      Book Description

If a firm has a historical profit margin of 10%, which would be better; (1) a 50% increase in sales, or (2) a 10% curtailment in the costs associated with purchased products and services? Would you believe either results in the same effect to the bottom line. It's true. Next question. Which is easier to attain?

That's an easy one to answer after you've mastered the methods contained in this book. At a time when costs related to purchasing account for over 50% of a product's total cost, shouldn't the attention paid to your company's procurement function be highly focused? We thought you'd say that.

Key Concepts: Supplier Cooperation. Provides the methodology for attaining long-term relationships with suppliers in which they are made to be partners, not victims. Total Cost Approach. Allows you to account for hidden costs, as well as those readily apparent. Total Quality Control. Shows purchasers how to supply the right material, at the right time, in the right place and in the right quantity. Theory Of One. Outlines the pull system of manufacturing versus its counterpart, push production.

5 out of 5 stars Vital reading for a astronomy enthusiast.......2007-08-15

I have found this book to be a veritable wealth of information with the uncommon aspect of actually giving critical, unbiased assessments of the wide and varied array of astronomical hardware available.

While you might not agree with all his observations, the assessments appear to be based on actual hands-on experience, and I find it refreshing to see reviews that don't uniformly praise every single item under scrutiny!

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to future updates.

5 out of 5 stars Good Buying Guide.......2007-07-08

I now own the last 3 editions of this. An excellent and extensive introductionj to astronomical equipment and accessories definitely worthwhile for the new astronomer. Even worthwhile for many more experienced astronomers. Includes a section featuring many DIY accessories.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-06-25

There are a number of books out there that cover available equipment for Amateur Astronomy. However, I haven't found any that cover this area as in depth as this book. The Author, Phil Harrington has certainly done his research, and brings this information to the reader in an easily understood way. I first bought this book in 2006 and found some of the information to be a little dated at that time. When I saw that there was going to be an updated version coming out, I knew I would be purchasing it. I purchased the updated version and it wasn't at all lacking. At the time of it's release (4/2007) it is current with regards to available equipment for the Amateur Astronomer. This book is easy to read and understand. When I am looking to purchase a new piece of equipment, Starware is the first book I grab for the information I need.

There's a ton of useful information here. At a price of less than almost astro accessory, it's highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Way too technical -- No pictures -- Not for the novice.......2006-12-03

This book is not for the novice interested in learning about the basics of telescope buying.

It is a very hard read as it is not organized nicely, has pages and pages of technical jargon, tons of unnecessary repetition...

They describe certain telescope features and don't explain why one feature might be better over another. They just mention the features.

The book contains a lot of reviews on outdated equipment and nothing on the latest telescopes.

It did not provide a simple outline of the various features one should look for in a telescope -- perhaps aperture, focal length, mm diameter, etc. -- this is what I was looking for.

I found more informative concise information on Yahoo! Answers for free.

I decided to purchase another book that was meant for the newbie and explains in simple terms what one should look for and has a lot of great photos and diagrams. It does not contain technical terms adfinitum that would only help a professional astronomer.

The better book is entitled "A Simple Guide to Telescopes, Spotting Scopes, and Binoculars" and you can purchase on Amazon for $10. This book is helpful for not only telescope selecting for the novice, but also for set up, etc for after you get the telescope.

      Emphasis on the word simple!

Thank goodness I decided to check it out at my local Borders, as I was about to buy it sight unseen on Amazon due to the great reviews above. It would have been a waste of money!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for beginners or any Astronomy library.......2001-12-12

Phil Harrington's book is the perfect primer for those interested in astronomy or contemplating a telescope purchase. It is very easy to follow and fun to read as he de-mistifies many of the terms those who are new to astronomy might not be familiar with. The book even includes a test you can take to determine the best type of telescope to purchase, taking your budget and your viewing location into consideration. I own the 1st and 2nd editions and have loaned them both to many who have contemplated a scope purchase. This book is probably the best money I ever spent on the hobby! Thanks Phil!

