          Book Description

A comprehensive and widely used text, The Oil and Gas Lease in Canada has been extensively cited, quoted, and relied upon by the courts. The first edition, published in 1973, served as the definitive legal guide for all those engaged in securing and developing mineral rights in Canada. The revised and updated second edition, published in 1985, dealt with the nature and function of oil and gas leases, the procedures of entering into leases, the most common clauses and their effectiveness, and possible hazards and loop-holes. An important appendix to the second edition was the first model lease drafted specifically for the Canadian industry. That model was a fundamental source in the creation of a Canadian oil and gas lease by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen (CAPL). Because today virtually all leases follow the CAPL form, the third edition examines these leases in detail. In addition, John Ballem takes into account new developments and in the way of decided cases since 1985. Like its predecessors, this edition is designed as a user-friendly road map through the maze of complexities that surround the Canadian oil and gas lease, and the very substantial body of law that has arisen around it. The oil and gas lease is an ever evolving document and as such, those who work with it must continuously adapt to the endless variety of combinations and permutations that arise with each new situation. But it is this variety that makes the oil and gas lease such a challenging and fascinating instrument to work with and The Oil and Gas Lease in Canada such an essential book.

                          Book Description

This volume was cited as Best Seller in Geology according to Library Journal Academic Newswire, November 2006!

The most relevant contributions on Mexican Paleontology are described by specialists. Diverse aspects of almost every fossil group are reviewed. Information on recent advances of important localities is provided.

This book will offer updated information useful to the fields of stratigraphy, sedimentology, tectonics, paleobiogeography, paleoclimatology and evolution. The first comprehensive source of information about Mexican fossils in English.

A very important added value to this book is the rather extensive bibliography of almost 1000 references related to the central topic, invaluable information which by itself constitutes a tribute to the memory of pioneer contributions by researchers that have worked in Mexico for the past two centuries

                              Book Description

When Micah was five years old, he lost his parents to a horrible accident. He was convinced he would have died himself, had it not been for his guardian angel—in the form of a little girl he never saw again.

Now, over twenty years later, Micah believes life has grown too hard to bear. He decides to end it all...but the attempt fails ridiculously.

Enter Coltan—a sadistic, bumbling "agent for the afterlife" who has come to collect Micah's soul. But one, small technicality prevents him from carrying out his mission: Micah isn't dead yet.

Rejuvenated by his new lease on life, Micah's determined to set things right. One good thing comes in Christine, a young homeless woman he befriends. Yet soon Micah discovers that his days are numbered, for Death itself is hunting him down. And it is Micah's guardian angel Christine—who will decide his soul's fate when the time comes.

Life, it seems, isn't the only thing that's a bitch.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN HEAVEN WITHOUT REALLY DYING.is not a self-help book, but a darkly satirical, modern-day urban fairy tale concerning the adventures of a young man coming to terms with life, death, and all their crummy consequences. It's also the underground novel that prompted a letter of complaint from a member of the Church of Scientology, even though the author wrote enough to offend just about everybody.

4 out of 5 stars A series of unfortunate, and fortunate, events.......2005-01-06

The author sent me a galley copy of this book for review. It tells the tale of Micah Cohen, who was in a terrible car accident as a child, in which his parents were killed. Micah might have died, too, except for intervention by a little girl with red hair. The loss of his parents haunts Micah, and he grows up sulky, aloof, depressive, and, eventually, suicidal.

When his suicide attempt goes awry, Micah embarks on a series of supernatural experiences, with his soul at stake. The story becomes more complex with the re-appearance of the little red-headed girl (now grown up into a "prostitute"); a representative of the Netherworld, named Coltan; a little hearing-impaired boy named Tobey, his family, and his dog.

Is this a great novel? No. The writing is a little underdetailed, especially in the beginning. There are small, transitional segments, where things go too fast and without enough explanation. However, these faults were not extreme or disruptive.

