Book Description
In this new book Robert Stevens looks at the English Judiciary from an historical perspective with especial reference to its changing role in the 20th Century. He examines current debates about the position of the judges in the light of the possible future role of the judiciary in the Constitution. The centrepiece of the book is a detailed study of the political influences on the judiciary and the influence the judiciary has had on politics in the 20th Century. It concludes with a series of proposed reforms to ensure that the English judiciary will both maintain its strength but enhance its utility in the 21st Century. It offers no simple-minded argument for separation of powers but analyses what is needed to clarify the balance of powers and to advance the debate about the role of an unelected judiciary in an increasingly democratic society.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome reference.......2003-05-16
It is a great reference for serious scientists. Don't bother though if you just like reading the stuff because it's mostly just charts and tables with a little bit of text. The particle review and the sections on the properties of organic and inorganic compounds are great. It has lists and structural formulas for every substance known at the time of publication.

Book Description
This book is a trip from the very beginning of the universe, the Big Bang, through galaxy, solar system, and earth formation and on to the beginning of life and subsequent evolution of that life on earth. The framework is simple, the history of the universe, earth and life, with an understanding of where we came from and where we might be headed.

In the fourth century B.C., the magnificent Museum and Library of Alexandria, Egypt were built. It was one of the earliest scientific centers of research and was a focal point of the exchange of ideas and information. At one point, the Library housed more than 500,000 books. It was a golden age for science lasting more than 700 years. But in the fourth century A.D., the Library and Museum were burned to the ground. Not one book remains from the great Library, and much of the research done by the finest minds of the day was lost forever. About the same time, the world was plunged into the Dark Ages and learning and education were placed on hold for more than 800 years. It is clear that what happened in Alexandria centuries ago was because the scientists and scholars inside could not or did not communicate the significance of their discoveries and knowledge to the public outside. This book is an attempt to convey all that science has learned about how we came to be. It is a trip from the very beginnings of the universe - the Big Bang - through galaxy formation and on to the beginning of life and subsequent evolution of that life on Earth. The focus is not only on the scientific discoveries that have allowed us to know what we know, but the scientists who made the breakthroughs. It is an effort to give us a glimpse of what has been happening in our research laboratories ever since the Dark Ages, but in particular over the last few decades. The framework is simple, the history of the universe, Earth and life, with an understanding of where we came from and where we might be headed.
Customer Reviews:
Great book to learn about the Earth.......2007-02-02
I read this book as part of a Geology class taught by the author at USF. The book is fascinating and written in a very unpretentious down to earth style that feels like a conversation. The author covers everything as the title implies and addresses many present day issues as well in a responsible and thoughtful manner. This is one of the few texbooks that I kept simply because it is a great reference book to have in the house. The news stories by the media are notoriously lacking in understanding and looking through this book will answer many questions. I refer to it often and after just rereading a few pages today I decided it was time to post a review. I believe the author is coming out with an updated version. I am not a geology major but I will definitely buy it as this book covers things we all should know as humans.

San Antonio, Texas.--My Dear Chum: Dad and I left Hot Springs because the man who kept the hotel where we stopped got prejudiced against me. I suppose I did carry the thing a little too far. You see dad has got into this breakfast food habit, and reads all the advertisements that describe new inventions of breakfast food, and he has got himself so worked up over the bran mash that he is losing appetite for anything substantial, and he is getting weak and nutty. Book Description
Highly acclaimed military strategist and writer Ralph Peters challenges America's defense establishment and national leadership with startling insights and no- holds-barred criticism. His radical assessment of the future of conflict and the kinds of enemies we will face has already excited international controversy and influenced policy.
Peters identifies a "new warrior class" and a new culture of conflict that could undo America on the battlefields of the future, as seen in the events of September 11, 2001. He broadly reinterprets the meaning of strategy. His writing tough, yet elegant makes dramatic new ideas accessible to the general reader, as well as to businessmen, diplomats, and soldiers.
