It Was Okay.......2005-10-25
The good news is that the book covers U.S. and other country's accounting standards. The bad news is that the book is not worth the price. I've spent less on similar books where I have learned more. Overall, I was dissappointed with the price.

Offshore Outsourcing: Business Models, ROI and Best Practices
ASIN: 8763001691 |
Product Description
This book addresses the challenges associated with managing global offshoring strategies. Offshoring and offshore outsourcing are hardly new phenomena. What is new is that information technology creates new opportunities for geographically dispersed business activities and enables the fragmentation of the value chain for "traditional" production and service companies. The pace of offshoring is likely to gain further momentum. The authors intention in this book is to "put a face" on some Danish companies as they contemplate and engage in offshoring projects.
When selecting the cases, the authors chose a diverse set that exemplifies the complicated range of challenges that companies face when they migrate products or services. All of the cases were developed on the basis of in-depth field research and close collaboration with the respective company managers.
The book targets bachelor, master and MBA students taking courses on global strategy. It can be used in conjunction with a set of readings and articles on global strategy issues. Although the book is meant to serve as teaching material, the authors hope that business professionals also find inspiration and interesting insights applicable to their own organizations as they search for global offshoring opportunities.

Book Description
Law Without Frontiers is a comparative study dealing with the rules of professional ethics applicable to the cross-border practice of law. It covers the major jurisdictions in this respect, viz. England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. A separate chapter deals with the development in the context of the European Union. The study is based on a questionnaire of the IBA Section on Business Law Subcommittee on the Structure and Ethics of Business Law. Part One of each country's report covers the basic rules applying to the domestic legal profession, such as the method of qualifying as a lawyer, the extent to which the legal services are reserved to lawyers, and the ethical rules which apply to matters like advertising, fees, correspondence, etc. The Second Part sets out what rules the jurisdiction in question imposes on its own lawyers when they are involved outside the jurisdiction. The Third Section deals with the rules which apply to a foreign lawyer (which includes any lawyer admitted in another jurisdiction but not in the local jurisdiction under discussion) practising within the jurisdiction. Both the second and third parts are divided according to the various degrees of possible involvement, ranging from merely advising a foreign client from one's home office to practising from an office in the foreign country. The last Part deals with the various kinds of international associations to which lawyers may belong, such as alliances, office-sharing, and multinational and multidisciplinary partnerships. The editor draws conclusions in the last chapter and sets out where the cross-border practice is heading. A number of useful appendices are supplied, setting out the most important texts, including the IBA International Code of Ethics.

The third edition of Nightwatch continues its tradition of being the best handbook for the beginning astronomer. Terence Dickinson covers all the problems beginners face, starting with the fact that the night sky does not look the way a modern city-dweller expects. He discusses light pollution, how to choose binoculars and telescopes, how to pronounce the names of stars and constellations, telescope mounts, averted vision, and why the harvest moon looks especially bright. Most of the lovely photographs in the book were taken by amateurs, which gives the section on astrophotography a particularly inspirational gleam.
Dickinson's star charts are very handy, each covering a reasonable field of view and mapping the most interesting amateur objects. He gives good advice for planet watching, which he notes "is one of the few astronomical activities that can be conducted almost as well from the city as from dark rural locations."
Altogether, the watchword for Nightwatch is indeed "practical"--this is a book to be used, not just read. Spiral-bound to lie flat or to fold back undamaged, it's a field guide that pulls its own weight in the field. Author Timothy Ferris says, "Like a good night sky, Nightwatch is clear and wind-free. Try it and see for yourself." --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
Thoroughly revised, updated and expanded.
The first three editions of
NightWatch sold more than 600,000 copies, making it the top-selling stargazing guide in the world for the last 20 years. The key feature of this classic title is the section of star charts that are cherished by backyard astronomers everywhere. Each new edition has outsold the previous one because of thorough revisions and additional new material.
NightWatch has been acclaimed as the best general interest introduction to astronomy. The fourth edition has improvements over the 3rd edition in every chapter, including:
- The famous charts, ideal for stargazers using a small telescope or binoculars
- A complete update of the equipment section, including computerized telescopes
- An enlarged photography section, including how-to instructions for using the new generation of digital cameras for astronomical photography, both with and without a telescope
- The tables of future solar and lunar eclipses, planetary conjunctions and planet locations, updated through 2018.
This edition includes for the first time star charts for use in the southern hemisphere. There are also dozens of new photographs throughout the book that show the latest thrilling discoveries made by current space observatories and probes.
Customer Reviews:
Best book for the budding astronomer. .......2007-10-06
I have owned a previous version of Nightwatch and purchased the latest version for updated information on when to view the planets and star charts. For those looking to purchase their first telescope, there is essential information on how to choose and care for your first telescope. The amount of new material and much improved printing and binding were a wonderful plus. This Guide is the best place to start your adventure into astronomy. Highly recommended.
NightWatch A practicle Guide to Viewing the Universe.......2007-10-01
This is the best comprehensive guide to nightime "skylooking" that I have in my library. I have the previous edition and this is much improved and very readable. I have several sky charts, astronomy books and this is the best, hands down.. Thanks Terence Dickinnson.
A wonderful introduction to backyard astronomy.......2007-08-07
This is probably the best book out there for the beginner stargazer. It explains all about the different options for binoculars and telescopes (for instance, you may want to start out with "just" binoculars, and find you enjoy it more!)
Love the star charts, the illustrations, the writing...it's just great. Spiral-bound, we take it with us to every star party.
Excellent guide but the book has a more personal meaning to me........2007-05-24
I consider myself an amateur astronomer although the last time I actively kept an observation journal was nearly 40 years ago. I do follow all events astronomical. It boggles my mind at the discoveries that science has made in the last decade. Imagine, at last count, 277 exosolar planets!
This book was ordered by my father. I bought it and received another one. This book was half of the incident that changed my life. The one I received unexpectedly was the other half.
Anyway, this is a well-illustrated and well-written guide.
buy this book before buying your first telescope.......2007-04-30
I bought this book because of the great reviews amazon costumers were giving. Thanks amazon costumers, I'm glad I bought it! It gives such great information about chosing telescopes. People who have a small telescope (under 4 inches in aperture) may be a little peived about this book because the author doesn't talk very highly of small refractors bought in department stores. Not many authors do. I wish I bought this book first before buying any telescope. I say this in my review title because i highly stress it. I first bought a 70mm refractor when I knew absolutely NOTHING about telescopes (because I did no prior reading), and I ended up sending it back within a month because I started to learn more about them through websites and books. So I bought the spaceprobe 130mm (5.1 inch) by Orion, but the equatorial mount was not my favorite gadget to work with, but it's still a great tool, and it has great reviews, so I'm not going to totally trash it. This book recommends beginner scopes with great aperture and ease of use. He explains a variety of scopes, and what he considers a great buy. I sold my spaceprobe to my colleague and got a 6inch Newtonian Dob. It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm positive I made the right choice based on this book. He goes into eyepeices and everything you need to know about what to buy. Once you've read this book, you've done your homework, and you'll be more confident in buying the right items. If you're going to spend hundreds on a telescope plus accessories, make sure you're not wasting it on the wrong things. I love the glossy pages and colorful images. I highly recommend this book with "Left Turn at Orion". Buy them together if you're totally new at this. One will complement the other. If you have a small rafractor, you will love "Left Turn at Orion" because that is one of the few books that don't insult the small refractors, but tells you how to use them.

