Do you like nice little stories?.......2001-08-14
The book does not deliver on what it promises. The structure is ok, and the goal of presenting different problems with solutions from different industries is good. But then, the book dives into telling little stories about unnamed CEOs, and how they reacted to their respective e-challenges. This setting tries to make the challenges more personal, and it even includes "The CEO's daughter's birthday".
Either you like this style, and then you will like the book, or it will set your teeth on edge.
Packed With Knowledge.......2001-07-04
Wade through the technical jargon and dive directly into this deep pool of operational intelligence on the complexities of modern supply-chain management. Fred A. Kuglin and Barbara A. Rosenbaum provide step-by-step guidelines on how to put e-based solutions into effect throughout your supply chain to achieve cost effectiveness (that is, save money). Using the CEO's perspective, they describe a series of supply-chain approaches designed to address issues like capital requirements and production costs that drive company valuations. The book, which is forthrightly technical, is targeted to the CEO or high-level executive in charge of operations. We [...] highly recommend this book to this select audience, and commend the authors on their useful mix of charts, illustrations and dramatizations to illustrate supply-chain problems and solutions.
Book Description
Is scientific information misused by this country’s court system and lawmakers? Today more than ever before, lawyers, politicians, and government administrators are forced to wrestle with scientific research and to employ scientific thinking. The results are often less than enlightened.
In Legal Alchemy, David Faigman explores the ways the American legal system incorporates scientific knowledge into its decision making. Praised by both legal and scientific communities when it first appeared in hardcover, Legal Alchemy shows how science has been used and misused in a variety of settings, including
• The Courtroom—from the O. J. Simpson trial to the Dow Corning silicone breast implant lawsuit to landmark cases such as Roe v. Wade.
• The Legislature—where Congress uses scientific information to help enact legislation about clean air, cloning, and government science projects like the space station and the superconducting super collider.
• Government Agencies—who use science to determine policy on a variety of topics, from regulating sport utility vehicles to reintroducing gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park.
As Faigman describes these and other important cases, he provides disturbing evidence that many judges, juries, and members of Congress simply don’t understand the science behind their decisions. Finally, he offers suggestions on how the science and legal professions can overcome their miscommunication and work together more effectively.
Customer Reviews:
Faigman's position rests on novelty alone..........2003-03-15
What's the real issue here? Why is simple truth so hard to ascertain? What are the genuine relations between law, science, and religion? Considering the three in terms of Western human history, we know that all three are concerned with establishing truth in any manner of matters, but are products of their own society in time. Religion, the most basic element of human organization and inquiry, is founded on the principle of basic organization of groups. If we appeal to Durkheim (mysteriously missing from Faigman's discussions on the manner of religion), we learn that religion's truth is a simple truth, emanating from the very establishment of institutional leadership. One takes what one can get, often with utmost satisfaction. The Greeks, of course, among there numerous contributions to classical thought, established the fact that the human mind, and thus human motives and actions, are capable of deceit and being deceived. Hence, an advocacy-oriented system of law must be put in place, to act as a crucible for the determination of truth(theoretically). This is the epistemological gap Faigman so cleverly inserts himself within, establishing for us once again that humans are capable of deceit and being deceived, even within the inquiry-as-advocacy model.
Science picks up where religion and law leave off: rather than relying solely on human interpretations of moral and immoral, just and unjust, there exists as well the appeal to true and not true, grounded in the skeptical inquiry and examination of the ontological and phenomenonological "real world", by use of the scientific method. Surprise surprise, Faigman's stunning contribution is to assert once again: the human mind is capable of deceit and being deceived. Sometimes wolves will kill, sometimes they won't, even if they are wearing sheep's clothing. Oh dear, how shall we cope? It is at this point that Faigman enters a game in which he believes himself to be the sole player: the sociology of the scientific fact. And by not acknowledging that this is the domain upon which he now treads, he betrays his own ignorance: one must become a "sophisticated consumer[s] of science"? Balance the heads of the hydra with a system of checks and balances? We have only to look at how our current government's system of checks and balances is working to see the outcome of this prescription: human beings will die as a result of archaic precedents of inquiry, of matters religious, legal, and scientific, and the tightropes spanning between them.
The reader is much better off buying Sheila Jasanoff's "Science at the Bar" for a more rewarding discussion.
Painless introduction to critical thinking.......2000-12-15
Faigman's text is an entertaining and fast-paced introduction to critical thinking. He covers interpreting texts (constitution), supporting arguments, recognizing ambiguity, and distinguishing fact from assumption. He squeezes the lessons of Kafka's "The Trial", and a brief history of science between lively moments in judicial decision-making.
Excellent Discussion of Science and Law for the Layperson.......2000-09-20
Legal Alchemy is a nicely written and accurate description of the difficulties lawmakers face when judging science. In my twenty years experience writing and teaching about the use of science, particularly statistics, in law, I have never read such an engaging, thorough discussion of how the lawmakers turn scientific dross into gold and scientific gold into legal dross. This book is perfect for the layperson interested in the use of science in law. It contains innumerable examples of how scientific developments are treated in law and policy and discussion of all of the most important legal cases dealing with scientific evidence. Perhaps best of all, it contains Faigman's sound and well-reasoned judgments of various questions of scientific and legal policy.
