Careers in Accounting explores specific professions within the accounting field and helps you determine which job suits you best .
The author provides a sound process while thoroughly covering terms and conditions, policies and procedures, and compliance considerations. He leads you through the entire RFP life cycle that assures due diligence and obtaining best value for your organization. The book is filled with tips and checklists that will make the development and implementation of a repeatable RFP process easier than starting from scratch. The included reference materials are drawn from state governments, which will be invaluable to anyone working in public sector contracting at the state level.
If you are completely new to writing RFPs, or work in the private sector, I recommend Request for Proposal: A Guide to Effective RFP Development (ASIN 0201775751); however, this book will still be an invaluable resource after you learn the basics. If you are in the target audience I cited above this book will be of immediate value.

A brilliant and comprehensive exposure of the fascinating field of Astrobiology........2006-07-11
Not only is Lunine a brilliant astrobiologist but his book, represents and absolutely fantastic read. For a well educated general audience as well as for the already initiated astrobiologist, Lunine offers a brilliant and comprehensive exposure of the most current ideas in the fascinating field of Astrobiology. I highly recommend it. Ihrenes 2006.
Brilliant but demanding overview of a new field.......2006-01-04
This astrobiology textbook is brilliant but demanding -- not everyone, even science fans, wants to know this much about life in the universe! Lunine describes his book as "a comprehensive treatment of astrobiology for upper level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students". The book is also targeted at senior scientists who want an introduction to this new discipline. The resulting volume of 586 densely packed pages is a tour de force of basic physics and chemistry as well as biology and planetary science. The first half the book leads the reader through the fundamentals of physics, biochemistry, and microbiology essential to understanding the origin of life. The second half covers life on Earth, the habitability of Mars, Europa and Titan, other planetary systems, the co-evolution of life and its host planet, and the evolution of intelligence. The mostly monochrome illustrations are well selected, but printing quality occasionally lapses -- the only reason I rate this book four stars and not five.
Best astrobiology textbook on the market now.......2004-12-01
Astrobiology is a relatively new science. Not completely new: I've been reading astrobiology books since the 1960s. But only recently have some fairly decent astrobiology textbooks been written that picture a core of topics needed to cover the subject. These include the definition, nature, and origin of life; the development of life on Earth, the mass extinctions on Earth; possibilities of life elsewhere in the planetary system, possibilities for life to survive in outer space; changes to the Earth's environment brought about by life; the nature and evolution of consciousness and intelligent life; detection of extrasolar planets; and signatures of extraterrestrial life. They also include some astronomy: formation of galaxies, habitable galaxies and habitable portions of galaxies, formation of stars and planets in these galaxies, migration of planets, statistics on deadly collisions of big objects with potentially life-bearing planets, and the significance of risks to life such as supernovae and gamma ray bursters.
So far, no book is ideal in covering all these topics for upper division college students. But I think this one comes closest.
Since this book might be read by those who know plenty of astronomy but not much biology, or by those who know biology but not astronomy, the book begins with some needed background: fundamentals of physics, physical chemistry, and biochemistry. It then gets into the question of how the elements we're made of were synthesized in the first place. And it shows that our Universe is fairly well suited for life, even if not completely ideal.
Then we get into an important topic, the thermodynamic foundations of life. The book makes the point that one always has to be aware of the energetics of life: life needs energy, so where does that energy come from? In addition, life requires a low entropy state. Such states are not all that hard to come by, but one must know how one is achieved. And life implies a high information content. Again, one must know how to measure that content and decide where it has come from. The author makes the point that given sufficient free energy, systems not in equilibrium will exhibit self-organizing and self-complexifying properties. I found this fascinating. It was almost as though the Purpose of Life were to reduce carbon dioxide, and life were merely a side-effect of catalyzing this reaction.
Next there is a fascinating discussion of how life might have evolved. Did we start with replicators, cell boundaries, substrates, or proteins, or a little of all of them? Was there an "RNA world" before the "DNA world?" And a "TNA" or "PNA" (peptide nucleic acid) world before that? Can we have autocatalysis without replication?
After that comes a discussion of extreme environments, given that life's last common ancestor may well have been an extremophile. And then we learn about the faint early Sun, a carbon dioxide greenhouse effect on Earth, the rise of oxygen in the atmosphere, and a possible "snowball Earth." We read about possibilities of life elsewhere in our planetary system: Europa, Titan, and Mars. And we find out about techniques for discovering extraterrestrial signatures of life. There's a very good and up-to-date section on extrasolar planets.
The textbook ends with a little material on the nature of self-awareness and on future prospects for the human species and civilization. I think it is an excellent text.

