Customer Reviews:
This book is a joke.......2007-05-04
stay away from this book. it tells you nothing helpful. The authors are playing a joke on you.
Where's the Beef?.......2006-03-24
I love the Entreprenuer's web site and magazine so I snapped this book up. It's really a fireside reading and doesn't go into detailed action steps. You are better off going on the government's import export web site: http://www.itds.treas.gov/index.html
Start your own Import/Export Business.......2006-01-30
The authors of this book could not make up their minds "should this be a joke or serious book" their choice was to make serious subjects into a joke and thus made a truly worthless book. It got to the point where I was so upset at having to read 6th grade jokes (sorry 6th graders, you are probably much more clever) that any information was lost. You can learn as more about the import/export business by going to the store and reading shipping labels.
Another Book Not by an Author.......2005-04-10
Why isn't there an author attached to this book? Just editors from this quick buck series. Do they have experience starting a import/export business? You can probably find everything in this book from google. Save your money.
Great book full of information.......2004-04-07
If you want to start an import/export business I would start with this book. Full of information, forms, websites, and government contacts to get you started within weeks. Great book, I'm looking forward to starting my own import/export business part time to start.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, no nonsense.......2007-09-27
I am surprised by all the other negative reviews. THis is a good book on the basics of importing. It is a little general, and some is a little out of date. Good ideas, and a good start. I copied the cover so I could read some of the publishers other titles. I liked it. I also recommend Nelson, Zodl, and Weiss' books. THose are more specific with details.
Totally useless. Several hours of your life you can never get back........2005-07-22
There is nothing in this book about importing or exporting. It is about starting a business in general and is full of information you could obtain in one average business magazine. Total waste of time.
Out of date.......2004-03-17
This book should prove to be of no help to anyone. The technology recommendations are completely out of date and there is little information on Importing/Exporting. I found it a waste of time.
i feel stupidar for having raed thiz buk.......2004-03-12
This book might be nice for a pre-kindergarten reading level and someone that has absolutely no serious interest in starting an import/export business, for the others i recommend not purchasing this crap. This book will only anger you when it defines importing as follows "Importing is, basically, the opposite of exporting..." Ya don't say!? I'm still searching for another import/export book worth a flip, so far i've found my best information from digging through the U.S. customs website, better luck to the rest of ya.
WRONG TITLE.......2003-05-30
The title of the book should be along the lines of starting a small business. Maybe the wrong jacket was put on it during publishing!

Book Description
The central theme, which threads through the entire book, concerns computational modeling methods for water. Modeling results for pure liquid water, water near ions, water at interfaces, water in biological microsystems, and water under other types of perturbations such as laser fields are described. Connections are made throughout the book with statistical mechanical theoretical methods on the one hand and with experimental data on the other. The book is expected to be useful not only for theorists and computer analysts interested in the physical, chemical, biological and geophysical aspects of water, but also for experimentalists in these fields.

Book Description
Okinawa was the last campaign of World War II in the Pacific, a bloody affair that convinced the U.S. high command that an invasion of Japan would prove so costly that deployment of atomic weapons was a requirement. This tells the story from the Japanese side. ?From April to June 1945, U.S. forces fought fiercely for control of the island of Okinawa, against the well dug in 32nd Army of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA).
The amphibious landing of four divisions of U.S. troops on 1 April 1945 confirmed IJA 32nd Army Staff's worst fears about the U.S. challenge. Within a few weeks, new tactical patterns evolved on Okinawa. U.S. tanks moved forward into dead spaces between cave port fire zones, escorted by infantry. The Japanese, to protect their cave openings, put infantry on the surface to drive back the tank-infantry teams. The result was searing clashes between small units of U.S. and Japanese infantry for the protection of tanks and cave fire ports respectively.
Vigorous attacks by U.S. soldiers and marines, using flame-thrower tanks cut through IJA positions quickly after 9 June. The IJA rear-area headquarters were finally threatened so that by 22 June most major unit commanders had committed ritual suicide and ordered surviving soldiers to fight on as long as they could. then do the same, Some of these surviving IJA soldiers unfortunately committed atrocities against the civilian population. and only a small percentage surrendered. By the time the fighting stopped, U.S. casualties of all kinds, including wounded and non-combat injuries, were also high, exceeding 70,000. about equal to the number of IJA regular troops that had defended the island.?Over 160 photos and numerous maps help illustrate the riveting narrative, telling the story of American heroism against a fanatical and desperate enemy.?
Customer Reviews:
Rehash of better told material........2006-10-27
The author wrote a brief rehash of an all too frequently overlooked campaign in the waning months of the Pacific War. The recent movie, Flags of Our Father's and the accompanying Hollywood hyperbole only serves to push Okinawa along with Peleliu out of the public memory.