5 out of 5 stars A must if you own or want to buy a telescope........2000-12-21

Philip S. Harrington's Star Ware is one of the best guides to choose, buy and use telescopes and accesories for observing the nightsky. With many charts, illustrations, tables and black and white photographs, this book is a real help in order to setup and test your astronomical equipment. In ten well written chapters, the book deals with topics such as aperture, focal lenght, focal ratio, magnification and resolving power. It also explains the different types of telescopes (reflectors, refractors, etc) comparing different brands of telescopes and eyepieces, giving useful tips on observing and astrophotography. Useful appendices, updated in this second edition, will give the reader information about telescope dealers, distributors and manufacturers, in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. Definitively, this is one of the best books of its kind and a must for amateur astronomers who own or want to buy a telescope.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely great book.......2000-11-05

This is the only book I've ever read. I can say with ease and honesty that it is flawless. I knew next to nothing about observing with a telescope, let alone how to choose the right one for myself. The Author always starts a topic at the absolute beginning and then proceeds slowly, but steadily, untill everything is covered. It wouldn't be fair to call this an easy-to-read book, but scientific books does not get much easier to read than this. The conclusion must be, that if you are looking for a book about Amateur astronomy or simply how to choose the right telescope or equipment, than stop looking! Don't waste the time or your money on other books! This is simply all there is to say about astronomy.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-06-06

This is an amzing resource for all amateur astronomers. While it can get a bit overly wordy, this book helps you to understand just about any scope you can but. It also has good descriptions of ronchigram and star tests for amateur telescope makers. Highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars essential astro gear guide.......2000-05-18

There are a few books no amateur astronomer should be without. One is Peterson's Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, which packs more useful information into a smaller package than any other book I know of. A second is The Backyard Astronomer's Guide by Dickinson & Dyer, which covers the basics of the hobby in a more expansive, descriptive format.

A third member of this short list has recently been republished in a new edition: Star Ware, Second Edition (The Amateur Astronomer's Ultimate Guide to Choosing, Buying, and Using Telescopes and Accessories) by Philip S. Harrington, 1998 John Wiley & Sons. Star Ware is aimed mostly at beginners, teaching in a lively and informal style the basics of how telescopes work and how to use them, but there is a fair amount of information of interest to advanced amateurs as well.

The book begins with two chapters about telescope optics and different types of telescopes, with something of the history of telescopes along the way. Chapter 3 covers the pros and cons of each type in some detail, ending with a quiz where you add the point values of your answers to show what type you should buy - fun, as long as you don't take it too seriously. Chapter 4 is a still more detailed look at the offerings of different manufacturers, again sorted by type. Phil goes easy on the major manufacturers, judging from some of the tales of woe I've heard; but the treatment is fair and useful. Chapter 5 compares the myriad eyepieces available to go with these scopes. Both these chapters have appendices where the information is laid out in convenient tables.

Chapter 6 covers finders and filters, other books and software, cameras and CCD's. One thing I would have appreciated would be a similar appendix covering all the competing software packages, what they do well and which was the best for each purpose. As I wrote two months ago, I have purchased a number of these packages and started to evaluate them; maybe I need to write this comparison myself.

Chapter 7 was the most interesting to me - a description of projects you can make, from a collimation tool to a video camera bracket to a binocular chair - the latter I want to get started on Real Soon Now. `Till Death Do You Part' is on care of your scope, and repeats sage advice against unnecessary cleaning, as well as how to collimate your optics.

The last and longest chapter, `It's Time to Solo!', covers the targets to point your scope at (moon, planets, comets, sun, deep-sky), a description of a few dozen of the best deep-sky objects, and a brief introduction to astrophotography. This will be of less interest to advanced amateurs, who probably have more detailed sources of this type of information. One might question why to include this in a book about equipment, but it probably does make it more useful for the beginner who may buy only this book.

