Gas chromatography remains the world's most widely used analytical technique, yet the expertise of a large proportion of chromatographers lies in other fields. Many users have little real knowledge of the variablesin the chromatographic process, the interaction between those variables, how they are best controlled, how the quality of their analytical results could be improved, and how analysis times can be shortened to facilitate the generation of a greater numberof more reliable results on the same equipment. An analyst with a more comprehensive understanding of chromatographic principles and practice, however, can often improve the quality of the data generated, reduce the analytical time, and forestall the needto purchase an additional chromatograph or another mass spectrometer.The Second Edition of Analytical Gas Chromatography is extensively revised with selected areas expanded and many new explanations and figures. The section on sample injection has been updated to include newer concepts of split, splitless, hot and cold on-column, programmed temperature vaporization, and large volume injections. Coverage of stationary phases now includes discussion, applications, and rationale of the increased thermal and oxidative resistance of the newly designed silarylenepolysiloxane polymers. Conventional and"extended range"polyethylene glycol stationary phases are examined from the viewpoints of temperature range and retention index reliabilities, and the chapter on"Variables"has been completely rewritten. The practical effects that these changes cause to the chromatography is examined in pressure-, flow-, and"EPC-"regulated systems."Column Selection, Installation, and Use"has been completely rewritten as well. The accuracy of theVan Deemter plots has been greatly enhanced; a new program corrects for the first time for the changes in gas density and diffusion that occur during the chromatographic process because of solute progression through the pressure drop of the column. A new section has also been added on meeting thespecial requirements of columns destined for mass spectral analysis. The chapter on"Special Applications"has been expanded to include considerations of"selectivity tuning,"of fast analysis, and the section of Applications has been thoroughly updated and expanded.

A must read book for serious chromatographer.......2000-11-14

Analytical gas chromatography, second edition is an excellent reference book for those of us who take gas chromatography seriously, not as a fringe technology, nor learn enough to get by. The second edition was substantially revised from the first edition. Very up to date information with insights on why things appears in certain way. Chapter 5, variables in the gas chromatographic process, and chapter 6 (subsection 9), optimizing operational parameters for specific columns, and chapter 8 on selective tuning are very useful and invaluable.

This book has an excellent chapter on injections. The rest of the book contains things you can typically find in your user's manual. If you are interested in knowing every single aspect of the GC, this would be a good book. If you are just trying to get the GC up and running with a new compound, this may not be your best bet. Too much information and not enough time to absorb it all.

Funny story.......2004-11-22

Beneath the lowbrow humor is a wonderful story with interesting characters. The main character and his two friends are in constant conflict with everyone. Their clashes with the school bully, a girl their same age, adds a unique dimension to the story. You'll laugh aloud at these boy's, cheer their successful adventures, and curse their bad behavior. The ending is a real surprise. It puts this book in a catagory of its own. The story is set in the 1960's and is filled with circumstances baby boomers can identify with.

Gladiators, I salute you.......2007-04-02

Gives a detailed examination of the daily life and training of the gladiators, and the kinds of weapons and armor they used. The book mentions a number of different kinds of gladiator, the secutor, the Thracian, the Retiarius, the Myrmillo, the Hoplomachus, the Provocator, the Sagitarius, and the Essendarius, and also gives brief fleeting mentions of female gladiators. The author follows the life of Danaos, the typical gladiator, detailing social origins, training, accomodation, daily routine, combat, and the possibility of retirement. As always, Angus McBride's artwork is excellent, visually captivating and highly detailed.

A good book,but not the best........2003-12-21

I found some mistakes in this book. The historical research is not good but the illustrations of Angus Mac Bride are gorgeous!
Unfortunatelly,there are few illustrations. If you like ancient Rome and gladiators,buy Gladiators and Caesars: The Power of Spectacle in Ancient Rome by Eckart Kohne.

An excellent handy reference.......2001-11-17

Gladiators 100BC-200AD is an excellent addition to the prolific Osprey series of military books. A nice summary of the superb (but a tad costlier) Gladiators and Ceasars, Gladiators 100Bc-200AD combines much of the latest information on these showmen of the arena with magnificent illustrations by the legendary Angus McBride. The descriptions of training and living conditions of the gladiators is nice and concise, with some good asides based on grafritti findings and written records. The descriptions of the various fighters are good, with the illustrations doing much to imprint the differences in the reader's mind. Probably the only real failing of the volume is the lack of photographs of either actual gladiatorial armour, especially the helmets, or the excellent reproductions done under Dr Marcus Junklemann's supervision. An image of the myrmillon helmet described with the "scale-like" pattern on the bowl would have been really appreciated. All-in-all, an excellent addition to my growing gladiator library. Now, if only someone would translate Junklemann's Das Spiel mit dem Todt into English and make it available to purchase.

Looking Forward (from the past).......2002-01-31

This is a very interesting book allowing one to look at the future (from the 1940s) from Alan Turing's frame of mind.

There is a lot of unintended humor here. Computers are people who do calculations. Computer programs are "instruction tables". The imminent demise of the mathematicians who write the instruction tables (because the machine can eventually write its own) leads to the creation of gibberish (computerese).

If Turing could only imagine his brainchild would end up as an internet appliance... or a game platform. I think he would be amazed and pleased.
