      Book Description

Regulation of minority faiths varies greatly around the globe, with some countries allowing them considerable freedom to exist, recruit new members, raise money, and use public facilities. Other societies are more closed to the presence of such groups, either native or foreign. The pattern of reactions to minority religious movements is not easily explained by reference to usual terms. Knowledge of historical factors in the various countries, coupled with a use of selected theories from sociology of religion and sociology of law, can assist understanding of the situation in various countries. Explicating these complex relationships is the challenge of this volume.

Regulating Religion: Case Studies from Around the Globe presents, through the inclusion of contributions by international scholars, a global examination of how a number of contemporary societies are regulating religious groups. It focuses on legal efforts to exert social control over such groups, especially through court cases, but also with selected major legislative attempts to regulate them. As such, this analysis falls within the broad area of the sociology of social control and more specifically, legal social control, a topic of great interest when studying how contemporary societies attempt to maintain social order. The factual details about social and legal developments in societies where religion has been defined as problematic include Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas.

This book will be of interest to researchers and students in the sociology of religion, the sociology of law, social policy, and religious studies as well as policy makers.

              Book Description

Organic compounds containing amino groups are at the center of modern organic chemistry, and are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, crop protection, natural product chemistry, and in advanced materials. Modern methods for the introduction of the amino group are therefore of major importance to synthetic chemists and product developers.

Over the last decade, many methods have been developed to generate new C-N bonds. At the same time, the pharmaceutical and chemical industry was rapidly moving away from the development of racemic compounds to the direct synthesis of enantiomerically pure materials. The articles of this book, written by internationally recognized experts, thus focus on asymmetric synthesis.

The most recent catalytic amination methods have particularly revolutionized the chemistry of amino compounds - and you find them all in this first comprehensive overview.

                  Book Description

Surfaces and interfaces play an increasingly important role in today's solid state devices. In this book the reader is introduced, in a didactic manner, to the essential theoretical aspects of the atomic and electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces. The book does not pretend to give a complete overview of contemporary problems and methods. Instead, the authors strive to provide simple but qualitatively useful arguments that apply to a wide variety of cases. The emphasis of the book is on semiconductor surfaces and interfaces but it also includes a thorough treatment of transition metals, a general discussion of phonon dispersion curves, and examples of large computational calculations. The exercises accompanying every chapter will be of great benefit to the student.

The hardcover of "Step Ball Change" aged on my nightstand for several years before I finally got to spend time with Jeanne Ray's very interesting characters. The premise of two competitive sisters who love to dance and come together in a period of great personal change with divorce and children's marriages keeps you turning the pages. Caroline, through whose eyes we experience the story, has an edge, a no-nonsense woman who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. When picture-perfect sister Taffy comes after a breakup with husband Neddy, the action kicks into full gear. Taffy's dog Stamp is wonderfully portrayed, the kind of dog whose yap is as big as his bite. The animal personality is delightfully portrayed, jumping high off the floor for liverwurst. Daughter Kay is torn between marrying the wealthy Trey or the romantically inept D.A. Jack. This is compounded by son George who is an excellent dancer & falls in love with the carpenter's daughter Erica. Two interracial couples find each other with a minimum of fuss. Caroline's husband Tom & Taffy's daughter Holden are excellent supporting characters. Ray uses the analogy of a house whose foundation is buckling to reflect the state of the family. By the end, couples find each other, the house is repaired & expanded, smiles are passed around as the sisters tap dance into the sunrise with "Putting on the Ritz." This is a sweet domestic tale that kept my attention and leaves the reader with a smile on the face. Enjoy!

                  2 out of 5 stars Pretty Boring.......2007-04-28

I was looking forward to this book, unfortunately, I was disappointed. 1 dimensional characters and a forced plot made this not a very enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars real life characters.......2007-04-16

I love every book Jeanne Ray writes...I love that she centers her stories around middle aged, "normal" people who are just trying to lead a decent life and things get crazy all around them...it is so realistic in the most positive ways. I love that situations are worked through with love and good intentions, no matter how crazy things get...that is so spot-on for how I try to deal with life that it gives me hope it can actually be done. I love this book! You can't go wrong with any of her books, but this and "Eat Cake" are my very favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully charming and humorous.......2006-09-02

If you're ever down, buy this book and keep it on hand. It's sure to lift your spirits!!! You may even start tap dancing!
Likable and believable characters, good story line told with great charm and humor (not the cynical brand of humor that is so often found in today's writing)--just charmingly funny. When this book came to the end, I thought how much I'd love to see it made into a movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining story of family life.......2005-12-04

I read this book because Ray's first book, Julie and Romeo, had been so good I decided to follow up on her progress. She is just as good in Step-Ball-Change. The story starts off very unassuming with our two main characters having supper when the phone rings. From there on it is one family catastrophe after another. The story is funny and the main characters are interesting and true to life. The secondary characters are also realistic. Actually, one of the best characters in the book is a white terrier who is nervous and energetic and never bites anyone until...well, you'll see.

