Book Description
Hailed as an indispensable resource (Booklist), this guide to business success on foreign ground features the latest facts and figures, including the changes in trade status with China and Vietnam
Free trade is thriving worldwide--which means good business for American businesses. But when Americans recoil at kisses on the cheek from a Brazilian or invite an Egyptian to lunch during the month of Ramadan, they face an undeniable fact: successful trade abroad demands a firm grasp of not only economic, but political and social forces. Thoroughly revised and updated, this guide gives global deal-makers the insights to avoid cultural gaffes and forge strong alliances.
Here are candid snapshots of the USA's top trading partners, including an all-new chapter on Vietnam. Whether their target country is China (including Hong Kong), Germany, or Mexico, readers will get the lowdown on business prospects, including population growth, age breakdown, per capita income, marketing regulations, and overall risk rating. They'll also learn crucial cultural factors, including negotiating style, sanctioned topics of conversation, perceptions of time and punctuality, holidays, and standard work hours. And from business travelers who've been there, they'll get telling notes on dressing and behaving for success, plus notorious faux paus.
Complete with passport and visa requirements, samples of key documents, and helpful websites, DUN & BRADSTREET'S GUIDE TO DOING BUSINESS AROUND THE WORLD holds the keys to international trading with skill and confidence.
Customer Reviews:
Not up to the authors' prior standard.......2002-03-01
When I saw the authors were the authors of "Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands" I immediately bought this book. It was disappointing, because the authors have shown they can write good books.
The biggest problem is with keeping current. (The authors allude to this issue in their preface.) This book was based on 1999 material and published in 2001. There's a lot of material that has very limited shelf-life, such as a list of government officials in Italy. They publish a list of national holidays for each country, listing both date and day of the week. (Where was their editor?) Obviously that information is only good for one particular year.
Treatment is superficial in many aspects. Under "currency" they only state the name of the currency, with no reference to pegging or exchange rate volatility. Under "Intellectual Property Rights" they discuss the treaties the country has signed. You would never learn there is an intellectual property issue in China from reading this book, because China has signed all pertinent treaties.
Their treatment of cultural issues is not structured. They list five cultural tips per country. These tend to focus on manners issues such as being (or not being) on time. I'm more attune to the method that Geert Hofstede uses in his books where he defines a cultural trait, discusses its implications, and then states how strong that cultural trait is in the country. For example, Hofstede introduces "power distance" as a measure of hierarchy and respect for authority. He then discusses implications for the decision making and negotiation processes. Finally, he gives the scores for each country, leaving the reader to draw conclusions. The authors of this book do discuss one cultural trait for all countries, defined as "Time." To them it means attitudes toward promptness. There is no discussion of the inverse relationship between attention to promptness and flexibility in scheduling, which is a hugely important issue in buying or selling.
Finally, and this is a personal issue because I am a purchasing consultant and educator, there is a heavy emphasis on selling in other countries but almost no attention to buying there. They could have given GSP-status for imports into the US, for example.
I recommend spending your money elswhere. Buy "Kiss, Bow" to learn about manners issues. Get "Culturegrams" to get annually updated information on history and geography. If you really want to study a country it will take more depth and more current material than this book carries.
An Incomparable Source of Information and Commentary.......2000-11-16
Here is the best single-source I have come across thus far which provides information about trade opportunities, tariffs, risk factors, negotiating styles, investment climate, protocol, and cultural tips. (I refer to the revised and expanded version.) The authors discuss 40 countries (in alphabetical order, from Argentina to Venezuela), then provide five appendices: Contracts and Websites, Documents Used in International Trade, Abbreviations of International Organizations, Corruption & Bribery Index, and Conversion Factors. I am now convinced that almost every company throughout the world will eventually become involved, directly or indirectly, with e-business. Here is a comprehensive guide which contains invaluable information and hard-headed recommendations based on real-world experience. Other volumes are now available which provide more information about a single county (eg Stuttard's superb The New Silk Road whose subject is China) but none, to my knowledge, which is comparable in terms of global coverage.
Excellent resource for U. S. exporters of all sizes........1998-09-24
This book provides valuable information on the social, political, economic and marketing aspects of the 40 major trading partners (countries) of the United States. It rates the credit worthiness of each country based upon its trade and monetary policies, climate for foreign investment, import duties and taxes, political climate, and attitude towards protection of intellectual property rights. It does an excellent job of addressing the cultural aspects of doing business abroad. Our staff uses it often as a resource for conducting international market research and working with consulting clients. Recommended for purchase by John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute

