The Gold Standard on the Subject.......2004-03-15

This casebook by Professors Coffee and Seligman is the gold standard for the teaching of federal securities law. It is the successor to the casebook originally by Richard Jennings and Harold Marsh, both now deceased, which was used to teach the subject to the majority of securities lawyers now in practice. It includes a careful selection of materials revealing the progression of ideas in the field in most of the subjects of importance to students receiving an introduction to the law in this area. The cases are well selected, and serve as a compendium of the meat of the matter in all the important cases in the field that are cited in briefs filed in all types of litigation in this area and which guide the transactional lawyers through the thickets. I used this text in my original law school coursework, and found it in use later as I pursued an LL.M. degree in the area at NYU. As the field has undergone some major upheaval due to the scandals involving Enron, Global Crossing and the like, it is appropriate that Coffee and Seligman be listed as sole authors on the cover, although one can still see some of the flavor of the original work by Jennings and Marsh. It is a classic.

Working on a USAID funded Pastoralist Livelihood project, this book was of great help. In an area of the world where it is difficult to get accurate, timely information this book fills a big gap.

The book is presented as Joe's Criminal Justice term paper, but without footnotes as Joe has come to realize that typing footnotes is a drag. (The action takes place prior to Joe's learning MS Word, a computer program that college students have found compiles footnotes with ease out of material you needn't even have read.)

Joe's detecting efforts are triumphant, but because of the surprising involvement of a family member, Joe is unable to reveal the culprit and accept appropriate credit for solving the crimes.

Joe finally acquires his own car and names it "The Yellow Peril" at the suggestion of fellow student Amelia Earhart Wong. Joe has been ordered by his mother to marry heiress Claire Preene, but Joe's passionate admirer Patella Sackworth may yet have something to say about that.

Pretty good book about a pretty dumb kid.......2001-05-03

In comparison with Finding Dad, John-Browne's Body, One Brick Shy, Spring Break, A Little Honesty, and Thing with Feathers, I rated Focusing the Private Eye four stars instead of the five some others have granted it. My mother, on the other hand, thought this one was worth five stars chiefly because of the poetry.

The T-54 and T-55 tanks are the most widely manufactured tanks of all time. They have become ubiquitous to wars around the globe since the 1950s, starting with Hungary in 1956, and including the the Arab-Israeli wars of 1967, 1973 and 1982, the Vietnam war of 1967-75, the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88, the Afghanistan conflict, Operation Desert Storm, the Yugoslav Civil Wars, and the recent conflict in Iraq. This book will examine the roots of this prolific tank family, starting with the Soviet Army’s first attempts to replace the legendary T-34 during World War II, and covering the T-43 and the T-44, the more successful T-54, and its ultimate evolution into the T-55.

Excellent and informative book on an important Soviet AFV.......2004-12-03

Steven Zaloga is one of my favorite authors on tanks and AFVs. This volume does not disappoint. The T54/55 tank is one of the most numerous and successful Soviet tanks ever developed. Over 40,000 of these tanks are used all over the world. Zaloga does a great job of describing the development of the T54 and T55 tanks and the variant models. He also includes various sections which explain the upgrade versions of the T55, the Chinese copies of the T54 (called the T-59 and T-69), and the combat performance of the T54/55. What I always appreciate about Zaloga is that he inserts helpful information such as the armor penetration of the 100mm D-10T guns (e.g. compare the HVAP round which penetrates 200mm with the latest UBM6 APSDS round which can penetrate up to 290 mm at 2km against a vertical target)and the armor upgrades of the T55. As always in this series, the colored plates and illustrations are excellent. Zaloga packs in so much information in 47 pages! Highly recommended!!