Parts of the book overlap with the Dickinson & Dyer book mentioned above, but the treatment of telescopes and eyepieces is much more detailed. Overall, a fine book, highly recommended for a beginning amateur, and recommended for an advanced amateur looking to buy a new scope or eyepiece.

              Book Description

With more than one hundred four-color maps supplemented by photographs and reconstructions, the Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War provides the first major visualization of that war as well as a penetrating and comprehensive analysis of the conflict based on both U.S. and Vietnamese postwar accounts. The atlas begins with an overview of the foundations of the Vietnamese nation-state, including its almost two-thousand-year struggle to break free from Chinese domination and its century-long fight to gain its independence from French colonial rule, and sets the 1954 partition of the country and the subsequent American involvement there in their cold war context. U.S. involvement is examined in depth to provide an understanding of why America intervened and why, despite its battlefield successes, it ultimately failed to obtain its political objective: a free and independent South Vietnam. Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr., examines the many anomalies of the war, including why the United States bought the Communist propaganda line that relations between China and Vietnam were as "the lips to the teeth," when Vietnam actually felt betrayed by its Chinese "ally." Unlike most U.S. writings on the war, which end with the 1968 Tet Offensive - a failing analogous to ending the study of World War II with Stalingrad or Guadalcanal - Summers' essay draws on North Vietnamese sources to explode the notion that the war was an indigenous South Vietnamese uprising. He details the destruction of the Viet Cong guerrillas in the Tet Offensive and tells how the war was primarily a conventional one waged by the regular armed forces of North Vietnam during the last seven years. The atlas examines the curious effect of the U.S. antiwar movement, the "Vietnamization" of the war, the Americans' cynical abandonment of their Asian ally, and the final North Vietnamese multi-division blitzkrieg that led to the fall of Saigon in 1975, as well as Robert McNamara's self-serving apologia that the war was militarily unwinnable from the onset. Given the strong emotion involved, many of the Vietname generation may continue to be wedded to their prejudices. But it has been said that those who came of age after the war know there is a skeleton in the family closet and now want to be let in on the secret. An examination of the forensic evidence, the Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War is the closest we have yet come to a thorough autopsy of that debacle.

4 out of 5 stars The War in Graphic Detail.......2006-08-31

All in all, this book is a pretty good narrative of the entire Vietnam War. The text is simple and concise, thus making it a relatively easy read. It is about 213 pages long but the reader will only read half these pages as the other half contain full page maps. The book is broken into seven major sections. Each section starts with a short narrative. Thus, the reader has a quick understanding of the upcoming battles.

The only shortcoming of the text is that the descriptions of the various battles are sometimes too brief. The Battle of the Ia Drang is essentially described as the Americans landing on an NVA Regiment, a battle ensued, the Americans called in air strikes and won the day. The reader is forced to look at other sources for any meaningful description of the battle.

Nevertheless, this book has some very good qualities. The often vague battlefield descriptions are overcome by excellent graphic maps. These full color maps provide a clear detail of the various units in a battle as well as their line of attack or retreat. The book also contains a good selection of photographs relating to each specific battle. Finally, this book is more than a collection of maps, pictures, and brief battlefield narratives. It also describes events and organizations such as MACV, the Green Berets, and the assassination of President Diem.

Bottom line: this book is a quick easy read about the entire Vietnam War. Although the battle narratives are weak, they are compensated by excellent graphic maps. This is a good addition to any home library about the Vietnam War.

5 out of 5 stars A visual diary of the War........2002-01-14

This is a beautifully illustrated book with battlefield plans of the Vietnam Wars and details of all the troop movements. It places the reader right at the center of the war zone. The text on the left handside details the events involved at the time while maps are drawn on the right handside.

The texts are concised, focused and give the reader a clear and broad picture of the war.

2 out of 5 stars Problems with the Maps.......2000-05-28

Too many things are shown in the wrong places on the maps.

