Are witchcraft accusations a scapegoating of the powerless by the elite to maintain their ascendancy, as materialist class theorists argue, or are they social expressions of psychological tensions arising from conflicts in relationships, as functionalist psychological anthropologists have argued? Understanding culture means understanding and appreciating the diverse theories that offer different perspectives on culture. Salzman's text explores six major streams of anthropological theory: interdependence in human life (functionalism); agency in human action (processualism and transactionalism); determining factors (materialism and political economy); coherence in culture (configurationalism and structuralism); transformation through time (history and evolution); and critical advocacy (feminism and postmodernism). Each theoretical approach is initially presented in its own terms, to show its assumptions, aims, and accomplishments. Each approach is elucidated and illustrated through the arguments and ethnographic examples offered by original theorists and astute practitioners. The introductory and concluding chapters of Understanding Culture frame the diverse theoretical positions and the debates among them within the broader philosophical opposition between explanation and explication. A caution is offered about "presentism," the reflex acceptance of currently popular theories and easy dismissal of earlier theories, because an informed appreciation of a wide range of theoretical approaches is beneficial for understanding cultures. This little book is a gem. For years, Kaplan and Manners' CULTURE THEORY was my guide for a quick, unbiased overview of anthropological theory. K&M, while still useful, sorely needs an update. Waveland Press (which also published CULTURE THEORY), scores again with Salzman's UNDERSTANDING CULTURE. There's a lot to like about this book.

Salzman offers a fresh and eminently readable commentary on the full breadth of anthropological theory, including the most current theorists. Students and professors alike will find the author's discussion of the different ways that "theory" can be conceptualized helpful. The glossary of terms and brief biographies of anthropologists add a nice touch, too.

This book is a "must have" for both the casual and academic reader.

a Survey for All Anthropologists.......2001-11-07

Philip Salzman provides a lively and accessible survey of current anthropological theory, which will be useful to students and practising social scientists alike who wish to update their knowledge of the current, controversial state of anthropological theory. Salzman's final chapter catches the state of debate more successfully than any other work I know and brings this concise but highly informative survey to a wise and sensible conclusion, as might be expected of the author of Black Tents of Baluchistan. The book's succinctness and attractive style render it highly accessible to a wide readership.

The book deals with the propagation and absorption of high frequency waves in plasmas (hot, fully ionized gases). Research in this field is very active in controlled fusion research, i.e. the quest for energy from nuclear reactions similar to those going on within the sun, and in astrophysics, i.e. the study of space plasmas in the earth ionosphere, stars, and galaxies. The text collects in a structured and self-contained way the basic knowledge on the broad and varied behaviour of plasma waves, adopting the microscopic kinetic description of the plasma as unifying principle. The internal coherence of the theory is explicity stressed, and very interesting physical phenomena peculiar to plasmas, such as collisionless damping of waves, the development of stochasticity in the interactions of charged particles with electromagnetic waves, and nonlinear interactions between waves, are discussed in detail. The most common and useful approximations used in solving practical problems are derived as special cases from the more general kinetic approach, thereby clarifying their meaning and domain of applicability. This exposition should be useful to plasma physicists both as an introduction and a reference to this field of research. Because of its multi-disciplinary aspects it might also be of interest to people specializing in kinetic theory, classical electromagnetism, or classical mechanics, as a nontrivial example of application of the methods of these fields to the unconventional plasma medium.

This title looks at the life and experiences of the average Fallschirmjäger, and includes first-hand accounts from different theatres and periods of the war.

Good but not great........2004-06-04

Another interesting book from Osprey, this one suffers from a few annoying flaws. The author starts the book with a several page digression into the political and social situation in German at the time of the Second World War. Interresting perhaps, but it has nothing to do with the subject of the book, and it wastes too many of the already limited number of pages.

Then, when he finally gets to the actual subject matter, the author attempts to use a poorly executed and inconsistently implemented first-person narrative to describe the training undergone by German Paratroopers. As usual the best part of any Osprey book is the illustrations, but ever here they are not quite up to the standards of most of the other titles in this series.

Overall, while the title does provide some useful information on the subject, there are better books available.