Step-Ball-Change is a very funny story of family life. The story encompasses the lives of both young and old characters and their happiness, trials, and tribulations and how each member of the family relates to one another in the context of those trying times.

Step-Ball-Change is a funny and entertaining story and I recommend it highly.

Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles, this is a thorough, astonishing expose of the "Black Budget"--a 36-billion-dollar cache used by the Pentagon to fund its own agenda of top-secret weapons and wars.

5 out of 5 stars Spend-Thrift Intelligence Reduces National Security.......2003-06-16

I know the author personally, from his time as the New York Times investigative journalist responsible for covering the US national and military intelligence programs, and I consider him one of the most balanced, thoughtful, and well-intentioned reporters in the intelligence field.

His book remains very, very important because the Pentagon is in the process of reconstituting the "Yellow Fruit" organization, with the same blank check black budget, and the same mind-sets that previously led to enormous ineffectiveness, waste, and some outright corruption and theft of government funds. Known as Gray Fox, this new incarnation of Yellow Fruit has Richard Secord, one of the leaders or the Iran-Contra scandal for which several top personalities were indicted and some convicted, as a primary player.

Tim Weiner's book is important, it is relevant, and it should be read by those responsible for the oversight of military intelligence budgets and capabilities--and by citizens who might wish to question their elected representatives on this important topic.

5 out of 5 stars Blank Check or American Govt ripoff........2001-07-07

I admit, I read the book about 2 years ago, but, I will remember the hard cold facts. The American public is so misinformed about how the miltary is spending our money. It is very disturbing to find out what I thought was true. Blank Check, opened my eyes a lot wider. Did you ever really think the government was honest with us and congress? Don't believe it.

4 out of 5 stars Money talks! And does it have a story to tell!.......2000-03-26

Blank Check is a meticulously researched and chilling account of how the Cold War led the nation into a frenzy of spending based on fear and propaganda. The book spans 40 years of government development and National crises from the viewpoint of a checkbook. However, the fact that the book was published before the fall of the Soviet Union means that, to a modern reader, the stories told are a frightening look at times gone by rather than a relevant commentary on modern life. Also, with no central character to latch onto the book, while conscience stirring, is not necessarily compelling. That said, revelations in this book about the government's outright violation of the constitution in the name of National Security still have the ability to leave a reader appalled.

7 maps & 22 illustrations & 6 x 9 & Previously unpublished letters and diaries of a Napoleonic officer & Detailed accounts of the 1812 and 1814 campaigns & A unique combat history of the Bavarian Army The letters and campaign diaries of Lieutenant Franz Hausmann are a unique primary source for the daily life and duties of an officer in the Napoleonic Wars. Written for his father, himself a former infantry officer in the Bavarian forces, they constitute a remarkable soldier's-eye view of military life. Hausmann saw action in the wars against Austria (1805), Prussia (1806), and Russia (1807). He also took part in the ill-fated invasion of Russia in 1812, marching in the ranks of the doomed Bavarian corps. He survived to describe the 1813 and 1814 campaigns, when the Bavarians switched sides and fought against Napoleon. His writing has considerable impact and immediacy, unclouded by hindsight, and is here placed in the context of military events by John Gill. John H. Gill is the author of With Eagles to Glory, a study of Napoleon's German allies in the 1809 campaign. Cynthia Hausmann is the great-great grandaughter of Franz Hausmann.

Worth reading if you are eager to learn of accounts from various sorts of the Great Army's soldiers: this book provides interesting inputs and backgrounds on the bavarian army that sided Napoleon during many years against Austria. However, the reading may be difficult for the vast public to whom I recommend to start reading the memoirs of soldiers Bourgogne, Coignet, Tirion, etc. who demonstrated great narrative skills compared to this book which is more a diary.