Book Description
The serious consequences of vapor cloud explosions, flash fires, and BLEVEs are very well known. Better understanding of the characteristics of these phenomena and models to calculate their consequences are key to effective prevention and mitigation. Cited by EPA in its 1996 document, "Off-site Consequence Analysis Guidance, " the first half of the book describes the characteristics of these phenomena and gives an overview of past experimental and theoretical research and methods to estimate consequences. The second part focuses on methods for consequence estimating by presenting sample problems. The entire book is heavily illustrated with photos, charts, tables, and diagrams, and each chapter has a full set of references for additional reading.

Very Interesting Book.......2001-09-16
I liked this book. It was really interesting, and gave a glimpse inside the shadowy world of dark projects and government coverups along with details and information about life on Mars, and the artifacts left behind by an intelligent civilization in the area of "Inca City". Sure some of the images are a little grainy, but we can't expect Viking and Mariner images to be as clear as Mars Global Surveyor shots. The Viking and Mariner images showed some amazing things like tetrahedral structures and pyramids, one even had a ramp leading off from one of the sides. That is not something that could have happened as a result of wind or natural erosion. There is also what looks like a pteradactyl carved into a burm. Or rather, carved out of a burm next to the boxes that form the 'city foundations'. All in all, it is a good book, that provides an innovative new perspective on Mars, and life that existed on that planet. I would recommend it.
Excellent book with Intriguing Ideas.......2001-09-16
This book was highly readable, and shed light on (not only) the Inca City Mars objects discovered in older NASA photos, but gave an intriguing glimpse into the covert world of dark projects and government coverups which surrounds the principal investigator, Dr. Dan Burisch. The author wrote in first person, which is not all that common nowadays, but it has the advantage of letting readers feel like they are going on a quest with the research team, as more and more anomalies are discovered at the Inca City region. Photos are sometimes grainy, but you have to remember the photos under study were taken before we had the Mars Global Surveyor. Even so, they show some amazing things, like the pyramid structure inside the square boxes, that has sharp edges at the precise angles necessary to create a perfect pyramid. There even appears to be a ramp extending from one face. These are clearly not 'natural' objects, coincidentally sculpted by winds or eroded by running water during the years when Mars had a thicker atmosphere. It makes the case for an intelligent civilization at Inca City, Mars and is a very enjoyable book to read.
Strange things on the surface of Mars.......2000-06-10
This is a very interesting and yet seriously flawed book about the possibility of artificial constructions on the surface of Mars. The book itself is a serious study of a site photographed and nicknamed "Inca City: Mars" by NASA. The site was discovered on photographs taken by US space probes. The site looks almost identical to the ancient Inca capital in Peru. The book also includes paranoia about a government coverup of what is actually up there. It is difficult to know how to evaluate these facts. In the book itself we follow researches as they squint their eyes at blurry photographs and wonder what they are looking. Are they seeing the abandoned wreckage of a dead civilization or are their eyes playing games with them. They see another face on Mars, and walls and towers, and even glymphs. One sees glymphs in Arizona, but what are they doing on Mars? To find out the truth, read the book. But be forwarned that it is a difficult read, and the book has typos and the format is not professional. The best thing is that in a few years we will have much better photographs of Mars and all our questions will be answered.

