Book Description
Computer Accounting with QuickBooks 2006 teaches students how to use the QuickBooks 2006 version computer accounting software. The first part of the text provides a hands-on introduction to QuickBooks, and the second half focuses on maintaining a service and merchandising business, as well as on advanced features of QuickBooks. This book provides hands-on, step-by-step instructions for easy learning with an abundance of exercises and projects to reinforce new concepts. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter as the student progresses from entering simple transactions to using advanced QuickBooks features. Computer Accounting with QuickBooks 2006 provides both the “big picture” overview (“Where am I going?”) and step-by-step instructions (“Where do I click?”).

Book Description
Newton, Darwin, Pasteur, Einstein and other great physicists and biologists are household names, but the great chemists have received little recognition. Yet it could be argued that chemistry, more than any other scientific discipline, has made the modern world possible, largely through products that we take for granted. In the style of the biology classic, The Microbe Hunters, acclaimed science writer Sharon Bertsch McGrayne tells the history of the chemical revolution through the lives of the men who created it. We don't recognize their names, but their legacy is all around us. Before Nicholas LeBlanc discovered the chemical process for making washing soda in the early 1800s, soap was a highly taxed luxury item, and now it's something we use many times everyday without a second thought. Without chemical fertilizer there might have been worldwide starvation in the mid 1900s. Even something as simple as affordable dyes, which brought bright colorful clothing to the masses and democratized fashion, is given full attention. An even-handed account, Prometheans in the Lab describes not only the upside of each pivotal discovery, but also the oftentimes devastating unforseen effects they wrought on the environment and public health.
Customer Reviews:
amazing.......2003-05-13
This accessible but rewarding history of applied chemistry ranks among the best books I have read in years. It does the basic job: providing information, but its prose is transparent and unobstrusive, its exposition uniformly consistent and intelligible, and the narrative even builds to moments of drama; finally, it demonstrates the tension between chemistry and environmental concerns, as well as that between science, capital and society. All this without taking a polemical stance. Who would have thought so drab a subject could be rendered this important and engaging? Anybody with an interest in business, finance, industry, environmentalism, science and applied research should read it. It wouldn't hurt for some book authors to study it as well as how to tranform coal-tar into mauve, so to speak.
Intimates: Genius and madness.......2002-04-17
If you enjoyed "A Beautiful Mind," you should check out "Prometheans in the Lab." Scientific genius and mental illness are clearly not rare combinations. Like John Nash, several of the nine chemists profiled so ably by science writer Sharon Bertsch McGrayne were odd ducks who struggled with intractable mental disorders while achieving society-changing breakthroughs in their labs. McGrayne's nine subjects invented processes and products that define modern life.
Wallace Carothers, an American and the inventor of nylon in 1935, was apparently afflicted with bipolar disorder. Throughout his career he tried to contend with severe mood swings, along with other maladies. In the end, his illnesses overwhelmed him, and he dosed himself with cyanide.
Fritz Haber, a German, invented modern nitrogen-based fertilizer in 1908 and helped end Europe's millennial-long fear of famine. As a young man, he was hospitalized for "neurasthenia," after suffering sleeplessness, excitability, and nervous tension.
Unlike Nash and Carothers, Haber's illness did not progress to a chronic and profound mental disorder. But neither was his life a bed of roses. His wife's depression ended with her suicide. And while Haber's prodigious scientific accomplishments brought him fame, they also brought him infamy. In World War I, he initiated and organized chemical warfare for Germany, through the use of chlorine gas. He argued that poison gas would save lives by shortening the war. (Not all of Germany's enemies were outraged; it turned out that some influential Americans agreed with him.)
Most of the brilliant researchers McGrayne covers did not have mental illnesses. Many of them suffered from a much more prosaic and more ubiquitous "problem"- the inability to really foresee untoward consequences of their inventions. Paul Hermann Muller, a Swiss, invented DDT and in 1948 won a Nobel Prize for medicine. McGrayne's chapter on Muller includes a look at the huge plusses and minuses of the use of DDT. On the one hand, DDT saved millions of people from death from malaria and typhus. On the other side, the substance devastated wildlife, particularly bird populations, wherever it was used in any quantity. Muller apparently had a premonition that DDT was not an unmitigated good, but he didn't vigorously investigate its deleterious properties.
McGrayne is an outstanding contributor to the genre of well-researched, readable books on scientists and science for everyday people. You don't need a science background to enjoy her book; you just need to be curious about some very unusual people and where all sorts of everyday stuff-nylon, fertilizer, soap, DDT, synthetic colors, leaded gasoline and even clean water--came from.
Great stories, great read.......2001-10-17
I picked up this book because a ...review said, "On your next trip to the bookstore bypass the action adventure thrillers and seek out Prometheans in the Lab... It is one of those `story behind the story' books that are often written about celebrities and politicians [but it's about] the chemists responsible for the major chemical processes that undergird modern living.... I wish it were twice its length."
The reviewer was right. The book tells science stories you definitely didn't learn in high school. But it also dramatizes the tangled relationship between technology's benefits and drawbacks and the public's conflicting desires for new products and environmental purity. Great stories, and a great read. *****
the untold stories behind the science.......2001-08-25
I was intrigued by the title and thought I would try it...this is an amazing book that puts into perspective life before refridgeration, soap, safe drinking water, sugar, dye, and more. This book makes a clear link between scientific discovery and the subsequent ripples in society -- as well as how those discoveries impact the lives of the scientists. Prometheans also shows how complicated science can be - for every discovery that changed modern society, it brought with it a host of new issues, ills, and irrevocable changes. A great example is Thomas Midgley, the man who created Freon and tetraethyl lead. Without him we would have no fridges, freezers, cheap gas (or a hole in the ozone layer). In his chapter, you discover that the early factory workers working with lead went insane from the fumes and ended up killing each other in psychotic rages; plus the high levels of lead were polluting the environment. This led to workplace reform and an overhaul of factory safety regulations. Then there's Wallace Carothers, who invented Nylon. He suffered from depression for years, and being around potent lab chemicals and fumes didn't help his outlook any; he killed himself with a cyanide pill he'd carried around for 15 years. I am not a scientist but interested in general scientific discovery. This book was great because each scenario is presented in a historical context, each side is shown and not portrayed in an extreme negative or positive light. It's very balanced, and didn't overwhelm me with incomprehensible explanations of the hard-core science behind the science. This is great & would make a great TV series.