The story is reminiscent of Piers Anthony's "On A Pale Horse" and "For Love of Evil," plus it reminded me of the movie, "Defending Your Life," although I'm not sure why.

I hope that Mr. McDaniel continues to write, and to grow in his writing. A sequel, focusing on Tobey, might be interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars as a 'young adult' read.......2004-12-12

Probably 4 stars for more mature readers. The author sent me a galley copy of this book for review.

The basic story's a simple one. A young man, orphaned as a child, haunted by unexceptional experience, loss, solitude, is suicidal. After an attempted suicide he encounters a metaphysical being of the negative genre, makes a deal of the not- exactly- traditional- Faustian variety to continue with life a while. Our hero then discovers an angel, who's been watching him all along, and becomes something of a pawn in the struggle between two vague forces, a tug-of-war for his soul, his future, his manner of dying.

The plotting is fast-paced, characters are well developed and amusing, dialogue is mostly crisp and well handled. The book is a fun read, and although the author clearly intended a higher message for it, I don't believe it's entirely successful in that regard for mature humans faced with suicidal tendencies, depression and the dark closed vessel life sometimes becomes for many people.

That's the reason I've chosen to rate this book as 5 stars for young adults. I believe it might be mildly helpful as a thought-provoking read with energy, entertainment and an understanding of some of the mysteries of life for young people just beginning their stroll along the tight-rope. The theme might seem slightly frayed on the edges for more sophisticated readers.

Funny in a really weird, offbeat way. Though a bit too sentimental at times and uneven in tone.

                              4 out of 5 stars Dark, sick, twisted...and wonderful.......2003-06-26

Sometimes a book you've never heard of comes your way, and when you read it, it takes you by surprize. This is such a book. I read some of the reviews on Amazon and was intrigued, so I ordered a copy.

"How to Succeed in Heaven Without Really Dying" may not be a great literary masterwork. The writing style is amicable, even eloquent at times, but it lacks refinement and occasionally -- as does the story -- lapses into clumbsiness. McDaniel isn't in same league as Charles Adams, whose influence is easily apparent in the story, but perhaps such comparisons aren't fair. But what his novel lacks in refinement it more than makes up with charm.

McDaniel does succeed in creating some wonderful characters and clever situations, laced with a hilarious and occasionally sick and twisted sense of humor. The book's first act showcases blistering comic shenanigans, but with a lead character who is both pitiful and more than a bit annoying, the first few chapters are a challenge to flip through, even if the book is relatively brief.

The setup is this: Micah is a New York businessman, whose miserable life has made him more than a bit cynical. After a failed suicide attempt, Coltan, a supernatural "agent for the afterlife", comes 'round to collect Micah's soul. The problem: Micah isn't dead yet, and so begins a tug-of-war between the natural world and what lies beyond.

Act I has funny moments, but its sole purpose seems to be describing the severity of Micah's miserable existance. Yet once Coltan enters, things pick up considerably. Coltan ranks as one of the most sadistic and entertaining characters in recent comic fantasy, bumbling and moronic at times, charming and sinister at others. Think of him as a cross between Gollum and your typical fast-talking Wall Street broker from hell.

Micah's attempts to correct his ways are surprisingly refreshing (particularly because he fails in spite of his best intentions), and the introduction of Micah's guardian angel, Christine, brings in a romantic subplot that is both humorous and touching.

But the shortcomings of the book's first half are more than redeemed in the second. Realizing not just that his life is worth living, but that he has been, in fact, his own worst problem all along, Micah's change of heart makes him much more endearing, both to the other characters and to the reader.

The supernatural elements to the story are sporatic -- Coltan pops up every now and then, enlivening things up with morbid glee. Filling in the holes are some truly wonderful subplots: Micah's relationship with the insensitive, bullying uncle who raised him (whom he later learns is dying), and a nurturing friendship with a young deaf boy. These fragmented storylines, added to a fostering romance between Micah and Christine (in the novel's weakest scene, our hero has sex with his guardian angel -- bet Frank Capra never saw THAT one coming), would normally give such a novel an episodic, uneven tone.