Legal Alchemy presents science and law at the perfect level for the intelligent lay person. I include judges, legislators, and lawyers in that group because, while knowledgeable about law, few know anything about science. To those lawmakers seeking a more detailed description of the science relevant to specific legal issues, I highly recommend another of Faigman's works, a multi-volume treatise titled MODERN SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE.
As to the critical comments from a reviewer on May 4, 2000, I cannot imagine what was motivating that person. I find Faigman's understanding of science and statistics to be more than adequate to the task. Most of Faigman's discussion of statistics appears in Chapter III. He does not explain statistics the way one statistician would to another statistician, and the lay reader will be thankful. He does explain the methodology correctly and thoroughly. I see no grounds for complaint. One who doubts Faigman's understanding of science should consult MODERN SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE, mentioned in the previous paragraph.
Superficial and sloppy scholarship.......2000-05-05
This book promises much and delivers little. It is poorly edited (PatRobertson becomes Pat Robinson, for example) and the lawyer author'sunderstanding of science is wretchedly superficial and often plain wrong (he doesn't understand statistics, for example). This is especially amusing, as one of his points is the suspect understanding of science by most lawyers (I guess he would know). Faigman's view of science is of the 9th grade highschool variety. There are many more sophisticated views available. This is a wasted opportunity. Don't waste your money along with it.
A lively look at what happens when law and science collide.......1999-10-13
This book is what might result if you crossed a book by Stephen Jay Gould with a book like A Civil Action. Like Gould and Harr, this book takes an interesting topic that most of us would not otherwise know about, and provides a vivid and accessible picture of what is happening. To illustrate his theme that the law often is ill-equipped to assimilate scientific findings, Faigman uses topics like gray wolves, the space station and our beloved SUV's. For what at first might sound like a "heavy" topic, the book flows right along, nicely spiced with the author's wry observations. I'd recommend this book to anyone whatever their background -- lawyer, scientist or someone who simply is interested in hot social topics.

Book Description
The primary objective of this volume, the first in a new series entitled Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, is to survey some effective approaches to understanding, describing and predicting ways in which solutes and solvents interact and the effects they have upon each other. The treatment of solute/solvent interactions that is presented emphasizes a synergism between theory and experiment. Data obtained experimentally are used as a basis for developing quantitative theoretical models that permit the correlation and interpretation of the data, and also provide a predictive capability. The latter being of course a key motivation for these efforts. Linear solvation energy relationships have been quite successful in this respect and accordingly receive considerable attention. Other effective approaches, including computational ones, are also being pursued, and are discussed in several chapters. This is an area that is continually evolving, and it is hoped that the present volume will convey a sense of its dynamic nature.
Book Description
This is the first book in English reviewing and updating the geology of the whole Apennines, one of the recent most uplifted mountains in the world. The Apennines are the place from which Steno (1669) first stated the principles of geology. The Apennines also represent amongst others, the finding/testing sites of processes and products like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, olistostromes and mélanges (argille scagliose), salinity crisis, geothermal fluids, thrust-top basins, and turbidites (first represented in a famous Leonardo's painting). As such, the Apennines are a testing and learning ground readily accessible and rich of any type of field data. A growing literature is available most of which is not published in widely available journals.
The objective of the book is to provide a synthesis of current data and ideas on the Apennines, for the most part simply written and suitable for an international audience. However, sufficient details and in-depth analyses of the various complex settings have been presented to make this material useful to professional scholars and to students of senior university courses.

Book Description
The study of electrons and holes confined to two, one and even zero dimensions has uncovered a rich variety of new physics and applications. This book describes the interaction between these confined carriers and the optic and acoustic phonons within and around the confined regions. Phonons provide the principal channel of energy transfer between the carriers and their surroundings and also the main restriction to their room temperature mobility. But they have many other roles; they provide, for example, an essential feature of the operation of the quantum cascade laser. Since their momenta at relevant energies are well matched to those of electrons, they can also be used to probe electronic properties such as the confinement width of 2D electron gases and the dispersion curve of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The book describes both the physics of the electron-phonon interaction in the different confined systems and the experimental and theoretical techniques that have been used in its investigation. The experimental methods include optical and transport techniques as well as techniques in which phonons are used as the experimental probe. The aim of the book is to provide an up to date review of the physics and its significance in device performance. It is also written to be explanatory and accessible to graduate students and others new to the field.

A moving, intense story of war, trauma and recovery.......2004-05-23
When I first came across "Farewell Darkness," I was looking for an account that would give me a solid insight into the effects of combat trauma. As a novelist, I needed to get more deeply inside the head of one of my characters, and though my subject's time was different, war is still war, only the technology changes. Not only did I find what I was looking for in this book, but I also found a tremendously moving, intense story of war, trauma and recovery that should be read by anyone who lived in the Vietnam era, veteran and civilian. Ron Zaczek writes with eloquence, crisp detail and a straightforward honesty rarely found in personal accounts of serving In Country. With profound insight and courage, he sorts through the fear, guilt and anger that he suffered. And even without having been in war personally, I have learned quite a bit about how fear, guilt and anger are irrevocably interconnected and how we face similar degrees of them in everyday life. Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2001-08-21
As the wife of a Khe Sanh Viet Nam veteran, I have watched my husband of 25 years deal with his own personal war - struggling through his memories of Viet Nam. In "Farewell Darkness", Ron Zaczek helped me to understand more clearly the phases my husband has gone through and the emotional hell he lives with every day. This book is a must-read for anyone whose loved one suffers from PTSD as a result of Viet Nam.
