    Book Description

Cost Structure and the Measurement of Economic Performance is designed to provide a comprehensive guide for students, researchers or consultants who wish to model, construct, interpret, and use economic performance measures. The topical emphasis is on productivity growth and its dependence on the cost structure. The methodological focus is on application of the tools of economic analysis - the `thinking structure' provided by microeconomic theory - to measure technological or cost structure, and link it with market and regulatory structure. This provides a rich basis for evaluation of economic performance and its determinants. The format of the book stresses topics or questions of interest rather than the theoretical tools for analysis. Traditional productivity growth modeling and measurement practices that result in a productivity residual often called the `measure of our ignorance' are initially overviewed, and then the different aspects of technological, market and regulatory structure that might underlie this residual are explored. The ultimate goal is to decompose or explain the residual, by modeling and measuring a multitude of impacts that determine the economic performance of firms, sectors, and economies. The chapters are organized with three broad goals in mind. The first is to introduce the overall ideas involved in economic performance measurement and traditional productivity growth analysis. Issues associated with different types of (short and long run, internal and external) cost economies, market and regulatory impacts, and other general cost efficiencies that might impact these measures are then explored. Finally, some of the theoretical, data construction and econometric tools necessary to justify and implement these models are emphasized.

          Book Description

In the UK the received wisdom has tended to be that, historically, British labour law was abstentionist or non-interventionist, best epitomised by the words of Lord Wedderburn who has written that '...collective bargaining has developed in a system which depends very little on the law, which is covered by very few decisions of the judges, and which is controlled by statute very little, if at all.'. It is not until we reach the Industrial Relations Act 1971 that we discover the first attempt in peacetime to move to a legally regulated system. However, the accuracy of this non-interventionist depiction appears to very much depend on the period which is examined, which is why an historical perspective is needed in order to understand the significance of the current shape and scope of British labour law.

The aim of this work is to re-examine the received interpretation by looking at both the role given to law, and that anticipated and argued for it, during the most formative period of its development, the period between 1867 and 1945. The book also revisits the debate about war-time legislation which has tended to be viewed as standing apart from mainstream labour law but which the author demonstrates to have important linkages to the past and present.

Christchurch is very prettily situated; for although it stands on a perfectly flat plain, towards the sea there are the Port Hills, and the town itself is picturesque, owing to the quantities of trees and the irregular form of the wooden houses; and as a background we have the most magnificent chain of mountains--the back-bone of the island--running from north to south, the highest peaks nearly always covered with snow, even after such a hot summer as this has been.

Lady Barker's sparkling narrative describes her life on a Canterbury sheep station in the 1850's. No prim Victorian lady content with domestic activities, the young and vivacious Lady Barker insisted on being included in every adventure.

The exhilaration of sleeping out in the open and burning off tussock just for the thrill of it; the joy of a crisp Canterbury morning; the pathos of a baby's death; the hospitality of a bachelor runholder; the drama of being snowbound without food when the servants have taken to their beds to die warm; all are recounted in an intimate style which makes this tale seem as fresh as when it was written.

I expected every moment to hear the revolver go off, but mercifully it did not do so; and as his thorny bed was hardly to be endured, F---soon kicked himself off it, and before I could realize that he was unhurt, had scrambled to his feet, and was rushing off, crying in school-boy glee, "That will fetch him out" That (the rock) certainly did fetch him (the pig) out in a moment, and Pincher availed himself of the general confusion to seize hold of his enemy's hind leg, which he never afterwards let go.

                                Book Description

This volume synthesizes 16 years of geological and geophysical studies which document an 85-km-wide impact crater buried 500 m beneath Chesapeake Bay in south eastern Virginia, USA. The authors integrate extensive seismic reflection profiling and deep core drilling to analyze the structure, morphology, gravimetrics, sedimentology, petrology, geochemistry, and paleontology of this submarine structure. Of special interest are a detailed comparison with other terrestrial and extraterrestrial craters, as well as a conceptual model and computer simulation of the impact. The extensive illustrations encompass more than 150 line drawings and core photographs. An accompanying CD-ROM includes selected seismic profiles, scaled cross sections, detailed maps, and downhole geophysical logs.

                                    Book Description

During the Middle Ages Islam was Christian Europe's only civilised and most troublesome neighbour, the Middle Ages saw almost continual strife between these two distinct cultures. By the time the Frankish Crusaders reached the Middle East at the end of the 11th century Islam had already incorporated three major races: Arabs, Persians and Turks, each of which contributed different strengths to the armoury of Islam. This title explores the organisation, uniforms and equipment of the armies of Islam from the 7th to 11th centuries, backed by illustrations, museum photographs and eight full page colour plates by popular Osprey artist Angus McBride.

This book provides information and excellent McBride plates on the armies of Islam from the beginning of the Umayyad Caliphate to the eve of the Crusades, also detailing western African Moorish and Berber armies, and the Daylami mercenaries of Iran.

Dr. Nicolle has written another Classic and Mr. McBrides color plates are superb. For all History buffs, teachers, and students this is a fine book on a highly neglected topic. The author takes you back in time and gives the reader a detailed, colorful, scene. From the combatants tactics, dress, weapons, and geography. To a slice of civilian life are all covered. Had their been some colorful maps I would have given it 5 stars.

