The market has changed dramatically since 1998, when this was published. This is particularly true regarding the material on portfolio management strategies and most true re the various forms of credit, and credit-related derivatives, most of which did not exist in 1998.

A solid overview.......2001-12-07

As I find with all of the Fabozzi books, this is a very comprehensive overview of a complex subject. Fabozzi has gathered together an impressive list of experts who each write on what they know best. I found the chapter on Latin American loans to be particularly useful.

Excellent book!.......2006-06-01

Although it can't nor should substitute for a competent RE lawyer, this does answer FAQs about RE transactions. It delivers what it promised to do, namely, answer FAQs about various aspects of the process. Initially, I hesitated about investing my time reading it but since it was co-authored by Mr. Irwin, whose many books I have read and liked, I quicky found it worthwhile.

Here's my tip on selecting the books that would find a place in my library: I would first borrow the book from my public library, read it, and then decide.

Any student of early Spanish history or Aztec history must take a look at AZTECS & CONQUISTADORES: THE SPANISH INVASION & THE COLLAPSE OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE, which surveys the impact the Spanish conquests had on world history. The focus here is upon the military might of Cortes, the training and experience of men on both sides of the conflict, and the major battles that subdued the Aztecs. Color maps, illustrations and charts throughout enhance the survey and provide exact explanations and insights suitable for both high school and college level history students.

Excellent visual insight.......2007-01-04

Well written with excellent pictorial information. And one who has done any kind of research into this period of history and was curious about how things actually looked would be very interested in seeing good detailed and written descriptions of maps, battle suits, weaponry and other items of the period. A good overview of the events during this period in Mexico's history, but the book is more valuable as a visual insight. Would highly recommend this as an ideal companion book to read with a more detailed historical book of this period in history, such as Bernal Diaz del Castillo's book of the conquest or William H. Prescott's wonderfully written History of the Conquest of Mexico.

This book really helped flesh out Bernal Diaz's account of the fall of the 'Aztec' Empire for me. The first part of the text concerns the gear of the Conquistadores themselves, with the following catagories being the Aztecs/Mexica, the Inca, and the Maya, the three major enemies the Spaniards found in the New World. The plates are awesome, depicting, among others, noble Incan warriors, a freaky-looking Maya spearman, and a plain nasty Aztec priest with the heart of his most recent victim.

Valuable information, not to be taken by letter.......2007-03-10

A considerable part of this book talks about the Aztec, Maya and Inca. While it has got really valuable information, not all assertions should be taken to letter. The European vision of Native americans is still predominant in most works, and it is still polluted with myths and false assumptions about facts and ideology of these peoples.

It is a great introductory book, thanks to the Conquistadores (which are familiar to us), and it has beautiful and quite accurate drawings. However, if Aztec and Maya history is what catches your interest, and you are willing to dig deeper, I HUGELY recommend looking for some Mexican authors, who have a different take on the subject: what Mesoamerican peoples thought, and what their traditions really were, not through the conquerors' eyes. Pablo Moctezuma Barragan, Miguel de Leon-Portilla and Ignacio Romerovargas are good examples. Be warned however, that these authors may display too much nationalism. All in all, when reading ANYTHING about Prehispanic American civilizations, it is recommended to be critical and apply your own criteria.

I recommend this book to anyone who is eager to learn something about what the Conquest of the most powerful nations in America was like.

Conquistadores, the last knights.......2001-11-19

This book is one of osprey finest, its a pity that the section of the conquistadores is so small, but it contains a lot of good information. And it is always cool to read about 400 men with armour and swords who conquer a whole nation. I Love the helmets.
P.S. Osprey is publishing a new book about the conquistadores.

Military history of forgotten peoples.......1999-09-09

The title of this book is misleading: it is not only the story of Cortez and Pizzaro, but also of their opponents, the Aztecs, the Incas, and the Mayas. The book clearly explains where the military advantages of the Spaniards lay (it wasn't gunpowder as you might think!) and also describes the strengths and weaknesses of the cultures they subdued, sometimes with relative ease and sometimes with great difficulty. You will come away with new respect for all the combatants.

I had the privilege and honor to be one of Professor Luis Martín's pupils at SMU a decade and a half ago. I recall his playful, excitable and gregarious personality, as well as his trademark lectures in which he typically juggled history, theology, poetry, sociology and hard-core Sevillian gossip!

Such is the trademark of his writing in "Daughters of the Conquistadores." Don Luis artfully stretches the imagination of the reader by plotting in occurences and tribulations of nuns, divorcees, concubines, "tapadas" and "beatas" in the colonial Peru of 1550-1800. In a most authentic and self-bred style, he narrates the mysteries and abuses taking place in convents and nunneries, haciendas and palaces; and underlines the influence of women in a society relentlessly dominated by "Don Juanism" and sternly regulated and probed by an over-zealous Catholic church.

Excellent History of a Pathetic War.......2006-01-07

"Pathetic" is a very apt description of the origins and subsequent conduct of this war between Spain on one hand and Peru and Chile on the other. However, to both Latin American nations it invoked great passion and nationalism, while in Spain it absurdly renewed dreams of the ardent revanchists in the decaying monarchy. Pride more than anything else seemed to be the Spanish motivation for this footnote war. Well written with an eye for the interesting anecdote. I recommend this to fans of Hispano-colonial history and international relations.

An introduction to six of the Spanish Conquistadores.......2004-06-25

R. Conrad Stein has written enough books for the various series published by The Child's World press that he not only know the formula, but how to exploit it to his advantage. Like all of those other volumes, "The Conquistadores: Building a Spanish Empire in the Americas" is required to have four chapters, but Stein is allowed to have detailed sidebars in each chapter and he really takes advantage of that in this book.

The first chapter on Spain and the Conquistadores explains how fighting for several centuries to free their land from Moorish rule created a warrior class in Spain that took advantage of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus to take armies across the sea to serve God and the monarch (and also to get rich). The other three chapters are devoted to the three most famous conquistadores, namely Hernando Cortes and the Conquest of Mexico, Francisco Pizarro and the Conquest of the Incas, and Francisco de Coronado, Explorer of the American Southwest. But then Stein also devotes sizeable sidebars to Vasco de Balboa, Discoverer of the Pacific, Cabeza de Vaca, the Compassionate Conquistador, and Hernando de Soto, Explorer of the Mississippi. The Time Line in the back of the book shows who was doing what when and where to help put each conquistador in perspective. The result is a nice introduction to a half dozen of the key conquistadors who helped to establish a Spanish presence in the New World on a level that is at least comparable to what you would expect to find in the early chapters of a standard grade school American history textbook.

The book is illustrated with historic prints and paintings (the cover is a detail of Spanish soliders taken from Juan O'Gorman's "Historical Mural). The first eight volumes in this series, "A Proud Heritage: The Hispanic Library," were published last year and "The Conquistadores is one this year's eight new volumes. The others are devoted to "Christopher Columbus: Opening the Americas to European Exploration," "Emiliano Zapata: Revolutionary and Champion of Poor Farmers," "Frida Kahlo: An Artist Celebrates Life," "Hernando Cortés: Conquistador and Empire Builder," "Mario Molina: Chemist and Nobel Prize Winner," and "Pancho Villa: Mexican Revolutionary Hero," as well as a volume on "The Changing Face of America: Hispanic Roots, Hispanic Pride" (the first set had a volume on Coronado). Given that Hispanics are now the second largest ethnic group in the country the value of a series like this is better than ever.