But, daring to use a biblical pun, the last act is a revelation. McDaniel does the unthinkable here: he takes the scattered, fragmented parts to the story and throws them all together in a truly rousing climax that is greater than the sum of its parts. It's funny, exciting, poignant, even SCARY, with some big surprizes and nice twists that even this normally jaded reviewer didn't see coming. (Readers will take particular delight with the novel's epilogue... A CLASSIC.)

Hardly a classic, but fun and giddy just the same, "How to Succeed in Heaven" is a notable work, certainly worthy of the short time one takes to read it. If "Bruce Almighty" can be a movie blockbuster, than this heavenly novel deserves an audience, too.

3 out of 5 stars Humorous and irreverent.......2002-12-29

After a slow and not-so-engaging start, Adam McDaniel kicks it into high gear in his debut novel, HOW TO SUCCEED WITHOUT REALLY DYING. By the halfway point, I couldn't put down this amusing and well told story about a man who argues with death's representative, meets a guardian angel dressed as a prostitute, and discovers the meaning of a good life.

Micah Cohen's parents died in a horrible accident that would have claimed Micah's young life as well if not for a child-angel who breathed life back into him. Despite this second chance, Micah has grown into a miserable, self-pitying man with a dead-end job. When he incompetently fails in a suicide attempt, he meets "Death's little helper" Coltan, a man with a day planner and an attitude who is furious that Micah didn't die on schedule. When Coltan sets another appointment with death for later that day, Micah obliges. But by the time the moment arrives, too much has changed inside Micah - and the story really begins.

Because his premise is somewhat trite, perhaps even sophomoric, McDaniels has his work cut out; however, he mostly rises to the challenge to deliver some genuinely human and amusing moments. Unfortunately, when he goes too far (or not far enough), he ruins his own illusion. One thing is certain: McDaniel knows how to tell a story. You won't be yawning during the climax of *this* novel.

Most of the characterization is so-so, but Coltan is an ingenious creation - he gets more laughs than any other character. Although the writing flows, never getting in the way of the plot, it seemed too pedestrian, too careless for a novel. (McDaniel's bio says he works in film and stage, which may explain his inattention to the demands of narrative prose.)

A few things REALLY bothered me about the edition of the book I read, although I didn't deduct rating points for them: the book was bound so close to the inner margins that it was often difficult to read the end/beginning of lines; "all right" was consistently misspelled as "alright"; and ellipses, which are frequent in this book, were incorrectly represented as three tight periods (...) instead of ". . .", which any competent editor should catch. I know these points seem niggling, but they did distract me.

All in all, though, McDaniels shows real storytelling talent and a penchant for irreverent humor. He has written a memorable book that deserves to be read. Although I couldn't give this book four stars, it really deserves more than three. I give it three and a half stars.

                              Book Description

Collection of 91 stories from 61 graduates of US Naval Academy from classes of 1934 through 1994 relating personal experiences from their Midshipman days. It is humorous, candid, eye-opening and entertaining. Contributing authors include a former US President, a former head of the CIA, a former Chief of Naval Opertions and a former head of Naval Intelligence, as well as numerous other Academy grads who share the conviction that if these stories are not set down in writing for posterity, they will be lost for all time.

4 out of 5 stars Like a class reunion in print.......2004-10-20

Assemble alumni from any college, and before long the stories will start flowing like wine (or some other adult beverage). This book is like a USNA reunion, with former Mids from the Class of 1931 all the way to the Class of 1994 trading tales and sparking memories. It's particularly interesting to see the same story told from two different perspectives, as happens several times between these covers.

