People & Places Framed in Tumultous Times of Change.......2006-12-24

There are those who form the catalysts in our lives, who lead in such a way
that they influence history. John Wilson was a keen observer of people who were genuine leaders and fairly portrayed their strengths and weaknesses.
As both an Indiana reporter, and a key player in the Justice Department, he
saw six decades of pivotal history in civil rights, Supreme Court rulings,
and tragic scandals. He reported at a time when reporters and office holders used tact and diplomacy before greedy scoops. His summations give credit to those who aided him through the years, instilling a sense of gentlemanly conduct. He longs for the days to return when both sides of a question are fairly debated. I could not put this book down and read it straight through.

History Comes Alive.......2006-08-17

Disclaimer: I was born and reared in Indianapolis and represented it in the U.S. House for 30 years. So naturally I savor this book about the people and places I know well. However, the book goes beyond the borders of my state, both because the author had two careers in Washington,D.C. and because the book is a beautiful ride in a time machine to palpable American history, styles, customs, attitudes, governmental policies and, yes, a fair amount of nievate about such things as tobbaco and slick sales scams.

I wanted to relate how much I enjoyed reading this book, as most of the reviewers have said that it is "Dense" and a "reference". I have to admit that my wife (an incredibly well read Smithie) took one look at it and said "You're reading that?!"

My reaction was totally different, I could not put it down. It is highly readable, though I would describe myself as "Revolutionary War Buff" In retrospect, I loved many things about it: like the best yet description of the Battle of Monmouth, the Charles Lee smear campaign, the true close relationship between many of the aides and especially the discussion of the historiography of the myths handed from early scholars to the present.

Toward the end of the book Lefkowitz addressed my long term fascination: what it was like inside the Tent with all those educated personages about. Imagine the dsicussion of George Washington, Tench Tighlman, Alexander Hamilton, John Laurens and LaFayette, and their visitors like Ben Franklin, Elbridge Gerry, Gouvereur Morris and John Hancock. The small talk, the banter, the discussion of politics and the issues of the day; I wish I had a time capsule! This book took me one step closer to being there. I took great pleasure from it.

This book takes a long-term view of environmental policy in Poland, which thus serves as an example to increase our understanding of environmental policy making in general in the former Eastern bloc countries. The perspective adopted also includes the pre-transition period, since the transformation process cannot be understood without reference to the preceding period. The book investigates the driving forces underlying policy changes, both prior to and after the transition, and identifies elements both of change and continuity - topics that have hitherto been neglected in the literature. A change of political system in Poland did not lead to a major change in the thrust of environmental policy: the policy makers adopted a cautious approach to new instruments and institutions during the transition period. What did change with the transition was the implementation aspect: the effectiveness of environmental policy increased dramatically after the abolition of socialism. The rule of law meant that the state administration and the polluters were subordinated to the legal system, thus increasing the power to environmental policy. Readership: Researchers and students interested in the environment and the countries in transition.