Book Description
Remarkable recent progress in quantum optics has given rise to extremely precise quantum measurements that are used in the research into the fundamentals of quantum physics, and in different branches of physics such as optical spectroscopy. This progress stimulates new technologies in the field of optical communications, optical computation and information systems.
This state-of-the-art volume presents work from a
Summer School on
Advances in Quantum Optics and Spectroscopy of Solids, held in Ankara, Turkey, in 1995. The various contributions written by leading scientists in the field cover a wide range of subjects in this exciting area of physics, and report new and important results and ideas.
Topics dealt with include the interaction of quantum light with trapped atoms and condensed matter; quantum tomography and phase analysis; and many applications of quantum optics from mesoscopic physics to correlation spectroscopy of non-classical states, which are of major importance in understanding the nature of collective excitations in solids.
Audience: This book will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers whose work involves quantum optics, solid state spectroscopy and its applications.
Book Description
The exchange between physics and metrology is always fascinating and exciting. Many are the open problems in physics that call for extremely precise standards, many are the advances in metrology made possible by a deep and assiduous study of the underlying physics. One has just to think of the enormous sophistication required in the measurements of some absolute quantities such as the Avogadro, the gas, or the gravitational constants. It is also worth noticing that not only the units of a metrological system are interrelated through the fundamental constants, but also the latter find their full significance when they are determined through the most exacting metrological experiments. Over the past decade many improvements took place and these are discussed in this book; from one side the old caesium SI second definition has found a new realisation, with the "fountain" approach, replacing the classical thermal atomic beam. The use of "cold" atom techniques, in which bunches of inert atoms are collected, slowed down, and cooled, has opened a number of new and unexpected avenues for metrology and fundamental constants; one of these possibilities being the atom interferometry. Another important "quantum jump" was the demonstration of the possibility of performing a direct frequency division in the visible, using ultra short femtosecond pulses. In addition, the possibility of "counting" electrons or photons gave a fundamental support to the development of single-electron capacitance standards and to new scenarios in the absolute calibration of photo-detectors

Customer Reviews:
This is young adult?.......2001-01-07
"My Twelve Cents Worth" is really an unusual book, don't get me wrong, I loved it, but it's really not what I would call young adult. It is well written and understandable, but many of the topics could easily go over most pre-teens' heads. I interpreted this book to be just an eccentric view of life from a very strange character. Enough said.

Book Description
NOW IN PAPERBACK! There are few systematic guides to the language used by the generation that fought the American Civil War. In the 150 years since the great conflict, our language has changed, and as meanings have become obscure or lost, links with this vibrant past have dissolved and much of that which had meaning to our forefathers no longer has the same meaning to us.
What did it mean to cross the bar? What did it mean to see the elephant or to go South? Why did the armies have so-called ninety-day men and hundred-day men? What were soldiers supposed to do when their commander shouted, Let her go, Gallagher? How did one pay tribute to Neptune? What was a picket pin? Could one make a passable meal of possum beer and secession bread? How did one vibrate the lines, and why would anyone want to attempt such a maneuver?
To address this need, Webb Garrison has pored over his notes from more than thirty years of research and study to produce this dictionary and encyclopedia of words and phrases (including nicknames and slang) commonly used during the war. Where appropriate, examples and anecdotes are included to illustrate meanings. Often overlooked naval terms and esoteric formal and informal military expressions are addressed as well as short descriptions of oceangoing vessels and river craft.
More than 2,500 entries and 250 illustrations cover the terms, equipment, and organization of the three million soldiers who fought in the war. HISTORY; CIVIL WAR

