    Book Description

In June 1998, U.S. Vice President Al Gore and the National Partnership for Reinventing Government presented a team of U.S. Army logisticians and RAND analysts the Hammer Award in recognition of a great accomplishment: streamlining army logistics. For decades, the performance of army logistics fell progressively behind best commercial practices. Army mechanics would wait on average a month for spare parts from distant supply depots in order to repair a down weapon system. Today a high-velocity, streamlined army supply process delivers spare parts in half the time it took to deliver them just 3 years earlier. In fact, these days it acutally takes less time to get a spare part from an army supply depot than from a commercial vendor.

The army isn't the only organization that has needed to rethink its supply chain practices. If you run a manufacturing or procurement organization that needs a boost, this book can be an excellent primer on how to frame your thoughts.

            Book Description

This symposium celebrated the 25th year of experimental work at the Bates Laboratory using electrons to investigate the properties of nucleons and nuclei. Experimentalists and theorists from other sister laboratories together with local representatives from Bates and MIT spoke both about the past highlights of their field and about the current trends both at Bates and elsewhere. The symposium began with talks on nuclear structure studies with electrons, it went on to discuss the structure of few-body nuclei and the hadronic constituents of those nuclei, and concluded with a review of the status of parity-violating electron scattering with reports on the recently completed measurements at Bates and at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.

This book provided me with a deeper understanding of both contemporary philosophy and the satirical genre. The Author's brilliant marriage of Wittgensteinian philosophy and modern literary criticism was simply brillant.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it for student and scholars alike.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and wide-ranging academic book!.......2002-04-03

This is a book of play, not a dry academic reference book. Part of the enjoyment of reading this, unlike reading many an academic book, is the playful, humorous voice of the author.

Because of its scope (covering everything from Hawthorne to Moorcock) and its style, the book should be read in order and not just consulted piecemeal. Reading it in order allows the reader to discover how certain words are being defined and used -- for example, my immediate reaction to the phrase "ideals of the Enlightenment" is different from how Kaplan ultimately defines it. Also, reading it in order exposes the entire range and scope of the satiric play, allowing the reader to see the various contradictions -- the statements against categorization/taxonomic nomenclature followed by his own categorization for example or the seemingly contradictory reactions to complexity theory and science that only make sense in the context of his enactment of Menippean Satire itself. Without reading the book in order, Chapter 9 "The Edge of Capital" seems out of place because of subject matter and voice. By reading that chapter and then Chapter 10, "Scaling up the Homeric Question," the reader understands the purpose of chapter 9.

Do not turn to this book to find a quick definition of Menippean Satire -- although the book does define it -- or the one and only reading of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" -- although Kaplan does provide one. Rather, the importance of the book lies in its enactment of satire itself and the power and depth of the illustrations of critical synoptics. You leave the book not with an answer to how certain works should be read but with more questions about how to read, about what particular texts mean, about connections between texts -- in fact, about whether the book you've just read is a satire or not itself. These questions are not the result of a flaw in the book but in fact emphasize the notion inherent in the book that the universe is "variable and particular," that there is no Platonic absolute (121). The epigram that begins Chapter 10 and speaks of riddles with no answers also emphasizes that this is a book that is a riddle without an answer. In describing Melville's practice as "synoptic analysis" and his method as consisting "of testing propositions by examining them in contexts where they will be revealed as either valid or nonsensical"(124), Kaplan describes his own method. For me, the appeal of the book is not in the specific readings of texts he provides -- to be honest, some seemed to be very commonsensical readings easily arrived at after closely reading the text (or perhaps I have just been trained academically in the same manner) or, as in the case of some of the readings of Blake for example, are ones I find oversimplified -- but instead in his approach, his activity of exploration and questioning.

Anyone interested in examining literature and understanding satire, anyone knowledgeable about academic infighting in literary criticism and theory, or anyone who just wants a book to engage their intellect and make them chuckle at the same time should check this book out.