The subtitle declares this "A Ring-Knockers' Bedside [or, as the title page has it, 'Bedtime'] Companion" and that's appropriate on two counts. First, while this is entertaining reading for anyone with an interest in the Naval Academy, its primary audience is definitely USNA grads themselves. There is a helpful glossary of Annapolis argot, but many of the stories will undoubtedly mean more to someone who's been through the Academy. I can think of at least one tale, involving a bowling ball, that while funny will still be largely incomprehensible to anyone unfamiliar with the internal geometry of Bancroft Hall.

The second reason the subtitle fits is that I think this volume works best as a "bedside companion" for quick dipping-into before falling asleep. While I read the volume straight through from end to end, it seems like shorter, more leisurely visits would be more rewarding. In that sense, and given the vast number of alums who apparently didn't submit stories, it's a shame this book isn't two or three times longer than it is.

If I do have a complaint, it's with the organization and arrangement of the stories. The chapters are divided up based on "The Laws of the Navy" Mids memorize during Plebe Summer, but I seldom saw the connection between a given story and its placement in the book. Also, some submissions are quite long and contain many reminiscences, while other contributors have had their stories divided up among several chapters. This results in, for example, Jeff Conklin ('93) making reference to "the same upperclassman who caught my 'Go Army' blunder" nearly 100 pages before the story of that blunder is told. Similarly, Bob Osmon ('60)'s entry on page 248 begins with the cryptic sentence, "The second episode didn't have such dire consequences" -- cryptic, that is, until the reader remembers to flip back to page 142, where Osmon mentions "Two events that happened to my roomie and me," but then only relates the first of the two.

Those complaints aside, it was nice to see both familiar names like Joseph Taussig (a hero of Pearl Harbor who died very recently), James L. Holloway, and Sumner Shapiro (a household name in my home, anyway) as well as many grads not so well known. These are some funny stories, and a look inside the Academy at things most visitors never see and most books never relate.

                              5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2002-04-30

I am a fan of the U.S. Navy and especially the Academy. For anyone who wants a glimpse of what life is like there for the Midshipmen, this book is for you. The stories are funny, some sad. You really get a idea of the dedication it takes to make it through a service academy. In one sense, you are a college student - but really you are on active duty already! My hats off to all Annapolis Alumni!

                              5 out of 5 stars Midshipman Follies.......2001-11-13

_Tales from Annapolis: A Ring-Knockers' Bedside Companion_ (Omega Resources) by Rich Zino ('67) and Paul Laric ('49) is an amiable collection written by former midshipmen about the antics (and some of the antics are more serious than others) of student life at the Naval Academy. The contents will be best enjoyed by former midshipmen, but those who know little about Academy life will get to learn something of what the middies put up with. This is especially true of descriptions of fourth class (freshman) or "Plebe" year, which seem to be disproportionately represented here. My own memory (I am '72) of that year is really rather miserable and not much fun at all. The accounts here are generally upbeat, brightened, I suppose, by many years of chipping away by selective memories. There is a useful glossary which includes some of the tortures upperclassmen used to put us through, like "Shoving out: Positioning one's self in a sitting position without the aid of a chair; also referred to as sitting on infinity." (...)

The most surprising thing about this volume is how similar the tales from fifty years back are to my own memories or to the more recent classes. Mids were always, it seems, crawling down the steam pipe alleys underneath Tecumseh, zipping back just under the wire at curfew, and thinking up get rich quick schemes. The great difference in stories, those with no precedent, are those that involve female midshipmen or officers. Just a hint of sexual scandal is included in these pages.

However, an episode like rolling a bowling ball into the Rotunda through the ranks of the Watch Squad while it was in formation is a unique and classic prank for which a member of the class of '63 takes credit (for a "mystery bowler," of course). This tale was a legend even when I was there, and long may it and the other jolly stories in this book be retold and grow in the telling.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure box of Memories..........2001-05-30

This book is something a little different from what you might ordinarily read. It tells the tales of men who served our country in the Navy, from none other than the very people who lived them. It gives a more personal look at the accademy, and paints a warm picture of what happens "behind the scenes" at the accademy.

