This book deals with the process of improving our sensemaking capabilities into how to: scan environments actively to gather data that is relevant to pressing issues; interpret usefully what we see — including recognizing and framing problems/opportunities and skills in transforming data into information; make effective decisions — including creating useful rules for deciding how to decide, and how to talk with ourselves and others to receive and offer useful information, make wise choices, and implement decisions well; and evaluate well what we have done and what has occurred. These four topics are the activities of sensemaking — an ongoing conversation with yourself and others about what is really happening and why it is occurring. Sensemaking involves placing stimuli into some kind of framework that is understandable to ourselves. Usually sensemaking is done automatically — unconsciously — without thinking actively about the usefulness or accuracy of our frames, or the process being used in our framing. However, sensemaking can be done consciously, that is, using controlled thinking instead of the usual automatic thinking processes. The contributions in this volume offer skill-building case exercises that are written to help you improve your sensemaking abilities.

Everything a chemistry textbook should not be.......2005-05-22

Horribly written. Painfully disorganized, bouncing from technique to technique and concept to concept at COMPLETE random. Zero photo plates and minimal line drawings that aren't recognizable as anything actually seen in a laboratory. Structural formulas that look like they were produced in MS Word. In fact, the whole ugly layout has this appearance. The $107 price tag must have been a belabored attempt at humor.

This book has been published and is already available at the Geological Society of America (3300 Penrose Place, P.O. Box 9140, Boulder, CO 80301). The volume contains an Introduction and 23 research articles on various aspects of the geology of the Himalaya and Tibet. The book is the outcome of an international conference (the 11th Himalaya-Karakoram-Tibet Workshop) held in Arizona in April 1996. Geologists interested in the High Asia will find it useful in their research work.

Even though I am not unbiasied, (I do, in fact, love Lefty O'Kane), I would have to comment on the deep-down good feelings that the author has for these men, and also for their women. Happily, they all hold him in the same high esteem. They/we, see him as a 'Good Guy', and therefore read his words with love and warm humor. Even though each of us recognized our spouse, (and ourselves), we knew that we would all be treated with respect, along with great affection.

Could we use a lot more of this positive stuff?

This book is an excellent reference for nurses to use to communicate with their Hispanic patients. I had never taken any spanish courses before and the material in the book was easy to understand and the cds that came with it helped with correct pronounciation. I highly recommend it!