            5 out of 5 stars Book Description.......2002-01-11

Critical Synoptics is a study of satire and British philosophy. Carter Kaplan argues that the tradition of satire from the early Greeks to the present day represents an important philosophical critique of the misguided claims that arise again and again in the fields of science, education, and religion. The book compares the important ideas of the great modern philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein to the work of such authors as Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Blake, and John Milton. After tracing the history of "intellectual mythology" as it is treated in satirical literature, the book examines intellectual mythology in dystopian works such as Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange. The book concludes with an analysis of contemporary myths which support runaway consumer society and various corporate challenges to democracy and academic freedom.

For the past twenty years, literary study has been dominated by scientific or pseudo-scientific approaches to literature, and the discussion in university classrooms has emphasized academic fashion and theory. Kaplan's book instead emphasizes the ideas that drive great and popular literature. He goes beyond the established academic cultures of knowledge, and makes a forceful (and humorous) statement of humanistic understanding.

The book will be helpful to people seeking a readable introduction to the study of contemporary philosophy and satirical literature. Kaplan provides clear descriptions of the humbug that is targeted again and again in the satirical tradition: from the claims of dubious philosophers in ancient Greece to the unintelligible incantations of today's mystical masters of postmodernism.

Zinsmeister takes the reader into Iraq's urban neighborhoods, rural villages, and guerrilla snake pits, and shows exactly how young American soldiers are quietly but inexorably choking off a terrorist insurrection and planting the seeds of a dramatically different Iraq. He talks with the GIs and their commanders at an intimate gut-level. He also talks with the men and women on the Iraqi "street." What he discovered-in reporting that is dramatically reinforced in public opinion polls he analyzes-is a story missed or ignored by the mainstream American media: ordinary Iraqis back our war and occupation and the U.S. is on the verge of winning of a tough guerilla struggle. Gripping and perceptive, filled with raw candor and human interest, "Dawn Over Bagdad" is an up-to-the-minute report on America's most urgent national struggle, as seen through the eyes of the U.S. servicemen and Iraqis who are in the middle of the most dangerous place in the world.

                5 out of 5 stars A Refreshing View.......2005-10-23

I found this book to be a refreshing, compelling read. The Iraq War and the post-war counter-insurgency are two of the most polarizing issues facing both the American public and the world at large. Unfortunately, the public is more often than not presented only one side of the story. Zinsmeister deftly exposes the pessimistic attitude that permeates much of the reporting of the "main-stream media" and unquestionably affects the way in which much of the information we receive is disseminated. Utilizing his experience as an embedded combat reporter in some of the most volitile areas in Iraq, Zinsmeister presents a credible, fact-based argument in favor of the President's approach to foreign policy in post 9/11 America.

                1 out of 5 stars pure propaganda.......2005-10-09

you guys must REALLY be smokin that dope, this book is hot garbage. it is filled with government style propagandic writing, framing the u.s. effort as that of angels, and the iraqi region as caveman central.

so "rah rah", so jingoistic, bush might as well hand this out at picnics and church luncheons.

                5 out of 5 stars Just a note..........2005-08-09

Sorry to nitpick, but in the spirit of "setting the record straight," Iraq regained sovereignty on 28 June 2004, not 30 June as mentioned below. It was a bit anticlimactic, as we had all been stockpiling for weeks waiting for the big attack to happen on the 30th.

                5 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-10-20

This re-inforces what I hear from people I know that are in the military who have either served in Iraq or in contact with those who are serving. What you don't hear on the news, but what you should know to give a complete picture of the situation in Iraq. It's a quick read, but if you can't find time to read the entire book, at least read the last chapter.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2004-10-17

This book was well written and difficult to put down. I highly recommend it to everyone.