Book Description
"I truly love your little novel. It reads splendidly, and was quite delightful."--Douglas Messerli, Publisher, Green Integer
"I congratulate you for it. It's very inventive, makes a lot of head (way) humor by all the name-plays. And the self-conscious narrator is also a fine turn in the narrative. Many laughs, recognitions and delights in the text...and the satiric level is also suggestive and successful..."--San Francisco poet and linguist Jack Hirschman
The Last Tale of Mendel Abbe Mendel Abbe is an aging manic depressive story teller deeply affected by events in the world. On September 15, 2001, perchance, Mendel is napping alongside his wife as they drive home on the New Jersey Turnpike after a visit to old friends northwest of Philadelphia. Somehow, implausibly, the events of four days previous have escaped their attention.
Awakening near Newark, Mendel is incredulous to see the absence in the New York skyline, the clouds of smoke billowing from where the twin towers once stood. His shock becomes more traumatizing when he experiences TV and the government turning the tragic events into a circus of bizarre and misplaced chauvinist rhetoric about the heroism and victimization of the United States in modern history. Driven by angst, and his own nature, Mendel embarks upon a tale taller than the towers to recuperate the sad state of history. For his project he chooses to resurrect a group of foppishly naïve characters from a little known Jewish shtetl in 19th century Poland, people invented by an earlier New Yorker, Solomon Simon, for the amusement of Jewish children. The name of the place: Chelm; of the people: the Wise Men of. And they are coming to the U.S. to help Sonny Bush fix everything. You'll see.

Spying for America.......2000-05-10
This book is a most excellent read. It is good for people casually interested in espionage and those with more background in it. One of the most overlooked areas was the periods between the world wars and the late 19th Century which is well treated. It is also written in a fast paced style that is never boring. I highly recommend this book. I have several other books by the author after reading this one and have been impressed with them all. A definite "can't miss" book.
Multiple true life stories about spies and spying........1998-10-23
John Wortman p.4 The Fine Art of Spying is a collection of true, and truly amazing, stories written by Somerset Maugham, Anthony Abbott, Winston Churchill, Fletcher Pratt, Alan Hynd, Kurt Singer, and other famous authors. But The Fine Art of Spying would not have come together without the editing of Walter B. Gibson. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about clever and incredible strategies that people use when they find themselves in difficult situations. Although The Fine Art of Spying is a book about the exiting events and missions that certain spies go through, the book does not include 100% concentrated action. So, if you are looking for a pointless, plotless, "everybody dies" novel, (which I DO enjoy reading) I don't recommend this book to you. Otherwise I recommend it to anyone. Although this is a great book, it does have a couple of boring parts. There is a story in The Fine Art of Spying entitled "The Traitor." This is one of the book's less enjoyable stories, in fact, I think it is the worst one in the book. "The Traitor" is about one spy trying to get another spy to work for his network. This may sound okay but it wasn't because the first spy did nothing to persuade the other spy. This makes it bad because there was no conflict and without conflict there is no action. Don't worry, however, there are really only two bad stories. "The Traitor" and "Prisoner in the Legation" are those stories, but I found "Prisoner in the Legation" not to be as boring as "The Traitor." There are, however, many good stories in this book. One of my favorites is called "Encounter at Treasure Island." This story is about an ordinary guy who gets tangled up with some Japanese spies and tries to get on the inside of their network and obtain enough information about them to get them arrested and convicted. The Fine Art of Spying is a great collection of some excellent spy stories. I liked this book because most of the stories were extremely exciting and they told what real people have done in actual situations. Many of the strategies that these people thought of I would not have dreamed of, so my attention was held. Even though the interesting aspects varied from story to story, some stories were very boring, while others almost forced the reader to continue. Over all I highly recommend The Fine Art of Spying.

Public Vows: A History of Marriage and the Nation
ASIN: 0415144345 |
Book Description
Christianity and Sexuality in the Early Modern World surveys the ways in which Christian ideas and institutions shaped sexual norms and conduct from the time of Luther and Columbus to that of Thomas Jefferson. It is global in scope and geographic in organization, with chapters on Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia, and North America. The volume explores such topics as marriage and divorce, fornication and illegitimacy, clerical sexuality, witchcraft and love magic, homosexuality, and moral crimes. It examines learned and popular notions of sexuality in and outside of Christian Europe, the development of institutions to enforce Christian standards, and the role of class, race, family, economy, and local traditions in shaping sexual behavior.
Merry Wiesner-Hanks sets her findings within the context of many historical fields--the history of sexuality and the body, women's history, legal, religious and gay and lesbian history, and colonial studies--and provides readers with an introduction to key theoretical and methodological issues in each of these areas.