Civil War Usage.......2006-09-08
I purchased this book to help me understand the terms used during the Civil War for a history project I am working on. The book is easy to read and the terms that I needed where easy to find as well as suggestions for terms that went along with what I was looking for. It will be a great addition to my history part of my home library and the price was reasonable. The book has also spurred my interest in other subjects connected to some of the terms I found in the book. Great book for anyone working on the Civil War.
CW Encyclopedia.......2006-03-22
A helpful guide to words & phrases current in the Civil War. Entries, alphabetically arranged, are brief and concise, sometimes overly so. Military ceremonies are mainly ignored, and in one case not quite correct. Still, very useful to explain those obscure references one finds in diaries and newspaper accounts.
The Encyclopedia of Civil War usage.......2006-02-24
An invaluable tool to help you understand change in word usage--excellent for reinactors, writers and scholars of the Civil War era.
The supreme reference tool for the American Civil War.......2005-05-19
This is undoubtedly one of the greatest reference works about the American Civil War, written by one of the most renowned scholars in this field. The 2,500 entries range from 'A1' and 'abaft' to 'Zouave'. There is a rich collection of slang terms that represent the speech of both sides in the War as well as entries that refer to weapons and machines. There are also many nicknames of generals and high-ranking military officers (for which there are useful biographies provided)and eponymous phrases such as 'Sherman's neckties' and 'Sherman's sentinels' etc. There is also a great deal of information about places, battles, prisoner of war camps etc. This book will be enjoyed both by the historian and the linguist. Here one can find practically every term or phrase associated with this period of history. Admittedly if one scanned carefully in the Civil War section of Paul Dickson's excellent work 'War Slang' or in Robert Hendrickson's books 'Whistlin' Dixie' and 'Yankee Talk' then one may well come across the odd entry not incluuded here. However, this work constitutes the greatest colletion in a single volume.
As a non-American the American Civil War has always both interested me and bewildered me. It seems that popular opinion has often simplified the causes of the war. In the entry on 'Slavery' the authors declare that this was "not the only issue dividing the north from the south". Indeed, there were many other political and economic reasons. It is a fallacy to go on believing that the South was the side of the baddies who wanted slaves while the North were the goodies who wanted to free the slaves. The Americans had fought bravely to secure their own independence. It does not seem illogical why an extremely large section of the states should want to form their own country (that would have been analogous with Canada). If this was their wish they should have been allowed to do so. Perhaps the feeling between North and South would have been a lot different today if the South looked on the North as just a friendly neighbour (in the same way that Canada does) rather than holding a grievance. In the war both sides displayed heroism and both sides committed atrocities. The total cost in terms of human life makes the American Civil War one of the greatest tragedies of world history. As for the pretext about the slaves, this was just a pretext. If this had been such a vital issue then why in the aftermath of the war was there no legislation to make former slaves equal citizens. Even almost a century later the Afro-American (for whom this war was supposedly waged) was still treated as a second class citizen. In the 1950's there was still a system comparable with the South African 'apartheid' with black people not allowed to travel in the same bus compartment as whites. Even those black soldiers drafted in W.W.1. and W.W.2 were kept seperate in their own regiments. In the Vietnam war a disproportionately high percentage of black people were enlisted and were not allowed to use their 'dap' or 'soul handshake' for fear that it might form constitute some exclusive bond. Even today it is in the poor black neighbourhoods (not the luxurious tree-lined avenues where the senators live) that the military frequent to find expendable recruits for Iraq. In the new Iraq occupation some slighly black 'showcase' Afro-Americans like Colin Powell and Condolisa Rice have gained prominence and wealth. However, they do not represent the needs or voice of their race. For the ordinary Afro-American getting killed every day in Iraq or living in a poor underpriveleged ghetto, things are little better today despite the sacrifice of so many lives in the Civil War.
Give'm the bulge! Bully for Garrison!.......2002-09-21
If my above mentioned words didn't offer what this book is about I don't know what will. Cheryl and Webb Garrison have assembled a great book featuring Civil War slang, lingo and material names. Words such as chinch (bed bug), hardware (weapon), leg case (desertion) pop-skull (whiskey) and yaller dog (coward). These are just a small few of the many words in this great book on Civil War era language. This book would be great for reenactors or anyone studying the war and learning more about how people communicated or gobble talked!

Book Description
Logic Synthesis Using Synopsys
®, Second Edition is for anyone who hates reading manuals but would still like to learn logic synthesis as practised in the real world. Synopsys
Design Compiler, the leading synthesis tool in the EDA marketplace, is the primary focus of the book. The contents of this book are specially organized to assist designers accustomed to schematic capture-based design to develop the required expertise to effectively use the Synopsys
Design
Compiler. Over 100 `Classic Scenarios' faced by designers when using the
Design Compiler have been captured, discussed and solutions provided. These scenarios are based on both personal experiences and actual user queries. A general understanding of the problem-solving techniques provided should help the reader debug similar and more complicated problems. In addition, several examples and dc_shell scripts (
Design Compiler scripts) have also been provided.
Logic Synthesis Using Synopsys
®, Second Edition is an updated and revised version of the very successful first edition.
The second edition covers several new and emerging areas, in addition to improvements in the presentation and contents in all chapters from the first edition. With the rapid shrinking of process geometries it is becoming increasingly important that `physical' phenomenon like clusters and wire loads be considered during the synthesis phase. The increasing demand for FPGAs has warranted a greater focus on FPGA synthesis tools and methodology. Finally, behavioral synthesis, the move to designing at a higher level of abstraction than RTL, is fast becoming a reality. These factors have resulted in the inclusion of separate chapters in the second edition to cover Links to Layout, FPGA Synthesis and Behavioral Synthesis, respectively.
Logic Synthesis
Using Synopsys
®, Second Edition has been written with the CAD engineer in mind. A clear understanding of the synthesis tool concepts, its capabilities and the related CAD issues will help the CAD engineer formulate an effective synthesis-based ASIC design methodology. The intent is also to assist design teams to better incorporate and effectively integrate synthesis with their existing in-house design methodology and CAD tools.

