless charges against strong English positions, losing perhaps 10,000 men in the course of the fighting. After almost a millennium in which cavalry had dominated the field of battle, the infantryman, and particularly the longbowman, now ruled supreme.

Bad editing and shorthand style.......2000-09-02

At first I would to say that I have read all titles of this series from antiquity to the Renaissance and my favorite author is D. Nicholle. So, as I received my copy and saw that the artwork is from Graham Turner (my favorite artist; the cover looks different in reality than that depicted above) joyful reading seemed to be assured. But this book is, regarding formal aspects, the weakest I have read by Nicholle, due mainly to aspects which perhaps the author could not control. 1. On the battlefield maps troop units are constantly labelled wrongly (they are often mixed up, e.g. the black prince wing is labelled as the wing of the Earl of Northampton and vice versa), and, not so important, the arrow showing North is facing the wrong direction by 90°. This problem seems to me due to making the maps in the last possible moment before printing (they, too, look different than the cover illustration shown above). 2. eight pages of mostly superfluous wargaming tips deal at length with figure sizes and army scales which everyone could extract from the text themself. Plus, the author of these tips states that the French army is three times the size of the English army which is totally contrary to the book author Nicholle who writes that they are of comparable size. 3. The political reasoning and actual motivation of the campaign are dealt with in three pages which throws just a spot of light on many topics, like the battle of Sluys and the war in Gascony (I needed to the end of the book to find out that the Duke of Normandy was the French king's brother). So, four more pages wouldn't have hurt. 4. I am interested in the evolution of armor and, as many know, this is an important time for it, but you have to search mostly beyond the pictures for information regarding this topic. One or two more words on this in the text wouldn't have hurt anybody. But, to say something positive, the artwork by G. Turner is really great and if the book is revised soon the new points of view on this battle and good description of raising an army in feudal England and France could be more appreciated.

The Moche people who inhabited the north coast of Peru between approximately 100 and 800 AD were perhaps the first ancient Andean society to attain state-level social complexity. Although they had no written language, the Moche created the most elaborate system of iconographic representation of any ancient Peruvian culture. Amazingly realistic figures of humans, animals, and beings with supernatural attributes adorn Moche pottery, metal and wooden objects, textiles, and murals. These actors, which may have represented both living individuals and mythological beings, appear in scenes depicting ritual warfare, human sacrifice, the partaking of human blood, funerary rites, and explicit sexual activities.

In this pathfinding book, Steve Bourget raises the analysis of Moche iconography to a new level through an in-depth study of visual representations of rituals involving sex, death, and sacrifice. He begins by drawing connections between the scenes and individuals depicted on Moche pottery and other objects and the archaeological remains of human sacrifice and burial rituals. He then builds a convincing case for Moche iconography recording both actual ritual activities and Moche religious beliefs regarding the worlds of the living, the dead, and the afterlife. Offering a pioneering interpretation of the Moche worldview, Bourget argues that the use of symbolic dualities linking life and death, humans and beings with supernatural attributes, and fertility and social reproduction allowed the Moche to create a complex system of reciprocity between the world of the living and the afterworld. He concludes with an innovative model of how Moche cosmological beliefs played out in the realms of rulership and political authority.