Book Description
Sometimes known as “Red Tides”, some of the wide variety of phytoplankton species in the World’s oceans produce toxins which can harm marine life. In certain circumstances, these harmful algae blooms can even cause illness or death in humans. Shellfish filter feed on phytoplankton and concentrate their toxins in their bodies and people who eat them can contract life threatening food poisoning. A number of countries have monitoring programmes to measure the presence of toxins in algae blooms. Monitoring of Harmful Algae Blooms is all about the research techniques to monitor visible algae blooms and through remote sensing, including infrared techniques, predict them through mathematical modelling.

Customer Reviews:
It Is Where The South Lost The War.......2006-11-22
If you want a comprehensive, informative and easy to read account of Fort Donelson, Fort Henry and the tactical genius and errors of both sides, this is the book to read. The author does a fantastic job of providing accurate details of how the south did, in fact, lose the war by losing Kentucky and Tennessee. The war probably could have been over in 1862 had Lieutenant Phelps destroyed the bridge at Florence. Not doing so provided a retreat for A. S. Johnston to move his men to Corinth and then to Shiloh and allowed the railroad in the western confederacy to remain in tact. This is a GREAT book.
Fine description--but "Where the South Lost the War"?.......2006-08-26
This book presents one of the best detailed descriptions of the Fort Henry and Fort Donelson campaign. The volume lays out the preparation, the logistics, and the actual campaign. The book details the futile (and brief) defense of the poorly designed Fort Henry. It demonstrates the willingness of General Ulysses Grant, unlike many of his general officer brethren in the Union Army at that time, to take action with his immediate move against Fort Donelson, even though he was not sure of what awaited him.
It shows some of his sloppiness in combat situations (as at Shiloh, where he did not bother preparing a stout defense or at Belmont when he lost control of his troops), for instance, when he left Fort Donelson to meet with the naval commander--leaving his army leaderless at the time when the Confederates attempted a breakout. But the book also well describes his tenacity. After the near breakout, Grant takes initiative once again.
The description of the dysfunctional Confederate command structure (from Albert Sydney Johnston on down to the commanders on the ground at Fort Donelson) is done well, although--perhaps--Simon Bolivar Buckner may not have been quite as ineffective as depicted.
All of that said, though, it is hard to see that this campaign was "Where the south lost the war." It certainly destroyed Johnston's defensive line and forced him to retreat all along his line. But with a bit of luck, Shiloh could have recouped some of the loss, had the South prevailed on that bloody battlefield. And many other campaigns and battles--east and west--were critical in their own way.
Nonetheless, a valuable book that probably warrants being in the library of Civil War history buffs.
Great balance of strategy and tactics.......2006-02-21
I thought this book was terrific, one of the best Civil War books in my collection. Gott writes lucidly and in an easy-to-read style. He covers the personalities and the strategies of the campaign in a manner well-balanced with the tactical details of the battles. Although the maps are rather crudely drawn, they are rich in useful detail. (As an instructor at Ft Leavenworth, he knows what to put into Army battle maps. But he also covers the naval aspects well, too.) He is unafraid to inject his candid opinions about the strengths and weaknesses of the key players and he backs these opinions well. Highly recommended.
Good History of two Important Battles.......2005-02-25
Sub-Title: An Analysis of the Fort Henry-Fort Donelson Campaign, February 1862
There are a lot of battles where it might be said that the South lost the war. In this book, Kendall Gott says it was lost in 1862 at these two battles. He certainly presents a good case. This early in the war both armies had their share of "peacetime" generals who weren't very good on the battlefield.
I've never understood for instance why Nathan Bedford Forrest found it so easy to escape Fort Donelson while the other generals were so determined to surrender the fort and their men.
The biggest outcome of these two battles was the rise of Grant. After this came Shiloh, Vicksberg, and the march to Appomattox. The North had found a fighting general.
All in all, I don't think you can say that this is where the South lost the war. I believe that the war was lost before it started. The North had the population, the manufacturing capacity, and the moral high ground (because of slavery) that prevented England and France from coming in on the Southern side.
This is a splendid history of these two battles which have been so often neglected in the general histories of the war.
Rebuttal of Errors In Book Concerning General S.B. Buckner.......2005-02-18
80% of this book is an excellent account of the Battle of Fort Donelson and objectively done. I have been studying this battle in detail for 9 years. The author deviates from objective writing in the 20% which reflects flagrant fact errors and a bias against the conduct of General S.B. Buckner. Without enumerating the scores of flawed reporting about General Buckner let it suffice to say if his performance was as poor as Mr. Gott portrays, Buckner would have been permanently relieved of command not only as a general, but as any officer. Intead President Jefferson Davis, his Secretary of War, and Adjutant General Sam Cooper promoted him to higher command immediately from release from prison. In addition General Longstreet wanted him for a division commander in his corps and Robert E. Lee requested President Davis to have him serve in his army. This in itself is a testament to Buckner's superior performance at Fort Donelson

