Book Description

A survival guide for young adults to turn financial chaos into financial order

Consider these facts. The average college student graduates owing almost $20,000 in student loans. In addition, nearly 10 percent of undergraduates owe more than $7,000 in credit card debt. Young Americans aged 15-25 filed bankruptcy at a record rate in 2000, accounting for nearly 7 percent of the nation's personal bankruptcies. Clearly, young people today need help managing their money better.

Don't Spend Your Raise, by one of America's leading advocates for personal finance education, offers young people in college or just starting out in the real world practical, doable "money rules" to help them handle their money more wisely and dramatically increase their personal wealth. It does not contain lengthy, complicated charts and equations for financial analysis and planning.

Instead, it presents 60 clear, uncomplicated, easy-to-follow dictatessuch as Never have more than two credit cards, never buy a new car, and don't fly first class for the free cocktailswhich, if followed, will guarantee fewer money mistakes and more money successes.

3 out of 5 stars Good general ideas -- no application plan........2004-12-01

I had the opportunity to hear Ms. Duguay speak about this book after I read the book. Granted, she is a very good speaker, but just like in the book, failed to provide tools to address specific financial issues.

All of the ideas Ms. Dugauy advocates are great for a general idea of how to maintain/achieve financial security. However, no plan of attack is suggested. My experience has been that if one is so lost in financial debt or has little financial experience, they need a specific plan or at least be told where to start.

In general, good ideas, but don't count on the book to be an answer to your financial woes unless you are extremely diciplined and creative in setting up your own plan.

1 out of 5 stars Here is one more money saving tip.......2003-09-20

I have been reading lots of these types of books of late so I feel that i have a pretty good sense of what is good and what is not.

Here is tip number 61: dont buy this book, it is so simple and basic that only a 15 year old starting out with his first job could possibly find the content useful. Instead I would purchase "The Wealthy Barber," a useful and timeless classic, and its Canadian content is a plus.

If you are still curious then follow this advice instead, go to the bookstore and spend 10 minutes reviewing the headlines in each chapter. There is not much more depth beyond those words.

Tackling personal finance as a young adult is extremely difficult, especially if you don't know where to start. As a recent college graduate with too much debt, too many credit cards, and too little income, I was looking for a way to get myself on track. I picked up a copy of "Don't Spend Your Raise" and immediately discovered that I couldn't put it down! Ms. Duguay's recommendations have been so helpful to me. Do yourself a favor and spend the twelve bucks on this book. It might save you thousands down the road..

5 out of 5 stars Got Debt?? Read This Book.......2003-02-17

Having struggled with substantial credit card debt and personal problems over the last few years, I turned to Dara Duguay's "Dont Spend Your Raise And 59 Other Money Rules You Can't Afford To Break" for sound advice on budget and financial planning. I found it to be absolutely invaluble. Ms. Duguay not only provides the black letter rules that help with day-to-day and month-to-month spending decisions, but she also pares them with real life stories that bring the rules to life. For example, she advises consumers to set aside money for an emergency fund, and then tells the story of poor Brendy who had to take job at Starbucks after her boyfriend left her just to pay the monthly bills.

Like I said, an invaluable book....for yourself....or for your kids who are just graduating from high school or college.

      Book Description

Liberal theories have long insisted that cultural diversity in democratic societies can be accommodated through classical liberal tools, in particular through individual rights, and they have often rejected the claims of cultural minorities for group rights as illiberal. Group Rights as Human Rights argues that such a rejection is misguided. Based on a thorough analysis of the concept of group rights, it proposes to overcome the dominant dichotomy between "individual" human rights and "collective" group rights by recognizing that group rights also serve individual interests. It also challenges the claim that group rights, so understood, conflict with the liberal principle of neutrality; on the contrary, these rights help realize the neutrality ideal as they counter cultural biases that exist in Western states. Group rights deserve to be classified as human rights because they respond to fundamental, and morally important, human interests. Reading the theories of Will Kymlicka and Charles Taylor as complementary rather than opposed, Group Rights as Human Rights sees group rights as anchored both in the value of cultural belonging for the development of individual autonomy and in each person’s need for a recognition of her identity. This double foundation has important consequences for the scope of group rights: it highlights their potential not only in dealing with national minorities but also with immigrant groups; and it allows to determine how far such rights should also benefit illiberal groups. Participation, not intervention, should here be the guiding principle if group rights are to realize the liberal promise.