Confusing.......2005-03-21
This is not a very good textbook and should not be considered if you desire to learn chemistry. The text is not understandable even though I have a masters in chemistry from CalTech.
The organization is not well structured and it's hard to believe that people actually like this book. The writers of this book try to "cram" as much information as possible in each chapter which is NOT necessary. It could be sucessfuly done if they spread out the information and concepts.
HOWEVER, he book problems are excellent. I'll give them that.
Excellent overview of first year chemistry.......2003-06-01
This book is very well written, with helpful diagrams and detailed examples. It is easy to understand and text and with this book it is truly not hard to understand chemistry and do well. I easily got an A in Chemistry I and I believe that everyone who failed the class simply didn't look over the book or their notes after class. It certainly wasn't the fault of the professor or the text- both explained chemistry very well.
From D to B+.......2003-04-10
I had difficulties solving chemistry problems I also bought many books but when I found this one in My local library I was extremely happy with the simplicity of the text problem examples
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK FOR CHEMISTRY CLASS EVER ....I HAD A D IN MY FIRST CHEMISTRY CLASS NOW I AM GETTING As AND Bs Every household should have one .... The best book by far
Chemistry - A Study in Life.......2000-12-05
This book is a leader in the chemistry field, superior to any I've seen. Its explanations are thorough, yet concise. If you are a student, and you have any doubts about the effectiveness of this book, expel them from your mind. This is a book for autonomous thinkers, as it gives you a strong footing in intermediate Chemistry, allowing you to think for yourself. The media companion is also helpful. It brings the book to life, helping those students who work best with visual stimulus. Perhaps you do not have a computer in your home, but take the time to use this tool at your school. As for the teachers, you may have my assurance that my time spent as a student using this book was made more complete only by my professor's lectures. Please consider this book a valuable addition to your Chemistry library.
Excellent Book!.......2000-11-20
This book was more helpful for me than my professors' lectures! It is very helpful for all general chem students, including those who hate chemistry (I do not).