Disasters galore.......2006-03-04
We in America have a short view of things. This is especially true of disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and the like. Disasters like this happen periodically in time, yet each new one brings tales of woe and predictions of gloom. As such, it is good to have a nice review of the various calamities to have hit mankind. This book does this; it covers both natural disasters such as Pompeii and the San Francisco earthquake, and man-made disasters such as the Titanic. The book is nicely illustrated, with a text accessible by anyone with a high school education and higher.

Compendium of Man-Made Disasters throughout History!.......2006-04-09
This is the second edition of a reference book originally published in 1993. If your interest is tragic air crashes, fires, sinkings, nuclear accidents and miscellaneous tragedies brought about by the hand of man, this book is for you. In almost 400 entries, author Lee Davis presents 2,000 years of disasters primarily caused by human stupidity, neglect, greed and a host of other causes from around the globe.
No one-volume history could describe in detail all man-made disasters of the past 2,000 years. Though Davis' book includes such events as the fire that ravaged Rome in 64 AD, most entries deal with events in the last 200 years. He breaks down the events into eight categories - Air Crashes, Civil Unrest and terrorism, Explosions, etc. - and then provides lists, for example, of 'The Worst Recorded Air Crashes' arranged by country/location followed by a chronological list. After a one-three page overview of that particular disaster category, Davis examines many but not all of those events in summaries ranging in length from a 1/4 of a page to several pages. One hundred photos complement the text.
This volume is obviously great for students writing reports, covering, as it does, events ranging from the Tay River Bridge railway disaster in 1879, the St. Bartholomew's Massacre in 1572, the 1666 London fire, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, etc. Knowledge junkies will appreciate it - 'enjoy' seems somehow wrong - as well. And, though some may view this as a 'Magical Misery Tour,' Davis sometimes includes examples of the bravery and nobility of those frail humans caught in the midst of these horrendous events. And, aside from the human toll, many of these tragedies also had sometimes major and long-listing consequences which Davis covers quite well.

This book is very good in that it contains coverage of so many historical disasters. Its flaw is that it also has quite a number of mistakes. Some of the figures and facts are totally incorrect.

Book Description
Natural disasters have killed more than two million people over the past twenty years--98 percent of the victims have been in low-income countries. Thousands more in these countries are also seriously affected by each disaster, often losing everything they have. Decades of development efforts are literally being swept away.
It is a common perception that we cannot do much about natural disasters. Unmitigated Disasters explains that nothing could be further from the truth. While there are natural hazards beyond human control, like earthquakes and tsunamis, we can still limit them from turning into full-fledged disasters. The risk faced by people is a combination of vulnerability and hazard, and there are many ways by which vulnerability can be reduced. Particularly now as we face climate change and its consequences, Wijkmanâs thoughts on disaster prevention and risk reduction are more important than ever before.

Book Description
Addressing fundamental questions about life, death and the universe Science and the Spiritual Quest examines the ways in which scientists negotiate the complex frontiers between their scientific and religious beliefs. Distinguished cosmologists, physicians, biologists and computer scientists of different faiths explore the connections between the domain of science and the realms of ethics, spirituality and the divine. Through essays and frank interviews, they offer honest, stimulating, and often intensely personal thoughts about life's most impenetrable mysteries. This unique volume presents radical new approaches to the religion/science debate and highlights the continued importance of the "spiritual quest" in a world transformed by the developments of science.