Will America Win? Yes, but only if her leaders open their minds to the new and dangerous international environment left in the wake of the Cold War. Includes a new introduction that reflects upon the events of September 11, 2001. Now available in paperback for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Bit outdated, but a rather insightful essay by one of the few honest men in the business of making war..........2006-07-20
While this essay (as Peters calls it) was written close at the heels of the events of September 11th, 2001, it is a rather insightful read about fundamentalist extremists (which could also be extended to run of the mill insurgencies, local militancies and other organized gangs such as drug cartels) and measures that a state ought to take to combat them. While this book was written before a greater understanding of the Iraq war was gained, this essay points out the need for a relentless pursuit of the culprits of the WTC disaster with overwhelming force. Unfortunately, while this strategy might seem a bit unpragmatic to most who have been fed on a diet of hollywood movies and glenn meade novels about surgical strikes into the heart of the extremists with a macho delta sniper i.e. rambo; the approach in hindsight of the events that trasnspired since "mission accomplished" to date in iraq, is rather brilliant. The strategy of an overwhelming, singleminded, and above all persistent pursuit of the aggressors would have paid rich dividends in Afghanistan and can still help combat the insurgencies in Iraq. Unfortunately the political climate would not permit that. To successfully combat the insurgency, American and its allies would need to increase troop strength and surgically dismantle the infrastructure of the insurgents through periodic strikes and use maximum firepower at their disposal. This as Peters suggests would be highly successful in curbing the insurgency and i have to aggress. Though the collateral damage would be high, but it would be equivalent to the trickle that is being claimed by the insurgency over the years that it is still managing to survive.
Moroever, Peters deserves credit for boldly suggesting ideas that some of us might value as an infringement of our rights. He claims that like the internment of the Japanese americans during the Second World War, we must be prepared for a temporary lapse of civil liberties. And while that is indeed inevitable that the intelligently named, if not oxymoronic, USA PATRIOT Act was the need of the hour on the 12th of September 2001. But then he also calls for returning to our values and way of life... i.e. letting more objective minds such as those of Russ Feingold prevail.
Finally, Peters also points out where the insurgencies of the future will arise, and provides a rather remarkable list of characteristics that would help identify nations where the future warriors, i.e. future extremists would arise from.
A bit old now, especially after the million and one experts we have all heard, but it is still a very remarkable piece of work.
Amazon should replace the lead Editorial Review for this book.......2006-04-28
The "Kirkus Reviews" of 1999 (pre-9-11 by a couple years) grossly underestimated the dangers we face from terrorists, as most of us did. They do give Peters some credit:
" ... these essays pose major questions about Americas military preparedness to fight the type of conflicts likely to arise in the 21st century, those involving terrorist organizations ... "
"Peters examines such possibilities with a sharp eye ..."
"When the author gets down to specific topics, such as the future of armored warfare or soldiering in an urban environment, he is at his best ... "
But the reviewer leaves us with the general impression not to buy this book:
"While his analysis is cogent, his conclusions for example, that the spectacularly expensive weapons systems ... are hardly as shocking or controversial as he himself would have the reader believe."
" ... his essays are marred by trite epigrams placed throughout the text ... and Peters' prose is pedantic, clich? ridden, and repetitive."
All of the above may be true. I didn't read the book.
However, maybe it's time for Amazon to reread some of the other reviews they buried back then and replace the more dismissive one they chose from Kirkus Reviews. Based on these snippets, they sound glowing and right-on:
Strategic Review
"Peters has been the most profound, prolific and provocative essayist on the future of the military in the past decade."
the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"...arguably the best thinker and certainly the best writer on international affairs in America today."
The Washington Monthly
"...the way [Peters] heaves rocks indicates a strong arm...unbridled intellectual energy."
the Marine Corps Gazette
"...a master craftsman...In sharp contrast to the predictions of many other futurists, Peters' essays have a long shelf life."
Parameters, the Journal of the U.S. Army War College
"...Every chapter challenges conventional wisdom...entertaining, thoughtful, direct, and always though-provoking, Peters is a man who makes us think."