American Nightingale: The Story of Frances Slanger, Forgotten Heroine of Normandy
ASIN: 0813121485 |
Book Description
Before December 1941 drew to a close, five navy nurses on Guam became the first American military women of WWII to be taken prisoner by the Japanese. More than seventy army nurses survived five months of combat conditions in the jungles of Bataan and Corregidor before being captured, only to endure more than three years in prison camps. In all, nearly one hundred nurses became POWs.
Many of these army nurses were considered too vital to the war effort to be evacuated from the Philippines. Though receiving only half the salary of male officers of the same rank, they helped establish outdoor hospitals and treated thousands of casualties despite rapidly decreasing supplies and rations. After their capture, they continued to care for the sick and wounded throughout their internment in the prison camps.
When freedom came, the U.S. military ordered the nurses to sign agreements with the government not to discuss their horrific experiences. Evelyn Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have conducted interviews with survivors and scoured archives for letters, diaries, and journals to uncover the heroism and sacrifices of these brave women. Their dedication to accuracy, combined with their personal expertise in medical care and military culture and discipline, has resulted in a honest, fair history of the dedicated military nurses who were captured in the Pacific theater during WWII.
Like their male counterparts, these nurses faced the reality of combat, anguish of surrender, and the brutality of captivity. Their story is one chapter in the annals of World War II that must be told, if American men and women are to appreciate the depth of sacrifices made by their countrymen and women in the cause of freedom.Rear Admiral Frances Shea Buckley, Nurse Corps, U.S. Navy (Ret.)
Goes far toward telling their story in a way most readers can grasp, sensing the heroism as well as the horrors of some of the most desperate years our Republic has ever faced.Frank F. Mathias
As well as ably telling the story of what women can tolerate in the service of their country, the authors give a stirring account of the fighting that took place on Bataan and Corregidor at that time.American History
Adds a tremendous chapter to the narrative of women prisoners in wartime by following a cast of characters almost cinematically through their daily routines and their reflections recorded in letters, diaries, and interviews.Rain Taxi
Customer Reviews:
All This Hell: U.S. Nurses Imprisoned by the Japanese .......2007-10-12
This is a good history of the nurses imprisoned at the start of World War II. I purchased this book and "We Band of Angels" at the same time They are both good books but tell almost the same story.
For Anyone Interested in Women in World War II.......2006-11-10
This is an intensely riveting book. The stories and flow make it seem like you are with the nurses. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in World War II, Nurses' tales or just a really great book to read!
Fascinating but flawed history.......2001-01-19
I ordered this book for the story of the Guam nurses. I found it a very important addition to the history of military women, WWII in the Pacific and POWs. But I also found some basic factual errors in the part of the story I know something about; the invasion of Guam. Read this fascinating book for the personal stories and details of war/POW experiences, but check the military/historical details in other books. The writing is somewhat difficult to wade through and the appendices confused me. The titles of the tables imply that they cover all the women POWs written about, but (except for the listing of Guam nurses) they do not appear to include the Guam POWs. I finally decided that the one listing ages shows their age at release. (Some were surprisingly old - in their 50s, few in their 20s.) In all a very interesting topic that deserves wider recognition.
There is hell and then there is hell.......2000-11-07
While it is horrible how our nurses were treated as POWs, by this account they lived in relative safety and comfort compared to their male counterparts where many were killed for sport, used for medical experiments, etc. While the facts are shocking, they reinforce the story given me by a Swiss friend who was also interred by the Japanese in the Philippines. I found the book difficult to read not due to content but rather due to writing style.
I thought I knew..........2000-06-10
I thought I knew about Bataan and Corregidor before I read ALL THIS HELL. I thought I knew what it meant to be civilized. I thought I knew the meaning of the words depravity and atrocity. I thought I knew the meaning of the words courage, bravery and heroism. I thought I knew the meaning of the word, Hell. But there is the Hell you see, the Hell you may be able to escape and the Hell that has to be survived. This book should be mandatory reading for all human beings who consider themselves civilized as well all Americans who appreciate our freedom. If you do not appreciate freedom now, you certainly will after reading ALL THIS HELL. After reading this book, when I hear the word, "Veterans", I will always think of women as well as men.

Book Description
This volume traces the social history of African American men from the days of slavery to the present, focusing on their achievements, their changing image, and their role in American society. The author places the contemporary issue of Black men's disproportionate involvement with criminal justice within its social and historical context, while analyzing the most significant movements aiming to improve the status of Blacks in our society. The book's main thesis is that an ever-changing, yet ever-present, process of criminalization has entrapped Black men throughout history, thus creating a major barrier to their collective development. The topics discussed include the role of Blacks in the Civil War, Booker T. Washington, the Civil Rights movement, and the Million Man March.

New Perspective on American History.......2001-10-12
This is an excellent book that presents American history from the perspective of Black men. The author reviews major historical events and examines their impact on the African American male population. The book covers social history and looks at the political economy of the Black male population, and offers new insights in the fields of American history, Black studies and gender studies. Must reading for the serious scholar but also for the person interested in learning more about African American history.
Book Description
Science Education as/for Sociopolitical Action is about alternative ways of looking at science education. Rather than focusing on the transfer or construction of knowledge, the authors focus on the role of science education as a starting point for engaging students in social action. Sometimes, social action is the starting point and students learn science and about science as they pursue their goals. The authors provide concrete descriptions for curriculum design, or how an alternative curriculum design has worked in practice. This book shows that science education can be radically different from current practice without losing its appeal.