                      Book Description

This book provides a theory to overcome the problem of identifying the principles behind the interdependence of different aspects of nature. Climate, vegetation, geology, landforms, soils, hydrology, and other environmental factors are all linked. Many scientists agree that there must be some general principles about the way in which earth surface systems operate, and about the ways the interactions of the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere manifest themselves. Yet there may be inherent limits on our ability to understand and isolate these interactions using traditional reductionist science. The argument of this book is that the simultaneous presence of order and chaos reflects fundamental, common properties of earth surface processes and systems. It shows how and why this is the case, in examples ranging from evolutionary and geological time scales, to micro-scale examinations of process mechanics.

                        Book Description

From the 10th to the mid-17th century, religious organisations played an important part in the social, political and military life in Japan. Known as sohei ('monk warriors') or yamabushi ('mountain warriors'), the warrior monks were anything but peaceful and meditative, and were a formidable enemy, armed with their distinctive, long-bladed naginata. The fortified cathedrals of the Ikko-ikki rivalled Samurai castles, and withstood long sieges. This title follows the daily life, training, motivation and combat experiences of the warrior monks from their first mention in AD 949 through to their suppression by the Shogunate in the years following the Sengoku-jidai period.

                        4 out of 5 stars Sohei.......2007-04-02

As the previous reviewer stated, this book is the only even remotely thorough treatment the sohei have recieved in English. Like most books by Stephen Turnbull, it is well-written and researched, but also tells a captivating and heroic story (read the stories of Gochin no Tajima and Tsutsui Jomyo Meishu on pages 52-53).

3 out of 5 stars thin, one of two books in English.......2005-08-26

Well illustrated, overview, but "not much meat on the bones", I would only recommend you buy it since it is one of the only two books I know of in English on the topic.

If you wish a Very Scholarly treatment read "The Teeth and Claws of the Buddha: Monastic Warriors and Sohei in Japanese History" by Mikael S. Adolphson. Very dense, extensively footnoted. Apparently the very word 'sohei' wasn't coined until the 1600s, and most modern writing is based on that 17th & 18th century perspective (bias) rather than looking back carefully at the actual periods of greatest activity (AD ~900- ~1600). Adolphson talks extensively about the biases of these Japanese historians (and contemporary Japanese historians)

4 out of 5 stars Even the priests of Japan were warriors.......2005-04-06

I had known, in a vague way, about the warrior-monks of Japan, but this is the first book I'd ever seen that concentrated on them. Had things gone just a little differently in a few battles, it could have been them, rather than the samurai, who effectively ruled Japan, with unknowable consequences. Many of these "monks" were as fierce, brave and stark warriors as any samurai; in fact, many samurai joined the warrior-monks' monasteries.

                            Book Description

Quantum mechanics, which describes the behavior of subatomic particles, seems to challenge common sense. Waves behave like particles; particles behave like waves. You can tell where a particle is, but not how fast it is moving--or vice versa. An electron faced with two tiny holes will travel through both at the same time, rather than one or the other. And then there is the enigma of creation ex nihilo, in which small particles appear with their so-called antiparticles, only to disappear the next instant in a tiny puff of energy. Since its inception, physicists and philosophers have struggled to work out the meaning of quantum mechanics. Some, like Niels Bohr, have responded to quantum mechanics' mysteries by replacing notions of position and velocity with probabilities. Others, like Einstein and Penrose, have disagreed and think that the entire puzzle reflects not a fundamental principle of nature but our own ignorance of basic scientific processes.

Sneaking a Look at God's Cards offers the general reader a deep and real understanding of the problems inherent to the interpretation of quantum mechanics, from its inception to the present. The book presents a balanced overview of current debates and explores how the theory of quantum mechanics plays itself out in the real world. Written from the perspective of a leading European physicist, it looks extensively at ideas from both sides of the Atlantic and also considers what philosophers have contributed to the scientific discussion of this field. Sneaking a Look at God's Cards sets out what we know about the endlessly fascinating quantum world, how we came to this understanding, where we disagree, and where we are heading in our quest to comprehend the seemingly incomprehensible.

This is the best book I've seen on quantum mechanics. It's probably too hard to follow without some scientific experience on the part of the reader. But it is the only book I know of (and I'm aware of most) that really covers the conceptual issues of the entire subject in an open-minded non-romantic, non-mystical and realistic way. Very refreshing. A gem.