Book Description
"[Ralph Peters is] considered to be one of the best military minds of his generation . . ." --Newsweek
The new warrior.......2006-03-03
This author is well known for his wonderful novels. This came through as I began traversing through the first chapters. As I progressed I became more enthralled with what he had to say. Ralph has a keen eye. Even though the book was written in '99, it is not outdated. Many of his insights on future warfare have come to fruition. He served in the military and is now retired. He then used his skills for government intelligence. I am not sure if he still has an influence. If he does not, we surely need him. The government is increasingly trying to eliminate human contact from warfare. Ralph does not believe it will ever happen. Technologies are playing a bigger and bigger role. For the future is urban warfare, building to building. Who are are new enemies. The warrior. We are not fighting a state or a country anymore. The warrior is a non-soldier (no uniform).
Rome's greatest failure was it's inability to understand the changing world (their education systems, their religions, their culture). Ring familiar? Are we to fall as Rome?
The author gives us ways on dealing with our enemies and how we need to go about it. We need to fight to win, not to be bogged down with politics and rules. A quicker fight means less casualties.
The only moral we need to call from the Iliad is "It is foolish to underestimate the complexity and determination of the killers from the other shore".
He goes further: The greatest danger to us will come with the development of behavioral control weapons. It's inevitable. Attacking the body has been a sloppy and inefficient way of making war. Attacking the mind may prove the culmination of military history. We need to eliminate where the threat originates, in the mind and soul.
Ralph Peters is at the top of his form..........2005-11-15
[My retirement as an intelligence officer was in 1996. Working today as a computer combat simulations and modeling manager - my bookshelves are stacked with the assembled works of Ralph Peters. Computer modeling of urban combat has shown me how prescient he was.]
As a military (Intelligence) contemporary of Ralph Peters - I thank God he saw fit to leave the Army and publish, publish and publish again - as only one who has worn the uniform can - and speak to us as an informed visionary - as only he could. "Fighting for the Future" is a compendium of essays, speeches and articles that gave to us in the mid-90's - a road map to the future of assymetrical warfare. While not 100% accurate as to what is happening 10 years later - his choices of topics have immense importance to the military's current war on Islamo-Fascism.
Mostly ignored by a succession of Army Chiefs of Staff - and even many within the Army Intelligence community - Colonel Peters leads us down a path with his material - to the present day IEDs exploding along "Route Irish", from the Green Zone to Baghdad International Airport. His vision of "trans-national un-uniformed (stateless) fighters" in urban combat - hammering against cold war structured armies - take us directly to November 2004 Fallujah. Every flaming military convoy vehicle brings me back to book chapters on the future of urban warfare combat vehicles.
These chapters remind me over and over again that the tragically miscast up-armored HMMWV (M1114) was never intended to be an assault vehicle and the Stryker wheeled APC/IFV is out of its element in any urban fight. Peters bucks the trend - the current thinking - the group think - that obstructs our military planning and procurement. Trust me as one who knows - you can't get promoted in today's Army thinking, talking and acting like Ralph Peters.
Every chapter is a work unto itself. The ideas provoke - make you search - and lead you to some pretty astounding conclusions for a piece of writing originally put to paper almost 10 years ago. A piece of literature for historians and military leaders alike. Those who follow trends in military policies, planning, tactics, strategy and affairs - this book is for you!
My autographed copies come from the Army Command and General Staff College library at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. You don't have to make the trip - Amazon can do it for you...