The most hilarious example is on page 97. Laos had two capital cities: the royal capital of Luang Prabang, where the (purely ceremonial) king lived, and the administrative capital of Vientiane, where there was an actual government. On this map, Luang Prabang has been moved across the border into North Vietnam (a very strange place for the royal capital of Laos), while Vientiane has been moved across the other border into Thailand. The same map also has the town of Vinh, in North Vietnam, shifted westward from its actual location near the coast; it appears on this map to be closer to the Laotian border than to the sea.

Flip one page back to look at the map on page 95, which shows the Tonkin Gulf Incidents and the U.S. air strikes of August 5, 1964. This map has Vinh in the right place, but Hanoi has been mislocated; it is shown as being southwest of Haipong (Hanoi is actually northwest of Haiphong). More important, the map shows Hon Gai, one of the targets of the U.S. air strikes, as being right next to the Chinese border. Hon Gai is actually well to the southwest of the location shown; if it had been close to the Chinese border, Lyndon Johnson would not have approved the strike against it in this operation. The location shown for the aircraft carrier Constellation, which launched the planes for the strike against Hon Gai, is also seriously inaccurate.

A small inset map on page 95 shows the tracks of the two U.S. destroyers Maddox and Turner Joy, on the night of August 4, 1964, and the tracks of objects that appeared on their radar, believed to be torpedo boats attacking them. The track shown for the supposed torpedo boat designated V2 bears no resemblance to any track that shows in the records of the destroyers, and the track shown for V1 does not bear a close resemblance to any track that shows in the records of the destroyers.

I have not found so many errors in other maps in this atlas, but I have found more than I liked. The one thing an atlas is absolutely supposed to do is show things in the correct locations on the maps.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1998-12-09

Adds a new dimension sorely lacking in other good books about Vietnam. Good historical coverage all the way back to pre-history, sharp clear graphics and comprehensive coverage. I was there in 1968-69 and think this book is a valuable addition to anyone's Vietnam collection -- or a fine place to start if you are just learning about this country and its wars. Kudos to Colonel Summers, the author, for producing such a fine atlas.

              5 out of 5 stars Complete,straight to the point,beautifully illustrated.......1998-11-20

This book provides much needed information on how the biggest campaigns of both the Indochina War and Vietnam War,referred too (rightly)as the Second Indochina War,were fought. Here you will find detailed maps and narratives showing the development of a given battle or campaign.

This book dispels the idea that somehow the military operations in Indochina could not be traced in a clear, coherent way.THE HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE VIETNAM WAR does just that thanks to excellent, high quality graphics and maps and authoritative commentary from STANLEY KARNOW and HARRY G.SUMMERS.These two historians(in my opinion the top experts on Vietnam)make this book something much more than just a book of maps. From pre-colonial to post-war Indochina, from coverage of set piece battles to Phoenix Program and Naval Forces,to the anti-war movement,My Lai and congress,HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE VIETNAM WAR is THE new reference about the war.

Buy it with confidence.I did and i am not dissapointed.

Buy this book...I did and I'm not dissapointed.HARRY G SUMMERS and STANLEY KARNOW deserve recognition for putting together this masterpiece.

Based on journals and letters of slave traders, merchant seamen, and slaves, themselves, this is a passionate account of the Atlantic slave trade, from its origins in the fifteenth century to it's gradual dissolution in the early 1800s.