This book was very interesting for my sixth grade readers. I found it was very factual and informative. No opinion discolored any of the facts.

Another of Dr. Nicolle's excellent overviews of medieval military organizationa and equipment. The soldiers and mercenaries of the Caliphate, the Umayyad, Abbasid and Fatimid dynasties as well as other dynastic and succesor states are illustrated and described. Anyone interested in this period as well as the early Crusades and Muslim Spain will find something of interest. The cross fertilization of equipment, tactics and troop types is especially evident in this work. Dr. Nicolle actually suggests that the kite shield, so often associated with the Normans, could well have come from the Byzantines, via Muslim Sicily or Spain! Cons: insufficient maps. Pros: Angus McBride's beautiful color plates. Thus, 4 stars.

I like Osprey Books, especially the Men at Arms series. I enjoy the lovely color plates, and this book is no exception. Not only do we see the dress of every day military, but also civilian men and women. The color plates are supplememnted by photographs and line drawings. The text describes a small bit about the culture and describes the various equipments, formations, leaders, and some better known units of the time period. The bibliography is helpful for continuing your research into this colorful subject. This is one of those books that you won't want to loan out unless you have a second copy!

                                      Product Description

The Russian Revolution marked a series of events in imperial Russia that culminated in 1917 with the abolition of the czarist monarchy and the establishment of the Soviet communist state under Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin. While Lenin and his followers purportedly advocated the rise of the Russian peasantry, opposition to the Bolshevik Party erupted into a bloody civil war and was met with Lenin’s ravaging “Red Terror” campaign. The revolution effected a severe change in all economic, political and social relationships in Russian society—a change that would endure until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. This historical memoir imparts distinctive social and cultural insights into the realities of the Russian Revolution and the later effect of World War II on the people who suffered under the Soviet Union. Narrated in sequential first person by a mother, Nadia Stakhanova, and her two daughters, Natasha and Vera Stakhanova, the book gives the factual account of a family whose privileged way of life was shattered by Communism and war. Ranging in setting from czarist Russia to present-day Melbourne and the campus of Vassar in New York, the story follows the family through a period of perpetual poverty and crisis, beginning with the sentencing of father Vladimir to death for loyalty to the White Russian faction. It continues with the family’s subsequent evasion of the Russian secret police, the German occupation of their home city during World War II, their forced abandonment of five-year-old daughter Natasha, and their flight to the West through Russia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Italy and Austria. The reunification of the family in Australia marks the story’s climax.

And answering the question of where and how this attitude began can help us better understand the world we live in and the science that governs it.

A reasonable discussion on how the Greeks started us on the road to modern science. Nothing particularly brilliant or new. Probably good for a text book.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't know what to rate this until it was time to review.......2005-03-03

I read this book with seriously mixed feelings until I finished it. The premise is the ancient origins of science. Andrew Gregory focused much of his attention of course on the Greeks, I suppose the philosophy of their "big names" like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle naturally evolved into natural philosophy, a point hinted at in the text.

However I felt slightly gypped(sp?) as my limited knowledge of the subject led me to believe scienctific thoughts were around the Babylonian and Phoenician culture(who got very little space in book). Then I reread the blurb on back and realized this book delivers exactly what it promises.

It is the birth of science, charting how the ancient Greeks turned away from supernatural, and mythological explanations of the universe and looked instead for natural reasons. It is very make that VERY readable. Without talking down to his audience Gregory relates how various schools of thought sought to enlighten humanity about the cosmos, human anatomy etc...
in very simple layperson's terms so a degree in science is unneccesary.

It is a little book, yet that too delivers the promise of the title as it is the birth of science so it like a birth deals with the very beginning although light mention is made of scientific discovery's toddler years and adolescence.

A fascinating read, although I confess found the latter chapters especially one on science's ties to Astrology and Alchemy to be my favourites.

Most of the information about Astronomy was familiar to me, but it was interesting to get a refresher. The material on Medicine was new to me; I'd heard of Galen but didn't know he was Greek. Some excellent quotations from the original reference material helped to put it into the context of the time.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for San Francisco Bay Area gardeners........2001-08-04

This beautifully organized book provides an easy-to-follow guide for establishing butterfly, bird, and insect habitats in your own garden. Host plants, nectar plants, and food sources (both native and non-native) including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and vines are listed for both butterflies and birds. Maintenance of the habitat garden is detailed with specific suggestions. Additional sections explain the importance of encouraging beneficial insects, the beauty and role of ponds in the garden, and special advice on "how to" start your own habitat garden. Color photographs provide a visual guide while spot illustrations and quotations provide inspiration and encouragement. A "must" for any Bay Area gardener.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Inspiring book!.......2001-08-03

This is a beautiful little book, a real jewel that makes providing a pleasing habitat for both our wild friends and ourselves an easy task. It certainly inspired me to add more habitat plants to my garden, and I reap the benefits daily. I especially loved how she put the plant photos on the outside page edges so I can flip through and relocate the information I want quickly. This book should also be useful for many people outside the SF Bay Area. Providing wildlife habitat is so important now.