I would certainly recomend this book of memories to any other retierd officers or alumni. I can assure you that it will bring a smile to your face, and bring you back to those golden days of Annapolis.

                              Book Description

50 Military Leaders That Changed the World does not celebrate warfare, but rather shines its spotlight on the leaders the author believes have had the greatest impact on world history.

The 50 Military Leaders That Changed the World weren't necessarily the "best" leaders, the most innovative strategists, craftiest tacticians, or even the bravest, smartest, or most admirable people. They were, however, the men and women who, for good or ill, entered the field of battle and left the world much changed upon their exit.

You will easily recognize some of the names — George Washington, Napoleon Bonaparte, Charlemagne, Horatio Nelson, and Ulysses S. Grant, among others. And you may be stumped by those that only a historian could claim to know, like Yi Sun Shin, Tuhril Beg, Chandragupta, and Sargon of Akkad.

Some, like Genghis Khan, were brilliant. Others, like Ivan the Terrible, were mediocre generals, at best. While Joan of Arc is officially a saint, Adolf Hitler is universally considered a monster, Attila the Hun raped, pillaged, and brutally killed thousands, and Mao Zedong killed millions, more than even Hitler.

But each and every of them changed history. You may remember some or most of the men and women in this book. You may honor some, revile others. But after reading 50 Military Leaders That Changed the World, you won't deny that these are the leaders who made the greatest impact on our brief history on this planet.

You may be equally interested in those who were relegated to "honorable mentions" (military leaders who changed the world…but not enough), including Hannibal, William Wallace and Fidel Castro. And those who were omitted from list entirely, including Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, George S. Patton, Dwight D. Eisenhower, George C. Marshall and Douglas MacArthur.

William Weir's book is a very informative and far-reaching book, showcasing the 50 military leaders he believes to be the most influential
                              the world has ever known.

You may wonder why famous military generals and strategists such as Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Richard the Lionhearted, Scipio Africanus, or the Duke of Wellington are not named in this distinguished list. Weir omits them because, although they were more famous, or talented, his book only focuses on people of impact, and, as he compellingly argues, talent and fame don't automatically translate into influence on a global scale.

He offers a fairly decent look at military conquest and strategy, in this most intriguing book, which makes a great companion to two of his other books, 50 Battles That Changed the World, and 50 Weapons that Changed Warfare.

50 Military Leaders is a treasure trove of info. on little known facts about the military greats and the battles they fought, and will greatly broaden your historical perspective about the fascinating world they helped to shape.

5 out of 5 stars Chapters focus on how and why they impacted history so greatly........2007-03-12

You would expect a survey detailing only 50 military leaders worldwide to selectively include only the best: but William Weir's focus is on those who left the world much changed by their decisions, not those who were the best leaders or strategists, necessarily. That's why 50 Military Leaders Who Changed the World is so important not just for military collections but for high school and college-level students of world history: it details both early and modern military leaders who made a strong impact on human history, from Genghis Khan to Yamamoto Isoroku. Chapters focus on how and why they impacted history so greatly.

5 out of 5 stars Those Who Made a Difference in Our World.......2000-02-16

Imagine in your quest for truth a banquet sampling of many wise ones from the beginning of time until today...imagine a one-page synopsis of each person's life, work, and legacy...imagine seeing their faces...and learning and growing from their journeys. That's what can be yours when you take the time to digest 199 lives of the courageous philosophers who took brave stands, focused their incredible personal energies, and managed to change the world one person at a time.

This book should be required reading in every high school and college in our world. Our emerging leaders need to know how our world came to be the way it is and the visionary leaders who shaped it, so they can begin to plant seeds of greatness within themselves. After reading this book, no clear-thinking person can ever, ever believe one person cannot make a difference.

Do avoid the temptation to second-guess Editor von Dehsen in his choices. Of course, some are missing. Booker T. Washington is there and George Washington is not, however, Thomas Jefferson is, but Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt are not.

This is a book for every library in every home where people read.