Not of much help.......2007-05-16
Not the worst book to have. But certainly there are much better books available like Advanced ASIC Chip Synthesis Using Synopsys by Himanshu Bhatnagar.
Illinois reader.......2004-07-21
Provides some real insights into how to use Synopsys for synthesis efficiently and effectively. Even though the price is high, its worht sitting on your shelf. Although I do love the book, please be advised the book is a little dry in its reading. Some of the descriptions in the text are not explained very well. It seems more like a copy-paste job then a real text. However, a must buy for anyone interested in ASIC.
too expensive...would have bought if Dover published it.........2004-07-07
learn logic synthesis == Himanshu Bhatnagar
Use logic synthesis on real word designs == synopsys reference manuals
develop logic synthesis == fabio somenzi and gary hachtel or srinivas devadas and kurt keutzer
Personally the people who can constrain their design's best are logic designers and people who can delve deeper into the tool are algorithm developers themselves (and those guys dont have so much time!). These half wits will end up killing you...
This is the book I was looking for...sensational!!.......1999-10-12
A must for any engineer making a transition from schematic capture to VHDL or Verilog using synopsys..A MUST have book for the library!!.
It's a book for how to using design compiler.......1999-01-20
In the book, the author explained methods to use synopsys synthesis tool kit in detail.

Book Description
Imagine a single word, which, when spoken and heard has the potential of producing peace. Biokind is such a word. A simple, clear, consise, single treasure. Take it. Speak it. Let the sound of Biokind dwell in, and fill, your heart. It is yours. Biokind is a thoughtful approach to understanding the interactions and importance of all life forms, and that which sustains all life forms (such as air, water, soil, nutrients, sunlight), equally and in a kind manner. Biokind is perceived inactively through the senses (including feelings of the heart), and actively through involvement. Captain W. K. Miller brings us to a new conciousness of our place in the balanced scheme of all living things in her dynamic treatise, Biokind(R), Rhetoric For A New Paradigm...A Field Guide For The Future. Biokind describes a philosophical, ecological and social concept which is the next logical step in the advancement, extension and expansion of environmental ethics.

an important message.......2006-07-15
This book touched me on an intellectual and emotional level. Such a basic principle and yet it contins a meaningful message in an easy to read format.
Biokind.......2003-02-20
Biokind speaks with a passion that should be felt by every human being. It reminds us of where we've come from and our oneness with every living creature in the pyramid of life. As a former science teacher, I taught my students to learn through reading and exploring nature on field trips. Only by using all the senses can the true meaning of life be understood and appreciated. Biokind will awaken a reality deep within your heart and soul. A reality that all life is sacred and deserves the same respect, honor and dignity we wish for ourselves.
Speaks from the heart and soil of the Earth itself.......2002-01-13
Captain W. K. Miller created the concept of "biokind" and draws upon her more than twenty-five years of experience to present the reading public with Biokind: Rhetoric For A New Paradigm. This exceptionally well crafted affirmation that human beings are one with the ecosystem we inhabit, and coins a the word "biokind" reflects how we should best live in harmony with the natural world that sustains us. Faith, kindness, conservation and ecosystem-friendly behavior bring physical and spiritual renewal. Highly recommended reading for students of metaphysics, environmental concerns, and Gaia compatible lifestyles, Biokind speaks from the heart and soil of the Earth itself.
A must read.......2001-11-23
This book is a must read in todays changing times. Especially in the wake of Sept l1/01 and all its leading events. We have come to

a term for the times.......2001-10-31
Biokind is a word that houses a concept that is central to the continuation of life on this planet.Captain Miller has encapsulated the thoughts and visions of naturalists, mystics and people of good will in a short, accessible form. "The wilderness holds answers to questions man has not yet learned to ask." Nancy Newhall, Biokind p45 and Biokind creates a terminology and a context that man needs to recognize the inter-relation of all life. In this time of fear, confusion and violence, Captain Miller's book provides a blueprint to shift our cultural conditioning from one of exclusion to one of inclusion. Study this book and begin to manifest true harmony.