                  3 out of 5 stars A description of slave-trading practices.......2005-01-25

If you're looking for vivid details of the humiliations, sufferings, and descriptions of death suffered by West Africans of all ages and conditions during the years 1441-1807, look no further. Instead, you will find descriptions of the practices of slave traders, their government sponsors, their investors, African tribal chiefs ready to barter human life for "luxuries," and the callous attitudes of driven ship captains intent, at all costs, to deliver their human goods in a condition just good enough to be deemed "acceptable and marketable merchandise" in the western world. Much of the latter describes the West Indies. That was the first route. The second route involves transit to the northern colonies. The brokers in the north, in turn, profited by selling the slaves to Southern land owners for badly-needed human labor in the fields. He concludes his book with the beginning of the end of slavery by laws first enacted in Europe, but not totally ending until the Civil War made it a finality. Pope-Hennessy, a Brit by birth and education, writes with an "English high tone." He had very little original documents to use from the period he sought to describe.

This student solutions manual and study guide is practically worthless. It doesn't have solutions to even problems and only a handful of problems at all it also shows examples that you can find in the book already. A solutions manual should at least have answers to problems so when you work the problem you know whether you have done it correctly. This is a total waste of money.

I found that this solutions manual wasn't worth the paper it was written on. I wish that they would print out a master solution manual that students can get for the other 90% of the problems. I have used it maybe twice during the duration of the course.

This is the most poorly written text I have ever used. I bought the student solutions manual also which I thought might help me understand the concepts, but to no avail, the solutions manual jumps from Problem #5 to #21 in one chapter?? Forget about the examples on the text they are totally confusing and don't show you how they arrived with the solution. I am no dummy. This book will make you have low self esteem, thats the way I felt. I have a physics tutor who also said this book makes physics even harder to understand. I trully feel sorry for the student that has to buy this book because the school requires it. I had to buy a bootleg CD with the teacher's solutions on it to fully understand this text! We shouldn't have to do that.

                  Book Description

The main objectives of this introductory physics book are twofold: to provide the student with a clear and logical presentation of the basic concepts and principles of physics, and to strengthen an understanding of the concepts and principles through a broad range of interesting applications to the real world. In order to meet these objectives, emphasis is placed on sound physical arguments and discussions of everyday experiences and observations At the same time, we motivate the student through practical examples that demonstrate the role of physics in other disciplines. The sixth edition features new pedagogy in keeping with the findings of physics education research. The rich, new pedagogy has been integrated within the framework of an established and reliable text, facilitating its use by instructors. The full COLLEGE PHYSICS text, which covers the standard topics in classical physics and 20th century physics, is divided into six parts. COLLEGE PHYSICS, VOLUME 1 covers three of those six parts, including Newtonian mechanics and the physics of fluids (Part I); heat and thermodynamics (Part II); and wave, motion and sound (Part III).

This book is not at all helpful when trying to learn physics. By the time you get done trying to figure out this book and it's examples, you'll have pulled out all your hair. So my advice to if you're going to use this book is shave your head now to save yourself from the pain later. In all reality, I haven't learned anything from this book. It is very disorganized and the chapter problems are rediculous...what makes it better is the examples in the chapter don't correlated but with only a couple of chapter problems.

1 out of 5 stars Not in my worst nightmares..........2001-03-30

I have hated textbooks before, but this one takes the cake. It is quite possibly the worst one that my professor could have chosen. The authors use such a wild mixture of mind-numbingly simple content and obscure, abstract concepts that the picture that they paint is, to put it bluntly, incoherent. They dance around the definition of vocabulary words, always coming close to defining stuff (but never actually coming out and *saying it*), contradict themselves repeatedly, and assume that the reader understands half the concepts before they are even introduced. Perhaps the most irritating thing about this text is the fact that there is *no* glossary to speak of--if the reader doesn't understand the sketchy definition in the chapter or chapter summary, too bad, because that's all you get! Steer clear of this book, if at all possible.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book in combination with class.......2000-09-27

I'm currently using this book in a high school physics course, and have found it to be fairly non-technical. The exercises at the end of each chapter vary in difficulty, from the very straight forward to the very difficult. While this book has many strengths, it should not be used by its self. This book requires equations to be derived in class, as they are simply presented at the beginning of the chapter in the book... Overall, this is a great textbook if you have the mind to be able to derive equations and properties yourself.