The volume includes lesser-known, yet important, individuals such as Chin Shih Huang, the emperor who reunified China, and Hatshepsut, queen of ancient Egyptian dynasty. Although Organometallic Chemistry is a subject that is routinely taught in universities, there is a dearth of sources for problems to assign to classes (or for students who want extra practice). Although more than 15 years old, Kegley and Pinhas's book (designed to be used in parallel with Collman & Hegedus, but which can be used independently) is still the standard source of problems. The problems, mostly taken from the literature, are well thought out, and the answers very well written, and thus the book remains a valuable resource for teachers and students.
There are a couple of things of which a prospective buyer should be aware. First, Kegley and Pinhas take a very mechanistic approach, so the ratio of "derive the rate constant" to "what is the structure of the product" questions is more skewed toward the former than is likely to be usual in a typical class in organometallic chemistry. The other, not too surprising given the age of the book, is that it is in some ways out of date: there is, of course, no coverage of topics of recent interest, and probably less emphasis on modern instrumental techniques than would be found in a typical course nowadays.
Even with these provisos, and despite its age, this book is the best of what there is available, and as such, should be on the shelf of anyone who teaches or is studying organometallic chemistry.

For millennia, Lycaon pictus, the wild dog, roamed the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. A highly social scavenger, much like the wolf of the Northern Hemisphere, the wild dog served an essential function in the grasslands ecosystem, culling sick and injured ungulates from once-vast herds. With the advent of large-scale farming and livestock production, however, the wild dog was seen as a threat to progress and was hunted out. Only some 5,000 individuals survive today, making Lycaon pictus Africa's most endangered carnivore. This heavily illustrated look at the life of the wild dog makes a well-reasoned argument for its preservation.

A terrific book for all types of nature-loving readers. If you like pictures, they're here. If you want the best information available about African Wild Dogs and efforts to save them, it's definitely here. All people who are fascinated by wild animals will find this book to be a treasure. The photography is beautiful...It's the next best thing to being there. Leave this book on your coffee table and I guarantee that every guest will pick it up.

These animals truly are in trouble. McNutt does a good job explaining exactly why these dogs are endangered (or should be classified as such).

Like most books published under Smithsonian, this one is a keeper.

Hi, I'm an OAC biology student (that's grade 13 in Ontario) who is doing my ISP on African wild dogs. This is the best book I have ever found on wild dogs and probably the best ever written. I could not believe my luck when I found it. It is an excellent, coffee-table-type book with lots of beautiful pictures that you would like even if you were not specially interested in wild dogs. You will be surprised at how similar the dogs look in the pictures to your own dog.

Are you fascinated by wolves? Do you dream of going on safari in Africa? If you answer yes to either question then this book will be of interest to you.

I had the good luck to see a pack of 10 wild dogs while on safari in Botswana in September of 1998. Being a wolf enthusiast, I was very interested in the similarities and differences between the American grey wolf and the African wild dog. This book was in the library of each safari camp I stayed in so I had the pleasure of studying about the wild dogs while in their native habitat. As you'll learn from this book, wild dogs are extremely social, even more so than grey wolves, and very efficient, successful predators.

The photographs in this book are fantastic and the text is well written, well organized, and aimed at the general public rather than the scientific community.

The author continues his African wild dog research in Botswana. The fate of these fascinating predators is very precarious due to their small population and the relentless persecution by people, similar to that experienced by the grey wolf in America earlier this century.

5 out of 5 stars A well-researched, fascinating look at the African wild dog.......1998-03-29

This is an excellent treatment of the ecology, behavior and endangered status of the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus). For the past several years, the authors have studied African wild dogs in one of their last remaining strongholds, the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

The well-written text and superb photography provide important insight into the natural history and the current plight of African wild dogs. This species has been maligned and persecuted by humans, partly because of unfortunate myths about them. The authors address and dispel these myths, they examine the causes of the drastic decline in African wild dog numbers, and they discuss possible approaches to save this endangered species.