The Isaiah Effect: Decoding the Lost Science of Prayer and Prophesy draws on new discoveries in quantum physics, as well as a variety of spiritual traditions and religious documents--including Tibetan, Mayan, and Hopi prophecies; Nostradamus; and the Dead Sea Scrolls. From these sources, author Gregg Braden believes that he has recovered "a lost science with the power to bring a lasting end to all war, disease, and suffering; initiate an unprecedented era of peace and cooperation between governments and nations; render destructive patterns of weather harmless; bring lasting healing to our bodies; and redefine ancient prophecies of devastation and catastrophic loss of life." Mass prayer is the technique that will allow all of these goals to be achieved, Braden says: "the choice of many people, focused in a specific manner, has a direct and measurable effect on our quality of life." The book includes careful readings of ancient texts, prophetic pronouncements, and mini-travelogues (Braden leads groups to visit sacred sites around the world), and its arguments may strike some readers as far-fetched. But Braden's basic idea--that hope can change the world in concrete ways--is a very good one.

                    Book Description

A Groundbreaking Interpretation of Prayer, Quantum Science, and Prophecy.

Only one document was discovered completely intact among the 25,000 fragments of papyrus, parchment, and hammered copper known as the Dead Sea Scrolls: the Great Isaiah Scroll. Nearly one thousand years older than existing copies of the Old Testament's Book of Isaiah, the twenty-two-foot-long parchment was still rolled and sealed in its original earthen vase when it was discovered in 1946. The completeness of the Isaiah Scroll offers unprecedented insight into the power of an ancient mystery -- a lost mode of prayer -- that modern science is just beginning to understand. Displayed today in Jerusalem's Shrine of the Book Museum, the Great Isaiah Scroll is believed to be so precious by modern scholars that it's withdrawn into a vault beneath the building's floor in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

In The Isaiah Effect, the dazzling new work from the author of Awakening to Zero Point and Walking Between the Worlds, scientist and visionary Gregg Braden offers a radical departure from traditional interpretations of Isaiah's text. Weaving state-of-the-art research with his extensive knowledge of the ancient Essenes (the creators of the scroll texts), Braden invites us on a journey where science and miracles are merged into a new wisdom -- and lead to a startling conclusion. He suggests that Isaiah, the first Old Testament prophet, left precise instructions to the people of the future describing an unconventional mode of prayer.

Using principles recognized only recently in quantum physics, Braden demonstrates how Isaiah's nonreligious, nondenominational form of prayer transcends time and distance to bring healing to our bodies and peace to the nations of our modern world.

4 out of 5 stars Another piece of the puzzle.......2007-10-11

I found this book to be an enjoyable read, and see it as another piece in the puzzle of discovering the meaning of life. Because of Braden's foundation in the technology field the book has a very scientific "feel" to it, and should appeal to anyone with an orientation toward the technical. I really liked the idea of non-denominational religion that emerges out of his analysis of Isaiah's approach to prayer.

This is one of the best books written about the law of atraction, Gregg Braden explains in simple words what he understood is written in the Isaiah Scroll! He has traveled to many countries, in search for Sacred Writtings that shed some light into a special way of praying, and taping to paralel realities! He's gone to Tibetan monasteries, Egipt, and other places, looking for answers!! He has knowledge in Shamanism, and to his opinion he sees a lynk between Shamanic knowledge, what the Isaiah Scroll says and documents of the Essenes, I do share his opinion, and found his book very helpful in my studies about paralel universes. The book also talk about healing, global peace and unity!!!

1 out of 5 stars *Secret* Prayer for the Da Vinci Code Set.......2007-02-23

                    This book is pure bull-schtick.

First of all, the book's title is completely misleading. Braden's research is shoddy & suspicious no matter how 'sincere' & 'heartfelt' his voice may sound. I don't believe for one moment Braden didn't know what he was doing & what his motivation was (my number 1 guess: MONEY????).

And certainly his editor? My goodness you'd have to be completely clueless about religion, metaphysics, science & scholarly research to the grift going on here - not to mention just plain bad writing (it's all name dropping!).

Braden's writing is full of misleading statements, non sequitors & so many blatantly false statements (not to mention repeated misspelling of 'Nicaea') his editor is either indulging in some mind altering drugs or was (just like Braden) simply in it for the money. If a book like this can be published then the one caveat in reading such trash is that Braden's book is absolute proof that one day any one of us can be published.