Okinawa was more brutal and longer than Iwo Jima, cost more casualties in terms of lives lost. 100,000+ vs 20,000 for the Japanese, 12,000 vs 6,800 American Casualties, and between 100,000 and 200,00 civilian casualties. Better more humanistic accounts have been written, With the old Breed by Eugene Sledge and Good By to Darkness, by William Manchester. The treatments Typhoon of Steel and Tennozan (aka, Okinawa, the Blood and the Bomb)dealt more into the realm of oral history of the Battle. While Battle for Okinawa is the only account written from the Japanese side. Penned by the highest ranking survivor of the battle, Col Yahara, Ushijima's chief of staff. For a cold dispassionate account buy or download the US Army's official account, Okinawa, the Last Battle. Or the Marine Corps account, Okinawa, Victory in the Pacific. They are all more in depth and informative than this thin treatise.
Makes history, in all its gritty reality, truly come alive.......2004-04-06
Okinawa 1945 by T. M. Huber is an authoritative and detailed recounting of the last campaign of World War II to take place in the Pacific Theatre. This was a battle so brutal that it convinced President Harry Truman to deploy atomic weapons in Japan as a preferable alternative to the utter bloodbath and the estimated hundreds of thousands of American deaths that a "D-Day" style invasion and conquest would bring. Black-and-white photographs embellish a wealth of details, all of which presented in a smooth narrative style. A superb study that makes history, in all its gritty reality, truly come alive, Okinawa 1945 is a welcome and highly recommended addition to World War II Military History reference collections and reading lists.
Book Description
The intellectual scope and courage to contend with the largest puzzles of human existence and organization distinguish great social thinkers. Barrington Moore's Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy was a foundational work of historical sociology that influenced a generation of social scientists and, decades later, continues to be widely read and taught. Here, Moore takes up the same tools of historical comparison to investigate why groups of people kill and torture each other. His answer is arrestingly simple: people persecute those whom they perceive as polluting due to their "impure" religious, political, or economic ideas.
Moore's search begins with the Old Testament's restrictions on sexual behavior, idolatry, diet, and handling unclean objects. He argues that religious authorities seeking to distinguish the ancient Hebrews from competing groups invented, along with monotheism, the association of impure things with moral failure and the violation of God's will. This allowed people to view those holding competing ideas as contaminated and, more important, contaminating. Moore moves next to the French Wars of Religion, in which Protestants and Catholics massacred each other over the control of purity, and the French Revolution, which perfected terror and secularized purity. He then combs the major Asian religions and finds--to his surprise--that violent efforts to eradicate the "impure" were largely absent before substantial Western influence.
Moore's provocative conclusion is that monotheism--with its monopoly on virtue and failure to provide supernatural scapegoats--is responsible for some of the most virulent forms of intolerance and is a major cause of human nastiness and suffering. Moore does not say that the monotheist tradition was the primary source of Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism, violent Hindu fundamentalism, or ethnic cleansing in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, but he does identify it as an indispensable cause because it justified, encouraged, and spread vindictive persecution throughout the world.
Once again, Moore has drawn on his comprehensive understanding of history and talent for speaking directly to readers to address one of the most crucial questions about human past and future. This book is for anyone who has ever heard the word genocide and asked why.
Customer Reviews:
An Exceptional Text.......2003-08-30
Moore brings a lifetime of penetrating insights into the sociological mindset necessary to create "the moral approval for cruelty" to bear in this amazing work. It is easy to say that his research is shoddy due to the small number of examples he brings into play in the book, but that is simply because he is deliberately taking an approach whereby he leaves out the most obvious and overused examples and focuses on the ones that most people do not know about. He is providing a model and an insight that come from a lifetime of research--he leaves it up to the reader to apply these to the majority of history, and to the world at large.
Christians will almost certainly like this book no more than they would like S. Dennis Ford's Sins of Omission, but it's important to be able to see the darker side of religion. We speak about how we must "never let the Holocaust happen again," but how long did it take European Jews, the very persecuted people of 1940s Europe, to turn around and turn the Palestinian people into their own subhuman subclass? How long did it take American pundits to call for forcible conversion of Islamic nations after 9/11? The lessons of this book should not be so easily dismissed...
Inciteful and Disturbing.......2001-10-19
Although I hope that Moore's assessment of monotheism is flawed, he demonstrates an accute understanding of how group conflict emerges. He carefully shows the importance of the ritualized, pure "self", in opposition to the heathen impure "other." Given the circumstances of the NYC and DC attacks, we must ask ourselves if Moore is right or not.