Farewell Darkness.......2000-09-09
Of the numerous books written on the War in Vietnam, I believe this is the defining work of the life and times of a Marine Helicopter Crew Chief and his battles fought during and after the war.
It is a story of undying friendship, terror, laughter and the sadness of loss. But most of all it is a story about the heart of a man and his sense of duty to friends and family. It is a journey none should wish to take, but it raises the spirit to follow Ron and his battle to overcome his personal war.
It is the essence of "Semper Fidelis" (always faithful). It is the story of one VMO-3 Marine Crew Chief, a title not given nor easily earned, and the men with whom he served.
Outstanding, well written and a clarity next to none.
Gift to my son.......2000-05-13
Great book. I have given it to my son in the hope that he may better understand his father.
Compelling, provocative, and educational. A must read!.......1998-09-24
The author skillfully relates his combat experiences, the delayed onset of P.T.S.D., its effect on his family, his treatment, and eventual conquest of his condition. The suspense slowly builds until the ultimate cause of his trauma, "the darkness" is revealed to the reader. Schedule your reading of "Farewell Darkness" when you have a lot of spare time. You may not be able to put this one down.

Book Description
On February 13, 1982, the Guatemalan army stormed into the remote northern Guatemala village of Santa María Tzejá. The villagers had already fled in terror, but over the next six days seventeen of them, mostly women and children, were caught and massacred, animals were slaughtered, and the entire village was burned to the ground.
Twelve years later, utilizing terms of refugee agreements reached in 1982, villagers from Santa María who had fled to Mexico returned to their homes and lands to re-create their community with those who had stayed in Guatemala. Return of Guatemala's Refugees tells the story of that process. In this moving and provocative book, Clark Taylor describes the experiences of the survivors-both those who stayed behind in conditions of savage repression and those who fled to Mexico where they learned to organize and defend their rights. Their struggle to rebuild is set in the wider drama of efforts by grassroots groups to pressure the government, economic elites, and army to fulfill peace accords signed in December of 1996.
Focusing on the village of Santa María Tzejá, Taylor defines the challenges that faced returning refugees and their community. How did the opposing subcultures of fear (generated among those who stayed in Guatemala) and of education and human rights (experienced by those who took refuge in Mexico) coexist? Would the flood of international money sent to settle the refugees and fulfill the peace accords serve to promote participatory development or new forms of social control? How did survivors expand the space for democracy firmly grounded in human rights? How did they get beyond the grief and trauma that remained from the terror of the early eighties? Finally, the ultimate challenge, how did they work within conditions of extreme poverty to create a grassroots democracy in a militarized society?
Customer Reviews:
Story of struggle by Guatemala's indigenous people.......2001-07-22
The so called peace accords were signed in 1998. In theory, the accords ended a war of almost 40 years. This book focuses on the "scorched earth" campaign waged by the Guatemala army, which resulted in the displacement of over 2 million indigenous Mayans--many of whom were forced from the country and lived as refugees in Mexico for over a decade, while others made accomodations with the Army, or joined the guerrillas in resistance.
This book documents the after-effects of that decade-long displacement, as these three groups seek to recreate their pre-war community, in a country still subject to periodic out breaks of violence, while struggling with extreme poverty.
Clark provides an excellent analysis of both the effects of the scorched earth campaign, and the ongoing problems that campaign is causing at the village level. Anyone who is interested in the effects of war on ordinary people should read this book.
As an aside, it is interesting how much the Guatemala Army learned from the U.S. experience in Vietnam. The entire "scorched earth" campaign is clearly based on the concept of "free fire zones" first practiced by the US in the Mekong Delta, and recently made famous by the confessions of Senator Kerry.
Highly recommended to combat the idea that war can be faught without long term damage to a country.
Interesting, detailed, in-depth account of war-torn Guat........1999-10-10
Very accessible account of the history of Guatemala's civil war and refugee population. This book tells of the horrors of the war and of the work involved in "reweaving" Guatemala's torn society. Taylor focuses on one particular village as a lens into the horrid situation lived by hundreds of thousands of Guatemalans during 36 years of armed conflict. Taylor compares the experiences of people who fled the country during the war to those who stayed behind and faced brutal army repression. The 2 groups eventually reunite back in their original village and Taylor observes their interactions after 12 years of separation. He finds differences in viewpoint and attitude between the 2 groups as they come together to form a community again. He includes a chapter on development and material aid with different critical perspectives which is good for anyone considering involvement in an "aid" project. He also looks at psychological afteraffects of the war and considers the role of the army in peacetime.