If I may mention a few of the outrageous & ridiculous comments Braden makes. Braden strangely (meaning in a whacked out way without offering any scientific data) connects the Essenes to modern day Tibetan monks & even to the Mayans?!? And what would a fanatical non-rabbinical sect of Judaism have to teach us about a mode of prayer in order to achieve earthly goals & desires when they themselves were ascetics?

Essenes were fanatics who believed in an apocalyptic ending to all mankind. They shunned everything from sex to cooked food & their beliefs had nothing whatsoever to do with manifesting in the here & now - or even manifesting anything other than apocalyptic destruction & the return of their messiah. Yet Braden doesn't appear to know these important facts about the Essenes.

Braden also doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that it has been many years since scholars have refuted the widely accepted belief that the Essenes wrote the DS Scrolls. Regardless the DS Scrolls (some of the DSS - including The Great Isaiah Scroll - I have read partial English translation) have so far offered nothing in the way of instruction for a secret mode of prayer.

Here is an example (there are several of these) where Braden states an opinion as if it were fact. In chapter 7 entitled, 'The Language of God: The Lost Science of Prayer & Prophecy', Braden comments:

"Revelations from the pre-fourth-century texts, however, remind us that there are no magic codes of vowels or consanants that open doorways into forgotten realms. The secret of prayer lies beyond words of praise, the incantations, and the rhythmic chants to 'the powers that be.'"

This comment, which is Braden's opinion, is in my humble opinion NOT TRUE. There ARE secret pathways which the power of language can unlock simply through the vibratory pronunciation of vowels & consanants found in any language modern or ancient. The Kabbalists teach this. So too did the ancient Greeks. As well as certain schools of both Hinduism & Buddhism. Any modern day occultist will also attest to the power of both the spoken & written word which one may use in prayer to influence our environment & in turn manifest our desires (within reason).

Learning how to use this power properly does take dedication & practice. Read anything by Israel Regardie, Peter Carroll, Phil Hine, Dr. Jonn Mumford, Franz Bardon, Harish Johari's chakra writings & CD if you are interested to learn more about the power of prayer, visualization, language & sound. Another great book is Magical Alphabets by Nigel Pennick.

Before buying this book (or any of his slop - The God Code is terrific for a real laugh) I urge you to research Braden's credentials. I felt funny as soon as I read, 'Earth Science Specialist' listed as some sort of "scientific" title of Braden's. He is nothing of the sort. Nor is he a scholar of ancient texts. I'll venture to say that he's nothing more than another charismatic narcissistic delusional superstar which the "new age" seems to attract, cultivate & make famous.

Hopefully, real scholars & scientists will take Braden on. Unfortunately, I am not an "Earth Science Specialist", nor even a scientist. But sketchy titles combined with the overwhelming lack of proper footnotes & references is, as always, an excellent BS indicator. Please do not support this dishonest hack or others like him.

There are REAL scientists, archaeologists, scholars etc...who are honest, compassionate & doing very important work with integrity. If you desire to give your money away please choose wisely so that more progessive research will be made available by real scientists with proper credentials; making charlatans like Braden fade away.

Very insightful and interesting. Gregg Braden is offering the world a hope for peace. This book transends all religion and offers unity to all people.

                          Book Description

Building on ten years working with pastoral communities, ITDG carried out action research in Kenya with two communities for whom wildlife management issues are a matter of daily life. The research found very little trade off for these communities in terms of enhanced opportunities derived from local wildlife management systems. Many complex cultural and social issues are raised by a shift to cultivation and other new livelihood strategies for traditionally pastoralist communities, none of which currently promote beneficial interactions with wildlife conservation. This working paper presents detailed analysis of the two case studies and then addresses the question of whether the problematic situations which emerge can be addressed by improved management of interactions between the stakeholders, or whether, in fact, the dilemmas faced are part of a deeper structural conflict of interests which the more optimistic win-win literature on communities and wildlife management in Africa has obscured.