Engaging and Worthwhile.......2000-08-03
The author does a fine job of convincing us that moral zealotry and persecution, including torture and murder as well as mere reputation smearing, are typically the work of those with a sense of the pure and the impure. The chapter on the deterioration of tolerance in China is especially helpful here. Mao and his moral dogmas were the catalyst. Prior to that, a Confucian tolerance reigned. The chapter on the French Revolution shows convincingly that the purists can be revolutionary, as any walk across campus today can reveal. The author is not interested in the zealots on campus these days, but instead aims his big guns at political tyrannies such as Communism and Fascism.

Book Description
Since "Biologic" first appeared, it has received widespread praise from architects, planners, and environmental consultants, as well as concerned citizens for its balanced, well-reasoned approach to raising our collective environmental consciousness. Its premise is that we must all consider the environmental consequences of our individual and community actions in everything from the simple tasks of our daily lives to the construction techniques of major developments. In addition to thinking logically, we must learn to think biologically.
Customer Reviews:
A balanced, well-reasoned approach to environmental education.......2006-03-18
My first lessons on the environmental consequences of our individual & community actions came from reading R Buckiminster Fuller's Critical Path & attending one of his workshops in USA in the early 90s. Bucky, as he was often known, was acknowledged as Planet Earth's Friendliest Genius. I was quite intrigued by his work & creations.
Among the first few books on environmental education, I somehow got hold of Biologic, the contents of which have been most fascinating for me. Although somewhat technical, I found the writing of the book to be quite light-hearted in some way.
The book is structured in five thematic chapters as follows:
Chapter 1: Biologic
Chapter 2: Knowing - environmental awareness;
Chapter 3: Choosing - individual action;
Chapter 4: Designing - societal & technical experimentation;
Chapter 5: Implementing
In a nutshell, this book is about a new way of thinking.
To use the author's own words: "Using biologic, we must rethink everything from energy use to the way we advertise our products. As the paradigm of our culture, we must replace the unwavering arrow of "forward progress' [an illusion] with the continous loop of recycling (the way nature actually works). To do this, we must make use of every available tool - from free market mechanisms to government intervention. Only by making an unstinting effort at every level of society can we make the change that will allow us to prosper & not just survive."
The author introduces ten Biologic principles, which I would like to recap as follows:
1. Understanding basic physical concepts like gravity, nutrient cycles, & the flow of sun, wind & water - so decisions can be based on what's really here rather than what can be done with the "mirrors" of once-only energy;
2. Using resources on a sustainable basis, taking only the "interest" out of our ecological savings account rather than dipping into the principal;
3. Using the right tool for the right job. We need a diverse toolkit of solutions, & in many cases we'll have to use more than a single tool;
4. Carefully monitoring & streamlining what goes in so that junk will not come out along with the intended product;
5. Developing the habit of tracing the origins & future route of each physical interaction so that something enjoyed in the present doesn't leave a hole in the future, & nothing discharged or thrown away here become a compound problem there;
6. Acknowledging the uniqueness of each location & its suitability for certain uses only;
7. Using the simplest process or product to get the job done so the environment benefits as well as the manufacturer;
8. Using software (information) rather than hardware whenever possible to reduce inevitable collisions between imprecise human design & "custom-fit" natural design;
9. Using design solutions that accomplish three or four things at once;
10. Accounting for costs with the full lifetime of the product in mind;
I must admit some ideas in the book are not new, but the author has very intelligently pulls them together into a useful application framework. Although I have found a few ideas to be quite theoretical, many are still pragmatic.
Personally, I may not be able to apply most of the ideas in the book, but as an individual, I am now certainly more aware & conscious of my accountability as a citizen on Planet Earth.
As a whole, this book provides a balanced, well-reasoned approach to environmental education.
To Protect the Environment, First Understand Nature.......2001-08-02
When I wrote Biologic in the early 90s, it was after I had an epiphany about Human/Nature. We are altering the planet's biosphere radically because we don't design to meet the needs of nature and humans. I did extensive research on the way nature works, which was built upon my own years of hands-on experience in the garden.
I wrote a book that explains new ways of thinking: preventively, holistically, bio-logically, then designing our products, our agriculture, transportation, architecture, and so on WITH NATURE IN MIND.
The book has been an inspiration to creative thinkers like Amory Lovins, Paul Hawken, Hazel Henderson, and many others, and is just as relevant in its accessible, non-academic, core thinking as it was when I wrote it.
College professors have told me their students will read this concept book far more readily than a typical textbook, and that Biologic tends to generate lots of creative discussion.
Have a look-- whether you're a businessperson,an educator, a consumer, or a designer, you'll find food for thought here. As Edward Abbey phrased it, "We must learn to think not only logically, but biologically..."