A Street Fight In The Making .......2005-03-21
Sharp and to the point, those are the words that I would use to describe this author. My romantic view of a grisly old military vet with equal numbers of battle scares to chips on his shoulder is jump started by this book. The author gives the reader his view of the world from the late 1990's to the 9 / 11 attacks. His main focus is the U.S. military and the possible conflicts it will need to be engaged in over the next decade or so. He also opines on some social trends that, although marginally effect the U.S. security equation, seamed to me to be a bit of a stretch. The author is excellent at describing military issues, but I felt myself viewing his writing on social trends with a skeptical eye. I felt the prism he was looking through was one a bit bias toward viewing a world where all motives lead to military conflict
The comments he has on the focus of the U.S. military is eerie given the Iraq war. If you have followed the current conflict then you will be struck by how so many chapters of the book pretty much give a run down of how the conflict would turn out and the pit falls that awaited the U.S, all this two years before the war started. I can understand how many of the top tier military commanders today have a negative view of the author because he does not mix words. He lets the reader know that many decisions that are being made today and that have been made over the past ten years, were to fight an enemy that does not exist. Judging by this authors book, nothing short of a full revamping of the current structure of the military is needed. New weapons systems, equipment, training and force make up are just the start. The author spells out so many areas of weakness given our new enemy of disaffected and religiously inspired mercenaries that that you wonder how we are going to truly suppress and overcome the enemies in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Overall I found the book interesting and insightful. Sure not all of the themes of the book are original thought, but the author has just the right mix of good ideas, fiery bombast, and old fashioned common sense that you can do nothing less then stand up and pay attention. Large organizations are slow to change, the larger the more time they take. What this author tells us and what the 9 / 11 attacks showed us is that we need to actively change how we view the new enemy. My concern is that the needed changes the U.S. military and intelligence gathering organizations are facing will be at a far slower pace then the new tactics of the terrorists. If you are interested in the U.S. military and the warfare we are going to be viewing on CNN over the next 20 years then you will enjoy this book.

Book Description
Russians are suppressing the Chechen; Ibo nationalism may yet tear Nigeria apart. With the end of the Cold War, any of the world's stateless peoples could be in tomorrow's headlines. This book provides an essential guide to the stateless nations suppressed or ignored during the Cold War. In more than 200 national surveys, the volume highlights the historical, political, social, economic, and diplomatic evolution of many of the currently emerging nations without states. Including nations from all continents--from the Chechen in Eastern Europe, to the Ibo in Africa, and the Quebeckers in North America--the book addresses the current nationalist resurgence by focusing on the most basic element of any nationalism, the nation itself. The book provides the only source of concise information on stateless nations. Each entry includes the nation's name and alternative names, population statistics, information on major languages and religions, geographical information, independence declarations, information on the national flag, a brief sketch of the primary national group or groups, and a profile of the nation's history and national development to the present. A chronological appendix of declarations of independence helps to set the waves of nationalism in an historical context. A second appendix provides a geographic listing, by region and nation, of national organizations.
Customer Reviews:
A total disaster.......2007-04-20
The same text describes 3 of Minahan's books I own, as the text describing these nations given as examples is a copy-paste with very minor differences in all the books: Nations without States: A Historical Dictionary of Contemporary National Movements, One Europe, Many Nations: A Historical Dictionary of European National Groups and Encyclopedia of the Stateless Nations: Ethnic and National Groups Around the World. Guess I have not made much bigger stupidities in my life than to ordering all of these books at the same time.
Unfortunately, this book is a disaster. It is full of mistakes, especially about the given number of peoples, but it has historical or linguistic mistakes as well. For example, I'll give just a few data about Livonians:
Population: Minahan (M.) gives 100 000 (!), while the actual number is only a few hundreds at present. Though, historically Livonians once inhabited most part of today's Latvian coastline, the assimilation took part mostly centuries ago, so that people do not identify themselves as Livonians.
Historical Livonian province was only in its southwestern part ethnically Livonian, and the data M. gives about the Livonians in Estonia, is totaaly mistaken. The so-called Livonian cultural center of Massiaru town in Estonia has nothing to do with Livonians, and, after all, is only a smaal village.
While Livonians are a really tiny nation, the number is incorrect about some not so small nations as well, including in cases when the census data is available even by Internet. Some examples:
Ingrians: by M. 90 000 in Russia, 20 000 in Estonia and 250 000 in Finland. Actually, the total number was 67 813 at 1989 in Soviet Union, and all the Ingrians in Finland migrated there after the S.U. collapsed.
Karels: by M. 26% of the people of Karelian Republic in Russia, actually about 10%.
Mordvins: 1,848 millions by M., actually less than 1,1 millions.
And, one example from central Europe - Sorbs: by M. 543 000, including 40 000 in Poland; actually, about 60 000, as well as all in Germany.
So, after the data what can easily be controlled, how can you trust the data what is harder to check?
As a conclusion - I cannot find any more misleading so-called scientific book.