Death from Above.......2002-01-10

Another Great title for the fans of the German Airborne Troops or best know by their german name Fallschirmjager, this book from the serie Warrior publish by Osprey try to introduce us to the everyday life of one Jager from the trainning camps to the last great battles for a lost cause in the battlefields of the European and North African fronts, if you would like to begin to study this elite force this book would really help you but if you already know something or have read others book you would find nothing new only the great plates from the Illustrator Velimir Vuksic(7 Col) and some rare photographs(50).

A nice Chronology and Introduction make this book unique for me, this was a nice part of it,also the first accounts with the study Belief and belonging are very fascinated, I recomended this book but as a small intro to this great Elite Force. Other great books related with this one also from Bruce Quarrie are "German Airborne Troops 1939-45" and "7thFlieger Division Students Fallschirmjager Elite" which would help understand life and experiences of the average trooper.

From other Authors,"Hitler's Sky Warriors German Paratroopers in Action 1939-1945" by Christopher Ailsby is a great illustrated edition. "Weapons & Equipment of the German Fallschirmtruppe" by Alex Buchner,"Green Devils, German Paratroopers 1939-1945" by Jean-Yves Nasse and a new title "Fallschirmjager In Action 1939-1945" by Willi Zahn,a great account is "Heaven and Hell: War Diary of a German Paratrooper" by Martin Poppel, for the famous battle of Crete(the last jump for many Fallschirmjager) are two nice books that I recommend, one by Jean-Yves Nasse "Fallschirmjagers in Crete"(fully illustrated with many Photos and Maps)and the other is "Crete:The Battle and the Resistance" by Antony Beevor

Weart's Nuclear Fear offers a history of nuclear energy viewed through the lens of popular mythology, discussing how images, fears, and fantasies as old as humanity have shaped both public and expert perceptions of the atomic age. The history of nuclear energy is charged with strongly-held convictions and value-laden analyses. Amid this conflagration, it's reassuring to find an account that not only approaches the issue from a unique and fascinating perspective, but does so in an even-handed way. Weart delivers on both these counts, staying the course of reasoned analyses, dispassionate as can be demanded of any account which must necessarily dive elbow deep into the discussion of subjective human values.

I have a specific fascination with representations of nuclear technology in popular culture. In that capacity this book is everything I could have hoped for in a secondary source. Nuclear history has precious few scholarly discussions of the avenues by which such a powerful psychological image is manifested in a wider cultural context, and as a definitive account, one could ask for no better than Weart's.

This book's only shortcoming is one for which the author can't be blamed: the publication date. The end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union add yet another dimension to the discussion. Nuclear fear is alive and well today; and it has no doubt taken some interesting twists and turns since the late 80s.

This is a must-read for any student of nuclear energy or weaponry, if only because if offers such a fresh perspective. The histories of the subject's political and scientific components are well-explored, but Weart makes a compelling case that these avenues are by no means exhaustive.

Brilliant. Original. Very scarry. A must........1996-02-05

If you are like me, you have a pile of books that you keep meaning to get around to, and, due to time constraints, rarely do. This book is the exception-read it now. It is quite possibly one of the most original books of this past quarter century. Weart is the first historian I know of who directs his attention to the pervasiveness of nuclear imagery in our lives. If you ever did the 'under your desks dears, an atom bomb might be coming' drill in grade school. you need to read this. If you have kids, you must read this. Not an easy book, but all the more rewarding. Very powerful stuff, indeed.

The modern nation of Turkey was set up as a secular state. The role and presence of Islam within a Turkish secular democracy is a critical consideration with respect to Turkey's relationship with Europe. In Islam And Society In Turkey, social anthropologist David Shankland argues persuasively that there is a fine balance between the diverse groups that accepted Ataturk's secularism) and those who think that the state has not gone farm enough. Shankland shows that the way Turkey is incorporated into European and international institutions has a profound influence on the way that Turkey's internal ideological, church/state conflicts have developed. Highly recommended reading for students of Turkish history and culture, international relations, and church/state political science, Islam And Society In Turkey is a masterpiece of original scholarship, providing key insights into the role of Islam in modern Turkish society and politics.
